Baroness is a sludge metal band from Savannah, Georgia, whose members grew up together in Lexington, Virginia.
Baroness formed in mid-2003, founded by former members of the punk/metal band Johnny Welfare and the Paychecks. Baroness has remained silent about the origins of their name.Singer John Baizley creates the artwork for all Baroness albums, and has done artwork for other bands and labels such as Darkest Hour, The Red Chord, Vitamin X, Sounds of the Underground tour, Kylesa, Daughters, Torche, Pig Destroyer, and the Magrudergrind/Shitstorm split grindcore CD on Robotic Empire. Their 2007 album entitled Red Album was named Album of the Year by heavy metal magazine Revolver. On December 1, 2007, Baroness performed at New York City’s Bowery Ballroom, and the concert was filmed in its entirety and can be viewed on their WoozyFly page. On September 20, 2008, the band announced via MySpace Brian Blickle would be parting ways, while also introducing a new guitarist named Peter Adams. On May 18, 2009 Baroness entered The Track Studio in Plano, TX to record their second full length album produced by John Congleton (The Roots, Explosions in the Sky, Black Mountain, The Polyphonic Spree). It was released via Relapse Records on October 13th, 2009.

These guys need to do a live album. They are so much better in that setting, not that the albums are bad.

So once you enter the world of Baroness, you'll stay amazed for quite a while, and not listen to much else than baroness at all. After some time, you'll stop being over-amazed and at least start to listen to other acts once in a while, but you'll find it horribly hard to get used to the fact that not all music is as good as Baroness is. I still didn't get used to that fact.

I met John Baizley tonight, and he has to be one of the coolest, most genuine musicians ever. So amazed by him. Can't wait to hear a recording of some of his individual stuff, such intricate acoustic work!
