  • Albums I've Recently Purchased

    Set 9 2009, 13h34 por Di-chy

    (Left)
    David Guetta
    Taio Cruz
    Speech Debelle

    (Rightt)
    DJ Magic (Grime Mix)
    Bashy
    Tinchy Stryder

Speech Therapy is the debut album by London MC Speech Debelle and yes, I decided to buy this CD after reading the news that it won Britain's biggest popular music prize by beating down all the other rockband nominees. I saw some morons comparing her to Lady Sov just because both of they are British female rappers, but Speech's music is much more chillin' and organic and something that the audience of a wider range of age would love. Now after actually listening to the album, I think she's more like a rapper equivalent of (Corinnie Bailey Rae + Lily Allen)/2. Anyway, this is great.

I've recently found out that Taio Cruz is not just a singer-songwriter but also a talented musician who produces, performes and mixes all his music, and then I started being interested in his own materials. I decided to check out 2008's debut album Departure at first, but also the sophomore effort, which has been led by the latest single "Break Your Heart," seems to come out very soon. (The Japanese edition of Departure contains "I Can Be (Remix) (feat. Estelle)" as the bonus track.

As I've been a fan of British dance music since the acid jazz/jungle era, it's quite interesting to me that a number of grime artists have gone crossover and achieved major success with more pop-oriented dance tracks in the last year or two. Despite the enthusiastic receptions from the audience and critics for years, grime seems to have been an "underground" genre of music with just lukewarm success in the pop field. But now that some of the genre's prominent acts have spawned big hits, it's proved to the whole world that it was not because those MCs were unappealing, talentless or only-for-maniacs but just because the music was a bit too "grimy" for the pop audience.

For the sake of the grime culture, however, it may not necessarily be a good thing to cast aside the basic grime style and get on other styles such as electro-house and dance-pop. In my opinion, their recent crossover efforts should be something for new fans to start with (and for old fans to breathe fresh outside air) and lead them the way to the essence of grime music. Anyway, now that Tinchy has become this successful, all that we can do next soon is just to see how big Dizzee's upcoming album will be.

  • RISE anti-racism festival - clips

    Jul 26 2008, 9h14 por ectomorfo

A few clips shot @ RISE, before Boris Johnson became Mayor of London this year always known as London's *anti-racism* festival.

Ty speaks out against reports that Boris Johnson plans to pull the plug on the RISE festival next year. Previously, Ty explained that he had seriously considered withdrawing from the festival when the Johnson administration removed its anti-racism message - a message never more important at a time when a BNP member has been elected to the GLA - but that he decided to use the stage to speak out against the dumbing-down of the message instead.

Ty performs Oh You Want More.

Ty's set also included cameos by rising UK hip-hop singers Bashy (above) and No.Lay (below). Both grabbed the opportunity with both hands.

I've been impressed by everything I've seen of No.Lay so far - just take a look at this on Westwood TV on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z1W5goDzZ5U.

Other highlights included Terry Hall and Lynval Golding, both ex-Specials, joining the Dub Pistols for a lively version of the Two-Tone classic, Gangsters

and a set by upcoming trad rock n' rollers Kitty, Daisy & Lewis.

All video shot on a Canon Digital IXUS 850 IS compact - stills to follow

  • Music from the UK

    Mai 27 2008, 1h21 por JackKitty

Today I have been listening to a few new albums that I got recently. Thought they were worth a mention!

    Sheila
    Jamie T
    Panic Prevention

Panic Prevention is an Alternative Pop album by Jamie T. The stand out track for me was the tune Sheila. It was the most radio friendly track perhaps, and shows off his Kate Nash style music.

I Need A Fast Car (Ft. Tracy Chapman)
    Example

I Need A Fast Car is a stand out track from We Didn't Invent The Remix Bootleg by Example. The mix tape is solid, feature many recognizable tunes and fun stories by E. Definitely worth looking for!

    TocarLondon Underground
    Bashy

London Underground by Bashy from The Chupa Chups Mixtape is the stand out track. The entire mix tape is fire, but this track is a BIG TUNE! FInd this one NOW...

  • My very own Busdriver journal

    Fev 7 2008, 6h59 por Toxxi

    Here's a concept!
    Busdriver is like grime, done by americans! No really hear me out here;

    -Novelty diahrrea speed rapping.
    -Unimaginative, derivative lyrical themes.
    -Whacky, sometimes embaressing, vocal tones.
    -Straight forward, aesthetically appealing production.
-Enjoyed by people who don't really like rap.
    -Avoided by people who do.

Breakthru! Busdriver is the first black astronaut to do GRIME OUTSIDE THE UK!

  • The Libacheck 1,2 Entry Number 1

    Nov 22 2007, 19h36 por DJ_Libaman

    Welcome!

Yes, I've decided to make a little review sort of journal for all you stalkers out there ;)
Anyways, my week in music terms hasn't been so good, due to exams, extra football training etc. Surprisingly, I've been listening to more electro than hip-hop this week :O

    My Big-Up Tracks:

    1. Theme From Vicarious Bliss (Single Version)

    2. Chop Suey

    3. TocarHoney

    4. Lost In Love (Feat. Polow Da Don)

    5.The Truth (Feat. E-A-Ski)

    The Favourite Albums/EPs

    1. The Last 2 Walk

    2. Getback

    3. With Lasers

    4. Cross

    5. Black Boys-EP

    --------------------------------------------------------

Well it seems Mr West has been kicked off my favourites
by Bashy, who's song 'Black Boys' has
been banned by radio stations amazingly. It's crazy, the one time a black artist tells other black people to
stop acting like idiots and getting into trouble, it
    gets banned.

I've had this track for a couple of weeks now, and it
    gets more addictive every time!

    BADU IS BACK!!

After like 6-7 years, Erykah Badu is back with her new track 'Honey'. It's produced by 9th
Wonder, the ex-Little Brother member. This track is so
jazzy and sweet like honey. I love it! Watch out for the
Kaba which is coming out in 2008.

    Much Love, DJ Libaman. [x]
