In 1979, Martin started a xeroxed fanzine called Alternative Sounds to document the Coventry music scene (including such notables as The Specials and Furious Apples ). The fanzine ran for 18 issues until 1981, and culminated in a vinyl compilation, “Sent from Coventry” (on Cherry Red Records ) and a brief appearance on the BBC’s Something Else programme. During this time, Martin met Julia at a local gig and Attrition was formed; the initial line-up included Martin’s brother Chris on guitar, who left in 1981 to join the army, and Julia’s brother Ashley Niblock (who would become another mainstay) on synthesizer.
Two early home recordings, “Fear” and “Devoid”, were issued in 1982 as a flex-disc given away with the Adventures in Reality fanzine run by Alan Rider (later of Stress and Dance Naked ), who would provide the band’s visuals for live shows. Also in 1982, Gary Levermore included an Attrition track (“The Visitor”) on the first volume of his Rising from the Red Sands series of compilation tapes, beginning a long running association with Gary and his Third Mind label (formerly Tone Death ).
In 1983, Attrition received their first exposure in the national music press through a review by Dave Henderson in his “Wild Planet” column in Sounds , which led to their “Dreamsleep” track appearing on Henderson’s compilation The Elephant Table Album , the band’s first vinyl appearance. A postal collaboration with Seattle-based improvisational collective Audio Leter led to the Action and Reaction cassette release for Adventures in Reality . Attrition’s first London concert followed, with a supporting slot from Coil , and the first European tour in april 1984 with the Legendary Pink Dots.

A review from Grave Concern: A piece of artwork! Very much like what you may find in a gallery. It's a piece. It may have several song titles on this album, pieced expertly together- displaying 25 yrs of well crafted fun. Light and dark, yin and yang, messages to make you ponder, music and bleeps and pops and wowza! You always hope that a concert on CD sounds oh so good...this is oh so terrific and engaged me so! Emile Autumn's last couple of albums are so cheesy. She does not even desrve to be compared to Attrition who are a truly original and beautiful band. .

I listened to their LTD All Mine Enemy's Whispers and I really like it. However, I also picked up on the controversy surrounding it: Emilie Autumn provided vocals and violins for one track, but she didn't finalize the release and this big thing happened between Attrition/Projekt Records and Emilie Autumn and her fangirls. I get and agree that EA has the right to be pissed from a legal standpoint, but in the end, I really have to side with Attrition musically and otherwise. It was a concept album and without that song, the concept wouldn't not have been completed and a lot of other hardwork on the album would have went to waste. It should not have been all about Emilie, Emilie, Emilie. Plus, since it was based off of a Victorian mass murderess, this was the only song featuring EA that made me remotely feel as if it was gothic Victorian, since her own music doesn't strick me as such. That's why I love the music presented by Projekt Records and why I stick with them all the way.

Strange. I was recommended Attrition by a goth friend of mine. I supposed it was gonna be darkwave/industrialm which I like. So I downloaded an album to preview. It's pure dissonance and all horror-like, reminds me of Lustmord, which I also like. So I thanked her. But it appears there's two bands named Attrition, and I found the lesser known one...

Great darkwave band. Is it me, or can I hear a snippet of Bauhaus' Three Shadows (Part II, to be exact) in Attrition's Dreamsleep? Or is that just my version of the song? I hear the end part of Three Shadows Part 2, "riddle my" (closed bloated breasts) in the first few seconds.
