If a band can't be described by any one of these adjectives, they have no reason existing.

Let it also be known that 'mainstream', 'popular', 'money', and 'successful' equals bad. Disgrace. Abomination. Such simplicity is the beauty of this flawless way of thinking.

As I ponder more on the idea, it becomes more and more apparent that the best thing we can do is hold this ideology as close to our mind and heart as we can. Great and brilliant is the architect behind such a mindset. With it, we can have the luxury of letting these rules and regulations govern our thoughts, opinions, and knowledge.

Fantastic, isn't it?

A musician's ability to play music should be defined by how many fans he/she has. Good bands are defined by how unknown or underground they are. If a band is making a good amount of profit, they suck. They are a shit band and don't know anything about music. How aggressive a band's music is also determines their musical talent. Another fundamental law is that the earliest releases from a band's discography will always be their best ones. They are hallowed records and must be held above all else regardless of how inexperienced as musicians the band was starting out. Do not seek out a musician's ground work or procedure for music development when determining their competency - you can learn all of that just by looking at how popular they are.

What's this? People actually want to make their music sound like shit? Low audio quality is cool? Generally this is the idea behind Raw Black Metal.

Now, I'm all for cold atmosphere. I love a cold, dark feeling in my music, and raw black metal can usually deliver that. A common occurrence I see happening more often than it should is an abuse to this style in the frame of mind that because the audio quality is low and production cheap, it is easy to do this style. Now, if you simply lower the audio quality on the music you make normally, most of the time it's just going to sound like shit. That's what the lower audio quality is meant to do. You don't just make music and put it to a low quality setting and it "magically" turns your music into a colder, darker style. In my experience as a listener and fan of this style, the best Raw Black Metal atmosphere comes from music that is developed especially for this style, keeping in mind the feeling you want to achieve while writing the music, rather than hoping the low audio setting will achieve that for you. Yes, lower quality does make your music have a rougher, harsher sound. However without the sense of malice or darkness in mind when creating the music especially for this style, it's just going to sound like rough, harsh shit. Or horseshit.

I love listening to raw black metal, however one of my biggest gripes when shopping around for a new band to listen to is finding a band under this genre that does regular black metal and simply lowers the audio quality and by some incredible phenomenon it makes it raw black metal. Or so they hope. Oh well. I can appreciate the direction they're trying to head, but in my opinion it'd sound much better with music that sounds as if achieving the raw black metal sound was exclusively in mind during development.

So that's one rant. Another rant I have about raw black metal is the way that it sometimes seems to be used as a crutch. This correlates very well with my opinion on drum machines and other superficial development tools. I enjoy death metal also, and many bands (not just death metal) have drumming segments in their songs where it is obvious that no human is playing that. I can think of a song or two from one of my favorite bands, Iperyt, where the drumming is insanely fast, that it's very apparent that a drum machine or some other tool is behind it. I've seen videos where Behemoth plays live, and of course during their songs with fast blastbeats, you see Inferno there just banging on a drum here and there, obviously not responsible for the fast blastbeats. The aggressive element introduced in songs by this style is great, yes, but it does still take a little bit away from the enjoyment factor when you know that it's fake. Any 13-year old nerd can work software and program a computer. Usually a respectable amount of my enjoyment of music comes from the talent required to play it. So the artificial blastbeats sound awesome yes, but they do take away slightly from the enjoyment factor.

So what does any of that have to do with raw black metal? Well, the idea that they're utilizing a technology to alter the sound of their music that they would otherwise be unable to achieve. I'm not totally against that idea however. Of course I do appreciate the innovation factor and the different sounds people can make as they experiment with different tools. But on a fundamental level, it does slightly take away from my enjoyment factor when a band relies on a technology to produce a sound that they would not be able to produce themselves. And unless a vocalist's voice was seriously fucked up, and the instruments didn't work properly, (and even if that were the case), you wouldn't be able to replicate the sound of raw black metal. It relies on the technology (more specifically, the lack thereof), of reducing the audio quality to achieve the sound you want. With care taken during development, you can eventually produce a fantastic raw black metal atmosphere. It makes for a great listen, but of course there is still the fact that they would be unable to create that sound themselves, and thus relied on technical means to achieve it. It can sound good but it does also take away some of my enjoyment of the music somewhat.

BLACK METAL (1981-Present) An extreme subgenre of heavy metal. Usually makes use of fast tempos, high-pitched shrieking vocals, and unconventional song structures. First Wave included bands such as Venom, Bathory, Hellhammer and Celtic Frost. A Second Wave emerged in the early 1990s, which consisted primarily of Norwegian bands such as Mayhem, Burzum, Darkthrone, Immortaland Emperor.
