  • 2008: Top 20 Albums

    Jan 10 2009, 20h32 por DreadfulHero

    20. Beck - Modern Guilt
By a simple calculation, this should've been a Beck album I didn't like. Completely disregarding his earliest few albums, I've have flip-flopped between Beck albums from 1998 on. Mutations? Yep. Midnite Vultures? No. Sea Change? Heck, yeah. Guero? Meh. The Information? Surprisingly, yes (as a complete body of work, at least). So, see... I shouldn't have been a fan of Modern Guilt. And at first I wasn't. But after a number of spins, a lot of the songs started to grow on me and I realized that this was a solid album. The approach Beck took is a bit different (particularly after the last album, which admittedly had a bit too much filler), and presented a nice, little album. Musically, Beck seemed to be channeling some classic 60s tunes (or at least much of the album has sort of a vintage feel) for much of the album, and when that sort of thing is done right it can be pretty great. There are a few small stumbles, which only appear to be bigger because of the length of the LP, but overall Beck delivered a short and sweet body of work here.

    19. Sleepercar - West Texas
Sparta's Jim Ward's "alt-country" side project really doesn't focus too much on the country. Sure, it has its big share of twangy moments, but maybe because one knows it's Sparta's lead singer who used to be in At the Drive-In that it doesn't really seem completely saturated in country music. Think more along the lines of Bright Eyes ("End of a Year") or a straightforward My Morning Jacket song. Regardless of what sort of label you put on the music, it's all very well put together. Admittedly I'm not a big Sparta fan, so it might upset some fans if I told them to their face that I enjoyed this album more than any of their albums. But there you have it: Sleepercar is better than Sparta.

    18. The Gutter Twins - Saturnalia
My interest in this album steemed from Mark Lanegan's involvement. His gruff vocals always intrigued me on Queens of the Stone Age's music (not much of a fan of any of his solo work or with Screaming Trees). As it turns out, his pairing with Greg Dulli of Afghan Whigs/Twilight Singers is a match made in heaven, despite that much of the music sounds like it comes from somewhere far darker. Honestly, the music they've done together here probably appeals to the side of me that enjoys Queens of the Stone Age for the very same reason. But sometimes pairings like this don't always work. Sometimes the idea is better the result. Thankfully, that is not the case here.

    17. Nada Surf - Lucky
I've held a special place in my heart for Nada Surf since the release of their stellar 2002 album Let Go. Its poppy melacholy rock tunes were unmatched. That love affair continued with the release of The Weight is a Gift, which took me longer to warm to, but resulted in some of the finest moments of the band's career ("Do It Again" was my favorite song of that year), even if a couple songs fell flat. Lucky might be the first album that begins the slide down the slippery slope. It just seems like Nada Surf is getting a tad too comfortable in the role that people expect. It would be nice to see them pull some surprises, and while there are times I like to play it on the safe side (just look at my list from last year!), I guess I was just hoping for a little bit more from Nada Surf. I don't want to get completely down on the album though. After all, it is my #17 pick! It certainly has its moments of sheer excellence ("See These Bones"), beauty (the end of "Weightless"), and for good measure they decided to throw in a more ambitious tune like the dark "The Fox," which is something I'd like to see more from the band. In the end, Lucky proves that the tried and true method works, but you also catch a glimpse that's there might be something more there, too. Here's hoping.

    16. Andy Yorke - Simple
I don't really want to have the focus of this entry be who Andy Yorke is related to. I suppose it is inevitable though. But Thom Yorke's brother offers a far more sensible piece of work than his brother has in a long time. What it comes down to though is that Andy Yorke is clearly the singer/songwriter type, who released a fantastic singer/songwriter album this year. His vocals are rich and warm, the production is clear, and much of the music is deceivingly full sounding. In other words, this might be the sort of album Thom Yorke might make if he wasn't so set on being always so out there and weird all the time. That might be unfair to both parties, but I'm glad we have Andy Yorke to release this type of an album.

    15. Coldplay - Viva La Vida
Ah, yes. Coldplay! Perhaps the biggest band in the world that makes millions cheer and just as many vomit. Remember the simpler days of "Yellow" though, when the song was big but the band wasn't. Those songs were good, they were why I became a fan, and that's what I've held on to all these years. After the release of X&Y, I got a little disillusioned myself. Coldplay definitely started to believe they were the biggest band in the world by that point, and the music started to suffer. I reluctantly looked forward to this album, and despite knocks against it from music elistists and snobs who have an account on blogspot.com, I really enjoyed it much more than I thought I would. It's not wildly different than people who don't know better say it is, but it is just different enough that it doesn't quite feel like they're doing the same old thing to me (like it felt they were doing on X&Y). And for me, that's enough.

    14. Starflyer 59 - Dial M
Despite being the one and only full-on Christian act I like, Starflyer 59's dreary and dreamy rock/pop can still be quite hit-and-miss, and Jason Martin and company's last album, My Island, failed to impress me much. Like many artists who have been around awhile (heck, look at what I said about Nada Surf), it seemed like maybe their/his music was getting a bit too comfortable. Thankfully, Dial M feels much more inspired than the last album. While most of the album coasts along without ever laying out any hugely astounding moments, it does a very good job when it's all played out and after I've finished listening to it I sometimes find myself thinking I could listen to it again right away. Starflyer's better music has always had that effect on me. The music might not always be easy to get into either (this one took a couple listens for me to start to appreciate it), but once it does the rewards are everlasting.

    13. Arizona - Glowing Bird
Arizona came to my attention last year and have seen been one of the more pleasant bands to listen to since the summer of 2007. If you've read anything I've ever said about them in the past, you will know that my love for their song "Splintering" is nearly unmatched. Just how much that song elevates the rest of their last album, Welcome Back Dear Children, is amazing. However, it's generally not the type of song the band is known for (if only more people knew about them!), and generally they stay on that more familiar road on Glowing Bird. No big rocking numbers to be found this time out (except the end of "You Were Right"), but "Splintering" and the other few songs like it on the last album were a bit of a fluke anyway. But with pleasant vocals, interesting arrangements, and use of unconventional instruments (a guzheng?), Arizona deliver yet another unique listening experience.

    12. Guillemots - Red
Guillemots' Red is sure to be the black sheep on my list this year. I'm not wholly convinced Guillemots know what type of band they want to be. On the first four songs alone they ape Muse, Justin Timberlake, any typical modern day Britpop-rocker you might want to name, and Wham!. It definitely makes for an interesting album, even if there might be some out there that think it's just too much. Never one to shy away from bombast and pomp, what Guillemots aimed to do with this album intriguing me way much more than it confused or alienated me. A lot of people might not have thought it worked very well, but I thought it was really fun to listen to.

    11. What Made Milwaukee Famous - What Doesn't Kill Us
The only disappointment found in What Made Milwaukee Famous' follow-up to their outstanding debut was the fact that it took nearly four years for them to release an album that wasn't nearly as varied as that debut. Musically, Trying to Never Catch Up was all over the map, but it still all worked and felt far more cohesive than most albums that scattered do. The musical direction is on a far clearer path this time out, as WMMF sticks far closer to sounding like Spoon than they did on their debut even though that's when the accusations started. Quite a few tunes didn't adhere to the formula then, but this time more seem follow it. Sure, there is one exception with "Resistance St." which is far more aggressive than the other eleven songs on the album. Still, if you're going to follow a proven formula, follow one that works. WMMF write some really catchy tunes that always seem to stick with me, and a few songs transcend just plain catchiness and leave an actual emotionally-punched impact.

    10. Earlimart - Hymn and Her
Less than a year after releasing the beautifully lush Mentor Tormentor, Earlimart released an album to prove that extra time to write and record albums can be overrated sometimes. The duo of Aaron Espinoza and Ariana Murray don't offer anything new here really. Many of the songs could've possibly been pulled straight from Mentor Tormentor's recording sessions and audiences wouldn't have been the wiser. These songs don't just feel like throwaway tracks, and with a shorter tracklist and running time, Hymn and Her is far more concise. It could even be a better album. While it doesn't reach such great heights like its predecessor did with "Happy Alone," "Answers and Questions," or "Don't Think About Me," it cut down a lot on the filler, too. That probably makes it a more engaging album. Regardless, Aaron and Ariana continue to impress, and as long as they keep making such pleasant music like this I certainly would welcome another album in 2009.

    9. Copeland - You Are My Sunshine
If you go two entries back in my last.fm journal, you will see me noting that there wasn't a single music discovery for me this year that wasn't a new band. That was only half-right though, as I became a big fan of Copeland's music well over two years after first listening to them. I always found them decent enough, but a recent opportunity arose to see them live, and I decided to give their music a better shot at becoming something I truly really enjoyed (besides "The Last Time He Saw Dorie"). And it worked! I fell in love with their 2006 album Eat Sleep Repeat, and I eagerly awaited the concert and this album. Aaron Marsh remains the best part of the band, as his somewhat effeminate vocals aren't completely degrading to the male gender, and aren't quite as whiny as many of his counterparts in the genre you might lump him in with come across. He sings with such passion and emotion that you can't help but sing along. And while Copeland might not really be keen on making fast rock numbers anymore, they do seem to be more and more convinced they should be making beautifully heartfelt music. It's what those most of those supposed counterparts don't have the nerve, ambition, or straight-up talent to do.

    8. Paper Rival - Dialog
R.I.P., Paper Rival. After a couple of EPs and one LP, you will be missed. It's a shame you had to be a casualty of the record industry recently. You delivered one of the best debut albums of 2008, even if your lead singer felt somewhat disillusioned by its release. Like Copeland and Straylight Run and Brand New, you transcend the genre you might be put in by some people by proving there are some people out there willing to take some chances and deliver something unique to their targeted audience. Your album delivered straight-up rockers like "Are We Brothers?" and "Swimmer King," that might deceivingly have gotten you pegged as "another one of those type of bands" when in reality there was clearly something far more special going on. And then you could turn around and deliver a swaying lullaby like "Cassandra," and prove that growing up in Tennessee gave your even more to offer. Here's hoping you guys continue to make music in your separate directions, because talent like yours would surely be wasted if it isn't heard by people in the years to come.

    7. The Hush Sound - Goodbye Blues
The Hush Sound's last album was sort of an overlooked gem of 2006. I really enjoyed it, but the numbers of listens I gave the band never really reflected it. Luckily, the band might've benefitted from an earlier release this year with the solidly entertaining Goodbye Blues. Much like the similar Straylight Run, the Hush Sound just gets better with each subsequent album. While they haven't yet quite delivered their masterpiece, it certainly wouldn't surprise me if they do someday. While lead singing duties were previously split between Bob Morris and Greta Salpeter, Greta takes over on most of the songs this time. Normally I wouldn't applaud such a move, but her capabilities as a singer have matured so greatly that it really was the best move the band could make. And while her strengths as a singer might overshadow Bob Morris so much more on this album, his songs are solidly fun to listen to in their own right. And with short and sweet songs that are instantly infectious, this album is one of the easiest to listen to repeatedly... and one of the best.

    6. Lovedrug - The Sucker Punch Show
Lovedrug better watch out, because they just might become one of my favorite bands. Three albums released, three albums that make it into my top 10 for the year in which each was released. The year and a half turnaround between releases was a pleasant surprise this year. Lovedrug shifted slightly in musical direction on this album, sounding far more aggressive and dirtier than they used to, resulting in a weird Muse meets Queens of the Stone Age concoction. Even on the more lighter songs, lead singer Michael Shepard is spouting lines like "You're a slut." What happened, Michael? Still, no Lovedrug release would be complete without singing about angels or their fallen counterparts, and Shepard continues to stay focused on his favorite subject on a song here and there. And while this album doesn't really have these great huge sprawling rock epics like "Black Out" or "Pushing the Shine," it lacks any filler that the previous two albums had as well. That makes all three albums pretty much even to me, which is a rare feat to achieve for a band (and one that has changed line-ups a few times to boot).

    5. My Morning Jacket - Evil Urges
Everytime I see Evil Urges in my #5 spot, I have to wonder why it's there. It just doesn't seem like top 5 material to me. But once I erase the weird and completely out-of-place genre exercise that is "Highly Suspicious," I really didn't enjoy much else more than this album. It might not be as adventurous as their 2005 album, Z, or as sprawling and indebted to Neil Young as everything else prior. But I think it had me hooked while I was listening to it during a sunset in an unfamiliar place. It just sounded so perfect for that moment. Ever since then I've been completely sold, and am one to think it really doesn't sound that different for the band. It's just more streamlined and accessible than anything they've ever done. But there's some real gems on this album, mostly found in their ballads, which surprisingly makes up nearly half of the album.

    4. Weezer - Weezer (The Red Album - Deluxe Version)
What a whirlwind ride it's been being a Weezer fan in the 21st century, even if one such as myself became a fan in 2001. After being lambasted by pretty much everyone for Make Believe, you would think that it was all over for the band. If the band wasn't going to quit, than everyone would quit on them (I actually liked most of it though). And yet, Weezer soldiered on and took three years to release what is definitely the best album they have released this decade. But is that saying much of anything? Absolutely. After being written off with the release of Make Believe, it seems like Weezer are finally free of having to live up to something. This album is a complete abomination compared to their 90s work, as is most of their work from the 2000s. But what matters the most now is that it just doesn't matter anymore. And Weezer seems to have fully embraced this fact, even when they hit close to Blue/Pink territory with songs like "Dreamin'" or "Pig" (on the deluxe version, which is definitely the only version of this album to listen to). This is the only album Weezer could've made at this point in time. Unlike the other post-2000 albums, they couldn't have done anything other than this. And that's what makes it nearly flawless.

    3. Elbow - The Seldom Seen Kid
What is easiest the biggest surprise on my list is that Elbow, a band I had not given much consideration of since the first half of 2006, managed to release my third favorite album of 2008. I enjoyed their last album, 2005's Leaders of the Free World quite a bit when it was first released here in the U.S., but I quickly forgot about it and wrote them off as a band who released one album (out of three) that I sort of enjoyed but probably wouldn't follow any further. But the band was definitely at the top of their game on this one, making a beautiful album full of sprawling, spacial aural journeys that wrap around Guy Garvey's poetic words, which make the album the best lyrical one of the year. They might get lumped in with bands like Coldplay, or Snow Patrol, or Keane, or [insert name here], but Elbow showed they are much, much deeper than all of those bands put together. They are a great band that put out the album of their career (so far) in 2008.

    2. Blood Red Shoes - Box of Secrets
Say hello to the highest charting debut album I've had yet! What began as a random click of a link to an illegal download of their debut album has lead this to this: my #2 spot on this year's list. At first I didn't think much of what I was hearing. After three songs, I deleted the album from my hard drive, only to find it still saved in my temp folder. I decided to give them another shot, and it became one of the best decisions I made regarding music this year. What makes this album so great? Perhaps it's the charming British boy/girl vocals, or the propulsive guitar and drum work ("I Wish I Was Someone Better," "It's Getting Boring by the Sea"). Or the relentless energy that each song exudes. Whatever it is, Laura-Mary Carter and Steven Ansell have it, and together they create a sound bigger than any duo in rock music does. Sure, it gets a little repetitious ("ADHD"), but when an album is rocking this hard, should we really care?

    1. The Stills – Oceans Will Rise
What began as my most anticipated album of 2008 ends the year at my #1 spot. Unlike a lot of fans of the band, I didn’t hate the Stills’ last album (I ranked it #7 out of 15 notable releases in ‘06), but I did take certain issues with some of the choices the band made for the album (Dave Hamelin taking lead for most of the album, for instance). Luckily, the Stills seemed to have heard fans’ overall disappointments and for the most part ditched the sound they were going for on that album, and returned to the brooding, more serious sounds found on their magnificent debut. While this album doesn’t quite reach that level of greatness, it’s all definitely in the same vein. It’s just bigger and shinier. So what happens when one of my favorite bands releases an album that doesn’t disappoint in any real significant way and has some really, really great songs found on it? It becomes my #1 pick of the year. It might not be all that surprising, considering that it was was my most anticipated. But it was the most satisfying release of the year for me.

  • rearviewmirror: Music in 2008

    Dez 28 2008, 11h31 por brushfired

Hey everyone, it's coming close to the end of 2008 and (like many others), I'd like to share MY favorite albums that came out of this year:

    TOP 30

    1. For Emma, Forever Ago - Bon Iver
Key Tunes: Re: Stacks, Flume, Blindsided and the rest of the album

    or

I think this album is just awesome from start to end. It is a conceptual album and the music is incredibly driven, soulful, raw, emotive, dark, haunting, desolate, and undeniably beautiful. Justin's lyrics are bizaare, poetic, abstract, deep and heartbreakingly intense in the best way imaginable - there's enough audible intention behind them.
I will admit, the very first time I heard him sing; I was a little thrown off by his style and use of falsetto - It took me about two listens before I was fully in love.
Despite of its loneliness atmosphere - surprisingly, it never leaves me feeling sad, somehow, almost always uplifted...

    Re: Stacks
    :
"there's a black crow sitting across from me; his wiry legs are crossed
and he's dangling my keys he even fakes a toss
    whatever could it be
that has brought me to this loss?"

This music heals. I know that these songs are here to stay.

    2. The Seldom Seen Kid - Elbow
Key Tunes: TocarMirrorball, TocarThe Loneliness of a Tower Crane Driver, TocarOne Day Like This

I’m so glad I discovered this band! This seldom seen kid is musically so colourful + Guy’s voice is just so incredibly gorgeous + my this year‘s holiday anthem, One Day Like This = perfectness.

    "what made me
    behave that way?
    using words
    I never say
    I can only think
    it must be love
    oh, anyway
    it's looking
    like a beautiful day

    so throw
    those curtains wide
    one day like this
    a year'd see me right"

    3. Virginia EP - The National
Key Tunes: Without Permission, Santa Clara, About today (Live)

The DVD "A Skin, A Night" (which is included) is slightly pretentious (because it’s very artsy captured) when they are a band crying out for a simple live DVD. I just hope it will be soon…

    4. Tabarly - Yann Tiersen
Key Tunes: TocarLa Longue Route, TocarAu Dessous Du Volcan, Tocar8 Mm

A minimalistic journey to another world, a better world. Yann never fails and this ablum only prove this statement. Trés bien monsieur Tiersen, merci encore une fois.

    5. Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust - Sigur Rós
Key Tunes: Festival, Inní mér syngur vitleysingur, Fljótavík

Their most joyful record to date. Yes it is, and somehow, it still works. At least for me.

    6. Modern Guilt - Beck
Key Tunes: TocarModern Guilt, TocarProfanity Prayers, TocarChemtrails

The sound of this album is totally great, many genres are mixed up together which make this record even more revolutionary – meant not only for Beck ;)

    7. Elephants...Teeth Sinking Into Heart - Rachael Yamagata
Key Tunes: Elephants, Sunday Afternoon, Sidedish Friend

I loved her first album very much until this record came out, it’s even better and she has just so amazing voice here…

    8. Sleep Through The Static - Jack Johnson
Key Tunes: TocarAll At Once, TocarWhat You Thought You Need, TocarGo On

It is a quite different from previous albums but after a few listens I realized it’s a very good album in its own, special way. I still love On and On the most, though. Jack is just such a good guy and his eco-concerts are very inspirational, no doubt about it … From now on everybody should go green! :)

    All At Once
    :
    "all at once,
    the world can overwhelm me
there's almost nothing that you could tell me
    that could ease my mind

    we keep asking ourselves
    are we really strong enough?
    there's so many things
that we got too proud of"

    9. Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends + Prospekt's March EP - Coldplay
Key Tunes: TocarGlass Of Water, Lovers In Japan/Reign Of Love, TocarStrawberry Swing

    and

Yes, this album was/is maybe one of this years‘ big hype but it is made with sense of musical versatility, and it works very well – Eno‘s hands are very visible here. And who just doesn’t love the melody of Joe Satriani’s Viva La Vida? :D

    TocarDeath And All His Friends
    :
    "all winter we got carried
    away over on the rooftops
    let's get married
    all summer we just hurried
so come over, just be patient, and don't worry"

    10. Ode To J. Smith - Travis
Key Tunes: Song To Self, Before You Were Young, Broken Mirror

It is maybe short record but who cares, they rock! Their best album since The Boy With No Name, for sure ;)

    11. You & Me - The Walkmen
Key Tunes: In The New Year, Red Moon, I Lost You

Atmospherical, great song-writing. It’s just fair playing. Really worth a listen.

    12. Rook - Shearwater
Key Tunes: On The Death Of The Waters, The Snow Leopard, Home Life

Side project of some members of Okkervil River and I must say I like this even more…

    13. Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes
Key Tunes: White Winter Hymnal, Blue Ridge Mountains, Tiger Mountain Peasant Song

…I was following the, I was following the, I was following the, I was following the, I was following the, I was following the, I was following the, I was following the, I was following the pack…

    14. Gossip in the Grain - Ray LaMontagne
Key Tunes: TocarI Still Care for You, TocarA Falling Through, TocarGossip in the Grain

Ray‘s third album. I don’t like hearing of some gossips said about anyone but these gossips placed in the grain sound very good to me ;) Till The Sun Turns Black is still my favourite album, though.

    15. This Will Destroy You - This Will Destroy You
Key Tunes: A Three Legged Workhorse, TocarThreads, The Mighty Rio Grande

Quiet. Loud. Slow. Fast. = simple formula

    16. Pass It Around - Donavon Frankenreiter
Key Tunes: pass it around, Your Heart, Sing A Song

In Donavon’s third album, he finally found himself. That means this is the chillest record this year for me. You can imagine yourself lying on the beach, drinking mojito and enjoying time with your friends during listening to this album. It always puts you in the good mood no matter what the weather is like ;)

    Life, Love & Laughter
    :
"I’m lookin for life, love and laughter
everything in between and what happens after
    what happens after? "

    17. Oracular Spectacular - MGMT
Key Tunes: TocarTime to Pretend, TocarKids, TocarThe Youth

First half of this album is so good, the second isn’t just so much creative.

    18. Accelerate - R.E.M.
Key Tunes: Hollow Man, Until the Day Is Done, Horse to Water

I didn’t expect such a good album! It rocks, it’s loaded with fresh energy and it’s short, haha! There’s no reason to not like this record.

    19. Dig Out Your Soul - Oasis
Key Tunes: I'm Outta Time, Falling Down, The Shock Of The Lightning

I didn’t dig out my soul after listening this record but I can say Gallaghers are still able to write some good songs and that’s good thing, you know J.

    20. In The Ever - Mason Jennings
Key Tunes: TocarI Love You and Buddha Too, TocarHow Deep Is That River, TocarSoldier Boy

I Love You And Buddha Too is one of my favourite songs of 2008, it’s catchy, very simple tune with quite provocative lyrics but I really like it, maybe because I feel it in similar way like Mason along with Jack sings.

    "why do some people say
that there is just one way
to love you, god, and come to you?
we are all a part of you

    you are un-nameable
    you are unknowable
    all we have is metaphor
that‘s what time and space are for"

    21. Glasvegas - Glasvegas
Key Tunes: TocarGeraldine, TocarIce Cream Van, TocarIt's My Own Cheating Heart That Makes Me Cry

Superb debut album! They’re like more heavier and happier The Twilight Sad. Scottish accent for the win!

    22. Here It Never Snowed Afterwards It Did EP - The Twilight Sad
Key Tunes: TocarSome Things Last a Long Time, Here, It Never Snowed. Afterwards It Did., And She Would Darken The Memory (Alternate Version)

Alternate versions of their debut album + 2 "new" songs, Some Things Last A Long Time is really heartbreaking cover. Nice EP.

    23. Oh! Mighty Engine - Neil Halstead
Key Tunes: TocarA Gentle Heart, TocarLittle Twig, TocarElevenses

If you like Iron & Wine or Kings of Convenience, you’ll pobably love this CD. Great record to chill out to.

    24. Third - Portishead
Key Tunes: The Rip, TocarDeep Water, TocarSmall

I know you’ve already heard it. Solid return.

    25. Dark Shades of Blue - Xavier Rudd
    Key Tunes: Home, Shiver, GUKU

More heavier, atmospherical and psychedelic. It seems to me that Xavier wanted to capture his concert performances to this record and he did it very well.
Home is one of the best songs in 2008 according to my ears.

"places we roam and people we meet
some connections are strong and some a little weak
one or two or three or four or maybe five or six or more

    I recognize my health
the things that I have been dealt
    places that I've roamed
feelings I've had and things that I know
    home, I'm home."

    26. Seventh Three - Goldfrapp
Key Tunes: TocarA&E, TocarLittle Bird, TocarCaravan Girl

Pretty, dreamy, natural album full of nice spring melodies.

    27. Consolers of the Lonely – The Raconteurs
Key Tunes: Many Shades of Black, Five on the Five, You Don't Understand Me

Jack White and his rock invasion, enough likeable to turn volume on the highest level.

    28. Saturday = Youth - M83
Key Tunes: TocarSkin Of The Night, TocarCouleurs, TocarKim & Jessie

It was just like that: good, good, hmm, solid, great!

    29. Forth - The Verve
Key Tunes: TocarJudas, TocarRather Be, TocarLove Is Noise

Great comeback. Richard still has the magic in his voice.

    30. Hello - Tristan Prettyman
Key Tunes: TocarWar Out Of Peace, TocarDon't Work Yourself Up, TocarEcho

Turning into making radio popfolk songs might not be the right thing but if you can do it with some clever and smart melodies and lyrics, why not? :)
She’s pretty, she has wonderful voice + her guitar and surfing skills. What a great combination! ;)

    Top CZ/SK records:

Richard Müller a Milan Lasica - Müller spieva Lasicu, Lasica spieva Müllera, Lasica a Müller spievaju Filipa
Nej kusy: Život, Do batôžka, Noc

Mňága a Žďorp - Na stanici polární

Dan Bárta a Illustratosphere - Animage
Nej kusy: Dech, Jesus Online, Naokoland (Kalunga Nekuhameeke, Charly)

Klasický Bárta, příjemné míšení různých stylů, hraní si s hlasem a vzhledem k tomu, že to tu u nás takhle podobně dělá málokdo, tak to asi ještě dlouho bude fungovat.

Tata Bojs & Ahn Trio - Smetana
Nej kusy: Šťastnější, Kudu Aditsuh, Jaro

Ke smetaně nemám moc co psát, prostě to byl skvělý nápad, který se podařilo zrealizovat na jedničku. Takhle by se měly dělat bestofky.
"Yes, it was very nice I think."

    Best Video Award:

    Goldfrapp - TocarCaravan Girl

Simple but beautifully captured video and it fits the song very well I think. I like it a lot.

For me, it's been a great year for music!
Thanks for reading my list and belatedly, happy holidays everyone :)

  • greenbelt festival 2008/ my last three months listening

    Ago 27 2008, 10h16 por stevethack

    Fri 22 Aug – Greenbelt Festival 2008

having listened to many of the bands playing this years greenbelt fest the plan is to post my last three month chart here (given when i was away this actually covers the full 11 weeks from me returning from the greenbelt iona retreat to my arrival at the festival) then slowly edit it with comments about the bands that did play the fest. prob a big job so count this journal entry as a work in progress.

1 Levellers 119(no link to greenbelt, well Seth lakeman's brother Sean produced their new album and i can find half a dozen other tenuous links)

    2 Michael Franti & Spearhead 82
headlined friday night, wow. maybe not as impressive as when he played two years back and so far i do think i prefer Yell fire to his new album.

    2 Duke Special 82
ok joint second for the duke, not at the festival this year but has been most years (once we get out of my top ten i'll delete the bands who weren't on the gb08 line up)
    4 Rachel Taylor-Beales 77
Ok despite her new album being fantastic and her getting a great response to her greenbelt 07 set somehow Rachel wasn't booked this year. a terrible oversight and injustice in my opinion.

    5 Beth Rowley 38
Beth played what i heard was a blinding set on mainstage sunday afternoon (and given the size of the crowds for much of sunday's bill think a good case could have been made for giving beth a headlining slot) personally and despite Beth coming in my top five artists for the last 3 months i missed her set. (thats greenbelt for you) i would have been up in centaur for the larry norman tribute, did catch Beth in last orders doing two songs which were great.

    6 Seth Lakeman 34
someone else i missed at greenbelt this year , went to see Franti's film and was a bit tiredafter so didn't even stop around for the last half hour of Lakeman's set. still hoping i might catch him up her in leeds.

    7 Miriam Jones 29
made it into the performance cafe and saw her set. fantastic, two more tracks in last orders that night (and i believe she's been in the night before as well after i'd gone to bed) including "i am one" which i'd been disapointed had been missed from the performance cafe set. bought her first cd and now wishing i'd bought the second one two. new ep coming soon apparently.
    8 Brian Houston 26
kept intending to catch this man, did manage to pick up an old live cd of his cheap.
performance cafe was just too full, it needs maybe 6 to 10 less table and a 100 or so more chairs. even then acts the size of Brian could really really do with a bigger venue.
    9 MxPx 24
not sure why i listened to so many mxpx tracks, certainly had no intention of seeing them at greenbelt. to be honest it seemed whenever i was listening to the greenbelt event radio on last it would play an mxpx track every time i nipped out of the room.
    10 Show of Hands 23
not played greenbelt for too many years. someone must get them back.
    10 Utah Phillips 23
sadly Utah passed away this year but something of this man's spirit does live on in patches of greenbelt, real shame greenbelt never booked him.

ok from now on bands with no gb 08 link are deleted (well except a few who i think really should have been booked)

    12 Michael Franti 21
he keeps cropping up on this list.
    14 Iain Archer 20
greenbelt set advertised as and friends, should really have been "and usual musicians he turns up with plus a few family members he wanted to blag free tickets for" still fantastic set. nice little seminar thing with stockie on the friday too despite me choosing to sit at a point where we could only hear half of it.

    17 Andy Yorke 16
great little set in the performance cafe, man deserves a bigger audience, glad i bought his CD before the fest as not available on site , ICC don't stock stuff on major labels (too low a profit margin it seems) for big name artists this is no big loss for folks like Andy it is doing a great disservice to both him and greenbelt punters.

    20 Frank Black 15
Ok never was any real chance of greenbelt booking frank but he does a) have Charlie norman (larry's bro) as part of his band and b) do a mean cover of six sixty six

    23 Martyn Joseph 13
nice little set from Martyn. not given half as much time in the program as he should have been (any idiot could tell it was going to overrun and there was enough time after that the comedians on after could have been booked for slots an hour later, as it was with overruns and time to empty venues etc they ended up on at later times anyway Delsio chiponda ended up with a much smaller adience then he had last year as a result of this. sorry supposed to be writting about music not comedy and errors by whoever compiled the program. MJ's anyway great just seen him twice since the last greenbelt so nothing too unexpected.
    24 Will Tang 12
Ok thats 12 listens before the fest which sounded great sadly live he didn't really do much for me. all nice but nothing more than that. maybe just the mood i was in.
    24 Abram Wilson 12

performed as part of Roll Jordan Roll, actaully quite liked some of his solo stuff, cant really say same for roll jordan roll. quality wise you couldn't fault it but really not my thing and judging by the size of the crowd most greenbelters were thinking the same way as me. great to have on greenbelt mainstage but really didn't justify a headline slot.

    28 Michael Franti & Spearhead 11
third appearance on the list this time due an extra space in the band name (last.fm software can be very picky at times)
    28 Danny Cope 11
good little set from Danny, impressed. given he is local am hoping might grab a chance to catch him again sometime soon.
    32 Emmanuel Jal 10
great to have Jal back at greenbelt, smaller crowd than he deserved (at least for the first half of his set, fortunatly that meant most folks missing the big sound problems)) due in part to so many greenbelters ariving late on the friday and also due to the weird way the firday mainstage line up was put together (fans of either [dweeb] or starfield were unlikly to be staying around for Jal.

    32 1 Giant Leap 10
not at this years fest but Jamie Catto was and i intentended to both catch his accoustic set and to see the 1 giant leap film, event i was in overran so missed jamie and after two bad experiences of the film venue wasn't going to risk a third (the room didnt work, the venue manager needed tech support etc)
    32 Maggi Dawn 10
not at this years fest but did write a nice bit in the program
    32 Cathy Burton 10
didn't catch cathy and not sure why.
    32 Juliet Turner 10
couldn't get into the tent but watched from outside sounded great, new cd sold out before i got chance to part with my cash though.
    32 Gareth Davies-Jones 10
intended to catch him in the end didn't work out that way. same him do one track with others in the Norman tribute.
    32 Kashee Opeiah 10
dont think i was realy intending to catch Kashee but they do sound good.
    39 Julie Lee 9
kept seeing Julie everywhere great woman, got her new ish cd and new ep.

    39 Fightstar 9
saw a couple of tracks from fightstar seemed OK, nothing too special. wasn't really in a hard music mood at greenbelt this year though.

    41Kinzli 8
    41 Elliot Jack 8
    41 Finchley 8
three good bands just happens to be three good bands i failed to catch.

    41 Anathallo 8
pulled out of greenbelt pretty early on.

46 The Austin Francis Connection 7
wasn't really aiming to catch them at greenbelt though they do sound like a real fun band
    46 My Spoon 7
    46 Virgin Passages 7

two more acts i intended to catch, Virgin passages were circled on my program but it never happened.
    46 Sinéad O'Connor 7
Ok not booked for greenbelt this year but did hear rumors folks were trying.
    46 Linchpin 7
actually suprisingly good band from what i've heard. would be interested to see live just didn't happen at greenbelt this year.
time of their mainstage slot was changed - shame greenbelt didn't use the text message service to get this info out. still wouldnt have made the gig though was too busy defending my chair in the performance cafe.
    46 Faithless 7
ok obviously not at greenbelt this year but founder member jamie catto was and i was upset i missed him (believe his accoustic set included a couple of old faithless numbers)
    46 Giant Sand 7
good set on mainstage from the Giant Sand stuff i've heard had capacity to be a really great set which it fell a bit short of.

54 The Matthew Herbert Big Band 6
all the write ups on this band seem to focus on the experimental nature of the work and the electronica influences, from these 6 tracks all i heard was very competent jazz of no interest to me so avoided. listening on last.fm to Herbert's stuff on his own without the big band i prefered that.

    54 Howe Gelb 6
played as Howe Gelb and giant Sand(see above) did bring on as a special guest one Mr John Parish (one of only two folks at greenbelt this year to have made it onto the rather select playlist on my mobile)

    54 miriamjones 6
whoever uploaded miriam's stuff onto last.fm made an error with the first album missed a space hence this entery.

    54 The Brute Chorus 6
quite a nice band really just not nice enoughto compete against whatever else was on at that time slot.
    54 Daby Touré 6
quite fancied seeing Daby this year , another missed oppertunity.
    54 Julie McKee 6
definatly wanted to see Julie at greenbelt this year, shame it didnt happen.

63 The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy

early 90's band and what got me into the work of Michael Franti in the first place.5

    63 Starfield 5

canada's answer to delirious? personally i was board of the Uk version so definatly in no need of a canadian one. still a good set on mainstage to a reasonable crowd or so i heard.

    63 Spearhead 5
first two albums under this name before change of label resulted in name change to Michael Franti and...
    63 Baluji Shrivastav 5
playing probably the smallest venue on site at a peak times when up against some of the biggest names on the bill. still stuff i heard on last is worth recomending.
    63 Tankus The Henge 5
can't say they do a lot for me.
    63 Larry Norman 5
saw the tribute to Larry . there is a limit to how much you can do in an hour but what was done was impressive. (thought centuar would have been at capacity which it wasn't respectable crowd all the same)
    63 José González 5
saw one song by him i think , not in the mood really though clearly two thirds of folks on site were.
    63 Paul Robeson 5
long departed so obviously not at greenbelt left on this list as Martyn Joseph does a track in tribute to him. which he did in centaur this year
    63 Guards Of Metropolis 5
not at greenbelt, but really really should have been . band features charlie norman.

73 Voice Of The Mysterons 4
nice bit of heavy music in the underground, not the mood i was in this year. maybe next time.
    73 Chip Bailey 4
has played greenbelt as part of so many bands somone really needs to give him a solo gig, though that wasn't likely this year (his cd features guests like duke special and aqualung both were at greenbelt 07)

    73 Michelle Shocked 4
ok she was in england at the right time plays beautiful music and is outspoken about her faith and social justice - why oh why oh why didnt greenbelt book her?

    82 Ed Sheeran 3
young lad never actually named on the gb web site still i managed to hear three tracks of his before the fest. definaly want to hear more
    82 This Morning Call 3
from what i've heard prob the best band in the underground this year. still manged to miss them sadly

    82 Unbelievable Truth 3
andy Yorke's old band , never as successful as his brothers band , friends will prob lynch me for this but Andy may well be more talented than his bro Thom

    82 Foreign Slippers 3
not available on last so i actually paid good cash to download these mp3's , truely beautiful. did a couple of songs with Iain archer which also sounded great. still didn't manage to make her set though.

82 Black Rebel Motorcycle Club 3
rumured to be interested in playing greenbelt and listening to these three tracks can see why would make a great fest headliner for next year.

    99 Lobelia 2
not on the official line up but played two tracks in last orders on monday with her hubby and also part of Miriam Jones's band. seeing Lobelia in last orders was certainly in my top ten festival moment of the year so why dint she have her own set?

    99 Yfriday 2
seems like they pulled out at the last min (ie at some point over the actual weekend) slot on the bill replaced by quench , all much the same to me really.

99 Death Is Not Welcome Here 2
actually quite liked these tracks , another band playing as part of the metal session in the underground. would have been intersting to catch them.

    99 Helen J Hicks 2
really wasn't too impressed by these tracks , did though catch her doing one song at greenbelt which rather changed my mind. She did a track in the Larry norman tribute that was real beautiful.

    99 Shlomo 2
saw a couple of this guys tracks from mainstage. now he had attracted a decent crowd who seemed to love him so who am i to criticise. crowd response certainly justified the slot he had just whatever he was doing was lost on me.

    141 Cherine Anderson 1
given her guest stuff on franti's new cd was kind of hoping he might bring Cherine with him. oh well maybe next time.

141 The Vigilantes of Love 1
not at this years greenbelt but i did pick up an old album of theirs going cheap.

    141 Ben Castle 1
was Ben at greenbelt this year anyone? he's dating Beth Rowley so its quite probable.

    141 Michael Franti; Spearhead 1
yet another of franti's tracks somehow getting yet another tag.

    141 Keith Ayling 1
former kato and K front man used to like his old stuff in the mid 90's.

    141 Steve Lawson 1
steve in the end did end up with a greenbelt gig (as lawson, dodds, woods) still managed to miss that one. saw him in a number of other places though.

    141Steve Lawson & Jez Carr 1
well they were both at greenbelt. a full set from this pair would have been pretty easy for greenbelt to arrange. no luck sadly.

other folks i saw at greenbelt not on this list Karen Grace . ok only saw her gig so as to not lose mt seat in the performance cafe, hadn't even heard of her. maybe a bit floaty for my taste but definatly want to hear more.
Calvin's Dream (just the one track) not seen or heard of these guys in well over a decade so that was a nice surprise.

  • All in the family...

    Jun 24 2008, 3h40 por wsfulmer

Yesterday I fed my monthly music addiction with a new round of stuff from eMusic. After I downloaded everything, I realized that everything I got this month came from musical families:
    • sorrythankyou byUnbelievable Truth - this band is fronted by Andy Yorke, the younger brother of Radiohead's Thom Yorke. You can hear the family resemblence in the vocals, but the comparison stops there. This has a much more mainstream feel to it than anything I've ever heard from Radiohead. Whether that's good or bad is a matter of personal taste.. I think it's okay, but not spectacular.
    • Fables by Immaculate Machine - Immaculate Machine's lead singer Kathryn Calder is the niece of New Pornographers leader A.C. Newman. She also sings in New Pornographers, where she is knows as "not Neko Case, but the other one". (Seriously, it must suck to not be Neko Case.. I really don't like country music, alt or otherwise, but Neko weakens my resolve. What a voice!) So far, I'm indifferent to this album, but I think it will grow on me.
    • EP by The Fiery Furnaces - Still my current favorite band ever, The Fiery Furnaces are a brother-and-sister act. EP has less of a learning curve than their other albums, so if you're thinking about trying them out, this might be a good place to start. Of course, this means that the songs on this album lack the epic storylines prevalent in their other work, but it's still great stuff.
    • Sunny Border Blue by Kristin Hersh - Kristin Hersh comes from Throwing Muses, which she started way back in the 80s with her step-sister... yes, my family theme is getting pretty thin here. Excellent music as usual here - I've never been disappointed by any of her work.

  • (Yet another pointless) Shuffle game! Fun, fun, fun!

    Abr 12 2008, 14h34 por Ihatemusic

Actually it's the first shuffle game for me on here...

Just put your player on shuffle and put the songs in the questions.

    01. Which song do you prefer,The Hand That Feeds by Nine Inch Nails or TocarEverything Else by Howie Day?
I'd say the NIN one. Im listening to the Howie Day one for the first time ever. It sounds okay...

    02. Have you ever listened to TocarMy House My Home by Mr. David Vineron repeat?
Not the song, but the album yes.

    03. What album is Girlfriend (Mandarin Version) from?
From the "Girlfriend" single, I suppose. Not that I own it.

    04. What do you think about the artist who did TocarLipstick Licking
I like Milburn. I like them better than The Arctic Monkeys. Good fun.

    05. Is The Quiet Ones by Oasis one of your favourite songs?
Not really. Not that it's a bad song.
    It's a good Beatles-rip-off-turned-into-something-of-their-own-because-they-always-do-they-are-Oasis-afterall-song.
If you know what I mean.

    06. Who does Hand in Glove by The Smiths remind you of?
Belgium. And in general discussing The Smiths and the tragis history of Moz and Marr with my best friend.
And of "Tim Burgess' legs vs. Johnny Marr's legs"

Also it reminds me of cooking. Because I always listen to the Best Of Tape in our kitchen...

    07. Does TocarArt Bitch by Cansei de Ser Sexy have better lyrics or music?
    Hahaha.
I don't know. I've thought about the lyrics quite a bit even though they are a bit questionable and I do like them, I think, but here I like both equally I think. Although I should say music.

My art is called egocentric soft porno
    Or maybe it's just narcisism
    My one and only subject
Goes from something like anything but
    Me ism

    08. Do any of your friends like Peacock Skeleton With Crooked Feathers by Blood Brothers?
I think so. My friend is a fan of the band but Im not sure about the song.

    09. Is TocarUnder Zenith by Our Lady Peace from a movie soundtrack?
    I don't think so but I wouldn't know, either.
I haven't listened to the band since I was 14...

    10. Is Little Johnny Jewel, Pts. 1 and 2 by Televison overplayed on the radio?
Have YOU ever heard this played on the radio ?!?

    11. What does I'll Do Anything by Marshall Crenshaw remind you of?
That I should listen to the music I got on my computer. Who is this guy? Sounds very 80-ish but Im not sure if it's bad or not.

    12. Which song do you prefershe goes to the world's end by Cruyff in the Bedroom or TocarDefecting Grey by Pretty Things?
The Pretty Things one. Gah, I need to listen to them more!

    13. What album is Song for a jedi by Dyonysos from?
I don't know. I found this song years ago on my search for French music. Apparently the album is called Western Sous La Neige.

    14. When did you first hear TocarDreaming From The Waist (Live) by The Who?
I think my father played it to me when I was younger but I didn't care much about them then.
When I got into the Who myself this wasn't the first thing I started listening to...

    15. When did you first hear Honor the Dead or Else by Final Fantasy?
When I downloaded live stuff by him since I loved his 2 albums... not a very exciting story. I think that was a year ago or something.

    16. What genre is TocarOne in a Million by Andy Yorke?
    Acoustic singer-songwriter ?? I suck at genres...

    17. Do any of your friends like Interstellar Overdriveby Pink Floyd?
    OH YES! (well, one does...)

    18. What colour does Get Up! (Don't Fight It!) by The Datsuns remind you of?
    ... Some... gay black/violet thing ?

    19. Have you ever blasted Public Witness Program by Fugazi on your stereo?
Why would you not listen to Fugazi really loud unless you had to?
They are meant to be blasted.

    20. What genre is All In The Mind by The Verve?
    Shoegaze-Psychedelic-Rock?
Whatever it is, I love it dearly...

    21. Can you play gonna win by Whiskeytown on any instrument?
No. Wouldnt be my first choice, either. (Not that it's a bad song)

    22. What is your favourite lyric from TocarThis Will Be My Year by Semisonic?
    Then you tell yourself
    What you want to hear
    Cause you have to believe
    This will be my year

    23. What is your favourite lyric from Im Ersten Licht (Mr. Bird And Partner Version) by Kante?

    manchmal redest Du im Schlaf

    von noch nie betretenen Orten

    mit noch nie verwandten Worten

    wenn wir bei Tageslicht aufwachen

    und bevor wir ganz aufstehen

    redest Du manchmal von Sachen

von denen ich nicht viel versteh

    24. Would you recommend In My Place by The String Quartet to your friends?
    Yes.
Even though if you know Coldplay lyrics to well then you still cant help but sing along even though noone's singing...

    25. Is Powerman (demo) by The Kinks a good song to dance to?
Yes, well, it does work. For me.

    26. Do you ever hear I think the record's stopped by Help She Can't Swim on the radio?
    No, they aren't that well-known.
They are underrated but I wouldn't want them hyped either.

    27. Is Drive My Car by The Beatles more of a "night time" or "daytime" song?
    Daytime.

    28. Does Where I Am And You Begin by Radiohead have any special meaning to you?
Not this version no, but the song in general: yes.

    29. Do any of your friends like Star by Primal Scream?
I don't think they know it.

    30. Is Red Morning Light by Kings of Leon a fast or slow song?

Rather fast. (Isnt the guitar still greaaat?)

    31. Is TocarShot By Both Sides by Magazinee a happy or sad song?
    Neither...?

    32. What is one of your favourite lyrics from Hyper-ballad by Björk?

Imagine what my body would sound like
    Slamming against those rocks

    &

I go through all this before you wake up
So I can feel happier to be safe up here with you

    33. Is I Got Love If You Want Itby The Yardbirds better to listen to alone or with friends?
    Depends on the friend(s).
It's great either way, I think. But not for me friends who aren't into old music at all...

    34. When did you first hear Never Wanna See You Cry by The Verve?
As it's a B-side it must have been a few months ago.

    35. Name 3 other songs by the artist who did Electro Boy
    Hahaha. Okay.
"Married On the Morrow", "Mod Molves" & "I did a shit on your mum"
These aren't official titles though since they've never actually released anything.
    Yet.

    36. Do you know all the words to Soon by My Bloody Valentine?
No. I know exactly what it sounds like but I don't have an idea what the actually words are sometimes. But it's My Bloody Valentine, what can you do?

    37. Does TocarBull In The Heather by Sonic Youth have better lyrics or music?
    Music.
But the way the lyrics are presented is pretty important.

    10, 20, 30, 40
tell me that you wanna scold me
tell me that you a-dore me

    38. What album is TocarBricklayer by Hüsker Dü from?
    Land Speed Record.

That was less fun than I thought it would be.
    Boring-ish questions.
I should have been able to answer the lyrics/music question for Snow Patrol.
Lyrics would have won for TocarBatten Down The Hatch:

God Only Knows What Brian Wilson Meant...

  • An extensive list of 2008 forthcoming releases!

    Jan 29 2008, 18h47 por richtaylor521

Since I still need to scribe some write-ups for some of the albums on my best of ‘07 list, I figured I’d post this.

Question marks (?) indicate artists that have stated they’re writing new material, but an ‘08 release is not definite; although, at an educated guess- I’d say an ‘08 release is likely.

  • 50 questions - top overall artists

    Out 26 2007, 23h57 por Ihatemusic

    I'm slightly bored...

    1. How did you get into 29?:
    Roddy Woomble
    Travis
    I don't have a number 29, so it`s a shared 28.
I got into Roddy Woomble because I bought Warnings/Promisesby Idlewildand fell in love with them right away. After buying all their other albums I just had to get his solo album. The best modern Scottish folk album I own (and only). So beautiful.
I got into Travis because my friend loved them. I saw an interview on tv and then they played "Tied to the 90s" and it was just so adorable. Then they brought out 12 Memories in 2003 and I loved it so much. I still think it's a fantastic album, they best they did and very underrated. Fucking sad, too.

    2. What was the first song you ever heard by 22?:
    The Stone Roses
"Waterfall" when I was 11 and I loved it to bits.

    3. What's your favorite lyric by 33?:
    Pete Yorn
I love this man, so that's very difficult. He got brilliant lines, very moving. But right now I rather get all giggly from "Georgie Boy" but thats, um, my Pink Floyd pre-occupation.

    4. What is your favorite album by 49?:
    Neutral Milk Hotel
Easy: "The Fool". 1:53 minutes of brilliance

    5. How many albums by 13 do you own?:
    My Bloody Valentine
Two, because that's just how many they released.

    6. What is your favorite song by 50?:
    Kante
God. So difficult. So many brilliant ones. Probably a tie between "Die Summe der Einzelnen Teile" and "Zombi".

    7. Is there a song by 39 that makes you sad?:
    Johannes Brahms
Not that I know. He's just there because I had an obsession with "Hungarian Dance No. 5" and that's hardly sad.

    8. What is your favorite song by 15?:
    Zoé
Mhm. Very difficult, I love a lot of their songs. Maybe "Dead" or "She Comes", I love how much gloomier their newer stuff is. Even though I still like older happy things like "Peace & Love" and "Deja de conecto".

    9. What is your favorite song by 5?:
    Idlewild
Five albums full of awesomeness and then this question! Almost everything of 100 Broken Windows: "Litte Discourage", "Roseability", "Idea Track", "Listen to what you've got", "Actually it's Darkness", "Rusty"... Apart from this album, probably "This is worse" (b-side), "When I Argue I See Shapes" and "I'm Happy To Be Here Tonight" of their debut when they were still punk: Hope Is Important. "El Captain", "I Understand it", "I want a Warning" and "Love steals us from lonliness" of Warnings/Promises and "If it takes you home" and "You & I are both away" of their 07 release: Make Another World

    10. Is there a song by 6 that makes you happy?:
    Radiohead
    "Pop Is Dead"

    11. What is your favorite album by 40?:
Er. I have three "40"s, so:
Hüsker Dü-> No Idea. Apartently I mostly listened to Everything Falls Apart
    Ryan Adams-> Love Is Hell
Noir Désir-> Paradize. Because its the only one I own so far. Shamefully.

    12. What is your favorite song by 10?:
