  • 50000th Track

    Nov 2 2009, 2h27 por goldeneye2131

    Finally.

TocarAlways which was played (approximately) a whopping 103 times during this span...during which I taught myself to play it on the drums...actually quite fun.

    178 days since 45000, which is about 28.09 tracks/day.

Looking back in earlier posts, it seems as though I've thought that my (top artist/track) charts would not change as drastically as they have [oddly enough, I predict that Always will be a solid #2 for a long while]...so here's a snapshot for future reference. (This information will be dealt with by future Ryan)

    Artists:

    John Williams - 4467
    blink-182 - 3141
    Goldfinger - 2942
    Rush - 2599
    The Beatles - 2107
    Boston - 1635
    Eagles - 1613
    The Corrs - 1481
    Mêlée - 1394
    Badfinger - 1311
    Little River Band - 1007

  • remake of Nov 2006 survey [updated]

    Abr 25 2009, 14h55 por goldeneye2131

Since this time, the top ten has changed quite a bit, so I thought that I would revisit. I since have rid of LSO (and Koji Kondo and Disney) and transformed it to the respective composers (ULTIMATEFIX)

    Here is the old post.

Name your top 10 most played artists on Last.fm:

    1. John Williams
    2. Rush
    3. Goldfinger
    4. blink-182
    5. The Beatles
    6. Eagles
    7. Boston
    8. Badfinger
    9. Little River Band
    10.Mêlée

Now answer the questions according to the numbers:

-What was the first song you ever heard by 6?
    TocarHotel California

-What is your favorite album by 2?
    Moving Pictures

-What are your favorite lyrics by 5?
"Step on the gas and wipe that tear away, one sweet dream came true today"

-How many times have you seen 4 live?
    None...hopefully will soon

-What is your favorite song by 7?
    Hitch A Ride

-What is a good memory you have considering the music of 10?
Just the fact that it reminds me of my years as a house fellow.

-Is there a song of 3 that makes you sad?
    TocarThe Innocent?

-What are your favorite lyrics by 2?
"Forget about your silly whim, it doesn't fit the plan!"

-What is your favorite song by 9?
    TocarLady

-How did you get into 3?
A classmate of mine got me started on them, although I don't even think he knows that he's the reason I'm into them.

-What was the first song you heard by 1?
    Imperial March

-What is your favorite song by 4?
    Another Girl Another Planet

-How many times have you seen 9 live?
None...and probably never until they learn to get along

-What is a good memory you have concerning 2?
Probably discussing the music with my brother.

-Is there a song of 8 that makes you sad?
    Name of the Game

-What is your favorite album by 5?
    Abbey Road

-What are your favourite lyrics by 3?
    probably something from TocarSuperman

-What is your favourite song by 1?
    Fawkes the Phoenix

-What is your favourite song by 10?
    Imitation

-How many times have you seen 8 live?
    None

-What is your favourite album by 1?
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

-What is a great memory you have considering 9?
    None

Also a special note. When starting this post, Rush was #2 and Goldfinger #3, however, after actually posting this, Goldfinger has moved into the #2 spot, a position that Rush has held since at least 2006.

Favorites of 1970 - Day 7: Honoring the great year of 1970 with a week's worth of selections (almost all) from that year!

This final selection of the week - you may have noticed that I have posted these in order of their original appearance on the calendar - is the second visitation of John Lennon's solo works in as many months. I didn't plan it that way, but that's alright. Like the previous selection, Lennon contributes two songs to my Top 10 of 1970, along with Black Sabbath.

As I said in my first review of Lennon's works, this first proper solo album - released within the same year that The Beatles broke up - is the one that I like the best out of all his solo works, perhaps because it is so raw, both in terms of production stripped down to essentials and in lyrical content. I also listed my personal top 5 tracks from the album in that post. It's really difficult to pick a single favorite between my two favorites, which are both in the Top 10: it comes down to today's selection and TocarWorking Class Hero.

The latter is probably the deepest, darkest, blackest song Lennon ever wrote: a scathing indictment of every institution and class society, and is especially spiteful of everyone that attempts to "play the game" in order to get through life. It's basically a renouncement of following blindly and an implicit call to wake up and live an examined life, looking at all that is offered objectively, rather than blindly. Especially pointed since he drops the f-bomb more than once, which was more shocking at the time than it is now, but especially coming from someone everyone pretty much still viewed as one of The Beatles at that point. A true classic.

But in spite of the sense of loss and despair that threads through this album, today's selection - which I think I can say is my favorite from the album - is a track that manages to find a lone, shining bright spot in his life. This spartan little song, with John's earnest vocals accompanied largely only by Billy Preston's piano, is the track that provides a small shred of hopefulness:

"I just believe in me /
    Yoko and me /
    And that's reality"

It's the only thing that he has left after a litany of total rejections of gods, of music business fakery, of political leaders - basically, of anything that people assign beliefs to.

Including one which addresses very clearly the last hopes that maybe The Beatles would return after some solo breaks: an emphatic statement - punctuated with a dramatic pause - that he no longer believed in the dream that was The Beatles. This is the break with the past. Get a grip. It's. Over.

I don't think he's mean about it. He tries to let the last hopeful fans down gently, singing almost wistfully:

    "The dream is over /
    What can I say?
    The dream is over
    Yesterday /
    I was the dreamweaver /
    But now I'm reborn.
    I was the walrus /
    But now I'm John.
    And so dear friends /
You just have to carry on /
    The dream is over."

And effectively, not just the end of The Beatles, but the end of The Dream: the great hope and spirit of their times. At the time, a lot of people were quite despondent over the end of the free spirit and the illusions that the world could "be changed." But John here is saying, "From here on out, you're on your own. I and the others are going in our own new directions, and everyone needs to let go and move on. The 1970s are going to be very different from the 1960s, so don't come looking to us for answers because I've spent the 60s looking myself and haven't found them. They're not there, and I don't have them. I won't be someone to look to for inspiration or leadership because I've got my own life and problems that I'm going to deal with in the 70s. Just me and Yoko. Sorry, dear friends, but best of luck."

All in all, it sets the tone perfectly for the attitude which took hold of everyone and came to define the "Me Decade." And that's what all of us born in 1970 arrived just in time to see!

    ------------------------------

So that's the wrap on 1970! If you go back to the original post, you'll see that The Beatles contribute one favorite song of 1970, John Lennon contributes two, George Harrison contributes one (another of the Top 10), and Paul McCartney contributes one of his own, as well as penning another of my favorites of 1970, which was performed by Badfinger.

In fact, looking at Ringo's activity that year as well, I see that I overlooked Beaucoups Of Blues from the album of the same name (that's because I only have it from Photograph: The Very Best of Ringo Starr, so it doesn't show up in my library as published in 1970). I'd probably like even more from the album and maybe something from Sentimental Journey, too, except that I've never heard either of them. (Props to "poor Ringo" for being the first Beatle to get out two solo albums, and both of them in the same year the band broke up! Plus he was able to play drums for John's album!)

The point is: as far as I'm concerned, The Beatles weren't only the biggest band ever, and not only did they own the 60s, but they owned 1970, too! They went out rather strong, despite the sorry state their inter-personal and business affairs were in, and all launched their solo careers quite well, which is a stunning achievement considering the state they were in.

And yet, none of them released my favorite album of 1970, which is...

  • sablespecter's Favorite Songs of 1970

    Set 6 2008, 19h32 por sablespecter

On this, my 38th birthday (birthday wishes to Roger Waters here), I thought it would be fun to revisit that great year of 1970 that brought us not only a whole bunch of great people :D but more importantly for the SotD Journal, so much great music!

Credit where it's due: This list of my favorite songs of 1970 was originally sparked by a timely entry earlier this week from the same guy that posted up that idea of using album market statistics and awards to compute a list of Top 20 Albums (a favorite of Grant's!) No worries, Grant, that one is totally subjective!

Below is my own submission to his call for our own favorite songs of 1970, slightly edited and with some additional commentary.

But I don't want to stop there¹! One day for 1970 isn't enough, so I thought it would be good to have a full week celebration of 1970: starting tomorrow and for each of the next 7 days, I will choose seven² of my Top 10 of 1970 as a SotD, and then cap it off with the first of what I have been talking about publishing for, well, a looong time: sablespecter's Album of the Year awards. If you've been a careful, longtime reader of SotD, I think I've actually said what my Album of the Year for 1970 is, and it shouldn't be hard to guess once you've reviewed the list below and consider my favorite artists. But I'll post it officially, and the rest of the AotY awards will follow.

    ------------------------------
Ah, 1970! A lot of spectacular things entered the world that year. (I did, too!)

The "Best of 1970" and my personal favorites may not be (and likely aren't) the same thing. This list is the best of 1970 in my own opinion. A couple of notes:

    • This takes into account global release dates. Not everything was released everywhere at the same time. Readers of SotD know that I have always used the date that an album was first released anywhere as the date of reference.

    • Be flexible with release dates, especially since we're considering songs as opposed to albums. Led Zeppelin provides a prime example: yes, Led Zeppelin II was released in October 1969, and "Whole Lotta Love" was released as a single twice that fall (uncut in October, edited in November), but it was one of the biggest singles of 1970. It didn't enter the U.S. charts until December and actually spent more weeks on the chart in 1970 than in 1969. And if you think globally, it was one of the biggest singles around the world in 1970, hitting #1 in at least three countries in that year.

    • I have listed alternate arrangements/covers separately.

    • I have generally tried to select no more than one song from an album, though in a few instances I just can't!

Favorites of 1970 (alphabetically, *denotes Top 10 selection):
    • The Allman Brothers Band: TocarIn Memory Of Elizabeth Reed
    • Badfinger: TocarCome and Get It (technically released before the album as a B-side to Rock of All Ages in Dec 1969...but be flexible)
    • The Beatles: Let It Be
[Can I also include Don't Let Me Down? Damn Phil Spector for cutting it from Let It Be! (Although I do like what he did with the title track, which IMHO is superior than the "intended version" released on Let It Be...Naked.) "Don't Let Me Down" was released on the Hey Jude compilation a couple of months in advance of Let It Be anyway, but regardless, including it is probably being a little TOO flexible, since it was actually first released as the B-side to Get Back in April 1969.]

    • Black Sabbath: TocarWicked World (only available on North America releases in 1970), *TocarPlanet Caravan (released in the UK in 1970, US 1971)
    • Creedence Clearwater Revival: TocarRun Through The Jungle
    • Miles Davis: TocarBitches Brew
    • Deep Purple: *TocarChild in Time
    • Derek & the Dominoes: Layla
    • The Doors: TocarPeace Frog
    • Funkadelic: TocarFree Your Mind And Your Ass Will Follow
    • Grand Funk Railroad: TocarSin's a Good Man's Brother
    • George Harrison: *Art of Dying
    • Jimi Hendrix: *TocarEzy Ryder
    • Led Zeppelin: Whole Lotta Love, Immigrant Song (and it's single B-side Hey Hey What Can I Do), *Since I've Been Loving You
    • John Lennon (with Plastic Ono Band): *God and *TocarWorking Class Hero
    • Dave Mason: TocarSad And Deep As You and Look at You, Look at Me
    • Paul McCartney: TocarMaybe I'm Amazed
    • Randy Newman: Mama Told Me Not to Come (or Three Dog Night - take your pick, though I prefer Newman's over 3DN's bigger hit version)
    • Pink Floyd: Atom Heart Mother
    • Santana: TocarHope You're Feeling Better
    • Wishbone Ash: *TocarErrors Of My Way and *TocarPhoenix
    • Neil Young: Southern Man

    Favorite Alternate Arrangements/Covers (original):
    • Black Sabbath: *Warning (Aynsley Dunbar Retaliation, 1967)
If you're listening on vinyl, best served paired with the preceding track Sleeping Village, which is how they're tracked together on the CD releases anyway.

    • Creedence Clearwater Revival: TocarI Heard It Through The Grapevine (Gladys Knight & The Pips, 1967; Marvin Gaye, 1968)

    • Santana: TocarBlack Magic Woman (single version, or TocarBlack Magic Woman/Gypsy Queen from Abraxas) (Fleetwood Mac, 1968)
There's a reason Santana's version is the definitive IMHO: the added conga, timbales and other percussion, and Gregg Rolie's organ and piano, provide that awesome "voodoo" element, but in truth I actually prefer Peter Green's original. Especially done live, such as captured on Live At The Boston Tea Party...recorded in early February 1970!

    \m/ (ò_ó) \m/

¹I've had a hard time staying timely and on track this past summer, whether because of an awesome-busy First Life summer, changes to the site & server problems here on Last, my own PC problems, whatever...sheesh. Now, I'm hoping the problems have been sorted out, and we're back to a bit more of a normal routine - though there is one crazy twist about to come (stay tuned Tuesday for the announcement of another of my "what-was-I-thinking?" ideas...).

I've been busy this week again, but using the offline time plotting & scheming. As we enter this, my favorite time of year, I am today bringing SotD out of Minimal Mode (hopefully for awhile), and have lined up what I hope proves to be quite an interesting editorial calendar for the fall & early winter blogging season!

²Of my Top 10 of 1970, one has been chosen previously as a SotD (just last month, in fact). Three artists contribute two songs, so I will choose just one from two of those, and one of them is a remake, so I will honor it specially.

  • Song Of The Day - 05 Aug 2008: Junk

    Ago 7 2008, 5h44 por sablespecter

    Paul McCartney / Junk / McCartney (6) / Apr 1970

It's Beatles Week! Day 3: Sir James Paul McCartney, MBE

    source: BBC

I'll continue my salute to the individual members with Macca, the "most successful" Beatle. One who has never had a problem accepting the special exceptions and royal treatment afforded him in a life of privilege. Though I tend to be cut more from John and George's cloth and uncomfortable with special entitlements and luxe treatment, I can't really fault McCartney for feeling entitled to it because, frankly, he's earned it, unlike so many others.

For me, Paul is the one member of The Beatles that in my mind doesn't trigger that split-second association with "Beatles" like the others do. This may be because he has been (1) alive, (2) prolific, and (3) high-profile as a solo artist during the bulk of the time that I have been active as a music fan. With John Lennon passing in 1980 and both George Harrison and Ringo Starr not being near as prolific or high-profile during the time since, they have maintained in my mind a more close association with The Beatles. Which is ironic since McCartney had been the one who wanted most badly to keep the band together and on track after Brian Epstein died, but it was his efforts to take over and shepherd the band that led to the increasingly acrimonious relations with John.

Year later, McCartney once telephoned Lennon and Lennon told him, "You're all pizza and fairytales!"

If by that Lennon meant that McCartney was sometimes a bit deluded and prone to some ill-advised choices, then I'd have to agree with him on that statement, e.g., deciding to record Band on the Run in Nigeria, No More Lonely Nights (the film), Heather Mills*...

    Story of the Day:
A sorta sad confession actually: when I was in high school the film Give My Regards To Broad Street came into theaters and the title track (see below) was in heavy rotation on MTV. As mentioned in the first post of the week, I had grown up hearing lots of Beatles music in the house and on the radio, so I knew who the four guys were. I knew they had broke up. I knew about John's solo music and knew right away when he had been shot because of my friend MH's huge obsession over John Lennon. But in my sad ignorance, I thought that McCartney's movie/video was his return to music. A friend of mine looked at me like I had been on Mars when I mentioned something like that when the video came on one time, because he knew that I knew the music of Wings! But I didn't know a lot of the songs of Wings were by Wings, and I didn't know that wings was McCartney's band all through the 70s until that discussion! <red face>

    Selection of the Day:
By late March 1970, Phil Spector was mixing Let It Be, but Paul's solo debut McCartney was finished. It was to be released April 17, a date which the other Beatles realized would conflict with the release of Let It Be.

Poor Ringo (again!), he got stuck with delivering the request to Paul to delay his release, but Paul just shooed him out of his house in defiance. Knowing Paul's tenuous confidence by that point, I'm sure it pained him to "shoot" Ringo the messenger, but it was a stance he took to assert his own independence. The album was released as planned, just a week after the "big announcement" we'll look at on Saturday.

Junk is a song written by Paul in 1968 when they were all in India. The Beatles passed on it twice, first considering it for The Beatles, then for Abbey Road. The demo that Paul did for the the White Album sessions is included on Anthology 3. It finally appeared on Paul's solo debut in two versions: this selection, and another version without lyrics but with mellotron (both great).

    Additional Favorite Tracks:
The only artist to reach the #1 slot on the U.K. charts as a soloist, duo, trio, quartet, quintet, and sextet! So he knows something about writing great songs.

Yesterday: The most covered song in history! Seven million plays on TV and radio here in America?? No doubt half of them have been within earshot of me! That's insane, but also attests to how much I like this song if I'm still not sick of it. I think his initial strong paranoia that he was suffering from a case of cryptomnesia when he first wrote it is quite funny.

TocarMaybe I'm Amazed: Today's selection is my favorite from his solo debut, but this one is likely the best one.

Come and Get It: Written for and a big hit for Badfinger, but Paul's demo finally came out on Anthology 3.

A lot of people really do not like the Wings era of McCartney's solo era, but being a child of the 70s, I was exposed as much to Wings music as I was Beatles music, so there's a big nostalgic soft spot for it even though it is generally secondary to Paul's Beatles contributions.

Band on the Run: The best Wings song! Of course, it's the one that's probably most Beatle-esque! Paul performed this live in Liverpool with Dave Grohl on guitar and backing vocals - cool. The Foo Fighters' cover version on the BBC Radio 1's 40th anniversary compilation album Radio 1. Established 1967 is the one track from that which I think is worth having.

Nineteen Hundred and Eighty-Five: I like the Roger Waters-ish tack this song takes by looping around to the beginning of the album by ending with a segment of the opening track.

Listen to What the Man Said: Other than John Coltrane or Wayne Shorter, this is probably the only song I like with soprano sax. Just a nostalgic love of this one.

Silly Love Songs: What's the best way to defang your critics? Give 'em exactly what they're deriding you for! And fans ate it up, sending it to #1 and making it one of the top songs of the 70s. Some may say that's not saying much: a lot of the songs of the 70s were as maudlin and saccharine, but yep, I have a strong nostalgic bent for this song, too.

TocarWith A Little Luck: From the last Wings album that I like.

TocarMull of Kintyre: The non-album hit from the London Town days. Can you not like this if you have Scots heritage? Apparently so if you're a U.S. fan, but the UK fans sure loved it. I do, too.

TocarNo More Lonely Nights: Ah, what sap! But this was a high school Emm Tee Vee staple, and features David Gilmour on guitar, anyway.

If "No More Lonely Nights" isn't sappy enough, how about the smarmy duets between this king of pop and The King of Pop:
TocarThe Girl Is Mine and Say Say Say!

TocarHere Today: Based on a poem that's a tribute to Lennon. Well said.

    And of course...
"Pizza and Fairytales" from Memory Almost Full (Wait! Wasn't it supposed to be on that??) :D

This Day in Beatles History: August 4, 1965 - Help! hits #1 in the U.K. A nice tip toward tomorrow's story.

Bonus Material: What started my true appreciation of the music & story of The Beatles: The Beatles Anthology. This is basically one long narrative of the entire story of the band, as told by Paul, George, and Ringo themselves in conjunction with Yoko Ono and the words of John from tons of sources. It also includes recollections of George Martin, Neil Aspinall, and Derek Taylor, as well as lots of photos and materials from the personal archives of the band members and of both Apple Records and EMI. It's one of those huge "coffee table" books, but unlike most of those, it's also a real page-turner!

Don't forget to tune into The Beatles Marathon all day Thursday on WBWC!

    \m/ (`°_°´) \m/

*The 30-year relationship of Sir & Lady McCartney is IMHO one of rock's greatest romances. McCartney's said that he and Linda were apart less than a week the whole time they were married (D & I should be so lucky...) Linda was the one who got him through those dark nights of the soul as The Beatles broke up, and helped him out of his depression over losing them. In truth, I think that she was for him a replacement for the Beatles, and it was actually the absence of The Beatles in his life that allowed him to become so dedicated a husband and father. Heather or otherwise, he's gotta know he's never going to find another Linda.
