Here goes:
1.
Anorak City -
Fucked Up
I always start my end of year compilations with a cover, and this one's an oddball hardcore cracker of a classic
Another Sunny Day song.
2.
Waving Flags -
British Sea Power
My 2nd most listened to track of the year after One Day Like This by
Elbow; BSP were my most listened to artist this year, on my 5th most listened to album of the year (their greatly improved “Do You Like Rock Music?”).
3.
Ertrinken -
Eine Kleine Nacht Musik
In indulging my passion for
motorik this year I rather enjoyed EKNM's album.
4.
Viva La Vida -
Coldplay
I'd like to think of myself as a music snob but my enjoyment of Coldplay this year rather spoils that image. The new album's good, live they're great, and this is great.
5.
A Relatively Famous Victory -
Ballboy
Ballboy were the highlight of the superb Indietracks festival (where I also saw The Good Natured, Kabeedies and the Wave Pictures, below). They played this at sundown, outside on a beautiful Summer evening, and it was perfect.
6.
How Can I Believe In You? -
The Good Natured
A lovely Reading artist who I saw live at Indietracks inside a tiny million-degrees-hot tin church.
7.
Lovely Allen -
Holy Fuck
My 4th most listened to track of the year. Really great live.
8.
Pussyfooting -
Fujiya & Miyagi
Takka takka takka takka uh! A fun 2008 discovery, further feeding my motorik habit.
9.
Heavy Water -
Foals
Foals in concert was too full of student wankers chatting and texting, but the album's good and this one really starts getting somewhere at the end.
10.
Lost Coastlines -
Okkervil River
My 10th most listened to artist of the year. The band have been a great musical discovery for me, ever since I got hooked by hearing
John Allyn Smith Sails.
11.
The Sun Smells Too Loud -
Mogwai
12.
Waterfall -
James
My 10th most listened to track of the year. I'm not a massive James fan, and have no wish to buy the new album, but this song's superb.
13.
Do The Indie Kid -
MJ Hibbett
Hopelessly hooked by the
video, even my young daughters think this indie Agadoo is tops.
14.
Dyed In The Wool -
The Young Knives
From “Superabundance”, my 7th most listened to album of the year. Some say their new songs aren't as good as their older more spiky ones, but this is classic indie guitar stuff.
15.
Palindromes -
The Kabeedies
Another Indietracks fave, this song is from the tiny band's greatly titled, palindromic, Ten Animals I Slam In A Net EP.
16.
Strange Fruit For David -
The Wave Pictures
The Wave Pictures are my greatest musical discovery of the year, my 4th most listened to artist of the year, and their “Instant Coffee Baby” album is my most listened to in the last 12 months. Strange Fruit... is my 6th most listened to track of the year, and like most of their work has overwrought
Morrissey-esque vocals and phenomenally talented instrumentalists. Of course it helps they're from nearby Wymeswold too.
17.
Friends Of Ours -
Elbow
My 5th most listened to artist this year, and “The Seldom Seen Kid” is my 2nd most listened to album.
18.
The Rip -
Portishead
Spellbinding, particularly the instrumental at the end.
Honorary mentions for
Glasvegas and
Hot Chip, who were also good this year and who I saw live (twice for Glasvegas). I enjoyed
The Fall and
Primal Scream live too.
