Ok, I'm a bit bored again (this is definitely the best fuel for journals for me...) so I'll have a go on criticizing my 20 top artists. (with stoppage from incorrect tags)
Now added the “For likers of” section. Consider recommended if you like one or more of the items there!
25 Edguy - I actually only like a few songs from them... the newer, the better. They turned on a less boring and more fun style of music recently. Some argue that it's not metal, but what matters is the music, not the name.
Good: The funnier songs
Bad: The double bass ones
For likers of: Telling jokes and having sex, but being romantic.
24 Place Vendome - Oh so good! I wouldn't expect this from such lineup, but they can sound pretty happy and positive, which is good. Kiske decided to carry on a new way, and I'd say that was a pretty straightforward and correct decision to make.
Good: Positive!
Bad: Gets boring fairly quickly.
For likers of: Not losing time, dreaming of flying and walking around.
23 30 Seconds to Mars - Though they sound pretty emo/cliché at times, they can be pretty good too. It's fun when they sound spacial/atmospheric. My absolute favourite is
From Yesterday though.
Good: More epic and beautiful than usual emo.
Bad:
When it's like usual emo.
For likers of: Hair straightener, feeling music as opposed to dancing it.
2x My own tracks :p nevermind the pollution...
20 Viper - Yay for Andre Matos! He rocked ever since he was a little child. They have pretty beautiful songs and some that rock even today leaving all the clichés and stuff behind. Too bad the Passarell brothers weren't up to the level (though they made the best songs!). Andre then parted ways with them seeking a more intricate style of music and running into Angra. Good.
Good: Andre Matooos <3 and the lyrics are fairly more straightforward than those from Angra.
Bad: a few songs are boring, with poor guitar work.
For likers of: Headbanging, shouting and nostalgia.
19 The Beatles - Yay! I don't need to explain why they rock. John Lennon had incredible melodic sense and I sometimes wonder if he had such knowledge of classical music theory as to write all that their songs have (the orchestral passages and so on), because I know Paul didn't. I know I should know this, but could anyone tell me if they had an arranger? :p well anyway, every single one of their songs sounds incredible and all of them have splendid voices (Lennon specially <3). Only artist to ever score an 11 out of 10 for me.
Good: Intricate but not stupid.
Bad: ?
For likers of: Parents, peace and black and white photography.
18 Artista desconhecido :P
17 Intérprete desconhecido - ... ok, two artists of stoppage.
16 Lawrence Hall - Huh? This guy is a fellow composer whose 1-minute song was played waay too much here. Not bad, but I wouldn't say this deserves criticism xD that makes up to three artists of stoppage....
15 Goldfinger - I really can't define
ska punk as a genre well enough, but this band definitely mastered it. You just can't play Tony Hawk and not fall in love with their songs. Then you find out more about them and discover they are pretty good and innovative too. Score!
Good: Innovative! And great lyrics too.
Bad: Hard to find :p they so should be known better!
For likers of: Partying, living in the United States and hanging out with the dudes.
14 Naast - Yes! France rocks too! And pretty good! I wish everyone today knew well like these dudes that you don't need heavy distortion to rock hard. Old school? They're better than that.
Good: Energetic. Come on, is it the only French-singing rock band?
Bad: Could innovate a
little bit more...
For likers of: Jumping, speaking loudly and Amelie Pouláin.
13 Elvenking - These guys sound pretty good, they've achieved an unequaled mix of folk and metal. Do you know how it sucks when one artist is so unique that when you listen to all of their songs you feel the need for more but can't feed it? ...yeah.
Good: The folkier, acoustic songs and or just less noisy. Some have pretty well-themed lyrics too.
Bad: The repetitive chorused vocals and boring harmonies that sometimes come up.
For likers of: Mythology, tradition and folklore.
12 Pain of Salvation - Scary. There is no little reason why everyone praises Daniel Gildenlöw like a god. It seems he can make his music sound like whatever he wants. He has a potential and is not afraid to use it. Want an orchestral movie score? Call Gildenlöw! Want a heavy metal song? Call him! Want a medieval tune for your new novel? Guess who? ...I'm glad he's not the only composer on Earth. And by far not the best in all the styles he does too.
Good: The variety.
Bad: The repetitiveness in some songs.
For likers of: Suffering, terror movies and philosophy.
11 Rise Against - This is the noisy and loud part of my music. I wish I was enough a man to sing like Mr. Tim :P I don't want to risk my throat.
Good: The delicious vocals that don't sound a bit emo.
Bad: Lyrics could be a little more impressive.
For likers of: Running, freedom of speech and arguing.
10 Porcupine Tree - Pretty good, these fellows. They sound overall dark and mean (and heavy) even on the lyrics. Ironically, what I like best from them is when they are light and happier. If
Oasis used guitars better, they would be like Porcupine Tree.
Good: When it's more rock and less metal.
Bad: Those depressive harmonies that make no sense and make you want to sleep.
For likers of: whining about the past, Baudelaire and NASA.
9 L'Arc~en~Ciel - ...impressive. Impressive. Impressive! It is the MOST UNFAIR that only jap freaks know these guys. They are definitely one of the best rock groups out there on the globe, their songs can be pretty much anything; from steady to calm, but always innovative. Thought you couldn't rock beautifully and not emo these days? Ha! Think again.
Good: Melody, variety, energy.
Bad: Hyde is too hot. If only he didn't know that, he wouldn't try to look so badass. A smile on stage would be pretty welcome.
For likers of: Make-up, travelling and having fun.
8 - See #4 :p damn wrong tags.
7 O Teatro Mágico - Another one the World should know. They are a perfect example of good Brazilian music, poetry and art in general. What they have done with music is unparallelled (though inspired and similar to many kinds of practice through history) and seeing them live makes you pity other groups forever after. Beside all that, they have done one of the most beautiful pieces ever, this
22-11 marvel.
Good: Unpretentious poetry.
Bad: Pretentious poetry. Some songs could be SO MUCH better too.
For likers of: Coffee, poetry, circus and free stuff.
6 Blind Guardian - They are so unique! Being tagged
power metal has become an insult to me, making sure whatever lies inside is no more than semiquaver double bass pollution (specifically, at 160~180BPM). Blind Guardian is pretty good at escaping that, plus they have some surprising songs. Seeing them live was like a dream coming true.
Good: Not your default power metal. The more alternative songs are the best.
Bad: When they are stuck in the same double bass pattern for the whole song. (yes, that happens at times)
For likers of: RPG, romantism and the Lord of the Rings.
5 The Faulty - Most. Underrated. Band. Ever. (well maybe just unknown) It just completely SUCKS that a group of punks that do music so absolutely different from everything that's ever existed like this dies out after a single album released. I would pay loads to see them live.
Good: Nothing else in the World compares.
Bad: Having SIX SONGS! FOR GOD'S SAKE!
For likers of: Saying ‘yeah’, rain and riots.
4 A.C.T - Surprising, too. Their music can at times be so intricate it almost makes no sense. They've achieved an almost perfect mix of pop and alternative music on some pieces. Some of their songs are INSANE (namely, Wailings from a Building, Torn by a Phrase, Call in Dead, The Final Silence), and they almost don't have a single song that utterly sucks.
Good: Guitars that don't take the music over.
Bad: Songs that sound excessively gay and even with all the innovation, become pretty predictable.
For likers of: Synapse jumps, jokes, 80’s and tolerance.
3 Green Day - Still my favourite band (maybe pairing up with Angra). Dookie is awesome, and they haven't really lost it in the following albums - they went for some different style, which is actually to my liking too. I find their lyrics, art concepts and general ideas pretty interesting. There's more to it than a bunch of stoned punks with no life.
Good: The more emotional (Dookie) or innovative (Nimrod, Warning) songs.
Bad: Some boring songs (Insomniac contains most of them).
For likers of: Being young, singing along and growing up but refusing to admit.
2 soundTeMP - Did the soundtrack for Ragnarök Online. My GOD! They are absolutely fantastic! Their music is just so full of detail and melody, they can do absolutely anything they want with music, from heavy rock to classical stuff. And not many people on this Earth can get as high as that.
Good: Covers a wide set of genres, and does all of them masterfully.
Bad: They are in Korea! :'( do I have to move there to apply for a job?
For likers of: details, soundtracks, gaming and being picky.
1 Angra - Can do some unbelievable stuff. I think they have shown Brazil around the best way it could have been done. Andre Matos is a fabulous vocalist, and Edu isn't bad either, though he seems to be on not too good shape recently. I hope he gets over it.
Good: UNBELIEVABLE songs.
Bad: Aurora Consurgens x_x'
For likers of: Emotion, eruditeness and using the vocative ‘man’.
