  • My Hummingbird 100 Female Songs of all-time which I voted for + some more

    Nov 17 2009, 17h55 por BlackCoffeeDuck

This from the HOTTEST FEMALE SONGS!!! Kind-off like Triple J's Hottest 100 of All-time early in the year but only female artists because there was very few women in Triple J's countdown. It's run by a new beer called Hummingbird and some pay TV channel (I don't know which one because I don't watch it). It's a cool idea and I found it so hard to cut it down just to ten in the end so I just made my own 100 tracks from my favourite female artists.

    My Top Ten Votes
    1. Portishead - Glory Box
    2. Kate Bush - TocarCloudbusting
    3. Sarah Blasko - Tocar{Explain}
    4. Nina Simone - TocarSinnerman
    5. Fiona Apple - TocarFast as You Can
    6. Björk - TocarArmy Of Me
    7. Cat Power - Cross Bones Style
    8. Beth Orton - TocarStolen Car
    9. PJ Harvey - TocarThis Is Love
    10. Magic Dirt - Dirty Jeans

This was very, very, very, very hard (have I made it clear how hard this was?) But I picked songs which I could listen to on repeat which I have done in the past (not here on last.fm yet). Most tracks are from the 90's too (I grew-up in that decade, if you haven't all ready guessed). It seems like last.fm's journals are made up of long lists of songs so I've joined in again with my very, very long short list of songs that didn't make it into the top ten. These songs can be any thing that I love really It's from A to Z (well it's Y really, then V). It's selected from the list of tracks which are on their website but I've added a few of my own ones at the end. If you have no idea what I'm talking about go here and read all about it (there's only 4 days left to vote so hop too it).

    The Triffids - Raining Pleasure
The White Stripes - In the Cold, Cold Night
    Vashti Bunyan - TocarRainbow River

So that is it. It wasn't so hard really (but cutting it down to ten was). I've most likely missed something which I'll remember later and be kicking myself about but I'm pretty happy with this mix. It seems my favorite female singer songwriter is Beth Gibbons with my number 1 track in my top ten. Plus two more Portishead songs and one from Beth Gibbons & Rustin Man project album. If you don't know she wrote My Secret for Jane Birkin a few years ago too. That adds up to five tracks out of one hundred which is not many but more that anyone else.

Anyway what do you think??? I liked writing these journal entries but I do like reading you comments and It's also the only way I can tell if anyone has been reading or looking at them. Thanks and bye for now.

  • Back to the 80's, a quick and dirty review!

    Jun 28 2009, 16h18 por Rycochet

Sat 27 Jun – Back To The 80's

    T'Pau

I've never been a particular fan of T'Pau, outside of China in your hand, but Carol Decker has won me over. The energy of her performance was tremendous and her voice hasn't weakened at all with age and she's still pretty cute after all these years. She kicked off the gig with Sex Talk, wearing a fetching red hat (I totally want one) then moved on to Valentine, Heart and soul, then after teasing the audience with the threat of a Black Lace medly, China in your Hand which made the place explode.

    Go West

I won't lie, if it were Go West alone, I still would have gone just to hear 'we close out eyes' live. I wasn't disappointed, they were terrific, Peter Cox has a wonderful voice and sounds as good live as he does in the studio.

They kicked off with 'Don't look down', then performed 'Faithful', 'Call me' and a wonderful live version of Smokey Robinson's 'Tracks of my tears' before a pounding version of 'We close our Eyes' and then finishing with the song that made them big in America, 'The king of wishful thinking' from the soundtrack to Pretty Woman. I loved every minute of their set, even the songs I'm not so keen on (Call me and Tracks of my tears) and 'We close out eyes' live was just amazing.

    Belinda Carlisle

I must confess I missed the start of her set as I was off seeking refreshments, I has expected the people from KC FM to prattle on about the rugby for 10 minutes or so (seriously, who cares?), but what I caught was terrific.

She's barely changed since the 80's, looks and sound the same as always (which is a good thing, of course) and played a set which will have pleased her fans, 'Circle in the sand', 'Heaven is a place on earth' and more, though my inner geek would have loved to have heard at least one track by The Go-Go’s, even if it's not what 99% of the audience wanted to hear, but I'm a geek. ^_^

    Bananarama

What can I say about Sarah and Kerren? They don't have terrific voices, but what they lack in singing ability, they made up for with energy and with the crowd interactions Everyone around me was getting into their performance, singing along, clapping, even trying to join in the dance to 'Venus' (40something males who look like bricklayers doing the hand motions to that song is pretty funny).

They kicked off with Cruel Summer then performed other classics like Robert De Niro's Waiting, a brilliant version of Nathan Jones and more, finally ending with Na Na Hey Hey (Kiss Him Goodbye), which had everyone singing (nananana, Bananarama, hey hey hey, goodbye) waving their arms in the air... Fantastic. Goes to show that you don't always need to have a great set of pipes to get the audience jumping.

    Human League

(Sadly, as the night drew on, it was increasingly difficult to get decent pictures)

It seemed like I had to wait an eternity for the crew to swap sets, instruments and test everything while new wave classics were piped in to fill the gap, early Depeche mode(from the period where they were still geeky and good) and such, but it was well worth the wait.

Phil Oakey looks increasingly like a supervillain, like he should be the arch nemesis of Superman or some other caped do-gooder, but sounds as brilliant as ever. Unexpectedly, the Human League's set included Empire State Human from their first album, which I thought was a real treat, it wasn't a song I'd heard before as I'm not that huge a fan. I like them and all, have quite a few albums, but I've not had much of a chance to check out their early work, but considering it was released years before I was born I think I have an excuse... But that performance has made me seriously want to check it out.

They played brilliant renditions of most of their classics, 'The sound of the crowd', a storming version of 'The Lebanon', among others, and of course 'Don't you want me' which delighted the audience. Unfortunately I had to leave before they finished their set, though by that point my hearing was shot from standing close to the speakers so it was for the best.

I had a fantastic time, all in all, well worth the admittance price, temporary hearing damage(My ears rung until about 12 the following day) and enduring people's fascination with my hair. (I have a lot of it) In hindsight, I should have brushed it all over to one side, like Phil Oakey in his heyday, but that thought only occurred to me afterwards.

  • Mixtape Nostalgia

    Jun 2 2009, 23h48 por RiotGrrrlCS

I found some of my old 90's mixtapes today :) I used to spend entire afternoons recording mixtapes with my favorite songs back when I was 12, 13 and 14. Then I started making mix MiniDisc's and then Mix CD's and now I make iTunes playlists, lol.

I've just had a few hours of nostalgic bliss listening to my old mixtapes, some even made me laugh at their incoherence and/or choice of songs, and I remembered some songs I used to love and had already forgotten, and I remembered the nights spent watching the then amazing and now defunct MTV SuperRock show :)

I found a 1996 Nirvana mixtape, where I only put Nirvana songs. Another 1996 mixtape with Metallica and Nirvana songs. A 1997 Hanson mixtape where I only put Hanson songs (lololol). A 1997 mixtape that only had KoЯn songs except for one Backstreet Boys song somewhere in the middle (wtf? lol). A 1998 mixtape that only had Morphine songs on one side, and VNV Nation songs on the other side (again...wtf? lol) And a bunch of mixtapes that had alot of bands.

So here are some of them:

    1998 Mixtape:

    A Side

    Pearl Jam - TocarLast Kiss
    Rammstein - Du Hast
    Rammstein - Stripped
    Green Day - Brain Stew
Rage Against the Machine - TocarNo Shelter
Foo Fighters - TocarWalking After You
NOFX - We Threw Gasoline on the Fire and Now We Have Stumps for Arms and No Eyebrows
Deftones - TocarBe Quiet and Drive (Far Away)
The Sisters of Mercy - TocarWalk Away
    Pennywise - Greed
    KoЯn - Kick The P.A.

    B Side

    Silverchair & Vitro - Spawn
    Pearl Jam - TocarAlive
    Pearl Jam - TocarJeremy
    Placebo - Nancy Boy
    Placebo - TocarI Know
    Placebo - Bruise Pristine
    Soundgarden - TocarBlack Hole Sun
    Tool - TocarForty Six & 2
    Coal Chamber - TocarLoco
    Sublime - TocarSanteria
    KoЯn - TocarDaddy

    1999 Mixtape:

    A Side

The Cure - TocarJust Like Heaven
The Cure - Friday I'm In Love
    Bush - TocarGreedy Fly
    Hole - TocarMalibu
    Portishead - TocarAll Mine
Incubus - TocarSummer Romance (Anti-Gravity Love Song)
    Skunk Anansie - TocarSecretly
Dead Can Dance - The Ubiquitous Mr. Lovegrove
Marilyn Manson - TocarGreat Big White World
    Spineshank - Stovebolt
    Pinhead Society - Tocarstory game

    B Side

Type O Negative - Love You to Death
    Deftones - TocarMascara
    Lit - TocarMiserable
    Anathema - Make It Right
    Primitive Reason - Hipócrita
    Piston - Grey Flap
System of a Down - TocarSpiders
Ornatos Violeta - Tempo de Nascer
Garbage - TocarYou Look So Fine
    Millencolin - Mr. Clean
    Nine Inch Nails - TocarCloser
Fields of the Nephilim - Moonchild

It was also around 1998 that I discovered Microsoft Publisher and with it discovered my true passion alongside music (Graphic Design) and started making covers for all my Mixtapes, and MixCD's and covers for my MTV SuperRock VHS recordings, lololol (albeit very bad covers, but you can't expect much from a 13 year old + Microsoft Publisher :p)

I don't have most of the mixtape covers anymore, but I found this 1999 mixtape still with the cover:

    with this tracklisting:

    Side A

The Sisters of Mercy - TocarBlack Planet
Joy Division - TocarLove Will Tear Us Apart
The Cure - TocarJust Like Heaven
    The Cure - Burn
    Bauhaus - Third Uncle
    Bauhaus - Passion of Lovers
The Creatures - Don't Go to Sleep Without Me
Echo & The Bunnymen - Killing Moon
    Dead Can Dance - Saltarello

    Side B

    Millennium - One Last Waltz
Meat Beat Manifesto - She's Unreal
    Moonspell - TocarHerr Spiegelmann
    Rammstein - Stripped
    Type O Negative - TocarMy Girlfriend's Girlfriend
    Katatonia - TocarDeadhouse
Tiamat - TocarBrighter Than the Sun
    Anathema - Deep
    Dimmu Borgir - Mourning Palace
    Lacuna Coil - TocarCold

And moving on from the subject of mixtapes but still on the subject of tapes, I also found some really beautiful cassete tapes by portuguese bands from around 1995/1996 that I used to buy from an independent d.i.y. mailorder label & distro. Here are some of them:

I also found my precious The Simpsons - Do the Bartman cassette single :D And I found an original 1993 "Now!" double cassete, lolol:

It has The Clash, Scritti Politti, Kim Appleby, MC Hammer, 2 in a Room, Vanilla Ice, Rick Astley, INXS, Queen, Belinda Carlisle, Seal, The Righteous Brothers, The Source, C+C Music Factory, Nomad Feat. MC Mikee Freedom, EMF, 808 State, Kylie Minogue, Praise, Oleta Adams, Robert Palmer, Bill Medley & Jennifer Warnes, Banderas, Stevie B, Chris Rea, Chris Isaak, The Railway Children, Thunder, etc....

The early and mid-90's...Sir Mix-a-Lot liked big butts, John was the scatman, Jay Supreme was really vain, MC Hammer had to pray to make it through the day (but it were the Ace of Base who saw the Sign), Cypress Hill were insane in the brain, Aerosmith were crazy and cryin', the 4 Non Blondes were screaming "what's going on?" and meanwhile we kids put on our neon wayfarer sunglasses and our slap bracelets; ate popping candy, ring pops and push pops and played with our Game Boy's and Sticky Monsters...those were the days!

  • The Major Music Phases In My Life

    Abr 29 2009, 14h32 por planetShhhh

    I was born in 1978

    Most vivid earliest music memories:

    1) 'Our House' by Madness circa 1982 - I think this was the soundtrack to a UK childrens TV show in the early 80s but this could just be a memory fragment. I get that a lot.
    2) Listening to Radio Ga-Ga by Queen, appropiately enough on my mum's scruffy kitchen radio. According to Wikipedia this was release January 23, 1984

    1985 - 1988

From the age of about 7 - 10 I lstened to nothing other than Now pop compilations, especially Stutter Rap by Morris Minor and the Majors and Belinda Carlisle (still quite hot), The Top Gun soundtrack, whatever music my dad would own including Glenn Miller, The Beatles, other popular 60s music and of course Michael Jackson

Then mainly through school friends and my older brother I discovered the power of rock ...

    1988 - 1991

Being an impressionable and inquisitive boy entering his second decade of life I was dazzled by the good time rock antics of Guns N' Roses, AC/DC, Metallica, Skid Row, Bon Jovi and (cough) Cinderella. I'll definitely never forget seeing the inlay artwork of Appetite for Destruction before I'd even seen a 12 certificate film.

Basically if Bill or Ted or Wayne from Wayne's World would like it then I so would I.

Then something called Grunge came along ...

    to be continued
