    Caro diario,

    Igor.

  • Gotthard & The Crave Concert @ Garage London

    Nov 15 2009, 18h49 por IrishGirl82

    Di., 3. Nov. – Gotthard

I love going to concerts. And even more so, when I can go to gigs in foreign countries because it's always extra special. Get to know new concert venues, another audience, everything new and exciting!

Now what a big surprise that one of our biggest bands in Switzerland - Gotthard - would play in London during our November holidays. Sure enough we decided to go there. Gotthard played on 3rd November at the Garage club in London. Even though the venue can be reached easily by tube (almost direct at tube station Highbury) it was a massive adventure to finally get there. It was the evening the city decided to switch on all the Christmas lights. Tube and bus stations/routes were closed! And all roads especially Oxfordstreet and Regent Street were crowded with thousands of people, Andrea Bocelli singing Christmas and winter songs and Jim Carrey being at the premiere of his new movie "A Christmas Carol" on the red carpet all at the same time. So we crossed our ways through the crowds and big events and got just on time to the Garage. It's a nice little club with lots of great rock gigs there, just the way I like it. Great Vodka-Orange too (and much cheaper than everywhere else), yumm!

We were very surprised to see lots of people wearing Gotthard T-Shirts, probably some of them Swiss fans, but also many UK people waiting for the biggest Swiss Hardrock band! When the show started the hall was crowded.
A rock band from Brighton/UK, The Crave started the evening as support act. Even though I haven't ever heard of them, they got me from the very first song. The Crave are making melodic, great rock music, some of it very rough and cool! And music you could absolutely imagine listening to on radio and everywhere. The kind of music that should conquer the top of the charts. Having great songs and being amazing live is one thing...but hey, they also look damn good! Very good looking young men. I bought their album and now can't wait to hear some more from them! I bet their signatures will be worth a whole lotta money soon.

Now time for Gotthard. Have seen them live before and kinda knew what to expect. And let me tell you, I do think this was one of their best concerts ever. It felt like they truly enjoyed every bit of the gig and so did the audience. It was a huge rock party with all of Gotthards biggest songs, especially the most hard rockin' ones like Hush, Lift U Up and Mountain Mama which made us dance like mad and shake our heads! :-D During some songs they asked the audience which songs to play and made a little acoustic set with beautiful ballads including the wonderful Heaven which I loved so much. The singer Steve Lees voice seemed strong and perfect and so was the sound. It surely was one of our best evenings in London this time. It kinda felt like a piece of home to see a Swiss band in England. And it also made us feel proud that we've got such great music here in Switzerland - wahey!!

  • 50 Questions about my Top 50: 2009 Version

    Nov 2 2009, 23h13 por melbo

Because it's been almost two years since I filled this out...I thought it would be fun to see how this has changed.

    1. How did you get into 29? (Martina Sorbara)
My friend Christina loved her first. She has excellent taste in music, so I looked her up.

    2. What was the first song you ever heard by 22? (Clay Aiken)
Haha...umm...I guess something he sang on American Idol? I don't remember whether I watched the auditions that season or picked up the show later.

    3. What's your favorite lyric by 33? (Chris Isaak)
No idea. I don't really pay attention to his lyrics...more his music and his voice.

    4. What is your favorite album by 49? (Spice Girls)
Haha, I guess I prefer Spice World?

    5. How many albums by 13 do you own? (Mariah Carey)
    Five.

    6. What is your favorite song by 50? (Billy Joel)
First, how is Billy only #50?! That's disturbing. I love so many of his songs (so many!!), but if I have to pick just one, I always go with TocarThe Longest Time. I was so disappointed that he didn't sing it at Wrigley Field last summer.

    7. Is there a song by 39 that makes you sad? (Sarah McLachlan)
Mm, yes. TocarWintersong. It's such a beautiful type of sad, though.

    8. What is your favorite song by 15? (Andrea Bocelli)
Vivo Per Lei (con Giorgia), unless it's Olympic time. Then it's Because We Believe.

    9. What is your favorite song by 5? (Vienna Teng)
    TocarHarbor, TocarWhatever You Want, TocarAntebellum.

    10. Is there a song by 6 that makes you happy? (The Beatles)
There are probably a hundred. I mean, really, does their discography ever end? All You Need Is Love would be the most obvious.

    11. What is your favorite album by 40? (Shania Twain)
Come On Over. Seriously, weren't the majority of the songs on that album released to great success?

    12. What is your favorite song by 10? (Jack Johnson)
    TocarBetter Together!

    13. What is a good memory you have involving 30? (Laura Pausini)
I discovered her through a fantastic lady that I used to work for. She passed away a few years ago, but listening to Laura always makes me think of her.

    14. What is your favorite song by 38? (Michael Jackson)
Don't Stop Til You Get Enough. I think.

    15. Is there a song by 19 that makes you happy? (Backstreet Boys)
BSB makes me so nostalgic. Specifically, I guess I'll go with TocarAs Long As You Love Me

    16. How many times have you seen 25 live? (Madonna)
None. I'm sure that would be a great show, though!

    17. What is the first song you ever heard by 23? (Destiny's Child)
I don't know what the first song I heard would have been, but the first one that I liked was probably TocarBills, Bills, Bills.

    18. What is your favorite album by 11? (John Mayer)
    Continuum! Easily.

    19. What is your favorite song by 1? (Emm Gryner)
So far, this is the only ranking that hasn't changed since the last time I did this survey, and the answer hasn't changed either. My favourite Emm song is still Blackwinged Bird

    20. Have you ever seen 14 live? (Rascal Flatts)
No! I would love to, but I don't have any local friends who like them.

    21. What is a good memory involving 27? (Rachael Yamagata)
Her songs make me think of many fabulous road trips with Jules.

    22. What is your favorite song by 16? (Sara Bareilles)
    TocarGravity. So. Incredible.

    23. What is the first song you ever heard by 47? (Astor Piazzolla)
I have no idea. Since I'm a skating fan, TocarLibertango is a safe bet!

    24. What is your favorite album by 18? (Diana Krall)
The Girl In The Other Room

    25. What is your favorite song by 21? (Regina Spektor)
    TocarHotel Song or TocarSamson

    26. What is the first song you ever heard by 26? (Alicia Keys)
    I'm sure it was TocarFallin'

    27. What is your favorite album by 3? (Chantal Kreviazuk)
Here's another one that hasn't changed! But the answer might...the verdict is still out. What If It All Means Something has been my favourite, but her new one, Plain Jane is gaining ground. We'll see.

    28. What is you favorite song by 2? (Céline Dion)
Céline is still #2. And TocarS'il Suffisait D'Aimer is still my favourite. Although there are SO MANY.

    29. What was the first song you ever heard by 32? (Sarah Slean)
TocarMy Invitation, and I didn't really like it, so I didn't listen to her for a long time. I'm still not crazy about that song, but I do love her.

    30. What is you favorite song by 8? (Kelly Clarkson)
I can't believe she's ranked so high, first of all. I don't feel like I listen to her that often. Maybe because it takes me so many listens to decide whether or not I like her songs, haha. I guess my favourite is TocarSince U Been Gone. Does that make me shallow?

    31. How many times have you seen 17 live? (Keith Urban)
    I haven't.

    32. Is there a song by 44 that makes you happy? (Chicago)
    TocarJust You 'N' Me

    33. What is you favorite album by 12? (Superchick)
    Beauty from Pain

    34. What is the worst song by 45? (Coldplay)
I don't think there's any that make me groan.

    35. What was the first song you ever heard by 34? (Daniel Bedingfield)
    TocarJames Dean (I Wanna Know)

    36. What is your favorite album by 48? (Blue Rodeo)
I definitely haven't heard all their albums, but I have The Days in Between and I like it.

    37. How many times have you seen 42 live? (U2)
I haven't ever, although I'm sure it's a great show. I'm not sure I would shell out the cash for it, though.

    38. What is your favorite song by 36? (Bryan Adams)
    Seriously? Obviously TocarSummer Of '69

    39. What was the first song you ever heard by 28? (Jamie Cullum)
I'm going to go with These Are The Days, because that's the first track on Twentysomething. I was with a friend when she bought it and we listened to it on the way home from Windsor.

    40. What is your favorite album by 7? (Michael Bublé)
    It's Time

    41. Is there a song by 31 that makes you happy? (98 Degrees)
    I still love TocarStill.

  • Third Year - The Artists

    Ago 30 2009, 20h32 por Richardgm

Today, August 30, 2009 marks my third year on last.fm. My custom is that every year on this day I post my top ten tracks and my top ten artists of the past 365 days.

    Click for Year 1
    Click for Year 2

In total I have played over 139 265 tracks*.
Therefore I played over 39 000 tracks in one year.
An average of 109 songs were played each day (down from 132)

    – 1. X-Ray Dog - played 1,258 this year (11,446 total).
NEW 2. Martin Phipps - played 1,123 this year.
▲3. Michael Jackson - played 1,059 this year (2,927 total).
▼4. Future World Music - played 1,058 this year (2,592 total).
▲5. Mariah Carey - played 958 times this year (3,532 total).
▲6. Beyoncé - played 900 times this year (1,399 total).
NEW 7. Audiomachine - played 873 times this year.
▼8. Moby - played 782 times this year (2,526 total)
▲9. Brandy - played 777 times this year (1,158 total)
▲10. Andrea Bocelli - played 742 times this year (1,438 total)

    1. Again for the third consecutive year, X-Ray Dog have been my most played artist.
This year's top played song: Darkest Empire
    This year's plays / position: 91 / #18

    2. One of two new artists made their way unto my year-end top 10 charts, the highest placer is Martin Phipps. More on him and the music I have been listening to here.
This year's top played song: The Work Of The Lord
    This year's plays / position: 117 / #8

    3. Michael Jackson has made his way unto my top ten. Of course this is thanks to his recent death, and my discovering his older songs (Motown).
This year's top played song: TocarStranger in Moscow
    This year's plays / position: 69 /#40

    4. Trailer music creators, Future World Music has fallen one spot, and is now #4 on my year-end charts.
This year's top played song: Unstoppable
    This year's plays / position: 119 / #9

    5. Mariah Carey resurged this year, climbing one spot as her E=MC2 was played quite a few times (along with her old catalog).
This year's top played song: Do You Know Where You're Going To (Theme From Mahogany)
    This year's plays / position: 30 / #159

    6. Beyonce's album I Am... was no doubt a hit, and it shows in my plays of her. Like Martin Phipps, and Michael Jackson, this is her first time on my year-end top 10 ten.
This year's top played song: If I Were A Boy
    This year's plays / position: 145 / #4

    7. The second and final new artist on my top 10 artists of the past 365 years is the Trailer music project titled Audiomachine.
This year's top played song: Thunderdome (Build @ 1:46)
    This year's plays / position: 151 / #3

    8. This is Moby's second year on these charts. While he falls to #8 from #7, my love for his music remains.
This year's top played song: TocarOne of These Mornings
    This year's plays / position: 57 / #56

    9. Brandy's album Human was released late 2008, her album plays are reflected here. She too is a new-comer to the top 10.
This year's top played song: TocarRight Here (Departed)
    This year's plays / position: 129 / #6

    10. Andrea Bocelli finally made it unto the top 10 year end after missing out on his debut year, the year 2008. His Incanto, along with plays from earlier works propelled him to #10, with742 plays.
This year's top played song: TocarBecause
    This year's plays / position: 109 / #12

So what have we learned? I played a significantly smaller amount of songs this past year. What would have accounted for this? My final year at University, my non-reliance on music as a past time, and traveling on the road where my CD player does not scrobble tracks. This is my first year that all my 10 ten artists were not played over 1, 000 times.

Also, unlike my first year on last.fm (August 30 2006 - 2007), where New Age music mostly filled my appetite, Pop / R&B and Trailer Music seems to be preferred these days.

*These number are not entirely accurate as I am yet to scrobble two weeks of play data from my Zune.

Stats, part 7: classical music

    Ago 24 2009, 15h13 por -273C

Ladies and gentlemen, today our talk would be about classical music stats on Last.fm

    предыдущие посты / previous entries
    mainstream
    russian rock
    progressive rock
    black metal
    jazz
    pop

First of all, our traditional arrangement with respect to number of plays and number of listeners.

    Pic. 1 - full size

    Pic. 2 - full size

To be honest, there are not 100 artists as usual, but only 85, because I deleted all the authors of popular movies' soundtracks without a trace of pity. The graphs exhibit something new to us: a rapid decrease of popularity near the end. It seems like there's a standard set of classical composers, and composers out of that set are rather obscure.

    Pic. 3

From that plot we can see, that three most famous composers dominate in classical music: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Johann Sebastian Bach, Ludwig van Beethoven.

    Pic. 4 - full size

Here is specific number of scrobbles for classical composers and performers. The situation here is even worse than with jazz music. The average value is 9.5 and the maximal value belongs to quite unheard-of D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, which has 36 plays per listener.

    Pic. 5

The histogram just confirms the fact that nowadays people listen to classical music without enthusiasm.

    Pic. 6

As one can expect, the most popular composers have the largest number of messages in their shoutboxes.

    Pic.7

And here I see the effect of "potential barrier" again: only artists with more-than-average number of plays per listener can have a lot of shouts. But in classical music it is less present than in another genres because of low average specific number of scrobbles.

The total playcount of classical music on last.fm is 150 millions.

  • Classic Charts / Sales

    Jul 19 2009, 16h09 por classicalnl

The nice thing of being a member of Itunes is that you suddenly have more music available than in your own music store. Still not everything, I mean, I can't buy music from Pakistan or certain artists since they are only for sale in the US store, but still.
the other thing I like is that we finally have charts for more genres than in our own music magazines. So I thought it would be nice to see what sells well in the classical genre. From now on I will try to keep an eye on it and in some cases share the music I find.

Andrea Bocelli is still on almost efery hitlist, if not alone and on number one, then in combination with Sarah Brightman for example.
In the UK, USA, Germany, Denmark, Ireland, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal and Sweden their Time to say goodbye is number one.
In Spain he is number one allone with Vivo por ella.
in Belgium he is number one with Because we believe which he sings with the Dutch singer, Marco Borsato.

His Con te partiro is number one in Canada. And finally in Australia it's The Prayer.

So what's left for others then?

Luciano Pavarotti is number one with Caruso in France.

Paul Potts is on one in Austria and Luxembourg with Nessun dorma.

David Garrett is on number one in Switzerland with the theme of Pirates of the Carribean, and Finland is giving honor to it's own composer J. Sibelius, with Finlandia opus 26.

Seems that many people first and most of all buy music from their own country. Partly because not all music is always available, and most likely their own music is.
Italy has on number one Giovanni Allevi & Virtuosi Italiani with Come Sei Veramenta.

Finally Greece and Japan. Greece surprises us with
Luciano Pavarotti & Frank Sinatra singing My Way.

Japan's Nobuyuki Tsujii the blind pianist with Chopin's polonaise nr 6, heroique, is on number one, from his album Debut.

I must say, not much new to discover. What it shows though is that Andrea Bocelli has conquered the hearts of almost anyone in the world who has acces to his music. And that is quite something. King of modern classic, king of vocals?

No need to come up with a title as they did for Michael Jackson. Just enjoy his music.

  • David Foster discovers new Classical crossover superstar

    Jun 30 2009, 21h11 por Mirtrione

I just have to give a shout out to a singer who's album I have been anticipating for literally years.

David Foster, the man behind behind Celine Dion, Josh Groban and Michael Bublé has discovered a new singer named Tiffany Desrosiers.

Tiffany has just released her self-titled debut album 'Tiffany Desrosiers' (you can buy it from here). An album full of original songs, many of which she co-wrote herself. The exception being her tremendous rendition of TocarHallelujah.

If you like Classical Crossover, or artists like Celine Dion, Josh Groban, Lara Fabian and Barbara Streisand you should give Tiffany a listen.

    TocarAlone
    TocarSend Me Down an Angel
    TocarHallelujah
    TocarForever My Love
    TocarYou Don't Know
    TocarWhat You Do To Me
    TocarRise Above
    TocarLike I Would For You
    TocarAfter The Rain
    TocarIt's Over Now
    TocarThe World To Me
    TocarWith These Tears (featuring DESTINO)

I have been following Classical Crossover for nearly ten years, and am exicted by a new artist that writes their own material. <3

Give her a listen, and if you like her, support an upcoming artist by purchasing a few songs, or her whole album.
