  • My Ausmusic Month 100 greatest Aussie songs by Me + Gareth Liddiard's top 5 tracks

    Nov 24 2009, 14h36 por BlackCoffeeDuck

November is almost over so I better do this or I'll never do it. Here in Australia on Triple J radio is Ausmusic month and ABCTV show Rage has joined in this year too. In Jmag The Drones won the top spot in their "Greatest Aussie Song Ever" Top 30 as voted by Aussie muso's. Winning with TocarShark Fin Blues, which got the most votes and so should they, check it all out here: http://blogs.abc.net.au/triplej/2009/10/greatest-aussie-songs-ever.html

Plus the other night The Drones won two A.I.R. Awards for "Independent Artist Of The Year" and "Best Independent Album" for Havilah and so should they too, check it out here: http://www.airawards.com.au/ (also they should win every A.R.I.A. award at the end of this week but will miss out more than likely because well, it's the crappy arias). Anyway I'm going to re-post Gareth Liddiard from The Drones top five votes for Jmag's greatest Aussie songs, which are:
    AC/DC - Jailbreak
    Dirty Three - Hope
Kim Salmon - Obvious Is Obvious
    Laughing Clowns - Collapse Board
    X - Revolution
Cool, eh? Plus now triple J’s "Like A Version Vol. 5" album is coming out at the end of this month with The Drones doing Suicide is Painless cover on it, yipee!

Now I was going to do a top 30 tracks too but it got bigger and bigger until it has turned into 100 tracks. It is my choices so most likely no one will agree with me (You could make your own too). These tracks are just my all-time favorite tracks from Aussie bands that I love and could listen to them forever. Also I have somehow numbered them too, which was so hard but I'll post it now because it's round about right (maybe tracks could go up or down in time) But to me these are the greatest Aussie songs ever. OK, that is it. I think I've picked a bit of everything but maybe more obscure than your normal top 100 Aussie chart. If you don't know something which sounds good to you please let me know and I'll do my best in letting you know where or how you can find it. I was going to write a line or two on each song but it really would take forever to do that so it's just a big long list again. There was reasons why for all of them and where they ended up in the chart but you can tell what I like and what I don't and a lot of bands or artists have been left out but I don't like them as much as the songs above. These I would listen to forever and if I could take over Triple J this is what I would play for you. What do you think???

  • BEFORE TOO LONG: triple js tribute to Paul Kelly

    Out 13 2009, 0h40 por nattogc

The centrepiece of our Aus Music Month celebrations this year will be Before Too Long triple js tribute to Paul Kelly.

In recent years triple j has organised tributes to You Am I, AC/DC and The Go-Betweens. Our upcoming tribute to Paul Kelly will follow on from those successful events and be the biggest one yet.
Over two nights at The Forum Theatre in Melbourne we have invited some of todays best artists to interpret the songs of Paul Kelly. The lineup will star Missy Higgins, John Butler, Paul Dempsey, Katy Steele, Bob Evans, Ozi Batla, Dan Kelly, Clare Bowditch, Jae Laffer, Adalita, Dan Sultan, Megan Washington plus members of Augie March as the backing band and Ashley Naylor from Even as Musical Director.

This year marks Paul Kellys 30th anniversary as a solo recording artist (his debut single "Recognition" was released in 1979). This is the perfect moment for triple j to acknowledge and highlight his enormous contribution to Australian music. Kelly has crafted a heartfelt catalogue of songs that speak to successive generations. Many of his songs have captured the essence of what it is to be Australian. His strength as a songwriter and storyteller has inspired a whole raft of musicians working today.

Richard Kingsmill (triple j Music Director): "There is a huge amount of respect and admiration within the Australian music industry - not to mention the public as well - to Paul and all that he's achieved. He has been so consistent over the years and has a huge body of work behind him. I can't think of many other artists that could match it for diversity and strength. And it's a body of work that continues to grow, he's not slowing down at all. The level of enthusiasm that the performers have shown towards this event was uniformly high. It made it clear to us that a tribute to the man was long overdue. He is one of our songwriting greats and worthy of celebrating."

Missy Higgins I love They Thought I Was Asleep. All Pauls stories take you on a ride somewhere that feels, somehow, like one of your own memories.

Paul Dempsey The first time I heard Dumb Things, it completely blew me away. So much energy and melody. It just picks you up and tosses you around.

Bob Evans The opening strains of From St Kilda to Kings Cross began to play. It was beautiful so melancholy and full of nostalgia for places that I had just begun to travel to myself.

  • 5 RockWiz duets: Glenn, Amanda, Clare, Ed, Sarah, Mick, Jodi, Kim, Adalita & Gareth

    Set 28 2009, 11h08 por BlackCoffeeDuck

Well, to start with on Saturday night (3rd of October) the new season which is the seventh season of RockWiz starts. The first episode begins with Andrew Stockdale (Wolfmother) & Holiday Sidewinder (Bridezilla) which could be hit or miss which is what happens with this show. If you don't know it, RockWiz is an Aussie TV show on SBS channel. You can find it online and here is all the past guests you can click on names or numbers to see all the clips go here: http://www.sbs.com.au/rockwiz/browse/artist

What I mean by hit or miss is how and who are on together. What happens is two "Singers" who are from mainly Aussie bands are matched up against each other with two crowd members each who are quizzed with music related questions. The show is filmed in a pub in Melbourne and sometimes the guests are a bit drunk too. At the end of the show both sing a duet together which can be train wrecks or masterpieces. I've picked out my personal favorites but only five songs from six previous seasons. All these clips below are on youtube but some others I love are not there. Check out Neko Case & Josh Pyke, Jen Cloher & Ron Peno, Taasha Coates & Gareth Liddiard to start with if you go to the RockWiz website, I would recommend them to you.

#1. Glenn Richards & Amanda Brown's Some Velvet Morning is the most ambitious duet ever on the show. To me it's unbelievable and I would say it's better than any of the other TocarSome Velvet Morning covers, maybe even the original by Nancy Sinatra & Lee Hazlewood. There are a lot of covers but it always seems like it doesn't work and just a bit pointless because the song is already so great that it never comes out right until this one below, did I already say it's unbelievable?

Glenn Richards is from Augie March and Amanda Brown is from The Go-Betweens.

#2. Clare Bowditch & Ed Kuepper's Summer Wine is such a beautiful version of another Nancy Sinatra & Lee Hazlewood song TocarSummer Wine. This I think is also better than the original, and a close second but the Some Velvet Morning arrangement is just insane. It seems Summer Wine is Nancy & Lee's top track on last.fm too.

Clare Bowditch plays under her own name but plays with her band Clare Bowditch and The Feeding Set too. Ed Kuepper plays under his name too but has been in and reformed The Saints and Laughing Clowns lately.

#3. Sarah Blasko & Mick Harvey's Sundown, Sundown is a beautiful version of yet again another Nancy Sinatra & Lee Hazlewood's TocarSundown, Sundown. Maybe I just like all the Nancy & Lee covers on this show. I don't know these three are the only ones but they are all great songs and these are very beautiful duet covers but this one has to be under the first two.

Sarah Blasko has just released her third solo album. Mick Harvey has just left Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.

#4. Jodi Phillis & Kim Salmon's It Takes Two is a Motown classic by Marvin Gaye & Kim Weston. TocarIt Takes Two recorded in late 1966 and a hit in in January of 1967. Later turned into a soft drink ad by two horrible people but forget about that and watch this.

Jodi Phillis was the co-frontwoman of The Clouds and has gone solo since. Kim Salmon has been in or is in Scientists, Beasts of Bourbon, Kim Salmon & the Surrealists, Kim Salmon And The Business, Antenna, Darling Downs and Salmon.

#5. Adalita & Gareth Liddiard's Messin' With The Kid is written by Ed Kuepper and Chris Bailey, from The Saints album (I'm) Stranded album from 1976. Its youtube clip has the last round of questions so the song starts at about 3:30 mark but you'll get the idea of the show from this anyway if you've never seen it before but the duet cover is amazing so wait for it.

Adalita is from Magic Dirt and Gareth Liddiard is from The Drones.

"The Beat Goes On: Duets Volume 3" album is due out in November. I hope my favorites make it on the album. Two past volumes of duets are available too.

Have you got a favorite for RockWiz duet??? Who should be on RockWiz in the new season??? Or just what do you think about the show??? Or have you even heard about it before???

  • Augie March with Gaz and Dan from The Drones LIVE!!!

    Set 27 2009, 4h59 por BlackCoffeeDuck

A night with two of my favorite bands together for one night only. Fri 21 Aug – Watch Me Set My Strange Sun You Bloody Choir at The Fly By Night Club was the venue for the Perth or should I say Freo show of the last Augie March tour for a very long, long time. This is because band members want to do other things, whatever that means? But just the another day Paul Kelly announced a Perth show at Kings Park this summer with guess who supporting? Augie March also with Clare Bowditch playing too which sound great to me. Maybe it's a one off show because Paul Kelly asked, how would you say "No" to him. This gig was around this time last month but I was looking at my journal and saw it's not there so something must have happened when I went to post it. It will hopeful go up today but I better double check these from now on.

To start with Gareth Liddiard and Dan Luscombe from The Drones. “One of the greatest bands in Australia or the World right now” according to Glenn Richards singer-songwriter from a band you might have heard of and I have to agree with him. If you haven't seen this band live you should, even just half of them is great playing an acoustic supporting slot. These guys could have played all night. Great selection of old and new songs with Gareth sitting on bar stool looking like he's about to fall of at any moment with his acoustic guitar in his lap. I've heard about his solo shows but most are over East, as far as I'm aware this is his first one here in WA. Dan played keyboard piano, slide electric guitar and acoustic too. Starting with a few songs from Havilah, a couple from Wait Long by the River and the Bodies of Your Enemies Will Float By. Finishing with one from Gala Mill. Starting with TocarCareful As You Go then introing TocarOh My as a song about, “All you cunts dieing but me and Dan die too, so it all fair” I can't remember ever seeing a band telling the crowd there all go to die and calling us all cunts at the same time which is just another reason why I love this band. Played TocarThe Drifting Housewife which is “A divorce song” TocarShark Fin Blues and TocarLocust which is about “Growing up over here” (Gareth is Perth born). Dan was complaining about the sound and couldn't hear himself and Gareth announcing, “Your fold back monitors are fucked, Mate.” to the sound guy in his long drawn out aussie accent.

Finishing the set with an epic version of TocarJezebel. After I turned around and Fiona Kitschin, The Drones bass player was standing behind me. So maybe Mike Noga, their drummer wanted a break before their big U.S. and Europe tours? Since writing this last month The Drones are starting the European Tour tomorrow and finished their U.S. tour which included the Don't Look Back performs of Wait Long By The River And The Bodies Of Your Enemies Will Float Back at ATP New York 2009. Please if you saw the show let me know how it was. I would have love to see the Dirty Three Performing Ocean Songs, Suicide Performing 1st Album, The Jesus Lizard and off course The Flaming Lips, but back to the gig I was at about month ago.

You would think if the support band was having problems, if you were the sound guy you would fix it before the main band comes on. So when Augie March comes on stage the first thing Glenn says is “I can't hear anything” and after the second song he hits the microphone and starts talking to the roadies. He apologizes to the crowd but he did a lot of that all night and the last thing he said is “Goodnight, Sorry for all the fuck-ups tonight”. I haven't seen someone have such a bad night on stage since Cat Power's melt down before she entered rehab a few years ago. Unlike her, they finished songs but stopping one song and then starting again before finishing it so really it was nothing like her show.

A couple of years ago Augie March played one of the greatest shows I've ever seen, so this is the polar opposite. I think both bands The Drones and Augie March are bands you miss out huge by not seeing them live but both have had really great shows which really, really wonderfully great. I've seen them both quite a few times in the last few years and would still rate them both as the best bands in the 2000's. I would recommended you, my dear journal reader to seeing both Augie March and The Drones live and at the moment they were together on the bill so I wish the sound guy would have fixed it, whatever it was but it threw out Glenn at the beginning of the night and was a bit put out the rest of the night and after a few more songs he said “All I can hear now is fuzz”. I've never played live music but it must be frustrating someone else controlling what you're hearing. Some of it was a bit of a mess like him singing the same verse three time in a row which he apologised again for after the song. But Glenn was the most chatty with the crowd I've ever seen him but I think they or us, the crowd were the positive to his negative. Negative would be one word to describe him that night, but then again it's not like he writes sweet and happy little pop songs, or something like that.

The Glenn Richards quote of the night would have to be: “The word abomination is flashing in front of my eye now” which is a bit melodramatic, it wasn't that bad, Glenn. His solo or side-project from a few years back was on sale at this gig too called Closed Off, Cold & Bitter - Life As A Can Of Beer G. A. Richards & The Dark Satanic Mills Bros. which is a very long E.P. with a version of TocarBottle Baby which was re-record by Augie March for the Moo album. The Horn players were a great addition for the live band too.

Highlights was TocarThere Is No Such Place with a coughing and spiting fit, and then band member introductions in the middle of the song. TocarOne Crowded Hour with laughing and telling the front row to “shut-up becaues he's only played this song a couple of times before” in the first verse. David Williams, the drummer telling Glenn to sing like Joanna Newsom would have to be another funny bit. Strange Bird album highlighted heavily. The Keepa, The Vineyard, Little Wonder among others because “I really like that one but it only sold 12 copies at the time”, which was cool by me it's my favorite album of theirs.

Earlier in the set they did a great version of TocarThe Cold Acre, one of my favorite tracks, it is always great going seeing someone live and then they play your favorites. This Train Will be Taking No Passengers as one of the encore songs with just acoustic guitar and mouth harp kind-off like Sonny Terry's TocarTrain Whistle Blues but a bit more mellowed out and slowed down which is totally different to the verison on the record, this would have to be The Highlight of the night. I wonder what Saturday night was like? You would think they hopefully had got the sound problem fixed by then. If you went please let me know or if you seen them on the same tour it would be nice to hear what your shows were like. I couldn't get to the second night. But I think I might have to get Paul Kelly tickets just to see them again before this very long, long break thingy they're talking about.

Augie March are a wonderful live band, I've heard about shows where they totally lose it a bit and it's been made into some big deal but bands are only humans not machines, or something and when something different happens which isn't on the record you see a side of them you don't nomaliy see but then again Augie March are far from the most nomal band I ever seen. Glenn did say something about reviewers being “Fuckers”, and only waiting for the bad gigs to write about. Which Dave popped in and said something like we all love you, fuckers or reviewers out in the crowd tonight. Strange Bird and Moo, You Bloody Choir are two of my most faviorite albums of all time, and they can be one of the greatest live bands too. Go and see Augie March when they come to you town because they're a band unlike any band and Gaz and Dan are playing some songs before them at the moment too but the tour is over now so I guess you missed out.

Oh well, or should I say my favorite The Drones song is Oh My. Here's it on Triple J TV in acoustic mode too like the supporting slot on this tour.

Also here's my favorite Augie March song, It's for The Cold Acre. It's live at the Forum Theater also from Triple J TV. That's Dan Kelly on acoustic guitar too.

  • Best 10 videos like, EVER (like, in my opinion)

    Set 16 2009, 21h40 por fujikiri

I didn't copy this from nDroae, not at all.

Ok, ok, he got me inspired into making the avatar I'm wearing and then I though I could write a non-controversial journal, just for fun.

    10. - Arctic Monkeys - Crying Lightning

People @ the shoutbox: "WTF? ARE YOU MAD... BLIND?! WERE YOU HIGH WHEN YOU WATCHED THAT VIDEO? WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU? That thing is a joke, not a video, wtf? seriously, wtf?!"

Ok, ok, before you kill me for considering Crying Lightning a good video... a video, er, I want to ask the AM fans, do you remember the anticipation of this video? Do you fucking remember refreshing that bloody website were the video was supposed to be released? Do you remember jumping for a whole week when the "The Making of Crying Lightning" was posted and until the video was released? Do you remember the fucking wait? Yeah? Thank you, that is why this is here.

And besides, whenever you feel down or sad or angry the cure is: Go to youtube and watch Crying Lightning by the Arctic Monkeys, I swear to God that you will LAUGH YOUR ASS OUT. And it is an amazing song, if you don't need to cheer up you can just close your eyes (you will end up closing them anyway half through it because of the laugh)

    9.- Nightwish - The Islander

I bet people who know me from the Nightwish shoutbox are randomly surprised for this but yeah, even if I don't like Nightwish I have to admit that this is one of the best videos ever. My best friend is studying visual-arts-something and even that elitist bitch (when it comes to these things) though it was great.

And the actor who plays the old man is just the cutest grandpa ever. And the idea of the band playing around the fire is really cool. The song is not amazing or anything but it really fits the video.

I don't like the intro though, the pendulum and the sky, seems too typical now.

8.- The Last Shadow Puppets - The Age of the Understatement

I love this video because of its randomness, I don't fucking get it! BUT every random scene is pretty amazing and I love the way it sort of snaps in the face of Arctic Monkeys' fans that this band is not like them that even the style is way too different so I think it is the best beginning they could make for a new band.

I don't like the way the guys are just walking around, seems like the director ran out of imagination.

    7.- The Strokes - Reptilia

This video is so amazing in a very high level. You can actually feel the band, you can feel the song, you feel like you are part of the band and all that thanks to the way the camera captured the movements, it is so closed that when the guitar is playing there's a point where you fly really high and start thinking that you are the one playing the bloody guitar.

    I don't like... I dunno, Julian's shoes? I hate converse.

6.- The Libertines - Up the Bracket

I hate to love this video. It makes me feel angry and sad at the same time, watching the band being the band they used to be, being the fucking Libertines, it is quite sad because it makes you wonder how legendary they could had been.

And one has to love the way Pete jumps into Carl, again, makes you realize that they were friends, real friends and do the bands have to face too much? How is that life of excesses? So terrible and destructive that can actually ruin a relationship like that? I bet it is.

5.- The Vines - Get Free

Oh, come on! This song could have had a terrible video and still managed to be an amazing video at the same time. And the video is pretty cool actually, somehow Craig managed to perform like a normal person (ok, ok, I know he's sick and all, you don't need the blades).

I also like his moves, and I love the way he looks at the camera (the scene I used in my avatar) you can feel the spirit of Get Free.

    4.- Oasis - Wonderwall

I was watching this documentary of music and suddenly they started talking about Wonderwall and how it was so revolutionary and amazing and OMG. And you know what? They are bloody right! This video is one of the most amazing things in music.

And nowadays it makes me cry like a baby. The song is touchy and epic and all but the thing is, now with Noel's rant, it is like with The Libertines, I feel sad watching it, yet you can't avoid it.

    3.- Arctic Monkeys - Brianstorm

Now, some people don't like this video but I don't understand why, I can feel Brianstorm in the video, it is catchy, the ladies dance in a creative, funny way, not in a sluty or commercial, being a woman I feel aright watching them dance, it is really active, like Brianstorm, it even makes you want to dance to the song.

I also like the way the band is shown, like in the shadows, that is how the monkeys are after all, they don't like to show off.

I really love this video, it makes you smile and that is one of the things I love about music.

    2.- Placebo - For What It's Worth

God, I love this video so badly. Placebo is known for making good videos but this is the best in my opinion. It made me stay staring at the screen, I worship the labels of the people, made me almost cry.

The colours, as graphic designer I really care about colours and these are amazing, the scene of the girl that I used in my avatar is way too amazing and the colour of her skin, I love it.

A perfect video indeed. A piece of art.

1.- Queens of the Stone Age - Sick, Sick, Sick

I don't listen to non-british bands unless they are amazing or that I'm forced to, there are few exceptions, The Strokes, The Vines and We Are Scientists and Augie March.

When I learnt that Josh Homme was going to be the producer of the new Arctic Monkeys album I googled him and realized that he was in a band, in an american band. I closed the window but then I realized that this was important, that the producer, being a musician was going to be a big influence in the band. So I ate my rules and I searched on youtube "Queens of the Stone Age" and the video I first watched was Sick, Sick, Sick.

Now, I had seen that video before, years ago when it was released but of course I never paid enough attention. Yes, I loved it.

God, the video is this piece of art that makes you grin like crazy and the lady is so brilliant! She's an amazing actress. The idea is brilliant, the concept of the video and Josh's acting is hilarious.

Now I've bought 2 QOTSA records and I really love the band, one of my 5 exceptions to the rule of "only british bands" and Sick, sick, Sick is my favourite video of all time =)

0.- Especial Video. - The Beatles - Help!

This video is so epic that it can't be added to any top anything list. Perhaps the real best video ever.

Oh, yeah, please give me links to good videos =) I want to know some more.

    Note: A good video is not Beyoncé's whatever-the-name-of-the song-is-where-there-are-3-girls-dancing
