I suppose everybody has them: tracks you listen to when something specific is going on...songs that make you feel a certain way or make you remember people and places. These songs inspire different emotions in different people, and, naturally, your view may be quite idiotic to somebody else. Here are a few songs and my idiotic view of them.

1. Whenever I return to my apartment after a night out, usually just as the Sun is being reborn, I sit on my balcony and smoke. And reflect on the night just passed, I suppose, as well as on life in general. And there are only two tracks on the playlist at such an hour, Mostly I listen to End of the Night by The Doors. An obvious choice I know, but it just beckons me to lie down in bed and plunge head first into oblivion. Or bliss. Whatever the sentiment, be it dark or full of joy, "End of the Night" is just perfect to listen to in private as a new day breaks...if there are still any cigarettes left. Epic, epic, epic. The other song I was talking about is 041 by Azra. It's in Croatian (so I relate better), it's grounded in my city (Zagreb), it's full of our little rituals and hidden despair and hope that the next day will either be better than the nightmare which is finally behind us or that the new day will be more that just a shadow of a great, magical night. The best song Azra ever made, I think. God, I love it.

2. If just before the onset of a voyage you lose someone (or someone loses you or hurts you or betrays you - and still you proceed to love them), and you wind up on a train (or a bus, or a plane...), broken and yet full of hope that the journey ahead will somehow offer relief - Going to California by Led Zeppelin is the song for you. Obvious, again, I know, but so utterly honest and to the point. No self-delusion in this song...and yet it remains gentle and human. Robert Plant's voice so perfectly on top of Jimmy and his guitar. Instanly, upon hearing it, I am consumed with wanderlust. If there are any cigarettes left. A rover's song if ever there was one. (Other great wanderer songs, for me at least, are Highwayman by The Highwaymen, The Rover by Led Zeppelin and Thirty Foot Trailer performed by Luke Kelly of The Dubliners. Oh, yeah, I almost forgot about Tangled Up in Blue and Don't Think Twice, It's All Right by
Bob Dylan. He has so many I neglect them, for some reason. Stupid of me.)

3. Picture this...you've held a grudge againt yourself; some sin, burried deep, "like a splinter in your mind..." And then it turns out you're innnocent. You have nothing to hate yourself for. You never did. All at once, freedom and a certain, cheap kind of redemption, joyous and loud, become apparent and yours. And then the car radio (dawn is, again, the perfect setting for this scenario) starts playing Baba O'Riley by The Who. First of all, it is a damn happy song. Laughably so. I love it because of this. And then Roger Daltrey says, rather matter-of-factly, that:

"Out here in the fields
I fight for my meals
I get my back into my living
I dont need to fight
To prove Im right
I don't need to be forgiven"

And all is well.

Except there are no fuckin' cigarettes left.
