for all the news on Sick Kids scope out http://sickkids.tumblr.com

    Weerd Science - http://myspace.com/weerdscience
Weerd Science is the heart and soul of Joshua Eric Eppard. Often mislabeled as, "nerd rap," Weerd Science is difficult to categorize. Josh crafts his own beats with Wavis (and sometimes CJB or Dirty Ern). The first album (Friends and Nervous Breakdowns) is a compilation of older tracks. The second album, Sick Kids, will be released this winter and features live instruments, many of which were performed by Josh himself, Wavis and CJB. Joey Eppard, stand up bassist Matt Goldpaugh (Matty The Knife), Clip Payne (P-Funk), Adam Wirnoff (Lenny Kravitz, Stoney Clove Lane, Mechanical Bull, Mercury Rev), Majestic, Anni Krueger, Gangstroph The Baptist are featured on SiKi.

    3 - http://myspace.com/officialbandthree
3 was originally formed in 1992/3 as Joey Eppard on guitar, Chris (CJB) Bittner on bass and Josh Eppard on drums. Josh picked up the drums specifically for this band and stayed with them until about 1999. In 1997 they were signed to Universal Records, but then subsequently dropped due to the Universal/Polygram merger. Josh did some studio work and eventually joined Shabutie in 2001. Shabutie became Coheed and Cambria, where he remained until 2006. Josh now puts all his effort into his heart: Weerd Science. CJB remained with 3 until 2001 and became a producer at the infamous Applehead Studio in Woodstock, NY (Coheed and Cambria, Anadivine, Codeseven, The Sleeping, Straylight Run, John Mayer, Tony Levin, Bad Brains are among the endless albums with CJB's imprint). Joey Eppard is still with 3. Their music incorporates many genres and cannot be explained verbally. You've gotta hear it for yourself to understand.

    Joey Eppard - http://myspace.com/joeyeppard
Joey Eppard is a very diverse musician with a distinctive vocal and guitar sound. His style of playing has been referred to as a hybrid of flamenco and slap fingerpicking, but Joey's just Joey. His band is and always has been 3 and he involves himself in many other projects- including several with P-Funk members (Drugs, 420 Funk Mob, Cacophonic fm). He's soulful, funky, and metal.

    Mours - http://myspace.com/themours
Mours is Josh Eppard's developing rock band. It's core members are Josh, Dave "Wavis" Parker and Ant "Session 606" Masington. Together they are Mours. They have an album in the works, but currently have shared only two rough tracks.

    Session 606 - http://myspace.com/session606
Session 606 is a full band project consisting of one young man, Anthony Masington (Mours). The album is a work in progress, however, he has shared several demos and occasionally opens for Weerd Science, solo acoustic. Ant Masington also plays guitar in Weerd Science's live shows.

  • A Dad trying to define Dad Rock?

    Out 8 2009, 12h08 por ACKthehack

So I am sitting on my exercise bike listen to old 80's hardcore punk Bad Brains and Black Flag the shuffle was stuck in the 'Bs'.

I made a horrid mistake of picking up Spin magazine because it had Wilco on the cover. The pictures were fun and he has a really cool loft pad for hanging out with the band and the kids and such. The article was ok but kind of rambling going from this is what Jeff Tweedy is like as a dad straight into nearly two large pages of verbage on the full history of Tweedy and his entire career rehash.

Ok that is fine. But there is this term he kept throwing out - he said Wilco was Dad Rock.

Ok, I chuckle to myself a 40 year old dad of three that is cute but I read the definition and laughed.

Is it this definition which appears immediately dated.

Dad Rock is the standard set of albums from the 60s and 70s that every boomer likes. Boomers try to get younguns to listen to dad rock by loading up "best albums ever" lists with them. Dad rockers have no desire to listen to recent music and are stuck in the past.

Is this a 40yr old wannabe hipster definition of what?

Huh? Maybe if your my age your dad still listens to that.

If you are closer to Gen X with teenage kids then buddy your dad is listening to eighties nostalgia rock and old hair metal. Yes, it really does seem to be the trend of people my age or just a few years older. Its the only CDs they own.

I just know that ain't Wilco.

The bigger more complete definition though makes a bit more sense but still not as a definition of what Tweedy's band is doing. At least its not as dated.

Dad rock is defined as the genre of music that is listened to uniquely by fathers, not grandfathers or children or mothers (though mothers may have adapted survival strategies to tolerate or ignore dad rock music). To be a dad rocker, you must own albums by all of the following three defining bands of the dad rock genre: Tom Petty and The Heart Breakers, Phill Collins, and Sting. Dad rock is most commonly heard blasting out of cameros, el caminos, vans, and large trucks on cassette or from the home on vinyl or, occassionaly, compact disc.
The triangle of dad rock power consists of Phill Collinsand Sting making up the base corners with Tom Petty at the apex. Within the triangle, you can expect to find other artists, though we hestitate to define them here.

Ok above it what I think of when I personally think of the term "Dad Rock" or at least what it immediately conjures up in my mind.

But that still does not fit Wilco though the Spin magazine folks threw the label at the band at least 3 or 4 times in the article.

    Maybe the third definition ?

Music that Boomers would listen to and/or write themselves. Picturing a 35-50 year old dance to these tracks puts your stomach in a knot. Inherently uncool. However, some very good bands today write embarrasing Dad Rock tracks.

They also tend to have long titles.
U2 - Stuck In A Moment..., Sometimes You Can't Make It..., Coldplay - God Put A Smile..., A Rush Of Blood, Oasis - Little By Little, Where Did It All Go Wrong?

Ok I can see someone saying that Tweedy was writing songs that a dad if all dad's had musical talent might write themselves.

    What do you think?

  • CDs I want to buy.

    Out 1 2009, 13h36 por Spark_and_Spark

Yeah, I'm a bit obsessed with making lists.

The "want" in the title indicates my lack of money.
When I get a job I'll hopefully be crossing off these CDs.
Forget buying food, albums are more important!

This list will be be growing regularly as I keep discovering new bands.
And if you're reading this for whatever reason, feel free to comment or recommend a CD you'd think I might like.
