I hate the word "gothic". And the main reason is because there are so many meanings that people keep having a go at others for "mis-tagging" and such, even though several completely disparate uses can be correct.

The most recent definition of "gothic" has to do with the Evanescence generation - all those people whose first taste of "gothicness" was Evanescence. I don't think this was completely unfounded - for most of us our first taste of Evanescence was Bring Me To Life, and the song had a few psuedo-gothic elements (as did many of the songs on Fallen) namely a preoccupation with the supernatural (this preoccupation is particularly evident in the song Like You on The Open Door). Furthermore, Amy Lee dressed in black and corsets, blah blah blah, and their performance on Top of the Pops (oh, those were the days xD) was decorated with cobwebbed candelabras and such. Point is, we were told by the record labels and promotional stuff that such combination of things was "gothic". So that's what we grew up believing.

Unfortunately, the "modern gothic" started to be subverted so that bands like Lacuna Coil became thought of as gothic, and now we have the whole Twilight thing to just make matters worse. As a result, we have a whole nation of "mallcore goffics" that, in general, aren't very gothic. The concept has been conflated with "emo" such that an awful lot of people think that being gothic is all about being depressed and cutting your wrists.

They're not all posing; some of them actually do like the stuff they listen to, wear, etc. and don't just do it for the image. However, I have no patience with anyone who seriously uses the spelling "goffic" in sincerity. There is no such word. Please spell it properly if you wish to be taken seriously!]]

But gothic didn't start with Evanescence. As leagues of people on last.fm will probably say the instant anyone uses the term "gothic", there was a "goth" movement in the 70s and 80s. I confess that I know nothing about this. Maybe it didn't reach the UK? All I can do is guess that the 70s/80s "goth" was pretty much the "dark version" of glam rock - Alice Cooper, Marilyn Manson, KISS? I think this is where the make-up and nail varnish element of the "modern gothic" comes from, but other than that I can't really see how the two connect.

[Since writing this journal, Andro and others have educated me on the 70s/80s gothic movement. It seems to revolve around bands like Sisters of Mercy (although Mr Eldritch doesn't seem happy that they're considered gothic xD) and is more or less embodied by Rocky Horror Picture Show, as far as I can tell. I've ended up retaining my original impression, that "the 70s/80s "goth" was pretty much the "dark version" of glam rock", even though the artists I connected with it were totally incorrect guesses xD]

The definition of "gothic" that I use is that of the 18th/19th century gothic literary convention. Gothic novels, more precisely. And yes, the gothic novel can influence music. Some examples of gothic novels are Wuthering Heights, Frankenstein and Northanger Abbey (although the latter is more a parody of the gothic novel). The important aspects of the gothic novel were dark, forbidding settings; the supernatural respresented as an everyday occurance; a morbid fascination with death and the afterlife; a pure, innocent heroine (the beauty) and a cruel, monster of an anti-hero (the beast).

All of these elements can be found in various bands across the world, and it's to these bands that I think you can truly apply the term "gothic". My Dying Bride is the most gothic band, according to my definition, that I listen to, especially the song Catherine Blake, which is synonymous to me with Wuthering Heights. Within Temptation's album Enter is also highly gothic, as are a small number of Nightwish songs (Beauty and the Beast, Devil & the Deep Dark Ocean).

I think all these uses of the term "gothic" are fine, and people should stop attacking others for using the word in a different way than they do. It simply has many meanings, as annoying as that may be. And if you're going to get pedantic, then even Wuthering Heights cannot be called gothic anymore - because there's one definition of "gothic" we've forgotten.

That's right. Northern Europe (modern-day Germany), around 2000 years ago when the Romans were still expanding their empire, several races resisted their advances, and one such race was the Goths. So really, if we're going to be pedantic, shouldn't we say that "gothic" means violent, martial people fond of hacking invading Romans to bits (and presumably drinking a lot of alcohol inbetweentimes)? Because in that case I think "gothic metal" is in fact now "folk metal". Korpiklaani. Turisas. Battlelore.

And if I'm thinking about marauding visigoths, the band that fits this mental image best of all is Finntroll.

That's right. I just reasoned that the most gothic band in the world today is Finntroll.
