  • ECM :rarum Series of Selected Recordings

    Fev 17 2009, 23h01 por colmenares

ecm stands for edition of contemporary music, and it's a label based out of munich, germany. their back catalogue spans as far back as 1969 with the release of free at last by pianist Mal Waldron, and even though it's mostly known for releasing jazz recordings, it has also released music from the likes of Steve Reich or Philip Glass. on this post we will focus on their rather interesting series called: :rarum, selected recordings.

the series is focused on allowing the featured artist to create a selection of their own recordings, either as a frontman or sideman. this is done solely to emphasize the input of the artist rather than that of label excecs, and in turn create a more introspective selection of tunes. as an additive, the label has remastered all the tracks to 24 bit. if that wasn't enough, the inserts include rare photography, as well as extended biographies and artist notes.

up to date there are 20 editions of the series, all of which are offered through the ecm shop

here's a list of what's out there so far:

    :rarum I Keith Jarrett
    :rarum II Jan Garbarek
    :rarum III Chick Corea
    :rarum IV Gary Burton
    :rarum V Bill Frisell
:rarum VI Art Ensemble of Chicago
    :rarum VII Terje Rypdal
    :rarum VIII Bobo Stenson
    :rarum IX Pat Metheny
    :rarum X Dave Holland
    :rarum XI Egberto Gismonti
    :rarum XII Jack DeJohnette
    :rarum XIII John Surman
    :rarum XIV John Abercrombie
    :rarum XV Carla Bley
    :rarum XVI Paul Motian
    :rarum XVII Tomasz Stanko
    :rarum XVIII Eberhard Weber
    :rarum XIX Arild Andersen
    :rarum XX Jon Christensen

we certainly hope ecm doesn't stop there!!

    19. Loosers – The Natives Are Restless (2LP, Qbico)
    20. Crystal Stilts – Crystal Stilts (LP, Woodsist)

Of course there have been a lot more cool records, but fort his time I wanted to keep the list short. The music listed above is (apart from some other records not mentioned, the latest Sic Alps for example) what I really enjoyed most this year.

Favorite Concerts 2008 (In Order of Attendance)

Pere Ubu (Studio, Mousonturm, Frankfurt a. M., 18. Februar 2008)
David Thomas got pretty drunk on red wine and walked off stage once in a while to have a smoke backstage. When on stage he performed in a superb way: joking around with the band and the audience and leading through a highly entertaining set that covered his whole career from the early pre-Pere Ubu days to his solo-works and up to the new Pere Ubu stuff. Excellent gig.

Tom Carter, GHQ, Zaika (Kulturbunker Mühlheim, 13. März 2008)
We drove to Mühlheim and ended up with like 12 people in a venue where at least 300 people might fit into. (Later in the year at a show with LSD March, Ignatz and Our Brother The Native it would be like 20 people!) After three brilliant sets we ended up on the patio at night having a beer (maybe more than one beer) with Marcia Bassett & her fellow travellers.

Marissa Nadler (Unrock-Instore Gig, Krefeld, 29. März 2008)
Marissa Nadler performed a breathtaking Instore Gig singing and playing guitar without any microphones! A very intimate show in this cosy record shop. Unforgettable!

Hakon Kornstad (Moers Festival, Moers, 10. Mai 2008)
Amazing solo performance in a church during Moers Festival. Kornstad played saxophone and flutonette (clarinette with a flute mouthpiece) and whilst playing little bits he recorded and looped them simultaneously to accompany himself.

MV/EE & The Golden Road (Unrock Instore Gig, Krefeld, 17. Mai 2008)
Another Instore Gig, but this was a special one! The Brattleboro Two in Krefeld (and Samara Lubelski and Doc Dunn with them)! Of course they played an amazing show and everybody had a good time listening to their space-jams and folky tunes.

Sunburned Hand Of The Man (Unrock Instore Gig, Krefeld, 05. Juli 2008)
This time we found ourselves encircled and sitting on the floor whilst listening to the quadrophonic improvisation Sunburned Hand Of The Man layed upon us. Cool Show and some cold beers afterwards! A perfect evening!

Max Müller (KUZ, Mainz, 22. September)

Sic Alps, Titmachine (Kulturrampe, Krefeld, 12. Oktober 2008)
Titmachine played „Sex Beat“, „I wanna be your dog“ and some other songs in their very own charming not-so-professional-style. Everybody in the room liked it immediately. Afterwards the Sic Alps played a loud and tight but loose set. Very noisy and the set ended with my personal favorite: „Message From The Law“. As you already know, their Byrds-meets-early-Sonic Youth-Style is pretty cool.

    Paul Metzger (Stadtgarten, Köln, 27.10.2008)
Another show with nearly no audience. About 20 people attending an awesome improvisational set played by Metzger on his modified banjo. It was amazing to watch Metzger use his instrument in so many different ways.

Festival, Greg Weeks (Private Acoustic Show In A Living Room In Frankfurt a. M., 13.11.2008)
Something special, again. Laurent usually does those living room shows at his place, but this time it all happened at a flat nearby... Greg Weeks and his fellow travellers Festival needed a place to rest on their way from Sweden to Switzerland and that’s why they came to eat and sleep and play in Frankfurt. After sitting in the kitchen together having some cheese and bread and wine and chatting a bit about this and that we all took a seat in the living room where Festival and then Greg Weeks (and a girl whose name I don’t remember) played some acoustic songs.

Acid Mothers Temple (Oetinger Villa, Darmstadt, 20.11.2008)
    Mindblowing set.

James Blackshaw (Unrock Instore Gig, 03. Dezember 2008)
A perfect day and a drunken night! After spending the afternoon with James (buying second hand records, talking about music and movies and other things and having a few beers) we got back to Unrock where lots of friends had arrived. Drinking and smoking we stood in front of the shop waiting for James to be ready to perform – and, of course, he played a gorgeous set. Some old songs (some even older) and some pretty new ones from his forthcoming album (he finished recording a few days before he came to Germany). Afterwards we said goodbye to James and got off to Duisburg where some really funny things happened... at the end of a long night we ended up in Markus’ flat having some last beers and sank deep into sleep at 6 in the morning. Perfect!

  • Dirty Three RAGE guest programmers + curated ATP festival too!!!

    Out 7 2008, 13h51 por BlackCoffeeDuck

On the 19th August 2006 Dirty Three guest programmed RAGE. Dirty Three is my favourite band. And RAGE is a late night Aussie TV show which invites bands or artists to pick favourite songs or video clips or the video clips of their favourite songs. At this time it was Dirty Three’s last full Aussie tour for the new album Cinder which was a year old anyway. So writing now means it has been almost five years since a new Dirty Three album. At the moment bands like Portishead and The Drones are my favourite bands but off course both have pulled out new albums this year. Portishead took ten years for Third but it is one of the greatest albums ever. But I hope Dirty Three don’t take that long for a new album.

Warren Ellis has joined Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and started a new band with Nick Cave called Grinderman. Jim White is playing for Cat Power, PJ Harvey, Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, Beth Orton, Nina Nastasia so he’s a drummer for hire for anyone he wants to play for. Mick Turner has been the quietest but has had solo albums and painting exhibitions. Dirty Three have played together a few times but these shows are getting less and less. Since this tour they have done Chinese tour, curated the ATP festival in England and played festival shows in France, Spain, Australia and the last one being The End of the Road festival in England. So there haven’t broke up but just haven’t done anything new for a long time. Anyone who has not seen the Dirty Three DVD which came out last year should check it out because it’s the closest to a new album and one of the greatest music docos and live show double DVD ever.

Anyway here what Dirty Three picked that night -
    Nina Simone - TocarRevolution
    Erykah Badu - Tyrone
Ol' Dirty Bastard - I Got Your Money
    Cat Power - Living Proof
    Deerhoof - Wrong Time Capsule

    Jimmy Cliff - Reggae Night
Bob Dylan - Things Have Changed
    The Who - Can't Explain
The Birthday Party - Release the Bats
    Einsturzende Neubauten - Halber Mensch

Well what happens next is RAGE plays all of the Dirty Three video clips which you don’t really get to see that often. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds videos follow that night too. If anyone knows what the Dirty Three are up to now please let me know. I hope you enjoy this as much as I did.

+ about six months later Dirty Three picked all Artists and Bands At:

  • Des Peres house of POW

    Mar 27 2008, 1h25 por desperes

Let me introduce to you the house of PoW
I don't really need to say more, as the phrase itself combined with your more than adequate imaginations should be sufficient I'm sure, but the rules of writing require that I do.
The House of PoW is a house full of stolen bits and it might fall down at any minute but for some science defying reason, it never does. Rather it continues to operate as a high powered pleasure provider for young men and women in this crazy old mystical mass we refer to as THE WORLD.
In its backyard there is a picnic on a stupendous scale, where the participants are young and beautiful and eat an endless supply of donuts, cakes and chicken pies. Whose daily programme of events consist of everything and anything from darts, to champagne swimming, to camel races, to hunting the great lion of Africa, to dubbing out under a banana tree, to climbing the technological hights, to cat burglary, to reading of mighty literature, to converstions with to many implications. There will be green spectacles and umbrellas, veils for Egypt and rough clothing for the pilgrimising in the holy land, Dark coats for Paris and saddles for Syria.
    Light musical instruments are encouraged.
It consists of all the great and bad houses you have lived in seen or read about and none of them at the same time. The gingerbread house, something from Frank Lloyd – Wright, Coltranes House, Parliaments House, William Burroughs House, Iannis Xenakis' House, The Art Ensemble of Chicago's House, Miles Davis' House, Prince's house, Buckingham Palace and The hanging garden of Babylon, and Talking Heads House, the house that was built on the rock as well as the one that fell done on the sand and every other house not mentioned that held people together.
What was there lacking about that programme to make it perfectly irresistible? Nothing that any finite mind could discover.
It was and is the House of POW and it is Irresistible

The recording of Des Peres' House of PoW is due for release in 2008John ColtraneParliamentArt Ensemble of ChicagoTalking Headsdes peres
