Bored...wandering about my own page and I realize I can do a whole journal thing? Eh...its the end of the year, and everyone and their mothers doing a "best of" so why not me...A look at my charts tell me these are my top 10s for 2009:

10: Metallica (notice that for the most part that its only pre-2000 Metallica)
9: Foo Fighters (Dave Grohl attempting to sing "Stairway to Heaven" (key word: attempting) is awesome
8: Eminem (Relapse came out, figured I brush up on Encore before checking it out)
7: The Killers ("Spaceman" wasnt memorable, yet it was compelling)
6: Matchbox Twenty (And yet I STILL havent picked up Exile on Mainstream)

Best album of 2009.
Paramore- brand new eyes
Honestly, this album exceeded all my expectations. Showing they are so, so much more than the 'pop-punk/ emo' category many have unfortunately threw them into, this album doesn't bore you for one second, between the alarmingly catchy Brick By Boring Brick and the haunting Misguided Ghosts, the country leanings of The Only Exception and the jaw dropping vocals in All I Wanted. Other favourites I have on this album are Careful, Looking Up, Playing God, Turn It Off- although really, there isn't a bad track on this album.


Bands I discovered in 2009.
2009 was an amazing year for me as far as discovering bands goes. The most important would be the re-discovering Brand New. Although I first heard them in 2003, purchasing Deja Entendu after hearing The Quiet Things That No-One Ever Knows and Sic Transit Gloria... Glory Fades, I discarded it after only a few tracks as it was 'too emo'. In fact, it was only this year after Last.fm threw tracks like Okay I Believe You, but My Tommy Gun Don't at me that I realised how wrong I'd been. Either that or I was way smarter at the age of eleven than I am now, I don't know. And then after dusting off Deja Entendu, I got into Your Favourite Weapon and The Devil And God Are Raging Inside Me, by which point a suddenly had a new favourite band.

Other bands of note I got into this year include Dashboard Confessional which was basically the soundtrack to my summer, getting properly into bands I'd previously skitted around like Jimmy Eat World and Bayside, and of course expanding my tastes with things I wouldn't have looked at a year ago, like Cobra Starship and Tegan and Sara.


Gig Of The Year.
I've thought about it, and I can't call it. I was fortunate enough to see four of my very favourite bands this year, and will remember those nights for the rest of my life. I got to meet four fifths of Taking Back Sunday, caught Billie Joe Armstrong's guitar pick and got to see Paramore and You Me At Six on the same night. 2009 will go down as an amazing live year for me.


Worst Thing About 2009.
There are several events I can think of, which all seem to centre around the fact that 2009 has it out for frickin' everybody. I write these words approximately nine hours after I learned of the untimely death of Avenged Sevenfold's The Rev, and it really hasn't sunk in yet. While I don't listen to Avenged Sevenfold quite as much as I once did (usual story- ex got me into them, can't listen to them without being reminded of him) I retain a tremendous amount of respect for them and The Rev's death has utterly shocked me. He will be sorely missed.

2009 also seems to have had it out for bands splitting up and losing members. Panic at the Disco was the one that upset me the most, although I'm very optimistic about their future as just Brendon and Spencer. Cute Is What We Aim For breaking up, Craig Owens leaving Chiodos, Fall Out Boy's suspicious sounding hiatus, and a lot more. Seriously, what is with this year?


Best Thing About 2010.
Despite so many bands splitting up this year, it doesn't quite cancel out my excitement that blink-182 is back. Blink were one of the most important bands to me when I was getting into music all those years ago, and I was gutted when they split. I didn't believe any of the reunion rumours and never dreamed they'd get back together, so when I heard they were back I was literally crying with happiness. Admittedly it will all really depend on what sort of music they release next, but many people seem to have forgotten that they've only been gone for about six years- many bands have gone longer than that between albums without splitting up without it affecting the quality of the output.
