Fri 12 Sep – The Zombies

TocarGod Gave Rock And Roll To You. As Far As I Can See...

Спасибо Киеву, First Ukraine Entertainment, Национальному Авиационному Университету и всем тем, кто, как говорится, made it happen.

    And now, showtime!

The Zombies

Alex the Bird!)

The Zombies зіграли I Love You. Can't Nobody Love You.

а She's Not There?!", до мене донеслись перші звуки саме цієї композиції.

"Her voice was soft and cool
Her eyes were clear and bright
    But she's not there"

    Main performance:

    1. I Love You
    2. Can't Nobody Love You
    3. Mystified
    4. What Becomes of Broken Heart
    5. A Rose for Emily
    6. Care of Cell 44
    7. This Will Be Our Year
    8. I Want Her, She Wants Me
    9. Time of the Season
    10. I Do Believe
    11. Any Other Way (not recorded yet)
    12. Tell Her No
    13. Hold Your Head Up
    14. Sticks and Stones
    15. Old and Wise
    16. Say You Don't Mind
    17. I Don't Believe in Miracles
    18. She's Not There

    Encore:

    19. God Gave Rock 'n' Roll to You
    20. Summertime

  • Evolution of my musical taste

    Ago 30 2008, 13h50 por Blasfemic

This is a thing I've been trying to write down for some time now.

The evolution of your musical taste is a really interesting thing. Trough the years I've been listening to many different music styles - of which some left a considerable mark in my life and some were just a "come and go" and actually never really affected me much.

So let's go trough some of my personal music history. As now I passed my 20th birthday I got somewhere about 10 years of music history behind me and this should be a small flashback trough the years.

One of first bands I started listening to were The Beatles due to my fathers influence since he had lot's of old school records. From that time I also remember Neil Young and Joan Baez (that kind of died in my taste although some songs are still nice like TocarDiamonds And Rust – specially the Blackmore's Night cover).

To mention here is also my first original album which was from Zmelkoow (at that time and also now a very popular Slovenian rock band with funny lyrics and chill melodies) and I actually got it as my birthday present. The first album I bought was Pearl JamBinaural. (note: at that time I only had my pocket money so I had to constantly bother my father to buy me records, but I'll remember this one as the fist album I bought with my own money).

At the end of primary school (age 14 to say) I also started listening to more heavy tunes of which I remember Staind and also Linkin Park as they were popular at the time. I still play Staind from time to time, what can't be really said for Linkin Park which I haven't played for quite some time (except for some mp3 songs that randomly shuffled by the library). At the time I also got to know Metallica and Slayer for the first time – I was like wow this really kicks ass and actually abused it for some time which I find out is not a good thing to do. Anyway, after Metallica I got into metal and hard rock for some time (like let's say 2 years), went trough the typical bands and some almost unknown local bands and getting bored of the same tune all the time I actually started to hate it to the end of secondary school (yeah I'm the kind of person that likes variety and there just was to much metal for one hand but the second one didn't like it so I needed a switch).

The switch became with discovering the psychedelic rock and obviously with Pink Floyd (to be precise with The Final Cut which my father put on one day and I really liked it). After that I started getting more and more interested in psychedelic and alternative rock since they brought me musical elements that were unique from band to band and it was always a pleasure to listen to them. Bands like King Crimson (still one of my favorites), Velvet Underground, Deep Purple, Argent, Emerson, Lake & Palmer and to mention here also the rock/metal kind of fusion Opeth.

Apart from the so called »currently listened genre« there are also artists I'd like to mention in a separate section as they have a special meaning to me. I'd like to call them also music for my soul since they help me to relax and realy enjoy the melody the offer. Some of them are Katalena (Slovenian folk music merged in a modern tune), Richard Galliano (the passion of South America performed by an awesome accordion master), Buena Vista Social Club (you just have to love the guys for their positive spirit), Tribalistas, Jinx, also Jamiroquai, Skatalites, Carla Bruni (Quelqu'un m'a dit), Steel Pulse etc..

And here we come to the part that in that in a way clashes with the whole story. Switching to electronic. Why will you ask? Well after 20k play in 2 years (yeah I actually really listened to all those tracks – not just played) you have no alternative but to try something else. At least me.

Ok, I'll admit –it's not just because of that, but I also got fascinated by psychedelic culture as a whole since I find it's ideals a good thing to point to. The discovery of your inner self combined with music that can take you on a spiritual journey.

To mention here is on special band – Shpongle – a Raja Ram and Simon Postford project including 3 cds (hopefully more) of psychedelic/ambient trance music that you just have no choice but to love.

I hope I explained it well nice and short (for more bands you can always check my library). As you can see there is a big variety of genres in it. Don't just think now this guy has no taste – it ain't true. I always try to pick what is best from one genre and strive to the quality - not popularity.

What will come in the next years? Well I got no idea – it depends a lot from my own mood and personality changes (I noticed my personality changed a lot and so did the music I listen to).

    Enjoy the music.
  • Girl Talk - Feed the Animals (sample index)

    Jun 25 2008, 3h21 por wnc

So like everyone else, my mind was sufficiently blown by the new Girl Talk release Feed the Animals. Like his previous records, Greg Gillis jams an unfathomable number of samples into each track.

The following is a futile attempt at compiling a complete list of samples used in this clusterfuck of a masterpiece.

(note: about halfway through this I realized wikipedia had a reference I could have cut and paste from and thereby saved 5 hours of my life. The lesson here is that I'm retarded. Anyway, since we all know wikipedia is generated from only our most intelligent members of society, and is never tampered with in any way, I diverted to their list whenever there was a discrepancy.)

In this journal entry, I review albums that I've heard but haven't acquired.

Nine Inch NailsYear Zero: This is my introduction to Nine Inch Nails, the American industrial rock band led by Trent Reznor. All is well during the first two tracks, “Hyperpower!” and “The Beginning of the End”; the second track sounds like a World Party song, in fact. My introduction to industrial rock didn’t start as eventfully as I had predicted. I almost thought I stepped into a disco upon hearing the beginning of “Survivalism”; the track has a similar beat to The Arcade Fire’s “Keep the Car Running." Electronica and dance music meld together in “The Good Soldier.”

Hip-hop and electronica are fused in “The Greater Good” while a vibraphone plays discordant notes. The final three tracks, “Another Version of the Truth,” “In the Twilight,” and “Zero Sum,” are all strong ones, the first and last ones featuring piano. Year Zero appealed to me strongly, which is saying a lot since I’m not a fan of dancing. 4/5.

Peter Bjorn and JohnWriter’s Block: The first proper song, “Objects of My Affection,” is an energetic number in three that might best be heard on the open seas. The rhythms in “Young Folks” works well against several whistlers. “Amsterdam” combines hip-hop and pop elements resulting in something that would have fit in the 80s‘.

“Let’s Call It Off” has vibraphones in the introduction to its sunny melody. Looking for a trippy dance number? “The Chills” is your answer. “Roll the Credits” may bore you, though. The final song, “Poor Cow,” is a sparse acoustic number sans drums.

Writer’s Block reminds me a bit of The Gay Parade by of Montreal. Nonetheless, it seems to lose its way a bit in places. With more listens, I may think more of it, but it is only an above-average album overall to me right now (and only average compared to a lot of the good music I’ve heard recently). Five of the ten (proper) songs I like a bunch, and the other five don’t do much for me. 3.5/5.

DungenTio Bitar: “Intro” hits you immediately with a screaming guitar solo – this has to be something from Pink Floyd, not a European indie rock band! Then, a flute makes its appearance, and confusions dissipate. Jazz drumming kicks off “Familj”; the guitar sound reminds me of Pete Townsend of The Who, and an organ provides support. A violin comes in right before the end.

The harmonies in “Gor Det Nu” sound just like the Beatles – it’s creepy, actually. “C. Visar Vagen” has a beautiful melody with violin, and the acoustic guitar leads the bridge. Shades of Argent can be heard in “Sa Blev Det Bestamt.” The final tune, “En Gang I Ar Kom Det En Tar,” ends with a Floyd-esque piano/synth combo.

Tio Bitar is one of my favorite albums of the year. 4.5/5.

The Besnard LakesThe Besnard Lakes Are The Dark Horse: This album kicks off with some Beach Boys harmonies and ‘50s balladry in “Disaster,” but guitars distinguish The Besnard Lakes from So-Cal’s most famous band. “And You Lied to Me” is a dark rant about an ex who was less than faithful and ends with a jam. “Devastation” breaks into an awesome jam as well, adding some synths into the mix. Mournful strings start “Because Tonight”; in a slow-paced three, the song tugs at the listener’s heart.

One of the most impressive songs on the record is “Rides the Rails,” which combines guitars reminiscent of The Who with organ (in places) not unlike Pink Floyd. The ‘80s-style beginning to “On Bedford and Grand” was rather unexpected; the ditty ends somewhat monotonously compared to the rest of the album. The LP concludes with “Cedric’s War,” an uplifting singalong of sorts that stresses beats two and four. The Besnard Lakes Are the Dark Horse is another album not on my radar this year that I have thoroughly enjoyed. 4.5/5.

The Kings Of LeonBecause of the Times: This LP is my first introduction to the indie rock band. “Knocked Up” serves well for late-night lonely highway driving; an ambient-rock guitar solo comes in briefly about halfway through the song. A loud bass drives “Charmer,” and the Kings’ singer really screams here – just like a girl, in fact! (I’m feeling him, though, and a guitar even manages to echo some of his screams, which is pretty cool.) “Black Thumbnail” is the next rocker that really sticks out – the shout chorus is as rousing as they come, and the bass can easily be heard playing ascending triplets – nice.

“My Party” showcases the band delving into dancier rock, while “Ragoo” has a reggae flavor. The upbeat “Fans” caught my attention, with tasteful acoustic guitar strumming marking the song compared to all the ones before it. The singer clearly apes one of the singers of The Band (Richard Manuel, I think) in “The Runner,” not a bad thing, but I could live without the chorus in the background. I can hear U2 (The Edge, specifically) in “The Trunk.”

The Kings of Leon are one of the strongest straight-rock outfits I’ve heard in a while. Because of the Times is another masterful record released this year, and I’ll be sure to check out the rest of the band’s catalogue. 4.5/5.

The Twilight SadFourteen Autumns, Fifteen Winters: The title of the album hints at the tone one can expect when listening to it. The singer has quite a good voice (and a Scottish accent, to boot). “That Summer at Home I Had Become the Invisible Boy” is powerful song with accordion about a 14-year-old boy’s lack of identity. “Talking with Fireworks/Here, It Never Snowed” practically defines the word “bombastic,” and post-rock guitars can be found throughout.

Although the lyrics to “Mapped by What Surrounded Them” aren’t imaginative, the guitar soundscapes created are mindblowing. “And She Would Darken the Memory of Youth” suffers from just-ok lyrics as well, but the singer really belts some of them out when he’s into it; the second half of the song, which is bare post-rock bliss, probably works better as a live piece than a studio recording. Coldplay influences are evident in “I Am Taking the Train Home,” which isn’t necessarily a bad thing (to me), but it has lost the band some points in critics’ reviews.

Fourteen Autumns and Fifteen Winters is a solid debut album by The Twilight Sad. 4/5.
    .
EluviumCopia: “Amreik” sorrowfully begins the album with just horns, and “Indoor Swimming at the Space Station” uses the same piano line over and over backed by horns; the latter later is joined by a clarinet or oboe (can’t tell which). “Prelude for Time Feelers” is also driven by piano, and horns and synth assist.

The eerie “After Nature” takes an interesting route to conveying the message to save our environment. An absolutely beautiful piece is “Ostinato,” using organ as opposed to piano. A solemn ending to the record is afforded by “Repose in Blue.” Copia is fairly touching, but I wasn’t moved by the whole album. 3.5/5.

The AliensAstronomy For Dogs: Album opener “Setting Sun” is a solid guitar-driven rock piece that states at the end, “We are The Aliens.” “Robot Man” starts off as a dancey number but then changes into a piano-led pop number; at this point, the band starts singing actual lyrics (but not many). The first song that caught my attention was “I am the Unknown.” The chord progression is solid, and the guitar-bass-synth-drums combination provides a pleasing wall of sound, but more “We are The Aliens” chants were unexpected. A harmonica makes its appearance in “Tomorrow,” giving a country feel to the song, but the lonesome background vocals coupled with good acoustic guitar work at the end really make the track.

Reggae beats dominate the beginning of “Rox”; the phrase, “I am the robot man” is uttered for the second time in the album, which leads me to believe there is supposed to be a story behind the music. I wasn’t expecting a sad piano ballad in Astronomy for Dogs after more than a half hour had passed, but “She Don’t Love Me No More” fits the bill pretty well. With about a minute and a half left in the song, after the first part of the tune ends, a mournful solo piano piece with strings backing plays. “Glover” picks up where “She Don’t Love Me No More” left, but transitions into an interesting number that spends some time in double time, and then swings a little later.

The album focuses on the “she” the rest of the way through. I have to say that as whimsical as Astronomy for Dogs is (especially considering how much it deals with losing said “she”), I really enjoyed it. What goofy fun (and melancholy, toward the end). 4.5/5.

Maroon 5It Won’t Be Soon Before Long.: This is my first exposure to Maroon 5 since I have never heard their debut album, released five years ago. “If I Never See Your Face Again” is an ok dance number, but “Makes Me Wonder” is absolutely groovy while maintaining a head-banger attitude. Two more tunes with solid beats are “Little of Your Time” and “Wake Up Call.”

There is an interesting slowdown sequence in “Can’t Stop,” another solid track that is more rock than dance pop. “Goodnight Goodnight” witnesses the band doing its best Bush impersonation with its guitar line. A really heavy section is heard in “Kiwi.” The final song, “Back at Your Door,” is a GREAT slow dance number (you know, the last song at prom or something).

There are some great songs on It Won’t Be Soon Before Long., but much of the album is mediocre nonetheless. 3.5/5.

120 DaysSedated Times: “Float,” the first piece, is a mood instrumental; the second song, “Let Me Come Down,” begins with the rhythm guitar playing eighth notes (a la Joy Division). The vocalist sounds very much like Ian Curtis. Shades of Interpol color “So This Is Suicide.” A welcome change of pace is afforded by “Justine,” an up-tempo punk number with an active bass line.

One of the highlights of the EP is the title track; the first part is nothing special, but a nice instrumental ending shows that the band at least looks to expand from its punk and post-punk influences. The final song, “Come Out Come Down Fade Out Be Gone,” is the most interesting, as it begins with a jangly beat and eventually picks up the electric piano, a cool drum beat, and guitar. The fadeout with the synth is longing but tasteful.

Parts of Sedated Times suggest that 120 Days will go on to make interesting music, but that time isn’t yet. 2.5/5.
  • They're a hard rockin' band

    ACIDAcid (1974)

I’ve heard quite a few continental European bands that I would place in the same category as this group from Austira: talented musicians without material to match their skills. Many of these bands are now available on CD courtesy of the Garden of Delights label (Shiver, Virus, and so on). Acid plays hard rock 70s style with screaming guitar and blazing Hammond organ, so some comparisons to Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, Argent, and Grand Funk Railroad are in order, but as I said, the material is substandard. “After Midnight”, “Hard Rockin’ Band”, “Midnight Queen” and “Like a Rolling Stone” are not promising titles, and there are no surprises here. Even a Mellotron can’t make up for the stupid lyrics. How about this, the opening of “Midnight Queen”:

Now that the show is over
Got to find someone with whom to spend my time.
    I look at many people
Till I find a girl who really looks so fine
I take her by the hand
Tell her to be knowin’ (not sure of this word)
Ask her to be just mine for tonight.

    Urgh.

And the chorus of “Like a Rolling Stone” goes like this, repeated endlessly:

    And tonight at the party
I will be tumblin’ like a rolling stone.

But as I said, the playing is pretty solid, so if you can stand the lyrics, it may be worth a listen. 7/15.
  • Zombies live is great... with one exception

Sat 9 Sep – The Zombies, Phantom Planet, The Mooney Suzuki, The Woggles

    (previously posted Sept 10th 2006.)

I saw the Zombies play last night... yes THEE Zombies, who last night included Colin Bluntstone, Rod Argent, Jim Rodford on bass (from Argent and 80's Kinks !), his son on drums, and some idiot wanker 80's session player on lead guitar. The band sounded great and all was wonderful until this dude's selfish, almost metal solos pop up every other song or so. He was pretty obviously hired for the tour because he played the two harder rock Argent songs really well. Rod Argent's great and tasteful organ solos made up for the uneccessary wanks, and Colin Blunstone seemed displeased but cordial when this moron was using COLIN'S mic stand to finish off the garbage headbanger solo on "She's Not There"(!!!), which he totally ruined. Sucked most of the joy for this perfect song right out of the room on that one. He might have been especially showing off because I kept giving him the thumbs down after all his solos, but man, he deserved it and more of a scolding. He's on stage with the legendary Zombies playing fast 80's guitar solos that where stupid in the 80's.
Anyways, they played two Argent songs, 4 songs from Odessey and Oracle, and 3 or 4 really early Zombies songs. The last song was the first song they ever recorded, Summertime by George Gershwin which was soft, pretty, and outstandingly good. And I'm sure their guitar player hates playing it (ha ha).
The show was "Little Steven's Garage band circus" or something like that, and includes 20-25 minute sets by Phantom Planet, Boss Martian, The Woggles and mooney suzuki. All were pretty good bands except Phantom Planet who were pretty shitty. But we just went to watch Zombies and specifically Colin Bluntstone. I was hoping to get an autograph, but Colin wasnt around before or after the gig. Rod Argent was around before the gig, incognito wearing a long blonde Edgar Winters wig that made him look more british than he actually is. I thought "oh, that must be Rod Argent."
