  • The siren songs

    Mai 24 2009, 3h01 por marciana_

On the last day of summer the sun shines bright
And we're walking through the woods
What if love is the greatest damn liar of all
Would you trust me with your life?

On the last day of summer the clouds are white
And I'm sitting by the lake
And she's singing my name, she's beckoning me
If I just lose myself for now
    For one day

I want to drown in her precious arms
I want to listen to the siren songs
She got me down into the water
And she got me holding on

And she's floating oh so peacefully
    As I'm watching from below
In the bluest water I ever saw
The palest body to be striped
    By the sun

I want to drown in her precious arms
I want to listen to the siren songs
She got me down into the water
And she got me holding on

So let me drown in those precious arms
With all my untouchabilities washed away
Let me for once be lost for reason
    Let me be lost
    For words

    @ 3/3/2008 ... i removed this one:

    Bring out your finest wines
    your holy shrines
    and let them go
    Freed from the chains of
what has remained of a life
    that you don’t wanna know
The bass and the drums will
    hammer it home
with their marching band of the proud
    Celebrate ages,
    all life stages,
seas and the winds and the clouds
    The message’s been written
    from your prison,
    see what tomorrow will be

    (see what tomorrow will be
    see what tomorrow will be
    see what tomorrow will be)

    Got every reason to believe
that all must decide to break free
Was it a tantrum when you said
that all the laughs were on me
Then i’ll know my bet will win
when the saints go marching in
Then i’ll know my bet will win
when the saints go marching in
    Go marching in….

@ 21/3/2008 this one had to make room for next one ^^

I’ve made a good living by dying
Endless wait, grey solace ruling my mind
Constrained by time and drained by the cold,
still I found myself shivering under the rising sun

You are the star, you are the moon
You are the soil where shadows bloom
Casting a light which brings me peace
Where the caverns of death will freeze

    The flower never grew
But I love you just the same
Even though like a bird you flew
I will love you just the same

I am the blood, a a fire in your soul …
And I will grow in landscapes so cold

Oh, how I feel you in every single detail,
as you lurk inside my troubled dreams
There is no hope as long we walk this earth,
but you should know my universe screams
    It screams for you

    I cry for you!

    The flower never grew
But I love you just the same
Even though like a bird you flew
I will love you just the same

It's the song "Bloodflower" of the new Draconian album Turning Season Within

    @ 29/3/2008

    The sorrow of my soul,
    earthbound and cold
    The tide will never turn
    I’ve been dead for years,
    drowned in all my tears
    Have you forsaken me?

    Frequent days of loss,
    crawling to the cross
    The silence screams so loud
    Conquered by the sun,
    my fate is done
    I’m pulling down the shroud

    Blazing through my eyes,
    your tender disguise
    So far out of reach
A life of dismay turns into grey
    Will you abandon me?

    Here in the light
    It’s pitch black night
    A fever on the rise
    Dying from within
    And reborn into sin
    I’m tearing up the sky

    Feel the world inside;
the ghost of me calling you
    Feel the world inside;
the ghost of me haunting you

    This sentient cage,
cutting through time with a blunt smile
Would you help me slit my wrists?
See me cry, help me… DIE!

So frail the veil of life
So beautiful the face of death
    Suddenly reveries bloom
    into night’s heavy drenching

    And life leaves you cold,
    weary and old…
    It’s hard just to breathe
    You know me so well,
    I’m going through hell
    Won’t you please,
    follow me?

    Feel the world inside;
the ghost of me calling you
    Feel the world inside;
the ghost of me haunting you

    You cracked the ice,
    and I wept
    You covered the sun,
    and I slept
    You whispered the truth,
    and I smiled
    You kissed my soul,
    and I died

Another beautiful song of the new Draconian album
Turning Season Within, the song Earthbound

Getting close by going far away
    Going far by staying here
    To the kind of place
    Where loneliness ‘s travelling best
    Leaving ill and well alone
    If all fails
    All fails
Let the clock strike upon this resting hour

    For now
    For now
    Leaving point despair
    Leaving point hope

Getting lost to find a way back home
    Getting back by letting go
    Make another thought fall
    In the flow of things
And death is just a breath away
    But so is life
    Saying this, but knowing not
    Which scares the most

    For now
    For now
    Leaving point despair
    Leaving point hope

    Whatever worry
    running through the veins
    When you go, we go
    Whatever worry
    Raise the flair
    When you’re there
    You’re there
    Getting close
    Abandoning point home
    Leaving point despair
Looking up from the rush of things
    in the point of life
    that is now
    the point of life
    For now

[Part One - From Hand To Mouth]

    From day to day
    From hand to mouth
    We're turning around
    Vicious ritual
    Getting used to it all
    Falling down again
    We're waiting for
    The decrees of providence
    I don't want to waste
    Any more of my life
    Live from day to day
    Live from hand to mouth
    Facing the light
    I brush aside your plans
    I'm going to have
    It all my own way
And when that all shattered I felt I'd broken my fall
Couldn't pretend that I felt strong about us anymore
Without your help I finally started to live my own life
I just want you to know this time

    [Part Two - Secret Exhibition]

I just want to feel your sigh on my neck
    Want to feel your breath
    Feel your need to stay
    You don't know my name
    Don't know my face
Only thoughts I share in my secret place
    Secret exhibition
    Cure for loneliness
    I've ground to a halt
    There's no turning back
You know there are things I just can't forget
    You've helped me so much
    To learn to be detached
But when that all shattered I felt I'd broken my fall
Couldn't pretend that I felt strong about us anymore
Without that help I finally started to live my own life
And I know I don't need you now
    Secret exhibition
    Cure for loneliness
Life is much too short to be whiled away with tears
    Secret exhibition
    Cure for loneliness
    I erase you now
    I don't need you now
I erase you now with all of my past

    [Part Three - Vicious Ritual]

    [Instrumental]

    Riverside - Second Life Syndrome

    @ 25/4/2008

one of my precious ones had to leave (still wont be forgotten)

    In the name of desperation
    I call your name
    A lamentation I sigh
    Again and again

    Spiritual eclipse
The gateways are closed for me to seek

    The night...
    A veil of stars, watching
My shadow is born from light
The light of the eye, in darkness

    Over troubled waters memories soar
    Endlessly, searching night and day
The moonlight caresses a lonely hill
With the calmness of a whisper

    I wear a naked soul
A blank face in the streaming water
    It is cold in here
Frost scar my coat with dust

Eyes attach to your mute portrait
    We spoke only through thoughts
    Together we gazed, awaited
Hours brought thirst and the rising sun

    Sunbirds leave their dark recesses
    Shadows glid the archways

Do not turn your face towards me
    Confronting me with my lonliness
You are in a forest unknown
    The secret orchard
And your voice is vast and achromatic
    But still so precious

Lullaby of the crescent moon took you
    Mesmerized, its kaleidoscopic face
    Granted you a hollow stare
Another soul within the divine herd

    I have kept it
    The Awakenth symbol
    Hiddin inside the golden shrine
Until we rejoice in the meadow
    Of the end
When we both walk the shadows
It will set ablaze and vanish
    Black rose immortal

    It is getting dark again
    Dusk shuffle across the fields
The evening trees moan as if they knew
At night I always dream of you

  • Choons of 2007

    Fev 1 2008, 10h19 por ChoonyFish

    Albums of the Year

    1) Burial - Untrue
Echoey dance vocal snippets, minimal dubstep beats, pops, clicks and crackles - best served on headphones. Gorgeous, late-night inner-city vibe.

    2) Bachi da pietra - Non Io
Italian alt blues guitar, voice and percussion - like a mellowed-out Caspar Brötzmann. Sort of.

    3) José González - In Our Nature
If someone had told me 2 years ago I'd soon get into this acoustic folky shit I'd have laughed. Cover of Massive Attack's "Teardrop" is even better than the original...

    4) Dave Gahan - Hourglass
Stong electronic pop from frontman of Depeche Mode. "Saw Something" is more lovely than anything I ever expected from Dave sans Martin Gore.

    5) Interpol - Our Love to Admire
Oh how Interpol divide opinion. "Joy Division rip-off!" Yes Paul Banks sounds like Ian Curtis, but that's where it ends. Joy Division were stark and raw - Interpol are fleshed out and sumptuous and that.

    The rest...
    Andy Stott - Merciless
Angels Of Light - We Are Him
    Blotnik Brothers - Mizuage
    Blues Control - Blues Control
Einstürzende Neubauten - Alles Wieder Offen
    Grinderman - Grinderman
    Panda Bear - Person Pitch
Porn Sword Tobacco - New Exclusive Olympic Heights
    Recoil - subHuman
    Siouxsie Sioux - Mantaray
Throbbing Gristle - Part Two: The Endless Not
    Von Südenfed - Tromatic Reflexxions

    How could I forget?
Editors new album. Not played it yet. Silly me.

    -----------------------------------------------------

    Tracks of the Year

    Battles - "Atlas" from Mirrored
Someone suggested this sounds like Ewoks doing post rock and they were bob-on. Vocals pitch-shifted back and forth alongside rigid guitar/drums/electronics/loops. Was a highlight on Later with Jools Holland, but I lost interest with the rest of the album, as utterly fashionable as it is.

The Gossip - "Standing in the Way of Control"
Banging dance pop, belting vocals and bouncy, dirty bass.

    Serebro - "Song No.1"
Russia's Eurovision entry. Yes, that's right. It had all the hallmarks of a UK number 1 pop hit , however with sheep mentality absent from phone voting, the UK votes were all over the place and we gave 12 points to some other rubbish. Great bouncing girlie pop with balls.

Gym Class Heroes - "Cupid's Chokehold"
It's that rap tune with the Supertramp sample. Love it or hate it catchy pop.

Ghosts - "The World Is Outside"
Bland verses actually, but the indie-pop chorus stuck in my head for days.

    -----------------------------------------------------

    Honorary Albums of the Year
    Stuff I discovered in 2007.

    Ulver - Perdition City (2001)
Slick sax-infused trip-hop electronica. A mostly instrumental soundtrack for a late night. Ulver were once a (frankly unlistenable) black metal outfit so delve into the back catalogue at your peril.

Cult of Luna - Salvation (2002) + Somewhere along the Highway (2006)
Swedish doom metal. Gentle acoustic guitars build up crescendo-like into a crushing sonic powerdrive.

    Allerseelen - Abentuerliches Herz (2002)
This album moves from Neubauten-esque industrial to acoustic loveliness to dance beats and ends with a metal guitar whine followed by a Wagnerian string motif. And still manages to gel really well as a whole.

Henrik Nordvargr Bjorkk - Vitagen (2005)
Dark doomscapes conjouring imagery of dark towers, windy tunnels and downright creepiness.

    Reuber - Südpol
Rolling electronic soundscapes, this was perfect on a sunny and breezy day on the beach.

    The rest...
    AZ - The Format (2006)
    Burial - Burial (2006)
    Isis - Oceanic (2002) + Panopticon (2004)
Old Man Gloom - Christmas (2004)
    Melvins - A Senile Animal (2006) + Stag (1996)
    Monolake - Polygon Cities (2005)
    Sahg - I (2006)
    Sunn O))) & Boris - Altar (2006)

    ----------------------------------------------------

    Honorary Tracks of the Year

Anywhen - "The Siren Song" + "Postcard" from The Opiates (2001)
"The Siren Song" is possibly the saddest song ever to have been played into these ears. The whole album isn't bad but the other tracks are far outshined by these two.

    Sunn O)))
    - "My Wall" from White 1 (2003)
    - "It Took the Night to Believe" from Black One (2005)
"My Wall" is percussionless crushing monolithic doom that's 25 minutes long. Julian Cope provides OTT spoken word nonsense, but when he eventually shuts his mouth (pun intended) that's when it really opens up into the sound of planets forming. "It Took the Night to Believe" is some scary shit with black metal vocals just this side of laughable.

Clutch - "Burning Beard" from Robot Hive / Exodus (2005)
Full on metal with a strange time signature. Yet to give the album a proper listen. Rock!

Blotnik Brothers - "Electro Manifesto (Beats on Demand)" from Museful Revolution EP (2004)
Remember 1984? Spinning on your back on the kitchen lino? This cool modern electro would be great for twirling away on the laminate flooring of 2007.

Afrika Bambaataa - "Ain't Talkin' No Shhh" from Dark Matter Moving at the Speed of Light (2004)
    Enormously catchy electro funk.

  • Learning to breathe

    Set 15 2006, 21h19 por Infinitissimi

This couple of months have been quite miserable, although I had someone really close to share the misery with. It didn't work so smooth, and I had to stop for a while, get few breaths of fresh air, feel that I'm still alive, and that some obstacles along the way (or just misfortunes as some might call them) doesn't mean that some really important things in life (like true and only love) are meant to change or end. Maybe just elevate, or as I like to say - evolve.

Life's is just really weird, and destiny's got a strange way of changing the scripts, that we thought were written a long time ago. And as soon as we understand that, pretty simple yet tricky fact of existance, well...we will feel more complete and...to put it diffrently..free, and quite happy actually.

I would like to thank some great bands, that I've shared time and emotions in this hard and mind-bending time for me:

    my beloved Oceansize

    also magical Mogwai

    breathtaking songs of Jeremy Enigk

intense and emotionally close to me as no other Editors

Switchfoot for 2 special songs that kept my heart beating (TocarOnly Hope and TocarLearning To Breathe from which I named that little note )

And last but not least, couple of bands that represent that eerie indie/post-rock/slowcore/melancholic/sensual landscape in my life :

Kashmir, Mew, Under Byen, Sciflyer, dredg, The White Birch, Anywhen, Low, Pelican, Archive and Red Sparowes

VERY SPECIAL THANX to twilight for giving me the opportunity, and unquestionable pleasure and satisfaction of listening to music of such great standarts. I have in mind right now beautifuly intimite music of American Football , Owen, and July Skies in which I'm actually falling in love :)

    Take care Y'All :)

I don't remember the name of the flick, but it was about two punks(?)that get kinda on the ride of their lives. Not much story, kinda road movie like, but lots of emotion and a nice twist.

When I think about it, Girl From the North Country really fits in there, but it actually had to grow on me.
You had the option to give comments to those short films on a website and I wrote that Thomas Feiner, or better the music of his band Anywhen would be accomplishing best, what seemed to be intended in the film.

Maybe that isn't true all the way, but if you get a chance to listen to The Opiates without haste, do it, you'll find it a masterpiece.

Mr. Dylan, despite your voice, that makes me being unable to listen to nearly all of your tracks, this one really got me.

Hi everybody. I used to find lots of journals talking about post-rock bands. I'm a big fan of everything concering the post-rock thing, but on the other hand I really love music that comes with lots of melancholic tunes / feelings.
Many people might call that kind of music slowcore or sadcore. In general I would agree with that tag, but there are also lots of singer/songwriters that seem to fit into the slowcore genre more or less.

I'm trying to put some links together with bands that I like a lot. It is appreciated if anyone could recommend bands that would fit into the listed artists.

    Here we go:

    The White Birch
They released 3 albums so far and their 2nd album "Star Is Just A Sun" is highly recommended. Beautiful vocals with lots of piano.

    Portrait of David
This is the Solo-work of the singer of "The White Birch". Even more pale and static. The emptiness between each note is the key.

    Coastal
Coastal for sure are outstanding. They released 2 albums and a split Ep. I'd recommend their latest album "Halfway To You". They sound a little like LOW probably

    Low
There is a need to add this band because they are the slowcore band No.1

    July Skies
July Skies are amazing. 2 albums and a 7" are released so far. Just beautiful vocals with lots of delay and a single guitar full of reverb.

    Stars of the Lid
Their music goes into a different direction, but it fits perfectly into the list. I really love their ambient music that never gets boring, although you can only hear synths and piano.

    The Dead Texan
I cant just list "Stars Of The Lid" without to reference to Adam Wiltzie's other band "The Dead Texan". I even like their debut much more than "Stars Of The Lid". The other guy of "SOTL", Brian McBride does some nice solostuff himself, but I prefer Adam Wiltzie's stuff.

    J. Tillman
Josh Tillman is a brilliant singer/songwriter who's emotionally music and voice just hits me in the heart. He released 2 albums of which I'd recommend his debut "I Will Return".
His page isn't up lately, no idea why.

    Soul Whirling Somewhere
This might be the sadcore band No.1. I dont want to say much about it. The music speaks for itself.
"The Last Time I Left" might be one of the teariest songs of all time.

    Great Lake Swimmers
Another singer/songwriter output that just dont seem to be from this world. His voice is beautiful and most of his songs are touching me inside. 2 albums so far, both are recommended.

    Spokane
Another band that sounds a lot like LOW. Nevertheless they are brilliant. Their album "Measurement" is a masterpiece. Can't wait for their new album in fall 2006!

    Anywhen
Sometimes I ask myself how it was possible to record such a warm and emotional album full of deep feelings and pure sadness. I am talking about Anywhens latest album "The Opiates" which was released in 2001. Thomas Feiner's vocals aren't from this world. Its sad that this band seem to rest in peace.
    - there is no homepage -

    Goldmund
I can understand if some people start to get bored while listening to piano-music, but "Goldmund" is different from most other piano stuff. Again its the stillness between every played note that makes this album so strong. Album title: "Corduroy road". No vocals here.

    Pacific UV
This is a band I dont know much about, but I can easily recommend their self-titled album, because its great. "God Is So Tired", one of the songs from this album is amazing.
Their homepage seems down, but here's a review link:

    The Sky At Night
Its not very easy to compare this band with others. It fits perfectly to this list, because its slow and sad, and while most of the songs are done with a lots of piano stuff, the vocals are seperated into male/female vocals. Everything here comes up with lots of delay. Everyone should check out their song "My Reasons", downloadable from their page.
Their debut album "Hope For Dummies" will be re-released in march 2006, and it seems there will be some new songs on it aswell.

    Early Day Miners
Most people might call their music just Indie Rock or something like that. But of course they are doing much more then this. Everything about this band is perfect, and I can't seem to find an album that I like more than another by them.
Everyone should listen to the songs "Light In August" and "Bedroom, Houston" to get an idea how beautiful this band is.

    Mark Kozelek
Everything that has something to do with Kozelek is brilliant. His solo works, Red House Painters and Sun Kil Moon.
I think there is no need to speak much about him. He has an amazing voice.

Bands that I missed to add, but need to appear:

    Rivulets

    The Montgolfier Brothers

    Grand Salvo

    -----

Of course there are lots of other bands that are not listed here, but I tried to figure out my favorites.
    Any recommendations are welcome.
Again it is shown, that the line between slowcore, sadcore, singer/songwriter and indie stuff is thin sometimes..

Oh, and hugs to Northward who's been sharing music with me since ages :)
