Well, I hit another used CD place this week. This time Fantasyland Records in Buckhead. Got some pretty good finds too...I think. I was excited to find the Anthony Phillips album, on vinyl yet, but have read since that it is the more pedestrian of his efforts, and certainly not up to his Genesis-like work on The Geese and the Ghost. I still have to listen to it though, so I can't say myself.
Zani Diabate, I would assume by name is a relative of Toumani Diabate the kora player, but that *is* an assumption on my part; the sparse liner notes do list him as being a Malian Griot, but make no mention of the world renowned Toumani or his legendary father Sidiki Diabate. The music is much more R&B orientated than I would have imagined, but still keeps that traditional sound that I love from West Africa.
I am a huge Rush fan. Until relatively recently, however, I felt their best effort ended with Signals with perhaps a two tracks from Grace Under Pressure thrown in. Sure I bought the later albums when they came out, but returned more and more to listening to the "classic' albums from earlier in their career.
Well, I've started buying the back catalog in anticipation of seeing them play later this month. And you know what? This stuff rocks! A cliche, perhaps, but none the less true.
The Peter Gabriel album is a soundtrack to the film "Rabbit-proof Fence" about children from the "Stolen Generation" of Australian Aborigines. The music is beautiful, of course, but if you can catch the film (it shows here in the States on IFC quite a bit) I would recommend it for its story as well.

it's true.

musicians well-known or not have long been subject to unfair discrimination merely on the basis of their fans. it matters not whether they deliberately made "stupid" music (ie. manowar and their trve metal delusions), the issue inevitably leans toward the realization of unfulfilled expectations. name just one musician whose "technical prowess" nor "seniority in the field" wasn't even the benchmark for judging first-impression respectability.

see, we get recommendations from wherever, first thing other people will use to try and get your attention would be the reasons why particular musicians are "good". virtuosity, wellness in composition/execution, the lot of other similar methods in describing their "uniqueness", all the while lacking some critical component that separates truly good music from crap: soul. yes, this. hearing a musician's work one can sometimes hear bits and pieces of the artist's beliefs and motivations. the spark that makes them human, their flaws and vulnerabilities notwithstanding. the reason to respect (and like) singers when their songs obviously aren't groundbreaking in so many ways, the reason to respect (and like) other forms of music whose "charm" resides not in complexity or something like it.

thanks to overzealous critics and fans unfortunately that is NOT the case. what will you hear from these people? that overbearing sense of superiority that places those musicians at some pedestal like idols to kneel prostate upon, devoid of anything that'll piss off prospective suckers listeners, always assuming complete and astute comprehension on receiving end. the greeks had the right idea at least, "humanizing" their gods with scandalous affairs and other such things despite being much more than (boy-loving) men.

the cumulative effect is that of the artist looking like shit and pretentious in, again, so many ways. for every musician out there with something "intelligent" to say there exists legions of 'tards unable to grasp even a whit of self-deprecating witticism, priding themselves superior to others just by apt appreciation of the music. never resort to technicality as an ultimate basis for judging arts and artists.

indiefags, hipsters, the all-encompassing juvenile collective of music subcultures; the guiltiest of the lot. metalfags second to them only because metalfags sometimes CAN walk the walk despite their horrendous inability at sarcasm (and pretty much every other aspect of normal socialization). what sets indiefags apart is their total lack of moderation. moderation over their own mouths and keyboards, that is. everything either "sucks" or "the best", again focusing on physical finesse and dexterity when it really is the charm that sets their musicians apart. even musicians themselves can fall into this shortsighted biasing, difficult to tell unless the disparity becomes apparent between the actions and the words.


your hubris will be your own undoing.





but of course, humorless twits are prime pickings for the easy acquisition of lulz, IRL or OL. bato-bato sa langit, ang tamaan ay huwag magagalit, ang pikon ay laging talo. the lot of you enraged with such petty slanderings of your favorite bands' music are the losers, stop blaming others for your inability to see so. oh wait.... BAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAA

It was also nice to have one of the musicians introducing the bands (and frequently engaging in amusing conversations with the audience), namely Johnny Kalsi of The Dhol Foundation, who I didn't actually see perform unfortunatly.
