  • Eclectic?

    Mai 10 2009, 15h01 por ArdentWays

First, make a list of your top-20 artists overall. Then, for each of these artists, add the 8 most similar artists to your list. Delete any duplicates, count up the number of entries on your list and this will give you some idea of how eclectic your listening habits are. A score of 9 represents an extremely unvaried musical taste while a 160 represents an extremely varied one.

  • "Aging Gracefully (Get The Hell Off My Lawn)" or "I <3 Trance Syndicate "

    Abr 2 2009, 1h41 por senadhi

A few weeks ago someone asked me what the 'new hotness' is this year, music-wise. It's a question I used to love to answer at length, flapping my arms like a fool, cramming burned CDs down peoples' throats. Alas, no more. I stared at her for a few seconds and muttered something about Neko Case. For the next few days I trolled the music blogs, the forums, the pitchforks and the tinymixtapes for New Hotness '09, just so I'd have something more substantial to mutter the next time someone asked me.

Nothing. Nothing but shitty rip-offs, atrocious buzz-bands, and that fucking incomprehensibly overrated Animal Collective album.

And so, I've started to accept the fact that I'm pretty much done with new music. No more finding out about great new bands just starting out, no more being blown away by some unheard of opening act. I like what I like, nothing new is any good. I am officially Murtaugh-ing being in the know about the New Hotness. It's actually quite a relief. Being in the know about the New Hotness is exhausting. You have read the blogs, subscribe to the 'zines, listen to the podcasts, not to mention keep in touch with fellow insufferable music nerds. Then you have to tell the difference between New Hotness, Momentary Warmth That Will Be Lame Before They Even Release A Single, and New Hotness Destined To Sell Out And Do A Car Commercial As Soon As They Release A Single Thereby Becoming Retroactively Lame. Then, you have to keep track of the New Hotness religiously so that you can call them overrated before the inevitable backlash makes them so Old and Busted that calling them overrated is passe. And no, before you ask, I never thought Animal Collective were the New Hotness, I swear.

I'm too old for this shit.

Yes, the new Neko Case is great, as will the new Sonic Youth, and the new Decemberists is surprisingly decent (although I'm still enough of a insufferable music nerd to not be able to listen to it after seeing a Pitchfork writer recommend it on ABC News), but that's not the New Hotness, that's Good Bands Continuing To Release Good Music.

So there. I'm done. Time to be old and not give a shit. It's nice. One of the nicer perks is all the time I have for finding good old stuff. I have been happily indulging my obsession with Trance Syndicate. So, with nothing else to yell about, I guess I'll yell about some of the amazing bands that have called this pillar of American independent music home.

    Cherubs

Cherubs are perhaps a difficult band to love if you are not a noise-rock kinda person. They didn't quite have the kind of chops, or sense of melody, or the smart, bilious sense of humour that made bands like The Jesus Lizard and mclusky so impossible to cram into that particular nook of the musical landscape. What they did have, however, was noise. Fuzzed out, ear-bleeding, buzzsaw-on-sheet-metal noise, and a singer who sounded like he was gargling woodscrews. And drugs. Lots, and lots of drugs.

    Starfish

Oh Starfish. Easily the most overlooked of Trance's roster of bands, there is really no good reason they didn't get huge. They had the chugging guitar lines, enormous choruses, soul-snagging hooks and just the right amount of Nirvana-worship at a time when just the right amount of Nirvana-worship could sell you a million records, hell, their debut was recorded by Bob Mould. Starfish were the real deal, and they died young, forgotten and penniless, like a proper real deal should.

    Monroe Mustang

Monroe Mustang are basically a group of indie rock monks, who live in a log cabin/rectory somewhere in the Texas hillcountry, and appear mysteriously every 10 years or so with a album full of the most somber, crushing, emotionally draining music you're likely to encounter. Then they buy 10 years worth of toilet paper and beef jerky from the gen'ral store and disappear as silently as they appeared.

    Bedhead

Yes, Bedhead. No, I will never shut the fuck up about them. You may be familiar with my views on Bedhead. They were the best band ever, and the miniscule amount of posthumous attention they've been recieving in recent years are barely a half-feint towards their rightful place as one of the most seminal bands in independant rock music. While Slint may get most of the credit/blame for starting the whole post-rock thing, I can't imagine any of the kings of the genre (I'm lookin at you, Explosions in the Sky) existing without the creeping crescendos of the Kadanes, and the absolutely stunning drumming of Trini Martinez. Listen to Bedhead, you jerks.

  • Questions about your top 50.

    Nov 2 2008, 12h16 por Iechium

    1. How did you get into 31 (Cole Milner)?
Through The Watery Graves of Portland. Once I got into them I went to the Marriage Records site and found a bunch of good stuff.

    2. What was the first song you ever heard by 22 (The World On Higher Downs)?
    Most likely Euclid.

    3. What's your favorite lyric by 29 (Built Like Alaska)?
"I put a lot of weight in this, but your head is a cow that's been living it down. Dreaming of the country, dreaming of the open space." From Does Your Mother Feel Sick? on Autumnland.

    4. What is your favourite album by 49 (Candy Bars)?
Well since they only have one album so far I guess that makes it On Cutting Ti-Gers In Half And Understanding Narravation.

    5. How many albums by 13 (Yo La Tengo) do you own?
Electro Pura, I Am Not Afraid Of You And I Will Beat Your Ass, And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside Out, Summer Sun, Painful, I Can Feel the Heart Beating as One, so six.

    6. What is your favorite song by 50 (Arab Strap)? Fucking Little Bastards from Monday at the Hug & Pint, it's such a heart wrenching song and the music is really powerful.

    7. Is there a song by 4 (Hammock) that makes you sad?
HammockTocarI Can Almost See You from Raising Your Voice Trying To Stop An Echo is kind of sad, but really beautiful. They're typically more hopeful sounding than sad, though.

    8. What is your favorite song by 15 (Akron/Family)?
Probably TocarFuture Myth from the split with The Angels of Light, it's just such an epic song and the lyrics are really clever and psychedelic.

    9. What is your favorite song by 5 (The Microphones)?
There's a lot of them, but the first that comes to mind is TocarGreat Ghosts from the Live In Japan CD. Such a haunting (no pun intended) song.

    10. Is there a song by 6 (Swords) that makes you happy? New Shapes from back when they were The Swords Project comes to mind. Actually the whole Entertainment Is Over If You Want It album makes me happy. I wish they hadn't changed their name so many times though, makes scrobbling a bitch.

    11. What is your favorite album by 40 (Magnet)?
On Your Side is good but at times I prefer The Tourniquet

    12. What is your favorite song by 10 (Early Day Miners)?
TocarWheeling from Jefferson At Rest, though there's tons of favorites.

    13. What is a good memory you have involving 33 (The Books)?
The fact that my friend got me into them by telling me that I had gotten him into them through bands that I recommended to him. In terms of discovering music I'd love, he did all the heavy lifting and I got all the credit.

    14. What is your favorite song by 37 (Low)?
Holy God, asking someone's favorite Low song is like asking which child they would sacrifice. I guess if I had to choose one it would be TocarDinosaur Act from Things We Lost in the Fire, mostly because it was the first song I heard by them and to this day I adore it ever bit as much as I did the first time I heard it, if not more.

    15. Is there a song by 19 (Mogwai) that makes you happy?
Mogwai wrote happy songs? I don't know man, that's a tough sell. I guess if I had to choose one that made ME happy it would be TocarCody, TocarAcid Food or TocarTravel Is Dangerous, their songs with vocals tend to relax me and make me happy to an extent I guess.

    16. How many times have you seen 21 (Efterklang) live?
Never, I have no idea how I would. It doesn't even seem like they're from this planet.

    17. What is the first song you ever heard by 23 (Six Organs of Admittance)?
The whole The Sun Awakens album was my first exposure to them.

    18. What is your favorite album by 11 (A Northern Chorus)?
It's hard to gage preference with ANC albums because they're all different from one another. If anything I would say Bitter Hands Resign because it plays more to my tastes. Longer, more spacey songs.

    19. Who is a favorite member of 1 (Epic45)?
Well there's only two members of Epic45 and I don't know either of them personally, so this question is kind of unanswerable.

    20. Have you ever seen 14 (Stars of the Lid) live?
No, but I would love to. I've always been curious as to how SoTL play live. You would think people would need to bring pillows and blankets because by the end of the show everyone would be asleep. I don't really know that ambient music is meant to be seen live.

    21. What is a good memory involving 45 (Belle and Sebastian)?
I remember one day years back listening to Tigermilk while taking apart and cleaning my stove. I don't know why that would necessarily be a good memory, but there ya go.

    22. What is your favorite song by 16 (Hood)?
Hrmm. The Negatives was the first song I ever loved by them. But The Lost You had an amazing video and is a really catchy ALMOST rock song. And I also love the songs that cLOUDDEAD members appeared on, although they were mostly in the backround, like They Removed All Trace That Anything Ever Happened Here and Branches Bare.

    23. What is the first song you ever heard by 47 (Cat Power)?
Definitely Good Woman. Still one of my favorites, though it kind of got overshadowed as I heard the rest of the You Are Free album.

    24. What is your favorite album by 36 (the squarewaves)?
Jeez couldn't you ask about 35 instead? Squarewaves don't really release traditional albums, they release their music online in batches. So I don't really think there's an answer to that.

    25. What is your favorite song by 18 (Bows)?
Definitely impossible to answer. If you twisted my arm I might say Cuban Welterweight Rumbles Hidden Hitmen, though.

    26. What is the first song you ever heard by 38 (The Unicorns)?
It's been a while but probably I Was Born A Unicorn or more likely I Don't Wanna Die.

    27. What is your favorite lyric by 3 (Little Wings)?
Who could choose a favorite Little Wings lyric? Everything Kyle Field writes is amazing,

    28. What is your favorite song by 2 (Do Make Say Think)?
I don't know that it's easy to have a favorite Do Make Say Think song. Their albums kind of flow together perfectly. Though I've listened to TocarAuberge le Mouton Noir more than anything else.

    29. What was the first song you ever heard by 32 (múm)?
Definitely We Have a Map of the Piano from Finally We Are No One. A friend of mine sent it to me years ago and I was like "What in God's name am I listening to?". Now it's my favorite song of theirs.

    30. What is your favorite song by 8 (Sigur Rós)?
Again, that's like asking favorite children. Though I could probably get away with TocarSvefn-g-Englar.

    31. How many times have you seen 17 live (Rachel's)?
Never. I don't get out much. I would love to see them though, live shows with classical string arrangements are always interesting.

    32. Is there a song by 44 (The Blithe Sons) that makes you happy?
The Book of Names doesn't suck.

    33. What is your favorite album by 12 (Earlimart)?
Very easy question to answer. Treble & Tremble, far and above everything else they had done and have done since.

    34. What is the worst song by 34 (Elliott Smith)?
I don't really know that Elliott Smith has a bad song. He's kind of hit and miss, though. Mostly his albums get you into his head space and you don't really think about the individual songs so much as the dude being good.

    35. What was the first song you ever heard by 46 (Jessamine)?
TocarSay What You Can, weird fucking song. But in the best way.

    36. What is your favorite album by 42 (Bedhead)?
I think every Bedhead fan has a special place in their heart for What Fun Life Was. All their stuff was good, but that album just seemed more fresh.

    37. How many times have you seen 39 live (Marconi Union)?
Again with the ambient bands. Never seen them live, and similarly would have to bring blankets and pillows.

    38. What is your favorite album by 9 (Health & Beauty)?
Yet another artist that only releases music online and has no "albums".

    39. What was the first song you ever heard by 28 (Mount Eerie)?
The whole No Flashlight album. I kept thinking, wait, I'm listening to The Microphones right? No, I guess not.

    40. What is your favorite album by 7 (The Watery Graves of Portland)?
Well I heard CARACAS first, and loved it. But I do also enjoy Portland quite a bit.

  • Indie 3.0 - The New Year
