01. How did you get into #31?
I was a big fan of Queer as Folk (the US version) once upon a time around four yeras ago, and I stayed up until ass o'clock in the morning watching this one storyline, and then Brian and Justin got back together to the tune of
Lover's Spit and it was beautiful. And the next day I downloaded
You Forgot It in People and I fell in love with
Broken Social Scene.
02. What was the first song you ever heard by #22?
Needle in the Hay is the first
Elliott Smith song I ever heard, I think. In The Royal Tenenbaums.
03. What's your favorite lyric by #41 ?
Well,
Bear McCreary is the guy who writes the score for BSG. But one time he wrote an operatic-style song for the first season, and translated into English one of the lyrics means: "There's a toaster in your head and it wears high heels." AWESOME.
04. What is your favorite album by #49 ?
My favourite
Nick Drake album? It should be simple but it's kinda hard. I love
Pink Moon because it's freaking
Pink Moon, but I have special connections with
Five Leaves Left.
05. How many albums by #13 do you own?
I own two
Thom Yorke albums,
The Eraser, and
Spitting Feathers, which is a Japanese import collection of all the b-sides from
The Eraser.
06. What is your favorite song by #50 ?
I haven't listened to
Led Zeppelin for a while, which is why they're on the bottom, but sometimes I think
White Summer/Black Mountain Side from
Coda is my favourite. Because it's such a nostalgic return to their roots, at a time when they had (d)evolved into a Journey-esque synth band.
07. Is there a song by #4 that makes you sad?
The easiest answer to this question is
Battery In Your Leg, because it's the last song Graham Coxon played with
Blur and it's the only song Damon Albarn wrote about the band, and it's probably the last Blur song ever, but
Caramel might just be more sad, if you take away the context. Or
1992.
08. What is your least favorite song by #15 ?
Ooh, that's a difficult one. Sometimes some of the songs on
Andrew Bird's
Armchair Apocrypha piss me off, because they're so obviously derivative of his earlier work. I know
Imitosis is a redux of
I, and I love it for that, but in
Heretics he completely rips off the line from
A Nervous Tic Motion of the Head to the Left,
Fake Palindromes-style. I don't know. Something about it bugs me, even though I like the lyrics.
09. What is your favorite song by #5
I always end up having to choose my favourite
Animal Collective song with these memes. They always change! Plus, their albums are so diverse that one song sounds like it's written by a completely different band from another. I think
We Tigers is probably one of the coolest moments in music, so I'll go with that.
10. Is there a song by #6 that makes you happy?
A lot of
Devendra Banhart songs make me happy, like,
Seahorse and
Will Is My Friend.
11. What is your favorite album by #40 ?
Wow, I haven't listened to
Tom McRae in ages. I guess
Just Like Blood, that was the best produced and it has
Mermaid Blues on it.
12. What is your favorite song by #10 ?
I'd have to say
On a Neck, On a Spit because holy shit,
Grizzly Bear! Also:
you can't go home again/each time it's different, yeah, ouch.
13. What is a good memory you have involving #33 ?
I honestly can't think of a memory involving
The Mountain Goats. Um, I probably sat around depressed listening to
Get Lonely a lot, fall of 2006?
14. What is your favourite song by #37 ?
Ooh! I'd say
Coney Island Shuffle is probably my favourite
Andrew Bird's Bowl of Fire song, because I could dance to that forever. However, I have to give second place if not a tie to
Why?, because yeeeow!
15. Is there a song by #19 that makes you happy?
Many songs by
The Arcade Fire make me happy. Like
Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels) and...yeah, most of them. They're so anthemic and built to jump around your room singing along to, and yet there's such sadness behind the lyrics.
16. How many times have you seen #24 live?
Oh my god, I WISH I'd seen
Pulp. But I HAVE seen
Jarvis Cocker, which was almost as awesome.
17. What is the first song you heard by #23 ?
Again, I always get asked the first song I heard by
Nickel Creek and I can never remember. But it's probably...OH! It's totally
The Lighthouse's Tale! I've gotten this wrong on all other surveys, oops. I had totally forgotten.
18. What is your favorite album by #11 ?
Always and forever, my favourite
The White Stripes album is
The White Stripes. There's something about it that's so raw and perfect. Which is not to say that I haven't loved their evolution as a band, I just...keep coming back to the first one.
19. Who is your favorite member of #1 ?
They always ask me this one too, and I still can't decide my favourite
Radiohead member. Oh well.
20. How many times have you seen #14 live?
I've seen
Beirut once, though I've tried unsuccessfully many other times. I'm just gonna say, it helps when your friend's sister is the band's violinist.
21. What is a good memory you have involving #45 ?
Nothing specific, but I associate
Elbow with the end of my third year of university.
22. What is your favorite song by #16 ?
Always end up with the same questions. Right now, my favourite
Portishead song is
The Rip. Mostly because
Radiohead have been soundchecking it a lot and Thom and Jonny recorded a cover. Also, it's one of their prettiest songs ever.
23. What is the first song you heard by #47 ?
Probably
When The Lights Go Out as it is the first on
Rubber Factory, but then again
Set Me Free is in School Of Rock which I saw before that
The Black Keys album came out. I didn't really notice the song, though.
24. What is your favorite album by #3 ?
Greetings From Michigan: The Great Lake State, because it is the most coherent, diverse, and flowing-start-to-finish of
Sufjan Stevens' albums.
25. What is your favourite song by #18 ?
Oooh, I'd say my favourite
Supergrass song is
Mary. Just, overall fun.
26. What is the first song you heard by #38 ?
Skakka, cos it's the first on
Animamina, which I bought after feeling guilty that I got to my first
Sigur Rós show late and missed
Amina open.
27. What is your favourite lyric that #21 has sung?
Tom Waits singing
Day After Tomorrow is one of the saddest songs I've ever heard. It's the best anti-war song ever.
"I close my eyes/Every night/And I dream that I can hold you/They fill us full of lies/Everyone buys/About what it means to be a soldier/I still don't know how I'm supposed to feel/About all the blood that's been spilled/Look out on the street/Get me back home/On the day after tomorrow."
28. What is your favourite song by #2 ?
Viðrar vel til loftárása. I can't even describe it. It is above music. I've seen it live three times, and each time
Sigur Rós make me stop breathing for a bit.
29. What is the first song you heard by #32 ?
It's got to be
Loser, when it was on the radio alllll the time. I still love that song, though. I wonder if
Beck does.
30. What is your favorite song by #8 ?
100 Knives is one of the simplest things that
Mirah has done, but it's just perfect.
31. How many times have you seen #17 live?
Yes, once. Finally. It was last summer, at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California, more commonly referred to as THE WORST VENUE EVER (UNLESS YOU FORK OUT OVER $100), but even that couldn't bring
Björk down.
32. Is there a song by #44 that makes you happy?
With
The Kills, it's more of a sassy-happy, but I guess
M.E.X.I.C.O. or
No Wow/Telephone Radio Germany.
33. What is your favorite album by #12 ?
Asking someone's favourite album by
The Beatles is like asking your favourite chapter of the Bible. If I was religious. But anyway, I guess
The White Album or
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band?
34. What is the worst song by #29 ?
Oh man, I couldn't tell you what the worst
Belle and Sebastian song is. They're all adorable!
35. What was the first song you heard by #34 ?
the lioness, because it was recommended to me by a friend. Wow, that song's bleak. But it hooked me on
Songs: Ohia!
36. What is your favorite album by #42 ?
Well, unfortunately that is
Jimi Hendrix and not
The Jimi Hendrix so it's just my random solo stuff of his, and there aren't really albums.
Live At Woodstock I guess?
37. How many times have you seen #39 live?
Well, I've seen
Animal Collective twice, and the second time
Panda Bear performed
Comfy in Nautica, does that count?
38. What is your favorite album by #36 ?
Haven't listened to
Rilo Kiley in ages, but I guess I'd say
Take Offs and Landings.
39. What is the first song you heard by #28 ?
Melody Day, cos it's the first on
Caribou's
Andorra.
40. What is your favourite album by #7?
The Tain, because
The Decemberists actually wrote an 18 minute, 5 part song about the Cattle Raid of Cooley. And it's amazing.
Wow, this survey is a tribute to how bored/lazy I am right now.
