• How Varied Is Your Music Taste?

    Dez 1 2009, 11h37 por CooCooCachooo

First, make a list of your top-20 artists overall. Then, for each of these artists, add the 8 most similar artists to your list. Delete any duplicates, count up the number of entries on your list and this will give you some idea of how eclectic your listening habits are. A score of 9 represents an extremely unvaried musical taste while a 160 represents an extremely varied one.

Otherwise known as "last.fm nerd from hell"

I do a lot of trying new music (new to me, that is).

    Here's how I do it:

1 - any artist I want to try, I tag them (or an album) with
. The reasons for adding them could be endless... on my Amazon recommended list; similar to an artist I already like; reviewed somewhere; liked by a last.fm neighbour; (here's an unusual one) marked as similar on Pandora; on neighbourhood radio; the list goes on.

    2. I spend a lot of time listening to this tag radio while I work (usually with "discovery mode" enabled so I only get each track once). Any time I hear a track I like (or dislike), I make a note. I keep a text file record of all tracks liked and disliked, by artist.

    3. Every couple of weeks, I check through my text file. Any artist with loads of "likes" is promoted to my tag. Any artist with loads of "dislikes", or any that have been on for a while with no "likes" - these have the tryout tag removed... I usually put them in a "dont like" tag to remind me in future in case I forget about them and think of trying them again.

    4. So I also listen to tag radio frequently. It's nice listening to this station because all the music on it is still new to me and I'm thinking, "Ooh this is good" almost every track. But I still keep a new log for each track along the lines of either *really good* or *to be blunt.. what was I thinking?!*

5 Just recently I did my first sweep of and moved the *really good* artists onto my new tag station . This station has only bands/albums which have caught my attention in a good way, multiple times in the last few months.

Here's the music that has passed muster:

Brookville, The Charlatans, Breathe (Leaves), JackInABox (Turin Brakes), Modern Times (Bob Dylan), Aimee Mann, Kelly Sweet, The Devlins, The Invisible Invasion (The Coral), It's Never Been Like That (Phoenix), Don't Kill (Rob), Hello Waveforms (William Orbit), Mute Math, Baron Bane, Tahiti 80, Metric, Baxter and The Clientele.

Have a listen to the tag if you like

Of these, I have to say, The Charlatans are probably my new favourite band.

Take your top 20 artists. For each of these artists, collect the top 5 similar artists. The resulting number of unique artists is your eclectic score. If the score is small (extreme = 5) your musical preferences are very limited, and if it is large (larger than 80, extreme = 100), then you have an eclectic musical preference. • Embrace me, surround me, as the rush comes

    Fev 27 2007, 7h34 por mandee_jayne

My weekly listenings, again, was restricted to my trip hop/electronica playlist, with a couple newer artists that I didn't feel like leaving off just now, and also I got the random urge to add Garbage. I love Garbage immensely, they were my favorite band of all times for many years, only to be surpassed by The Dresden Dolls. But I just haven't listened to them in a long time. It's good to get my Garbage back. Anyway, here's the list.

    1. Flyleaf
Still really like Flyleaf. Especially the pretty ones, they are amazingly beautiful.

    2. Hooverphonic
Aww my favorite trip hop artist, it's been a real treat to revisit Hooverphonic this week. Some of their songs are absolutely heartbreaking and haunting and beyond gorgeous, I just love them. Sad Song, Vinegar and Salt, My Child, especially, are so amazing.

    3. Metric
And Metric's just fun and entertaining, I love Metric, it's so cute and makes me want to get up and dance around. Although they, too, have some beautiful songs. Kind of a requirement for me, I only truly fall in love with a band if they can do the pretty songs well.

    4. Garbage
And there's Garbage, again with the heartbreaking, I forgot how sad and beautiful It's All Over But the Crying is, absolutely wonderful (in a depressing kind of way lol). I've missed you Garbage, I cannot WAIT to hear Shirley's solo stuff, I wish I had any idea when that may be.

    5. iiO
I still adore At the End, which Madeline introduced me to, but I've also found other songs by them that I absolutely love. I love their sound, and her voice, and I've just been really into the dance music thing lately. I really enjoy all the iiO songs I have, they make me happy and dance-y.

    6. Dot Allison
Dot Allison makes amazing, beautiful trip hop, I just love her. I've missed my trip hop, I'm so glad to be revisiting it!

    6. Ian Van Dahl
Another one of my dance/electronica/trance artists I am currently in love with, and they have several songs on DDR, so that's exciting, I get to play to them :)

    6. Client
Ah, Client, Pandora keeps teasing me by playing songs that I don't have of yours and making me want them badly. I wish I could find more songs, I love Client a lot. Excellent dance music, very addictive.

    9. Baxter
Another one of my favorite trip hop artists, I've missed a lot of Baxter too, they have some really amazing songs. They had an album out since their self-titled, and I got that somehow online, I'm not sure it's even available to buy anymore, but I almost like that more than their first, though I love both. Baxter's just really amazing.

    10. Ladytron
And what better way to wrap it all up, but with Ladytron, really the start of my recent electronica-obsession. It's all the fault of Destroy Everything You Touch. It started it all with being such a fucking amazing song and being there for me and Madeline to dance to again and again while we were drunk on Halloween. Well, that started me on Ladytron and Client, which I've liked for quite some time now, it's really all this DDR-playing that's made me obsessed with electronica in general. I've always loved electronic music, I don't know what it is, it just makes me happy, maybe it's the prevalence of female vocals? At any rate, here I am, for a little while longer at least, before I go hunting up more Dresden Dolls-related music.

Speaking of Dolls-related music, I'm very excited for the HUMANWINE concert, I ordered the tickets yesterday and it's very exciting, I can't wait for March 31st :D It's going to be so fun!
  • Hey can I go with you, when the rendezvous's over

    Fev 19 2007, 23h50 por mandee_jayne

So my musical tastes are kind of coming full-circle. It's pretty neat. I have been liking dance music/electronica lately and I put it on a playlist for a party I had on Friday along with some trip hop, which I've found that I've missed terribly and have been listening to that playlist nonstop now. Some of my top 10 aren't related to this but, for the most part, it all came from my recent electronica obsession and rediscovery of trip hop.

    1. Flyleaf
This is unrelated to my phase, but I really like Flyleaf a lot. Pandora played them for me once, and I also saw them pop up again somewhere and decided to download them, and was very happy. Some of the songs are absolutely amazingly beautiful. Some of them are louder rock, but the pretty ones are great. Penholder and So I Thought are so gorgeous.

    2. iiO
Madeline introduced me to TocarAt the End and I fell in love and had to find more. They're quite good, none are as good as that song, but I do enjoy them a lot, very good upbeat dance music.

    3. Ian Van Dahl
More good dance/electronica/trance music. I found them through similar artists here at last.fm but recognize TocarCastles In The Sky, I really like a lot of their songs, good dancing music for the party playlist.

    4. Sugababes
I even made a Ladytron-similar artist radio station on pandora.com and they played this while I was at work with Madeline, she really liked the song so I downloaded more. It's pretty much just dance-y pop, I'm not sure I like it as much, but it was good for it's purpose :)

    5. Ladytron
Of course very much Ladytron was played at the party. In fact, I'm pretty sure it was playing when Madeline and I danced on the table together. Good times. But yes, I love Ladytron, they are climbing up my charts, TocarDestroy Everything You Touch is my most-played overall song, absolutely amazing song. I still love them, even though it's been a while and I should be bored with them by now, but I'm not at all.

    5. E.S. Posthumus
This one was actually tied with Ladytron. This is unrelated, it's not dance music, it's something I found through a music community on LiveJournal. It's a little weird but I quite enjoy it, what words there are usually aren't in English though so that really loses me, I can't keep appreciating a song unless I can sing along to it. I just get bored with it otherwise.

    7. 4 Strings
This was another similar artist I found through last.fm for the party, more electronica/trance. I recognized some of the songs vaguely, it's good dancing music.

    8. Client
I also still can't stop loving Client, I need more of the songs, my Ladytron radio station has been playing some Client songs I don't have.

    9. Portishead
And the first emergence of some of my trip hop stuff. I guess I just had quite a bit of Portishead on my playlist, but it was good because about 20 minutes into the party someone was like "oh is this Portishead? I love them" so yeah, who doesn't like Porishead? They're quite old, but very, very good.

    9. Motorcycle
And tied with Portishead was Motorcycle, who only have *one* song. But it's a great song, and I apparently played it 14 times last week :) As the Rush Comes is a really great trance song, the person that introduced me to Ladytron at my livejournal community also introduced me to this song, but I wasn't really into trance and louder dance music, but now I really like it, I've graduated from only liking pretty electronica to an equal-opportunity electronica lover. Actually, that's not true, I still don't like anything with male vocals, but at least that's rare in electronica music :)

And some honorable mentions of stuff I'm really loving to rediscover:

Metric (barely off the chart at #11)
Oh how I've missed thee Metric...

    Hooverphonic
My favorite trip hop artist, I'm really, really excited to hear them again, they're so wonderful.

Olive, Zero 7, Spook, Halou, Baxter, Dot Allison

Such beautiful stuff...I'm so glad I'm listening to it again, it makes me very happy. It's like reconnecting with an old friend.

So anyway, that's pretty much the point of this post. I love music, and trip hop, and electronica. Music makes me happy. Yay!
  • Great Expectations

    Fev 19 2007, 19h14 por Pan_Totencham

So what? 2006 passed and to me it wasn't fantastic musically. A lot of plastic tunes, frustrating charts, plenty of dumb lyrics. Well, the best albums of previous year are definietly Slappers from Dani Siciliano, (miss)understood and Secret from ayumi hamasaki. There was also one good album, Life In Mono by Emma Bunton - quite nice sounds from 60. Recently I dicovered Amy Winehouse. Her Back To Black is a really good piece of soul music.

But... I'm really looking forward to hearing new stuff of 2007. This year seems to be really great. Here is the list of the records I am waiting for.

    1. Björk.
The best female singer ever! Other ladies are not able to lick her shoes. For now we know about her collaboration with Timbaland. Firstly, I was in a big shock and worried. Luckily, it is now said that Björk went to him, they produced some beats for two songs and then she took them to work on them alone. So now I am totally calm and I'm patiently waiting for Björk's new work.

    2. Marilyn Manson.
My another favourite artist. Shocking rocker but mainly great lyricist and musician. There was no album since 2003 and his last LP The Golden Age Of Grotesque was a little disappointment for fans that loved raw Antichrist Superstar, industrial Mechanical Animals or "psycho-oriented" Holy Wood. It is known that the album title is Eat Me, Drink Me. Sounds familiar? Yes, these words are from Alice In Wonderland. To your information Marilyn is curerently working on his view of the fairytale... He also annouced that the album will be have more guitar sound and there will be no so-called "fillers". He says that it is better to record an album where all songs will be great than where half of an album is good. One day I read about that he's going to release two albums in 2007! It would be heaven!

    3. Kosheen.
This is my 3rd fav artist, the best band ever, and now you see why I'm so excited about 2007 releases :)
Kosheen on their first album showed a lot of club, electronica, d&b and chillout sound mixed with melodies. The 2nd CD - Kokopelli - saw them mixing tunes closer to trip-hop than to club music. It had more rock-oriented tunes and much darker lyrics. The third is called Damage. Markee from the band said that it will be a mix of features form their previous work with something completely unknown. A mixture of rave, electronica and dance. Sounds tasty. The artwork is superb! You can see it on their official site http://www.kosheen.com. The band performed some songs from the album during their tour. The first single, Overkill really kicks ass! It has a rave sound with some quitar riffes. Two things didn't change - fantastic lyrics and beautiful Sian's voice! Get ready, they're coming...

    4. Katarzyna Groniec.
My favourite Polish artist. Probably the best female singer in Poland. Her three albums are simply beautiful. Her fourth comes out on 17th April and is called Przypadki. On a web-chat she said that it will contain 12 songs. To 11 she wrote lyrics. OMG, I adore her lyrics! Also she composed one track and that fraps me... The producer of the album done great work on her last CD. Everybody loving poetry should get to know her.

    5. Siobhan Donaghy.
To leave Sugababes was her best decision IMO. Revolution In Me was maybe not a commercial succes (well, in fact it was a failure) but this is not important - the material was something great. Now, via her MySpace you can watch the brand new video to a fabulous track Don't Give It Up. Siobhan went again on a new direction in music. She sounds completely different but still amazing. Her new songs remain artists like Massive Attack and Kate Bush. But Sio doesn't copy anyone! She's herself. Also we know the title track of the album - Ghosts. It's a really wierd but interesting song. There are also rumors about Siobhan's collaboration with Morcheeba and I think they would sound fine together. Check her out!

    6. Missy Elliott.
She's a bitch! The best woman in hip-hop. What I say? The best goddamn hip-hop artist. Missy doesn't release shit. Her every album is a masterpiece of its kind. I think I don't need to recomend her persona. She is XCLUSIV!

    7. Gala.
Do you remember a dance killer Freed From Desire? It still rocks the clubs all over the world. Gala published her debut album almost ten years ago but it still has its meaning. Just read her lyrics and then think. She's wonderful. Dance music with hear and mind! Now she's back with more funky and hip-hop songs of which she's very proud. I wrote her pm via MySpace if she's going to release the album this year and she replied saying yes. Check out her official site http://www.galasound.com because Gala is definietly worth attention.

    8. Justyna Steczkowska.
The next Polish female singer with a beautiful voice. She has wide and eclectic discography but she annouced that her comming album will be a return to the sound of her debut. Simply great. Her recent work wasn't a commercial succes but this is what she worked for - to be an alternative artist. Anyway, if all she says is true we can put a smile on our face and expect trip-hop influenced by hardrock music. Yummy!

    9. Sophie Ellis-Bextor.
There wasn't much of Sophie last time so it's about time to have something from her again. The first single - Catch You - is... catchy ;) and her sophisticated pop is something that we are all looking for. I've had enough of stupid girls singing "uh, baby"!

    10. M.I.A.
Who can learn you slang thang better than her? :] Arular was a good piece of music and I hope she will hold it on the next album. The song XR2 is known now. It is fam more hypnotic than MIA's other songs. Someday read that she was planning to work with Timbaland which could rock. Now I dunno if she's going to compose with him, but it doesn't matter. I'm sure she will bring hot, spicy album! :>

    11. Erykah Badu.
True soul & hip-hop diva! There’s no other soul singer like her. To his Baduizm and Mama’s Gun amaze me and a few days ago the magic of Word Wide Underground got to me. Probably the title of the release will be Badu Iz Um? – kinda funny ;)

    12. Dezire.
Polish band performing r&b/soul music. Actually I’m dissapointed because of the departure of Maja Studzińska (the last former member) from the band. Maja is a fantastic lyricist, but anyway I’m curious abort what the rest of the group can do. Despite the fact of Maja’s departure, the are five persons in the band and they’ve got hughe talents and it would be a big shame not to hale them in Polish music industry. As well it is known that Maja is preparing solo stuff. I cannot declare if I will listen to Studzińska or band CD but I hope that material will be interesting on both of them.

    ~Rumors.
There are also artists of chich I cannot be sure if they are going to publish something his year. I know that fabulous group Baxter is currently working on their third studio album. Their self-titled debut and sophomore (About This) are brillant. Then we’ve got D’Angelo. I likeded his shit ;) Not only He writes and produces his songs but he’s got good voice. His albums are masterpieces. Also ayumi hamasaki, the best j-pop singer, releases her hits compilation (titled A BEST 2) in two verions! Well, I’ve got almost etery song that appears there (there will be only one premier song) but Ayu sometimes gives to her fans more than one album a year :P Personally I would give her a break :P
And of course, absolute GODESS - Tori Amos. Beautiful, simply beautiful. I just love her music. I love it.
And something to have fun – next album from… Paris Hilton ;) LOL (not to mention the comeback of Cheeky Girls)

So here you are a taster of what's comming out this Lear. As you can see, 2007 paints itself with my favourite colours. Nothing in this world can change it. Even next album from Beyonce, Spears, Kalwi & Remi or Piotr Rubik!
  • Rediscovering Baxter and finding Last.fm

    Dez 9 2006, 0h24 por Madspin

I found the old CD of Baxter whilst rummaging among my PC games and decided to pop it into the CD player to have a listen.

Turns out that I still love the soothing voice of Nina Ramsby and especially in the drum & bass/trip hop enviroment of Baxter's first album. It's just the sort of mellow music that I enjoy listening and relaxing to.

I went Googling to see if I could find more music in which Nina Ramsby have been collaborating and I found a very informative fansite.

I also discovered that Baxter indeed has released a second album called "About This". It's supposedly not as good as their debut album, but there are a couple good tunes in there and one in particular is supposedly up to the old magic, called "My Day". It would be nice to get a hold of the 2 disc special edition, but I guess it's really hard to find.

Anyway as I was Googling for Baxter I came across Last fm and I found this list of similar artists and it was like WOW!, the list had like 70% of artists in this genre that I really like. I suppose the remaining 30% are similar great artists too and I look forward to discovering new cool music with the help of you all.

Hopefully I might be of some use to someone too :p

Well anyways, I decided to sign up and from what I've seen so far I don't think I'll regret it! :)
