Belle and Sebastian teve início em Janeiro de 1996, na cidade de Glasgow, UK, quando Stuart Murdoch e Stuart David se encontraram assim, meio sem querer, e começaram a tirar um som juntos. Murdoch escrevia canções sem qualquer pretensão. Porém, precisaria de um trabalho para finalizar o curso na faculdade. Recrutaram uns amigos num café 24 horas, um por um. Estava formado o Belle & Sebastian (nome de dois personagens de uma série de livros infantis franceses): Murdoch, David, Isobel Campbell , Chris Geddes , Stevie Jackson, Mick Cooke (este sendo um dos membros fundadores porém entrou oficialmente apenas no álbum “The Boy with the Arab Strap” (1998) por já possuir outra banda, a Hardbody e contrato com a Sony) e Richard Colburn. A banda gravou um single para o trabalho de Murdoch, principal vocalista da banda. Contentes e até surpreendidos com o bom resultado, resolveram gravar um disco inteiro. Em Abril de 1996, lançaram o debute “Tigermilk”, para poucas pessoas. Mil cópias, todas em vinil, o que torna essa edição uma raridade imperdível. Vendiam o disco em shows e distribuíam aos amigos. Tinham planos de gravar dois discos e se separarem, porém, algo começou a acontecer. A crítica inglesa passou a endeusá-los, mas ninguém conseguia imagens ou entrevistas da banda, o que aumentou ainda mais o culto. Os escoceses receberam inúmeras propostas de gravadoras grandes, mas, com medo de perder a liberdade criativa, assinaram com a pequena Jeepster.
