  • Love Is Real

    Out 27 2009, 4h47 por PrincipeAzul

Feliz Cumpleaños, Alyssa. I wanted to make you a mix of brazen melancholy, since I think our first inklings of friendship were seeded in the mutual appreciation and consumption of this wonderful grayness. For maximum melancholy, I wanted to draw from the genres that have it mastered: twee (mostly sarah records) and new wave/post-punk. This is a mix to wrap around you as you bike through the city, hopefully casting it in a new, askew light that could remind you of me. And our love (our love is real).

  • Colour Me Pop presents Harvey Williams + Julian Henry, Saturday, 29 August, 2009

    Ago 19 2009, 15h36 por string_bean_jen

    Colour Me Pop Presents...

Saturday, 29 August @ The Betsey Trotwood (upstairs), [Farringdon Tube], 8pm

Hello from London! We are now firmly situated in this great city and are ready to put on a show. Who is it, you ask? Why it's none other than the utterly gorgeous, completely spellbinding duo of:

Harvey Williams (Another Sunny Day) and Julian Henry (The Hit Parade)!

Living in Chicago, I couldn't even dream of seeing either of these dazzling singer-songwriters because they were just too far away. Records would have to do. But in June, I had the honour of traveling to Oxford to see them perform together. I hadn't smiled so much for so long. Hearing songs such as 'You Didn't Love Me Then' and 'Horseriding' simply floored me. I also videoed 'You Should All Be Murdered'. Harvey and Julian switched between playing each other's songs and that's what they'll be doing at the dear old Betsey!

Can you believe they have agreed to play a show for us? I barely can! In addition to the magnificence of these two, we and other pop fanatics will be playing tunes before and afterwards. This gig also doubles as my birthday celebration so please come out, grin to the point of bursting when you hear 'The Sun Shines in Gerrard's Cross', have a dance with us, and feel lighter than air as you skip your way home that night.

P.S. The GLORIOUS Another Sunny Day compilation 'London Weekend' [look at that track list!] has just been rereleased by Cherry Red on 17 August. Harvey will have some copies to sell at the gig. You've just got to get one!

  • Summer at the So Tough! So Cute! club

    Jul 7 2009, 12h32 por myhairlooksflat

It's been a while since I last posted so here's some info for all you people interested in dancing and making out to indiepop, twee, c86 and just plain indie

On the 11 July we're doing a post-punk night at So Tough! So Cute!. We saw the very cool BBC documentary on Rough Trade and decided to do another Post-Punk special since the last time turned out to be fantastic. Our guest-DJ will be Noleksellout from the band Dipper and our favorite hangout Tempo. He'll be playing on a double cassette deck and it will be totally awesome! So please come along and dance with us!

Then on the 25 July we're doing a what we're calling No Nouvelle Vague night. We quite frankly hate the cover records Nouvelle Vague has put out. But instead of whining about it we figured we'd put on a night playing all of the original songs and show people how just what great songs Nouvelle Vague has destroyed

22 August Harvey Williams of Another Sunny Day will come and play live with us together with supporting Leaving Mornington Crescent who are doing their debut gig. Harvey will also be djing afterwards and if you've heard him play records before you know that he transforms the dancefloor to a frustrating stomp dancing beast.

As always there's more info, mixes and other stuff up on So Tough! So Cute! blog. You'll also find links to our facebook group and events

  • Mixtape – IV – (C-90) Twee Tape

    Fev 12 2009, 18h34 por SI_Failed

    Here are some sugary treats
    [url=http://www.[spam nofollow=yes] HERE

Sunny Day, they defined the twee sound for me – lofi pop.
-Big Dolly Mixture fan, this may not be their best song but it’s the most twee sounding.
-Heavenly (not the French power metal band), Hearts & Crosses – a fucked up song about date rape, listen to the lyrics and that upbeat keyboard, an awful contrast.

    SIDE A The Classics
Another Sunny Day – Anorak City
Golden Dawn – My Secret World
    The Wake – Angel Treads
    Shop Assistants – Road
The Springfields – Are We Gonna Be Alright
The Marine Girls – In Love
St. Christopher– You Deserve More than a Maybe
Black Tamborine – We Can’t Be Friends
14 Iced Bears – Unhappy Days
Vaselines– The Day I Was a Horse
    Slow Children – East Berlin
Strawberry Story – I Still Want You
Tiger Trap – You & Me
    Cub – New York City
    Go Sailor – Long Distance
    Henry’s Dress – Zero-Zero-Zero
    Heavenly - Hearts & Crosses

    Highlights
-Yokoko is like the Witch in the Hansel and Gretel story, luring children with sweets. The only difference is they don’t eat you, they just leave you addicted and wanting for more. Damn you!
-Marine Research, another one of Amelia Fletcher’s exploration in pop. Talulah Gosh, Heavenly, Marine Research, Tender Trap, etc
-Au Revoir Simone, Night Majestic is a song I can’t stop listening to, the lyrics are about a day at the races, but the keyboard/drum breakdown makes me want to mosh – and to a twee song no less. Reminds me of Jimmy Dewees from The Get Up Kids for some reason...
-I really love Gwenno’s solo stuff, although there hasn’t been anything officially release for sale, I’ve collected the majority of demos and bits and pieces. Really simple lofi pop songs.

    SIDE B The Youngans
    Yokoko – Sally Doesn’t Care
    Anorak Girl– Peter & Katy
    Marine Research - Parallel Horizontal
Those Dancing Days – I Know Where You Live
Language of Flowers – If It's Not You
    Pony Up! – Matthew Modine
Dressy Bessy – Just Once More
Helen Love – Debbie Loves Joey
Vivian Girls – Where Do You Run To
    Lemuria – The Origamists Too
Onion Flavoured Rings – Positively Treat Street
The Incredible Moses Leroy - Fuzzy
    Tender Forever – Heartbroken-Forever
Au Revoir Simone – Night Majestic
    Gwenno - I've been searching

  • My 2008 mix online

    Dez 22 2008, 17h34 por georgethe23rd

    Here goes:

    1.Anorak City - Fucked Up

I always start my end of year compilations with a cover, and this one's an oddball hardcore cracker of a classic Another Sunny Day song.

2.Waving Flags - British Sea Power

My 2nd most listened to track of the year after One Day Like This by Elbow; BSP were my most listened to artist this year, on my 5th most listened to album of the year (their greatly improved “Do You Like Rock Music?”).

3.Ertrinken - Eine Kleine Nacht Musik

In indulging my passion for motorik this year I rather enjoyed EKNM's album.

    4.TocarViva La Vida - Coldplay

I'd like to think of myself as a music snob but my enjoyment of Coldplay this year rather spoils that image. The new album's good, live they're great, and this is great.

5.TocarA Relatively Famous Victory - Ballboy

Ballboy were the highlight of the superb Indietracks festival (where I also saw The Good Natured, Kabeedies and the Wave Pictures, below). They played this at sundown, outside on a beautiful Summer evening, and it was perfect.

6.TocarHow Can I Believe In You? - The Good Natured

A lovely Reading artist who I saw live at Indietracks inside a tiny million-degrees-hot tin church.

    7.Lovely Allen - Holy Fuck

My 4th most listened to track of the year. Really great live.

    8.Pussyfooting - Fujiya & Miyagi

Takka takka takka takka uh! A fun 2008 discovery, further feeding my motorik habit.

    9.Heavy Water - Foals

Foals in concert was too full of student wankers chatting and texting, but the album's good and this one really starts getting somewhere at the end.

    10.Lost Coastlines - Okkervil River

My 10th most listened to artist of the year. The band have been a great musical discovery for me, ever since I got hooked by hearing John Allyn Smith Sails.

11.The Sun Smells Too Loud - Mogwai

    12.TocarWaterfall - James

My 10th most listened to track of the year. I'm not a massive James fan, and have no wish to buy the new album, but this song's superb.

13.Do The Indie Kid - MJ Hibbett

Hopelessly hooked by the video, even my young daughters think this indie Agadoo is tops.

14.Dyed In The Wool - The Young Knives

From “Superabundance”, my 7th most listened to album of the year. Some say their new songs aren't as good as their older more spiky ones, but this is classic indie guitar stuff.

    15.Palindromes - The Kabeedies

Another Indietracks fave, this song is from the tiny band's greatly titled, palindromic, Ten Animals I Slam In A Net EP.

16.Strange Fruit For David - The Wave Pictures

The Wave Pictures are my greatest musical discovery of the year, my 4th most listened to artist of the year, and their “Instant Coffee Baby” album is my most listened to in the last 12 months. Strange Fruit... is my 6th most listened to track of the year, and like most of their work has overwrought Morrissey-esque vocals and phenomenally talented instrumentalists. Of course it helps they're from nearby Wymeswold too.

    17.Friends Of Ours - Elbow

My 5th most listened to artist this year, and “The Seldom Seen Kid” is my 2nd most listened to album.

    18.The Rip - Portishead

Spellbinding, particularly the instrumental at the end.

Honorary mentions for Glasvegas and Hot Chip, who were also good this year and who I saw live (twice for Glasvegas). I enjoyed The Fall and Primal Scream live too.
