starting off the list we have a guy who has lots of bands (many of them involve pretty girls, actually come to think of it almost all of them do). he is totally a player, and his name is quite fun to say (although im not sure im pronouncing it correctly). thats right everybody, we have, arjen anthony lucassen.

Arjen Anthony Lucassen zwykł zapraszać do siebie różnych, osławionych muzyków do swoich wydawnictw. Na 01011001 (tytuł zamieniony na system binarny oznacza 89, co w ASCII oznacza Y - jest to nazwa planety o której opowiada płyta) jest 17 wokalistów. W tym m.in. Hansi Kürsch (Blind Guardian), Daniel Gildenlöw (Pain of Salvation), Jonas Renkse (Katatonia) czy Tom S. Englund (Evergrey). Są też instrumentaliści z innych, sławnych grup muzycznych. Trzeba przyznać, że skład robi wrażenie.

De laatste dagen ben ik (en precies de rest van de wereld ook) zo verkocht aan de muziek van Ayreon. Toen in 2004 "The Human Equation" uitkwam, was er net zoals nu een heisa rond Arjen Anthony Lucassen. Al die aandacht schoot bij mij in het verkeerde keelgat, ik gaf het album een kans, maar na 1 luisterbeurt had ik genoeg van die “prul”. Ik voelde niets, totaal niets. Gaf mij maar Hansi of die zanger van Sonata Arctica, Tony. Ondertussen zijn we 4 jaar verder. Ons leven is geëvolueerd, onze muzieksmaak veranderd en ons idee van “veel aandacht is niet goed” is opgeruimd voor “ik zal zelf wel oordelen wat ik van 01011001vind”.

Age of Shadowsis het eerste nummer en tevens ook het langste nummer van de eerste cd. Het begint vrij elektrisch/spacey, wat we wel verwacht hadden na het zien van de titel. Het is Jonas Renkske van Katatonia & Floor Janssens(After Forever) met hun hemelse stemmen die na 5 minuten het nummer wat afbouwen. Anneke van Giersbergen(ex-The Gathering) zorgt op de achtergrond voor de “01101000”. We krijgen een heerlijk samenspel te horen. Uiteindelijk verliest het nummer wat van zijn kracht/magie, maar gelukkig worden me na 9 minuten wakker geschud door Hansi Kürsch(Blind Guardian) en Floor. En ja hoor, daar is onze Jorn weer te horen. Wat heeft die man een kracht in zijn stem. Het hele geheel moet ik een 8/10 geven.

Het tweede nummer van dit album is Comatose. Wat een eerste keer als “saai” wordt bestempeld, verandert de 2de en 3de keer in: subliem. Wat een kippevel-nummer. Het nummer pakt op één of andere reden je ziel vast en vliegt er in pijlsnelle vlucht mee naar Ierland. Ook al speelt Anneke hier een belangrijke rol, het is toch Jorn die dit nummer naar zijn hand zet. Ik krijg niet genoeg van dit nummer. Ik ben eraan verslaafd. Je kan pas van muziek spreken als je dit nummer hebt gehoord! We moeten wel toegeven dat de lyrics niet veel voorstellen, maar dat vergeef ik Arjen volledig. Dit nummer is subliem. Meer dan 10 kan je niet geven zekers? Damn! S-U-B-L-I-E-M.

Liquid Eternity is een nummer dat redelijk zwak begint, maar dat is misschien de bedoeling na die klapper van Comatose. Je moet nog even bekomen... Het is pas aan het refrein dat we wakker worden geschud. Floor Janssens en Jorn zijn hier de oorzaak van. Voor mij is de “would you prefer…” één van de beste stukken in dit nummer gevolgd door “I’m losing my reason to live, the essence of life”. Na 3’29” worden we getrakteerd op een lekker muzikaal stuk dat je al vrij snel kan meefluiten. Het is engelenmuziek dat onze ziel naar de hemel brengt. Alsof we al dood zijn…na 20’ komt er nog een heerlijke dwarsfluit bij. Je bent echt weg van deze wereld. De viool zorgt voor dat kippenvel moment. Dit nummer zorgt voor emotie. Jorn doet daar samen met Floor nog een schepje bovenop…. Het refrein breekt dit fragiele moment, maar het nummer blijft in stijgende lijn evolueren. Een ijzersterk evoluerend nummer waar Jorn en Floor alle eer toegeschreven krijgen. Een dikke 8.5/10

Het vierde nummer op de eerste cd is Connect the Dots.Het nummer begint met het startgeluid van een auto aangevuld met een Egyptisch deuntje. Ty Tabor van King’s X zorgt met zijn stem voor dat spacey gevoel. In het begin is dat zeer verfrissend, maar na het refrein wordt dat gewoon saai. Hij is de hoofdrolspeler in dit nummer, maar hij vervult zijn taak niet voor de volle 100%. Daarbovenop zijn de lyrics niet van hoogstaand niveau. Op 2’48” krijgt het nummer toch nog een andere wending, maar tegen dan zijn we al lang in slaap gevallen, jammer! Een skip-nummer dat net niet gebuisd is: 5.5/10

Beneath the Waves is het nummer met een zeer slecht begin. Gelukkig komen er redelijk veel zanger(ressen)s aan bod. Daniel Gildenlöw van Pain of Salvation kan me in het begin van dit nummer niet volledig meenemen. Gelukkig komt hier (snel) [2’15”] een einde aan en zorgt een vrouw (wie?) met haar fragiele stem voor een ander sfeertje. Dit nummer is geniaal. Hoe meer je er naar luistert, hoe beter het wordt. Wat zal dat geven als ik dat 100 keer beluister? De lyrics zijn herhalend, maar dat doet het nummer juist beter tot zijn recht komen. Robert Soeterboek (Wicked Sensation) komt nog even op dit nummer piepen met zijn diepe, zéér sexy stem (nog nooit van die man gehoord, wat een zonde! Wat een stem!!) Een paar tellen later voegt Jorn zich toe. De spanning is te snijden en op 4’20” breekt de bom los. Hij brengt het nummer naar een ander niveau. Hansi zorgt voor dat tikkeltje extra magie, hij brengt ons tot de climax van het lied die Jorn eigenhandig in beweging heeft gezet. Een tweede climax wordt ons bezorgt op 6’33” wanneer Jorn en een vrouw (?) een heerlijk duetje zingen. Dit is kippenvel maal factor 10. Kunnen we ons hiertegen beschermen? Soit ik geef het nummer een 9/10 omdat ik niet van in het begin met het liedje mee ben.

Na 2 ietwat rustigere nummers krijgen we dit heerlijke Newborn Race voorgeschoteld. Het is Daniel die met dit fris nummertje opent. Het verbaasde me dat hij het was aangezien ik hem op beneath the waves bijna helemaal afkeur. Een vrouw op de achtergrond zorgt voor dat ontzettend fris melodietje dat je niet uit je hoofd krijgt. Ook Bob Catley krijgt op 3’40” een kleine rol. Maar het zijn toch Hansi en Jorn die dit nummer naar hun hand zetten. Het nummer krijgt zelfs een “Fly”-gevoel. Jorn Lande die direct Hansi bijstaat zorgt voor een hoogtepunt! (alweer). Daarna [6’13”] volgt een gewoon geweldig stuk dat het hele nummer omhoog trekt, maar Jorn neemt toch weer de overhand. 9/10. Op de achtergrond horen we nog Floor Janssens.

Nu dat we in de juist stemming zitten zorgt Ride the Comet voor de ideale vervolging. Het is ondertussen al het 7de nummertje van de eerste cd en tevens ook direct één van mijn favorieten. Het nummer begint met een heerlijk spacey begin en wordt direct versterkt door een lekkere drum en gitaarriff. Het is Robert Soeterboek die weer van zich laat horen en de show in dit nummer steelt. De engelenstem van Floor Janssens is iets dat in dit nummer niet kan ontbreken en dat je dan ook niet meer uit je hoofd krijgt. Na 1’15” krijgt het nummer een andere wending door een zekere Magali Luyten. Het heeft me enige tijd gekost vooraleer ik dit besefte. Ik zocht de hele tijd naar een mannenstem, maar wat viel me dat tegen toen ik een vrouw zag zingen op de release party van het album (via youtube). Engelenstem? Dat is toch sarcastisch hoop ik? Soit, dat mens kan wel zingen! Chapeau! De ommekeer is in het begin wat onwennig, maar na een tijd kan je dit deel gewoon niet meer missen. Dit nummer krijgt van mij een 9,5/10 en Robert Soeterboek mag direct met mij trouwen!

Web of Lies is het laatste nummer van de eerste cd en tevens mijn eerste ‘bewuste’ kennismaking met Ayreon. Ik moet toegeven dat ik direct verkocht was, ik heb dan ook een lichte zwak voor violen, dwarsfluiten en ballades. Simone Simons van Epica is niet direct mij favoriete zangeres, maar mijn mening is lichtjes veranderd door het laatste album van Epica en daardoor kan ik haar nu wel aanhoren. Phideaux Xavier van Phideaux neemt de mannelijke rol op in dit duet en dat doet hij voortreffelijk. De lyrics zijn grappig. Voorbeeld: “I've seen your pics, you're looking great. I'm all alone, dying for a date. I think we match, it must be fate”. Het nummer is vrij catchy en kan na 3 keer perfect worden meegezongen. Na een paar luisterbeurten verliest het nummer wel haar magie met het gevolg dat we het een 7/10 moeten geven.

The Fifth Extinction is het eerste nummer van de tweede cd en kan je vergelijken met de opener The age of shadows. Het nummer is opgedeeld in verschillende secties. Het is nu de eer aan Anneke van Giersbergen om het lied te openen. Al vrij snel voegt Bob zich bij de groep toe. Steve lee en Jorn lande laten niet lang op zich wachten. In de sectie World of Tomorrow Dreams horen we Tom Englund, Steve Lee, Daniel Gildenlow & Jorn Lande. Maar het is toch Hansi die hier alle aandacht verdient en voor 1 keer niet Jorn lande! Hierop volgt een solo van Derek Sherinian. Na 8 minuten (ondertussen zitten we in het deel From The Ashes worden we getrakteerd op viool-muziek door de heer Ben Mathot - wil je een date met mij? - Je moet toegeven dat dit met passie ingespeeld is!! (jaja, ik als ex-cello muzikant begrijp dat). En wat nu volgt is onbeschrijfelijk!! Geen enkele zanger trekt dit stuk naar zich toe. Het is het samenspel dat voor een onzettend magie-gevoel zorg!! Voor mij persoonlijk het ultieme hoogtepunt van het hele album. We krijgen een mini-duet tussen Tom Englund & Jonas Renske, Daniel Gildenlow & Bab Catley, Steve lee & Hansi Kursch en uiteindelijk nog Floor Jansen & Jorn lande. Voor mij persoonlijk maken hier Bob Catley, Steve lee, Hansi Kursch de meeste indruk op mij!! Uiteindelijk is het Daniel die het hele liedje (sectie Glimmer Of Hope Reprise) mag afsluiten en dat doet hij voortreffelijk. Je hebt al direct zin om hierna te applaudisseren, recht te staan, te schreeuwen en te wachten voor het bis-nummer. Dit verdient een 9/10.

Als ondertussen Waking Dreams al begonnen is, zijn we nog aan het bekomen van ons hoogtepunt. Wanneer ondertussen Jonas & Anneke zijn gepasseerd worden we terug wakker. Hebben we iets gemist? Nee. Het is een vrij zwak nummer dat me niet kan bekoren, totaal niet. Het is traag, er zit geen fatsoenlijke melodie in en de zangers zorgen niet voor een hoogtepunt. Jammer. Zelfs de keyboard-solo van Tomas Bodin en de gitaarsolo van Mister Arjen himself kan ons niet wakker schudden. Dit is een nachtmerrie: een 4/10! Skip die super saaie boel, damn.

Gelukkig volgt al vrij ‘snel’ The Truth Is in Here. Dit vrolijk deuntje heelt de pijn een beetje. Het is Arjen zelf die me verrast met zijn stem. Liselotte Hegt van Dial is op de achtergrond te horen. Na 3 minuten treedt mevrouw Hegt op de voorgrond, maar die rol is niet voor lang voor haar weggelegd. Dit rustig en simpel nummertje dat je vrij snel kan meefluiten krijgt van mij een 8/10, maar na het verschrikkelijke "waking dreams" verliest het haar charme en moet ik het een 7/10 geven.

Unnatuoral selection is alweer het 4de nummer van de 2de cd. Het is alweer een nummer dat ik niet volledig “voel”. De verschrikkelijke diepe riff irriteert me en past totaal niet in het plaatje. Er heerst voor de tweede keer een zonverduistering op het album. Gelukkig zorgt Steve Lee met zijn stem voor een sprankeltje zon. Jorn zorgt dat de wolken definitief verdwijnen. Hansi Kursch is ergens ver ver ver te horen tijdens de riffs. Miljaar, een 5/10 krijgt dit maar hoor.

En dan volgt het bloedmooie River of Time. Je hebt direct al zin om mee te dansen met het heerlijk rustig (begin)folk deuntje dat je geest naar Ierland brengt. Na bijna 1 minuut zorgt de stroomversnelling dat je Ierland vanuit de lucht ziet. En ja hoor, als je iets duidelijker kijkt, zie je kasteelheer Hansi van Blind Guardian. Hij wordt versterkt door Roberto. Op 1’21” krijgen de 2 heren de hoofdrol in het sprookje. Hansi behoudt in dit nummer zijn identiteit (stijl), wat ik persoonlijk belangrijk vind. Niets geacteerd, puur natuur. Vanaf 2’35” worden we getrakteerd op een heerlijk muzikaal stuk. Het nummer beweegt je ziel, het maakt je vrij. Voor 1 keer bij dit album gaan we terug in de tijd, naar de Middeleeuwen weliswaar! Een verdiende 10/10.

E=mc² is dat nummer dat weer voor dat heerlijk gevoel zorgt. Het heeft wel een paar luisterbeurten nodig. Maar het nummer is niet saai of heeft geen diep riffs, nee is het gewoon een lekker nummer waar Wudstik voor zorgt. Geen metalman, maar who cares? Hij past perfect in het plaatje. Marjan Welman van Elister zorgt voor de vrouwelijke noot en verrast me met haar “and do what no one has dared”. Dit verdient een 8/10. Die Wudstik zelfs een 9/10.

The Sixth Extinctionbrengt ons naar het einde van dit album. Sectie Radioactive Gravezorgt voor dat leuk effect waar we een deel van de zangers afwisselend horen. In de 3de sectie (sectie 2085) horen we de heerlijke stemmen van Jonas Renkske, Bob Catley & Steve Lee die ondersteund worden door de cellist die tevens voor het bombastische geluid zorgt (nog veel beter te horen op 8’31” – gecombineerd nu met viool). Complete the Circle is het ultieme einde van het hele album waar het merendeel van de zangers nog een laatste kreet laat horen. Het is Jorn lande (correctie: Steve Lee) die het geheel mag afsluiten. Dat verdient hij wel. 8/10 krijgt dit laatste nummer van de cd.


Algemeen beeld van de cd is dat het een geweldige cd is. Ik had nog nooit echt 'fatsoenlijk' geluisterd naar Ayreon, dus ik kan ook geen vergelijkingen maken met dit is een minder album etc. Ik ben zéér blij dat ik kennis heb gemaakt met dit heerlijk album. Voor mij stelen vooral Steve Lee, Jorn Lande, Robert Soeterboek & Hansi de show en heb ik een positieve kennismaking gehad met Ty Tabor & Wudstik.
Het totale resultaat van dit album is: 78%.

Laten we hopen dat er niet te veel fouten in staan, maar zeg nu zelf, die mannenstemmen trekken soms enorm op elkaar. And NO i am not gonna write this in English!

Ayreon's 7th album is something rather special to me, as it is the first album by this project that I got to anticipate since my discovery. We all know the great feeling we get when discovering new music by artists that are still recording, and the rush of excitement when a new album is on the horizon. Having discovered Ayreon's "The Human Equation" in 2004 due to several of my favorite singers being featured on it (Mikael Akerfeldt, James LaBrie, Devin Townsend.) I discovered it to be almost nothing like I expected and at the end of the year crowned it the finest release of that year. Release of the year is something I only give to the finest albums (since then I've given it to Opeth's Ghost Reveries, Iron Maiden's A Matter Of Life And Death and Dream Theater's Systematic Chaos.) and my journey into Ayreon's back catalogue was exciting, and I discovered I had to have everything. Not just Ayreon but Star One, Stream Of Passion, Ambeon and anything else connected with Arjen Anthony Lucassen.

With 01011001 (translated from Binary as "Y") Ayreon manages to weave a tapestry though all previous albums. At it's heart it's a prequel to "The Dream Sequencer" but when all seven albums are put together, you could easily create a timeline of the Ayreon universe, as every story cumulates in the story of 01011001, even Actual Fantasy has a song that takes place sometime after this album but before Dream Sequencer.

In the story, we are taken to the planet Y (previously mentioned as a landmark on the colonists journey in "Flight Of The Migrator") where an amphibeous race known as The Forever have become so technologically advanced that they have become immortal, conquering mortality. However unrest breaks out as many Forever lament the loss of mortality. The first disc has a lot of arguing back and forth about the merits and drawbacks of their immortality. To wit: they've lost emotion and long for it's return. A group of Forever (the principal cast) band together for differing reasons and hitch a ride on a comet to find a planet where they could create life and rediscover what they've lost.

They eventually come to Earth, where they make the decision, however heavy hearted, to destroy the current dominent life forms, the dinosaurs (I guess it wasn't a child's lost meteor.) Mankind evolves with help from these "Extremophiles" however they become warlike and quickly are speeding towards extinction. The Forever attempt to rectify this, but their problem solving skills are limited to throwing more technology and faster evolution at every problem and they only aggravate the issue. An attempt is made to send back visions of the apocalypse into the 5th century but this fails (due to a certain "argus eyed" wizard.) In the year 2084 mankind is annihilated in a global conflict, the remaining survivors retreating to mars and various space stations, the earth now being uninhabitable. The Forever give the remaining humans one last nudge and the dream sequencer is created, where the last man will become the Universal Migrator and repopulate the galaxy. The entire story is punctuated with small interludes showcasing various men and women, including one very interesting song that Arjen himself sings, where he plays a mental patient plagued by dreams that he is various characters throughout the Ayreon mythos.

One could easy try and dissect the plot to say that Arjen Anthony Lucassen is a bit of a luddite and fears technology, thinks mankind is on the fast track to ruin and is trying to send a mission. However so draped in lush science fiction scenery I can't help but believe that it's nothing more or less than a great story, told for our entertainment and to flesh out the music.

And the music, is a bit of what you'd expect from Ayreon but also a bit more. The opening track "The Age Of Shadows" starts up with an industiral sounding heavy intro that segues into a thrashy metal riff. New ground is broken as Ayreon goes darker and more heavy than they've ever been, but that's not to say that the tried and true folkish prog-rock isn't present, on songs such as "Web Of Lies" and "The Truth Is Here" you can't help but smile with the familiarity of it all. Quotes from previous albums are present, which make sense due to the story borrowing elements from each album. I even got a Star One vibe on the blistering "Ride The Comet"

The principal cast is one of the best yet, with the hauntingly emotive voice of Jonas Renske perhaps stealing the show a bit (and giving us a taste of his metal growl for the first time in over a decade.) Jonas seems to play the same sort of musical role that Mikael Akerfeldt did on "The Human Equation" although this is unsurprisng, as they are somewhat contemporaries of each other, though I can happily proclaim that even though he's not used as often as I like, Jonas Renske isn't as underused as Akerfeldt was. I felt that Hansi Kursh didn't have enough leads, but it only served to punctuate the few times his character did sing solo, he sounds a lot more confident and focused on this album than on the dreadful "A Twist In The Myth" that Blind Guardian released last year.

Daniel Gildenlow is definitely not a favorite of mine, but manages to be servicable in his role, despite being a bit all over the map. Perhaps the most impressive performance however, is the soulfully wondeful Jorn Lande, who shows a spectacular range and amazing power. Ty Tabor and Arjen Lucassen also impress with their own small roles, injecting the album with a bit of lighthearted fun. The rapper Wudstick also pulls off a great role as a scientist, though I was kind of hoping to hear him rap a little bit!

The instrumentation is as amazing as ever, the only oddity being that it's a bit all to obvious when the guest musicians (such as Lori Linsdstruth or Derek Sherinian) are playing their solos, as the break from Arjen's style is quite obvious. Though this isn't really a negative, as Arjen is one of my favorite keyboardists, it's still refreshing to hear a few different tones for certain solos, and the guest musicians only appear on a handful of songs.

So with this early 2008 release, is it possible that Ayreon has done it again with the best album of the year? Only time will tell, but any other album being released this year has it's work cut out for it, and huge hurdle to overcome. This is one of those albums that sounds good at first, but with each successive listen opens itself up more and more to you, giving you a better experience each time. I can hardly listen to this album anymore without getting goosebumps at certain parts, or becoming lost in the music and story. Without a doubt this is the finest Ayreon release yet and I look forward to see how Arjen will top it.

After almost four years, Arjen Anthony Lucassen released the new Ayreon album, 01011001. My guess is that Arjen decided this would be the album that would connect all Ayreon stories, from the blind minstrel to the last migrator. And it does. Unfortunately, from a musical stand point, the album fails to deliver anything impressive.

The songs are completely unimaginative. Sometimes, when not paying attention to the lyrics, I thought I was hearing some other Ayreon album. The same rhythm, the same sounds... nothing new. And when Hansi Kürsch sings, it really feels like you are listening to Blind Guardian, not Ayreon (in contrast, when Mike Baker sung in "The Human Equation", you didn't feel like listening to Shadow Gallery. And I would dare to say that when James LaBrie sung in the same album, it also didn't feel like Dream Theater, although I'm not a great listener of Dream Theater.)

I guess the only good surprise in the whole album is Connecting the Dots, which is really nice to hear and doesn't sound like anything it was done before.

So far, I would say that's the weakest of all the albums. But who knows, maybe that was the idea, to give people some context for the next album...

Alright, this is my plan:
I will try to review some albums this year.
Last year I tried concerts and managed to review one festival.
Hopefully, I've learned my lesson, and will do better this time.

First off is an album, that is my album of the month for January for two reasons:
1) It's actually the only new album I listened to during January.
2) It's so damn good it could be album of the month any month in the last six billion years or so.

Yes, I'm of course talking about the new Ayreon album.



The album's called 01011001 (and is for some reason not added and linkable on last.fm), which is translated into 'Y' from binary. Catchy title. I like it.

Some of my favourite singers are featured on this album, including Daniel Gildenlöw (Pain of Salvation), Tom Englund (Evergrey), Jorn Lande (Jorn), Floor Jansen (After Forever), and there's also singers I didn't even know I loved, like Bob Catley (Magnum), Anneke van Giersbergen (Agua de Annique), Steve Lee (Gotthard), Marjan Welman (Elister), and so on.

Enough names already (although Joost van der Broek must be mentioned as well for his supreme awesomeness).

The album is, of course, a massive 2 cd concept album, featuring 102 minutes of progressive rock and metal.
That's a lot of music. How do one endure?

I've listened to this album exactly 30 times in the last week, and by listening I mean serious listening, sometimes singing along or reading the booklet, sometimes trying to do something else, but being distracted by the intro of the first song and ending up listening to the album instead.
Lets just say I endured it.

In fact, I would gladly listen to this album another 30 times right now, in this very second (although I doubt I would endure that, as a human mind would probably explode being feed that much information at once).

Lets stop rambling, I do that all the time anyway.

01011001 is a masterpiece, and I mean that in every sense of the word. It's clever but simple, complex but easy to grasp, progressive but catchy.
The concept is dark and heavy, and involves, among other things, the end of the world. Such a storyline could be very difficult to relate to (as I believe anyone who reads this hasn't been technically destroyed), but this one isn't. Because it's clever.
Because there are interludes, happy moments, dark moments, there are catchy choruses, weird instrumental parts.
Above all, there's always hope. The world ends on this very album, and somehow there's still hope! Now, that needs a very clever plan indeed.

The music of Ayreon is always recognizable, yet completely new each time. This album has got some classic Ayreon moments, and some parts where everything is just so new You don't even know what to compare it to. The old school keyboards are of course very frequently used, there are awesome guitar- and keyboard soli (and a violin solo as well!) in very different styles, there are fantastic strings and flutes, as well as great rock and metal guitar riffs.
"Has this album got everything?"
Yes, pretty much everything.

The vocals is possibly the most fantastic part of this album. With impressive 17 vocalists, there's all kinds of cool voices on this album, including a hiphop artist and a growler. There's cool elements of other bands incorporated in the music because of how the singers play their roles, but there's also singers appearing You hardly recognize when they do something completely different from what they usually do.

Finally, the production is of the best possible kind. Everything is crystal clear, and not a single little sound is lost in all the vocal harmonies, analog keyboards and sci-fi sound effects.

I've decided to try to give every album scores between one and ten, where ten is, of course, a masterpiece, and one is that kind of music that would actually have sounded better if it never where performed, recorded or composed.

On this scale, I want to give this album 11 or 21868, but the very reason I do this is to practice setting scores myself (as I usually end up with a review or a score with eight decimals), so this one is simple:
10/10.

En pocos días saldrá un nuevo álbum de Ayreon, titulado 01011001. A juzgar por las muestras que empiezan a circular por la red, tiene muy buena pinta, como cabe esperar de cualquier proyecto del genial compositor y músico Arjen Anthony Lucassen.

Ayreon es una propuesta musical realmente interesante: un metal progresivo aderezado por las voces femeninas más dulces. Se trata de una delicatessen para los oídos, como también ocurre con otros proyectos encabezados por A. A. Lucassen; cabe mencionar, a modo de ejemplo, Stream of Passion, que sin duda ha sido uno de los mejores descubrimientos musicales que un servidor ha hecho.

En lo que a este nuevo disco se refiere, hay que destacar el formidable elenco participante. Se trata de una lista bastante extensa de músicos, entre los que podemos encontrar a Anneke van Giersbergen (antigua cantante de The Gathering), Floor Jansen (After Forever), Simone Simons (Epica), Tom S. Englund (Evergrey), Hansi Kursch (Blind Guardian), Jonas Renkse (Katatonia), Steve Lee (Gotthard) y un largo etcétera.
