Andrew Bird (born July 11, 1973) is an American musician, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist. He was born in Chicago[1] and currently splits his time between Chicago and a farm near the town of Elizabeth in northwest Illinois. He is musically proficient at the violin, whistling, guitar, mandolin, and glockenspiel.
Early life and the Bowl of Fire (1973–2002)
Trained in the Suzuki method from the age of four,[2] Bird first attended Illinois Wesleyan University but graduated from Illinois’ Northwestern University with a bachelor’s degree in violin performance in 1996. That same year he self-released his first solo album, Music of Hair. Vastly different from his later work, this album showcased his violin skills and paid tribute to his fascination with both American and European folk traditions, as well as jazz and blues. Following this, his initial commercial exposure came through collaborative work with the band Squirrel Nut Zippers, appearing on three of their albums (Hot, Sold Out, and Perennial Favorites) between 1996 and 1998.
Taking on the role of band leader, Bird released Thrills on Rykodisc in 1997 with his group Andrew Bird’s Bowl of Fire, shortly followed by second album Oh! The Grandeur in 1998.

Bird or Pallett?I think Bird is more versatile and has an insanely extended musical language. He’s much more than just a classically trained violinist playing pop songs. He can play mean jigs, reels and hornpipes better than the Irish musicians here in Ireland. Some say he sounds better than the plodding Stéphane Grappell, godfather of gypsy jazz violin. He has absorbed the techniques and stylings of Swedish folk music, klezmer and Eastern European influences, Calypso and Zydeco, German Cabaret Leider, Scottish and Englaish Folk music, Ecuadoran Pasillo, Latin & flamenco flares, Kenyan Benga Nyatiti music, Classical counterpoint and pizzicato techniques, Ethiopian Jazz and funk and the polyrhythms of African music, Appalachian folk roots and bluegrass, delta blues and gospel, Memphis rock & roll, hot jazz, swing and bebop. Whilst these influences aren’t so obvious in recent albums, it certainly has contributed greatly to his phrasing on the violin.

hey guys just saw Andrew and St. Vincent about a week ago. Amazing show second time i've seen andrew (first was Bonnaroo). Been a big fan for a awhile. Met him afterwards and he signed my poster. I also shot photos at his show for one of my school's media publications.
