  • Review: Brilliant - Kiss The Lips of Life (album)

    Nov 22 2009, 0h53 por sayheyheyhey

Review - Album: Kiss The Lips Of Life - Brilliant

This album is actually twenty-three years old, so why review it now? It has recently been issued on CD for the first time in the U.S. only and is now being imported by music lovers in the UK after a heads up from the official PWL website about the reissue.

So, who are Brilliant and why should we care?

The album has vocals from June Montana, guitar and keyboards come courtesy of Jimi Cauty who later went on to vast success with The KLF and backing vocalists include Princess, Pepsi, Shirley Lewis and Dee Lewis.

The production on all but one track is from the magical Stock Aitken Waterman team.

It's A Man's Man's Man's World Yes, this is a cover of the James Brown song. It's urban-lite on a pretty sorry scale. Dull, plodding and pretty pointless. 4/10

Somebody This is one of those tracks where - once you hear it - you'll realise that the song you never heard of is a song that you do actually know... if you're a Stock Aitken Waterman fan. This has the key elements that drove the team to become the phenomenal success that they were. A really hook laden and upbeat chorus - top drawer. 10/10

Ruby Fruit Jungle This sounds like one of those very early Bananarama tracks that nobody actually knows... before they became famous, as it were. It's inoffensive, mildly pleasant, but won't make you're waters run with excitement. 6/10

How High The Sun This track really does mark the birth of future legends. All whooshing and rocking guitars with a driving dance beat - hear this, know that the man behind MuMu Land and Transcentral is involved and it all makes sense. Look, too, at the writing credits and see that Stock Aitken Waterman not only produced this but co-wrote it, and you have a vital part of British pop and dance music history to consider. And it's a great, strong track too. 9.5/10

Kiss The Lips Of Life Title track of the album, sounding every bit the mid-eighties track that it is. It's a good fun, upbeat track and one which allows Cauty to show off on the guitar a little. 9/10

Love Is War This track was my biggest joy about buying this reissued album. This is one of those quintessential Stock Aitken Waterman early tracks and was the true fore-runner to all that came after. Hear this once and, if you don't know it already, you'll play it on repeat already and know it by bedtime. A must have track. Ten out of ten just doesn't ate it highly enough. Pure Pwl gold. 10/10

Crash The Car Slightly cheesy but interesting and enjoyable borderline Hi-NRG track which foreshadows Roadblock far more than it does anything KLF. It's almost entirely instrumental... and it doesn't half make you want to sing a Rick Astley song over the top of the beats. 9/10

I'll Be Your Lover This is completely recognisable as Stock Aitken Waterman from the word go. Nice track. 9/10

The End Of The World This is a cover of the old Skeeter Davis song that Stock Aitken Waterman would, a few years later, preside over with a further cover from Sonia. While Skeeter and Sonia delivered quite contrasting version, this one is reasonably uptempo and is a refreshing take on an old song. 9.5/10

    Overall rating: 8.5/10

  • Top 35 albums (with some very limited commentary as well)

    Out 10 2009, 21h31 por david5970

Thought I'd post this chart with some added commentary from me to make it a little bit more interesting than the usual long laundry list that usually gets posted on these journals from time to time.

Kind of interesting to note that there are a number of artists in my top 25 list, that aren't featured here at all, those being Johnny Cash; Beyoncé; Girls Aloud; Alan Jackson; Dixie Chicks (those actually being in my top ten overall); Mariah Carey; Kylie Minogue; Rihanna; Vince Gill; Clint Black; Gwen Stefani; Christina Aguilera; Destiny's Child; and Avril Lavigne.

(14 in all, or over half of my top 25 not represented in my top 35 albums)

I also guess some of the Greatest Hits albums may have skewed the results as well. Still, here is the list:

    david5970's top albums (overall)
    1. Garth Brooks - The Hits (28) For all the essential Garth Brooks songs2. Dusty Springfield - Classics & Collectibles (1) (24)
Dusty was just fantastic when you look at some of the songs on this album: TocarI Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself, TocarI Only Want To Be With You, TocarThe Look Of Love. The whole thing is just pure class of the highest order. 3. Alanis Morissette - Jagged Little Pill (22)
One of the greatest albums of the nineties, I actually rediscovered it a little while ago. Of course, I love all the hit songs from it, but had forgotten just how great the rest of the album was as well. 4. Nat King Cole - The Ultimate Collection (21)
Just some effortless singing at the piano. TocarSmile currently my most played from this album is just an example. 5. Elvis Presley - Elvis: 30 #1 Hits (20)
Elvis: do you really want me to say anything more? Do I need to say anything more? :) 6. Trisha Yearwood - Songbook: A Collection of Hits (20)
Great singer; nice collection of good songs 7. ABBA - Gold: Greatest Hits (19)
Just essential for those moments that only ABBA seem to do, fantastic unadulterated pop that just makes you smile and dance. What can be better than that? 8. The Mavericks - Trampoline (18)
Good fun album - always had a soft spot for TocarDolores 9. Texas - The Greatest Hits (18)
Got a lot of plays from my library radio with TocarSummer Son with 12 plays, although it may not be my favorite song of theirs. Go figure! LOL 10. Madness - Divine Madness (17)
TocarLovestruck is an underrated gem. 11. The Corrs - The Best of the Corrs (17)
Have always loved the Corrs, just loved how they were seemingly fresh and different than anything else around at the turn of the millenium.12. Bananarama - The Greatest Hits Collection (17)
Unadulterated pop again, this time from the SAW stable. Hey, I grew up with this stuff in the late 80s as a tweenager. 13. Garbage - Garbage (16)
Never really appreciated them that much until years later when I just put this CD on and realised what I might have missed. 14. Liz Phair - Exile in Guyville (16)
The more I listen, the more I like. Discovered her by reading an article in some magazine in the mid-90s and deciding just to take a chance on hearing some of her stuff. Kind of a diversion from my usual listening habits at the time but happy that I did. TocarFuck and Run is amazing.15. The Mavericks - Music for All Occasions (16)
Another Mavericks album, boy, they were good :) 16. Black Eyed Peas - Monkey Business (16)
TocarDon't Phunk With My Heart and TocarDon't Lie just remind me of driving through Atlanta listening to Star 94 in 2005. 17. Mary Chapin Carpenter - Come On Come On (16)
The Hard Way, He Thinks He'll Keep Her, Passionate Kisses, I Take My Chances; just love them one and all! 18. Dean Martin - The Very Best of Dean Martin (16)
Come on, it's Dino. You can't get much cooler than that. 19. Manfred Mann - The Best Of Manfred Mann (16)
Great sixties pop music. Pretty Flamingo. 20. Deana Carter - Did I Shave My Legs For This? (16)
Strawberry Wine and the title track. 21. Matt Monro - The Very Best of Matt Monro (16)
Perfect combination of a good singer and good songs. 22. Kelis - Kelis Was Here (15)
Actually surprised that this album is in here, as Tasty is my favorite album of hers. Still TocarLil Star is a good track 23. P!nk - Try This (15)
P!nk is one of my favorite artists, although this isn't necessarily my favorite album of hers (that's I'm Not Dead) 24. Roy Orbison - The Very Best of Roy Orbison (14)
The Big O - nothing more needs to be said. One of the best and most distinctive voices in the history of pop music. 25. Mindy McCready - If I Don't Stay the Night (14)
Have always liked Mindy ever since she first burst onto the scene. Just makes me wonder how successful she may have been now if she hadn't had all those problems that have dogged her. Still, there are some great and often sadly now forgotten songs in her back catalogue. 26. S Club 7 - Sunshine (14)
Don't Stop Movin' to the S Club beat. Good unadulterated 2000s pop. 27. Harry Connick, Jr. - Forever For Now (14)
Recipe For Love and You Didn't Know Me When are two of my favorite songs of his. 28. Pam Tillis - All of This Love (14)
TocarDeep Down and TocarBetty's Got a Bass Boat have seven plays each. 29. Sugababes - Taller in More Ways (13)
Push The Button and Ugly are two great songs. They made some of the best pop music in the 2000s.30. Paramore - RIOT! (13)
To be honest, just getting into Paramore; loving this album. 31. Restless Heart - Greatest Hits (13)
This is in the list just because I absolutely adore TocarWhen She Cries 32. Aaron Tippin - Ultimate Aaron Tippin (13)
There Ain't Nothin' Wrong With The Radio has got the most plays in my library, although TocarTen Pound Hammer is perhaps my fave song, just good fun. 33. All Saints - All Saints (13)
Absolutely LOVE All Saints. favorite track off their debut album was/is Bootie Call . Saw them perform at a wind and rainsoaked Radio One Roadshow in Blackpool. Wish they were still recording together, it's so damn annoying thinking that they have deprived us of more All Saints material (for evidence just check out Appleton. Absolutely adored Melanie Blatt. Those lips.... :)~~~~~ LOL 34. Gretchen Peters - The Secret of Life (13)
Isn't TocarOn A Bus To St. Cloud one of the greatest songs ever written? Actually prefer this version to Trisha's as well.35. Danity Kane - Welcome to the Dollhouse (13)
More of a discovery on last.fm than anything else... was just recommended to me on this site.

  • Musique a 2009 - the low-down so far...

    Out 8 2009, 11h53 por tomstar86

    Howdy!

Well I haven't created a journal since I left for South Korea, so I thought I'd journal my musical exploits of the year to date!

Favourite song of the year so far is, by far, Alphabeat's The Spell. It's insatiably happy and makes me smile and want to break into a dance routine whenever I hear it. I sincerely hope the album has more of the same to come!

Album-wise, royksopp have impressed me, as have Florence + The Machine, Little Boots, VV Brown and La Roux, which I'm surprised at as I still despise TocarIn For The Kill.

Basement Jaxx still needs a few more listens but for me, it sounds like their best work in yonks. And yonks and yonks. Miike Snow - only listened to a few tracks yet so more to come there.

Two I'm really impressed with are Beverley Knight's 100% and Dan Black's UN. Both will be getting some serious repeat spins soon.

I have Bananarama's new album Viva lined up to listen to, and I need to re-visit Jenny Wilson's Hardships! which I discovered through Spotify and downloaded based on its strength.

Emmon's track Secrets and lies is still one that catches my ear.

Passion Pit and Grafton Primary need another spin.

Cheryl Cole has released a song that I actually love, in the form of Fight For This Love. I'm actually pretty surprised, as Cheryl is the member of Girls Aloud that I rate the least musically. In album terms, I'd look forward to releases from Nicola, Kimberley, Nadine, Sarah and Cheryl in that order. Nicola better do a solo album with Xenomania. It would be divine.

Madonna has ceased annoying me with the release of Celebration, which has to be the gayest thing I've heard from her since TocarHung Up. That's a good thing. It sounds so camp disco at 2am, it's techno-poptastic bliss.

Shakira's TocarShe Wolf is one that may be on the quite-bad-yet-that-makes-it-good level. I certainly don't skip it. Jordin Sparks' TocarBattlefield is a decent one too, and whilst on the subject of reality stars, I was pleasantly surprised when I heard the Alexandra Burke preview.

What's to come in 2009? Honestly, I don't have a clue - I'm out of the loop here in Korea. I know The Saturdays have an album to drop, as do Sugababes with their new line up. I hope they don't go too PCD on us, as the video and Get Sexy, whilst good, aren't what I expect from the 'Babes - almost tacky.

Bat for Lashes impressed me with their sophomore offering. TocarPearl's Dream really stuck in my head.

Here in Korea, the music scene is beyond fickle. That hasn't stopped me loving certain tracks, including Fire by 2NE1 and Lollipop by heart-throbs Big Bang (I melt at member Seung Ri...beyond cute! :P ) But...it can be lacking. Although Madmoiselle are interesting...Youtube the video for Superconduction Nightclub.

Was Lady GaGa a 2009 debut, UK people? I honestly can't remember.

Oh and I hope my dear Róisín Murphy drops a new album before the next decade...pretty please?

If you have any new music or recs, drop them below pretty please!
