I still stand by this album. I think it's the most well-written thing they ever did. Fontanelle and Spanking Machine are both stellar punk albums, but I really like the sound they have with this; it still has its rough edges but is more melodic while maintaining a certain sort of messiness. That, and "Surd" has some of the most intense vocals I've ever heard in my life.

What a disappointment after Fontanelle. It's not a matter of quality, because it's still got good songs, but for fuck's sake it sounds like someone force-fed Kat, Lori and Maureen a metric crap-ton of Valium before they recorded anything, and surgically removed all their punk influences. So all the fast energy of Fontanelle gets replaced with plodding, sludgy faux-metal grinding that gets really wearying and chore-like to listen to by the end. Sweet '69 at least has a nice Mudhoney vibe to it, Middle Man has an interesting time-signature dissonance between the bass and drums, and the first half's got good riffs, but would it have fucking killed them to punk it up and play the songs at any tempo above "mid-tempo death march"? Kat can scream all she want but it doesn't change the fact that songs like "Memory" sound like they're too tired/lazy to play them properly.

I think it's a great album but it fucks it up with the last three tracks :/ [2]

This is definitely their most melodically diverse album. As much as I love Spanking Machine and Fontanelle, you have to admit that a great deal of the songs sound similar... or maybe it's not even that they sound similar necessarily, just that they're hard to differentiate from one another. This album is their most evolved though for sure.
