So it's been three whole years, more-or-less, since I joined. So what's happened over the past year?

The trend of my plays increasing over the years has continued, up around another 50% to around 18,000 plays in the last year.

Only one artist in my overall Top Ten this time last year has failed to make it this year, The Gathering. They only had a few plays over the last year (must've not been in the mood, sorry) and dropped slowly and steadily. Their place in my Top Ten was taken by Wildhearts frontman Ginger.

Speaking of The Wildhearts, they repeatedly changed positions with my other top four artists, Ramones, AntiProduct and Neil Leyton, each having at some point been my top artist in this last year. I continued my way through Rhino's Ramones reissues, which no doubt helped them, whilst The Wildhearts released a new record last spring. AntiProduct self-released seven EPs, which raised funds for the band to play a major shows in the USA. Leyton put out two very different albums and as I'm supporting him in the recording of his next, I've been receiving occasional live and demo goodies.

A very good new and final release from Area 54, that also reminded me how good their earlier albums were, gave them a strong year in my charts.

Several artists have made a large impression on my overall charts over the past year. I discovered Jucifer and Bif Naked toward the end of the summer last year (see here) and both have accumulated over three hundred plays in the last year. Decent back catalogues and cracking latest albums in both cases helped. Red Sparrowes are another artist in a similar position who are just outside my Top Fifty - that's no doubt due to their long song lengths making a quick listen rather difficult.

I managed to greatly expand my collection for both The Black Halos and Supersuckers in the last year and they've shot up my charts as a result.

Winnebago Deal are a fairly new discovery and have made a noticeable impact. Their incendiary live performances and (mainly) short and sharp tracks make it very easy to listen to quite a bit of their music.

The Answer released an excellent album in Rise. That alone earns them a Top Fifty slot, as well as stuff like their cover of Sweet Emotion.

The Cramps, The Stooges, The Dictators and MC5 have all made appearances in the lower reaches of my Top Fifty thanks to a Ramones inspired exploration of things not-quite punk and cheap prices at Fopp (sniff). This also saw me pick up stuff by Richard Hell and the Voidoids, Patti Smith, New York Dolls, Flamin' Groovies and The Detroit Cobras.

Motorhead were another artist to benefit from this. I still don't have a huge amount of stuff by them, which is rather surprising considering I've seen them live many times...

Whilst the upper reaches of my charts have been fairly stable, without mass changes, the other end of my Top Fifty seems to be in a something approaching constant flux. But hey, that's part of the fun of this place ;)

That's all I can remember just now. If you have any questions on how good or shit a band were or whatever, just ask!

So today (well, technically now yesterday) is my second anniversary of joining here at LastFM. Apparently I've nearly doubled the amount of listening I do over the past year, from around 6,300 tracks in year one to around 12,400 in year two.

Anyway, think it might be time for reasons why I've listened to some of my artists, so here's my thoughts on my top ten (and yes, I do feel like a links whore)

The Wildhearts mean a lot to me personally, I first got into them at what was a very difficult time personally. I know it's a cliche, but their music helped me through the rough times. They've also released a helluva lot of good stuff, blending some of the stuff you might hear from The Beatles, Motorhead, Kiss and the Ramones.

Neil Leyton was my find of the year in 2003. I got his ...Midnight Sun record near the beginning of the year and when I first heard it I just led down and closed my eyes, totally immersed in the music from start to finish. Leyton's style of thought provoking rather eclectic singer-songwriter rock then hooked me.

Ramones shouldn't really need an introduction. Great pop hooks and catchy tunes wrapped up in two minute bundles of punk energy. The short length of their songs has no doubt contributed to their high position.

AntiProduct are another band who manage to bring out some great pop influences to rock music. Colourful and slightly scary, AntiProduct really should be seen live - seen them 14 times so far - where you're never quite sure what you're going to get. One thing you won't get is a boring show.

The Streetwalkin' Cheetahs are a far simpler affair. Straightforward garage influenced rock & roll for the most part, with nods to bands like the Stooges and MC5 (they've worked with Wayne Kramer as well). Fronted by KNAC.com staffer and journo (but we won't hold that against him) Frank Meyer, the Cheetahs ended up being my find of the year in 2002.

Backyard Babies are a band I've been a fan of since I first heard them on a covermount CD way back in 98. These Swedes share many attributes with bands like the Wildhearts and AntiProduct, topping it off with a dirty, sleazy approach that makes them just damn good fun.

Nashville Pussy are another fairly straightforward rock & roll band, this time taking their influences from AC/DC and Southern US rock rather then the Detroit sound the Cheetahs emulate. Rather crude (in every sense of the word), the Pussy nonetheless know how to write a damn fine rock song and perform it with real style, all in the space of two minutes.

Entombed - death metal + rock & roll. What's not there to love? You end up with an artist that manages to sidestep many of the metal stereotypes and bring out songs that aren't all reliant on duelling twin guitars and extended solos, rather using infectious grooves and bludgeoning riffs.

Brides of Destruction are a band I only got into at the end of last year, having seen them live. Tracii Guns had something of a supergroup here but after losing Nikki Sixx to Motley Crue and Ginger Wildheart after a brief period with the band, it was questionable how the bands second record would come out. The answer was brilliantly. Fine slices of classic 70s & 80s inspired rock.

The Gathering have suffered rather due to their lengthy track times (in comparison to the rest of my top ten). Usually my chill-out artist of choice, moody and atmospheric is the main attraction here, with beautifully arranged instrumentation and Anneke's soaring vocals.



So there you go. Be interesting to see what we get next year.

Those lovable rogues AntiProduct need a bit of help - they've been asked to play the All Freaks Halloween Ball in Toledo, Ohio, with Mindless Self Indulgence. Just one problem, other than that they're playing UK shows on days either side of that, these guys don't have any label who'll bail them out, they need to raise the cash to get them to the US and back sharpish.

INBREDS LEAVE LABEL
The Inbreds have split from Anticulture Records. The band are now in negotiations with other labels concerning the release of their new EP. You can hear an unmastered version of new track 'The Manwrecker' at www.myspace.com/theinbreds. The Inbred play at the first Metal Massacre Club Night, which happens at Camden's Purple Turtle in London tonight. The event is headlined by Orange Goblin. Also on the bill are Obiat, Namaste and Cambian Dawn.

Placebo have announced a fistful of shows:

COMETS ON TOUR
US crew Comets on Fire are coming to the UK/Ireland. The band, who release new album 'Avatar' through Sub Pop on August 7, play:

RIBBED FOR CHARITY
The Ribeye Brothers (who include former members of Monster Magnet), Tokyo Dragons and Nothin' to Lose play the Camden Underworld in London on August 10. This is charity gig, with all proceeds going to the Multiple Sclerosis Society. Tickets cost £8.

THRESH METAL
Swedish metal heroes HammerFall are to release their new album on October 31. The 11-tracker is to be called 'Threshold', and will be on the Nucldear Blast label.

ANTI SENSE
The Senseless, which is the solo project of bassist Sam Bean from The Berzerker, have signed to Anticulture. Expect an album of fast, melodic and harsh death metal next spring.

MY CHEMICAL COMIC
My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way is to write his own comic book series, called 'The Umbrella Academy'. This is to be a six-issue series from Dark Horse Comics, telling the story of scientist/adventurer/cricketer Sir Reginald Hargreeves and his family of abnormal superheroes. But, don't expect anything to hit the stands before next year, though.

BREED E-CARD
Breed 77 have a new E-card available: [urlhttp://www.inmyblood.co.uk. This offers a free MP3 download, two free video podcasts and information on all the tour dates.

B*LL*CKS TO REASON
Hundred Reasons have contributed the song 'No Pretending' to the charity album 'B*ll*cks To Cancer', which has just been released. All proceeds will go to the Everyman Male Cancer Campaign. This CD is available exclusively from Virgin Megastores, priced at £4.99. It may also be downloaded at http://www.virgindigital.com.

FALL OUT PAIR JOIN PETA CAMPAIGN
Fall Out Boy's Andy Hurley (drums) and Joe Trohman (guitar/vocals) have join PETA's campaign to persuade KFC to end its suppliers' worst abuses of those chickens that end up in KFC's buckets. PETA is urging KFC to, “Eliminate the worst abuses that chickens suffer in the factory farms and slaughterhouses of its suppliers, including crippling injuries because of cruel breeding practices and the overuse of drugs, having their throats slit while still conscious, and being dunked into tanks of scalding-hot water while they are still alive and able to feel pain”. The Fall Out Boy pair join The Darkness, Jet, and Good Charlotte in signing and promoting peta's 'Kentucky Fried Cruelty' petition campaign. SUPER ZOMBIE SONGS
Rob Zombie is writing songs for the soundtrack of animated movie 'The Haunted World Of El Superbeasto', which is due out next year. Zombie himself has written the script and is producing the film, which is based on his comic of the same title.


FREE PANIC
Johnny Panic are to play a special show in London. This happens in Camden's At Proud on July 27. They will be showcasing new songs, as well as old faves. Support comes from Once a Thief.
Entry is free between 7pm and 9pm, and £4 afterwards.

CORNELL JOINS BOND
It's now been confirmed that Audioslave frontman Chris Cornell is to perform the main song for the upcoming James Bond movie 'Casino Royale'. This song's to be called 'You Know My Name', which Cornell also co-write with David Arnold.

METALLICA JOIN ITUNES
Metallica have now made all of their albums available for download through iTunes - but only in North America. The first four records have also been expanded for iTunes users only, to include previously unreleased live tracks, recorded in Seattle during 1989.

ROADRUNNER PREPARE COMPILATIONS
Sepultura, Fear Factory, Ill Niño and Type O Negative are to have 'Best Of' albums released by Roadrunner in mid-September.

OLD NAILS
German metalheads Old are to release their debut album, 'Down With The Nails', through Peaceville on August 14.

SUM OP
The Operation is a new project featuring Sum 41's Cone McCaslin and Todd Morse from H20/Juliette & The Licks. The pair go under the stage names of Dr. Dynamite (McCaslin, who provides vocals/bass/keyboards) and Dr. Rocco (Morse, who provides vocals/guitar/keyboards). The musical style is said to be garage/indie. Check it out for yourself at [url}http://www.myspace.com/theoperationmusic. Three songs have been posted.

PROGPOWER PAIN
Jon Oliva's Pain are to headline the second Progpower Festival, due to happen at Cheltenham Race Course on March 31. Also on the bill are Norwegian/American band Kamelot, Germany's Haggard (a 17-piece medieval metal band, making their live UK debut) and Dreamscape, Sweden's Scar Symmetry and Cloudscape.

A LETTER FROM ANTIPRODUCT
"The Members of AntiProduct, on their recent return from recording and networking with the Rich and Powerful in Los Angeles, were stopped on their arrival into Heathrow Int'l Airport by Customs Agents in the 'Nothing To Declare' lane. What the band had failed to mention in their arrival documents were the 600 red and black striped Jungle Rocket vibrators they were carrying in their suitcases, courtesy of their good friends at http://www.goodvibes.com, sponsors of the First Official Masturbate-a-thon in London on August 5, promoting Safe Sex.
The airport all but came to a standstill when the customs dude got to suitcase number three with all the vibrators in it, like in that Western when the bad guys ride into town. It took all of singer A. Product's Chicago bullshitting skills to talk the band's way outta the mess. But more than that, the looks on the tourists passing us by were priceless, with all these vibrators and their attachments spilling like little hand grenades. One Japanese couple actually threw themselves on the floor, screaming!
Using the desperate ploy of telling the absolute truth, the band were eventually able to make clear that the vibrators are part of a upcoming promotional campaign , heralding the release of the AntiProduct's version of the Beach Boys' classic 'Good Vibrations', and not the weaponry of terrorism either through violence or the sale of black market sex toys. After the band's release it was reported that several of the vibrators had gone walkies, and one female and two male Customs Agents were seen with knowing grins!"

PLUS DEATH
Plus 44, who feature Blink 182's Travis Barker and Mark Hoppus, are to release their debut album in October. It's called 'Little Death'.

KILL DOWN UNDER
Killswitch Engage, Lamb of God and Unearth are going down under. The trio will play shows in Australia from October 17-21.

ZEPPELIN TOP WITH POLITICIANS
Led Zeppelin have the Common touch! Well, a poll has shown that 'Led Zeppelin II' is the most popular album with British MPs. Also highly rated are records from Pink Floyd and Deep Purple.

KARLOFF LEAVES KASABIAN
Kasabian have parted with guitarist/keyboard player Chris Karloff. This is due to 'artistic and creative differences'. The band say they asked him to leave. The new Kasabian album, 'Empire', is due out on September 4.

MELVINS GO SENILE
Melvins are to relaese a new album in early October. It's called 'A Senile Animal', and will be on the Ipecac label.

SLAYER HEAD SOUTH
Slayer have announced that they'll be touring in South America from September 1-17. The band will visit Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Colombia, Venezuela.

MORTIIS BREAKS UP
Mortiis is currently writing and recording the soundtrack for new movie 'Broken'. Said to very violent, it's being directed by Adam Mason, who's worked with Mortiis in the past on his videos.

ZANE MARRIES FANS
Society 1 fans Andrew Goodyear and Amanda Tyler are getting married in Oklahoma City on August 5. The minister performing the ceremony is none other than Matt Zane - of Society 1!

HERESI SIGN DEAL
One-man Swedish black metal project Heresi has signed to the Hydra Head label in America. Heresi remains on Total Holocaust in Europe.

SUB SIN
Philadelphia five-piece Sinch are to release the album 'Subdivisons' on August 26, via their online store @ http://www.sinch.net/store. The album will contain reinterpretations of songs from the band's 2005 album, 'Clearing The Channel'.

CROFEST CANCELLED
Crofest, the 'indoor festival' that was due to happen at the Crobar in London on July 22/23, has been cancelled. This is due to circumstances beyond the organisers' control.

DEATH TO QOTSA
Jesse Keeler, bassist with Death From Above 1979, is expected to be involved with the next Queens! Of The Stone Age album. No news yet on when recording will start.

END OF PLAGUE
Belgian doom crew Thee Plague of Gentlemen have split up. This is because frontman Steve McMillan has been jailed for offences that the rest of the band say they find totally unacceptable.

DEICIDE GUITARIST ARRESTED
Deicide's show in Laredo, Texas apparently hit big problems when the police shut it down after just four numbers. There were said to be difficulties between the band and the promoter. Bottles were thrown, and Deicide guitarist Ralph Santolla was allegedly arrested for throwing a can of Red Bull at a police officer. He has since denied he threw anything.Clearing the Channel
