Until Today Becomes Yesterday - Three Steps to the Ocean [2009]
Emotional, instrumental, post-metal. They were definitely influenced by Pelican; I might like it better than Pelican's latest, actually. Portions of the last track remind me of classic Tortoise.

It's All About Our Silence EP - Black Sea [2009]
Post-metal with heavy post-rock leanings. Features death metal vocals from a singer with a distinct voice. It's somewhat disjointed, but still a very good EP.

Fall Be Kind EP - Animal Collective[2009]
Similar to Merriweather Post Pavilion and almost as enjoyable.

Got Nuffin EP - Spoon [2009]
The rapping on the last track is embarrassing. I really hope this isn't a taste of things to come. Even the title track is disappointing and forgettable.

    Amesoeurs - Amesoeurs [2009]
French band that switches between black metal, post metal, and shoegaze-pop. The lead singer is a woman who switches between clean vocals and death metal vocals. It's a mess; not my thing.

    Post-Nothing - Japandroids [2009]
    Indie/emo/punk vocals, like Brand New.
Little messy in parts, w.r.t. vocals and instrumentals; it's still very enjoyable.
The last three songs have some stoner rock vibes to them. TocarCrazy/Forever, in particular, reminds me of Kyuss's TocarGardenia, only slower.

Beacons Of Ancestorship - Tortoise [2009]
This was their first LP since 2006. Such a disappointing album. I expected more from one of the pioneers of post-rock. Stylistically, it is all over the place and extremely disjointed.
track 1 - synthy blend; something almost hip-hop about. Yet, it sorta reminds me of Boredoms' longer tracks
    track 2 - 70's somewhat Can-like; very dated sounding
track 3 and 9 - dubstep mixed in
    track 4 - mid-eastern influences
track 6 - messy, noise rock
track 7 and 8 - typical Tortoise tracks, and they sound like they would be at home in a James Bond soundtrack.
track 5 and 10 - short, filler tracks

Two Fingers - Two Fingers [2009]
Collab between Brazilians Amon Tobin and Joe "Doubleclick" Chapman.
A much better collaboration than Moderat.
Most of the songs feature a rapper, and Sway is that rapper 50% of the time.

    The Clearing - disappearer [2009]
Several of the tracks are instrumental.
Kinda reminds me of softer/later Godflesh or less shoegazey Jesu (same thing) mixed with new Pelican (Tocarobsidian is especially Pelican-like).

  • Poorly written review of Moderat's S/T, oh boy!

    Nov 25 2009, 18h58 por dx_xb

Moderat is the two gents behind Modeselektor (Gernot Bronsert and Sebastian Szary) plus the guy behind Apparat (Sascha Ring). These three fellows all produce electronic music in Berlin, so either collaborations or dis tracks are pretty much mandatory.

The first four tracks lull you into a false security that the whole album will feature glitchy Burial-like beats, but this is not so.

The first track, A New Error, starts off with a simple loop of a broken major chord that reminds me of Aphex Twin then the dub kicks in and gives this track a unique kick. It's a rather bold blending of different styles, that somehow works very well and sets the bar pretty high for the rest of the album.

The next track, Rusty Nails, sounds very typical of a Modeselektor track (or Burial, practically the same sound nowadays). This track features the Thom Yorke/Chris Martin-esk vocal stylings of Mr. Apparat himself. This track typifies everything I love in a Modeselektor remix, that delicate blend of upbeat and melancholy. It's like a rainy Saturday morning, there's some sort of comfort in the dreariness.

Seamonkey reminds me of Amon Tobin.

Slow Match features lightening fast vocals of Caribbean rapper Paul St. Hilaire, which works surprisingly well with the glibeant (ambitch?) beat.

The next two tracks, 3 Minutes Of and Nasty Silence, slow things down with low-key ambiance that reminds me of Tim Hecker with a bit of techno thrown in.

I love Sick With It for some inexplicable reason, but it does not sound like it belongs on this album at all. Being placed in the middle of the album makes it stand out even more. I don't know why I like this song so much. I usually detest Reggae-rap style of singing, and the beat is rather clunky, like an old car sputtering along. I'll be damned if I don't nod my head to it though.

The next two tracks, Porc#1 and Porc#2, are bouncy post-rock mixes that blend nicely into each other, except for the tail-end of Porc#2 which turns into some dub-like creature.

Les Grandes Marches is probably the weakest track on the album. It sounds like the instrumental version of a T.A.T.U song. It could be worse, of course. The freshness of the other tracks make this song seem worse than it actually is. Maybe it will grow on me with time.

Berlin is a nice little palate cleanser.

Nr. 22 is another song that uses a simple beat, I believe it's a remix of TocarDays Go By. Yet, I'd say it's the second weakest track. Again, it just seems lackluster compared to some of the other tracks on the album.

Out Of Sight is very similar to Rusty Nails. It features the familiar skipping/glitch beat and vocals by Apparat. Between the two, I can't decide which track I like more.

The album comes to a close with BeatsWaySick. The beat really makes this track, and it's a good thing because I find the rapping to be pretty awful here. It's similar to sick with it, but less clunky and more duby. I do love the Boards of Canada-esk sample in the chorus.

I love this album so very much, but the tracks do not flow very well. Half the tracks are smooth ambient with a glitch chaser. The other half are either dub or ambient with light techno.
Delicate ambient tracks are sandwiched between remixes that probably should have been b-sides. I suppose that this might have been the sound that the artists were going for. Yet, it seems as though this album is a collection of singles instead of parts of whole. However, I suppose that the crime of having a boring, cohesive album is a greater offense than having a dynamic, disjointed album.

Here's a Pitchfork review of Moderat.

  • Top 50 Survey II

    Nov 7 2009, 5h57 por jeff071

    1. What is your favorite song by 29?
Queens of the Stone Age : Probably something off Songs For The Deaf. They have alot of good songs.

    2. What was the first song you ever heard by 22?
Leftfield : Afro-right. It was off the Wipeout XL soundtrack, which acted as my gateway to electronic music. I also discovered Orbital there. Hell, the Wipeout XL soundtrack is easily the best electronica compilation I have come across. What a classic.

    3. What is your favorite album by 33?
CoLD SToRAGE : His WipeOut soundtrack. The original. XL was good stuff, but the original is probably the darkest he ever was. His online albums are a little light, but I dig those too.

    4. What is your favorite album by 49?
Jerry Goldsmith : Alien OST. One of the greatest soundtrack ever composed. Just brilliant brillant stuff. Gives me the creeps...

    5. How many albums by 13 do you own?
Meat Beat Manifesto : Nine. I think I might own more of his stuff than anyone. All it is worth buying.

    6. What is your favorite song by 50?
Don Davis : TocarAnything Is Possible. What an ending piece. So uplifting... Really suits the whole feeling of Neo finding his true place...

    7. Is there a song by 7 that makes you sad?
Enigma : The whole McMxc A.D. album. His darkest piece of work and best.

    8. What is your favorite song by 15?
The Chemical Brothers : Surrender. Only because that one has no filler. :) Push the Button is awesome as well.

    9. What is your favorite song by 5?
    KMFDM : Megalomaniac

    10. Is there a song by 6 that makes you happy?
Nirvana : TocarOn A Plain. Lots of feel good vibes with this one. Reminds me of my early 90s childhood.

    11. What is your favorite album by 40?
Akira Ifukube : His score for the original Godzilla film Gojira is the only one I would listen to nowadays.

    12. What is your favorite song by 10?
Juno Reactor : TocarGod Is God. Mesmerizing piece of work. Love that insane synth line.

    13. What is a good memory you have involving 30?
Kou Ootani : Watching Gundam W. Takes me way back. Lovely action score.

    14. What is your favorite song by 38?
    LFO : TocarTied Up

    15. Is there a song by 19 that makes you sad?
Incubus : Wish You Where Here

    16. How many times have you seen 25 live?
David Arnold : Only in the movies.

    17. What is the first song you ever heard by 23
Michael Jackson : Something off Dangerous. Fuck Thriller, Dangerous is his best piece of work.

    18. What is your favorite album by 11?
The Future Sound of London : Accelerator. Wonderful early 90s electronic. Up there with Aphex Twin's SAW 1 album. Now this would be Lifeforms, but I still haven't "got" that album even after many repeated listens.

    19. How did you get into 1?
Nine Inch Nails : I had heard of TR and NIN off hand on forums and electronic essentials list. I almost bought it at Best Buy after having read about it one day. Couple years later, my friend in High School had a DAT tape with The Downward Spiral on it. He showed me the intro track and it totally ripped my head off. I had never heard anything so brutal and agonizing. I later downloaded the full album off Limewire and god that first listen... I had never heard such a depressing album before. It totally beat my early conceptions of music to the ground. Rest is history.

    20. Have you ever seen 14 live?
Bjork : She would be my second choice after Orbital. I've heard she is incredible live. I have a few of her officially released live albums and they totally amaze me. Sounds just the same as she does in the studio and sometimes even better.

    21. What is a good memory involving 27?
    Kou Ootani : ^

    22. What is your favorite song by 16?
Amon Tobin : TocarTheme From Battery. His Chaos Theory OST is the best thing he did. One of the best video game soundtracks I have heard. Haunting, sleek, and stealthy.

    23. What is the first song you ever heard by 47?
Monster Magnet : TocarLook to Your Orb for the Warning

    24. What is your favorite album by 18?
Led Zeppelin : Physical Graffiti. Easy.

    25. What is your favorite song by 21?
Daft Punk : TocarFace To Face

    26. What is the first song you ever heard by 26?
    Rammstein : Du Hast

    27. What's your favorite lyric by 3?
Orbital : They typically have no lyrics, but the best one they did with them was Illuminate.

    28. What is you favorite song by 2?
Shiro Sagisu : Expansion of Blockade. One of the most uplifting and depressing pieces of soundtrack score I have come across.

    29. What was the first song you ever heard by 32?
Red Hot Chili Peppers : Scar Tissue. My ex was into them.

    30. What is you favorite song by 8?
Underworld : Banstyle/Sappy's Curry. Some of the best electronic music EVER recorded. Hands down. Always gives me chills...

    31. How many times have you seen 17 live?
    Breaking Benjamin : Nope.

    32. Is there a song by 44 that makes you happy?
Rage Against the Machine : HAHA actually more pumped.

    33. What is you favorite album by 12?
The Orb : Orbus Terrarum. Such classy stuff. Took me a long time to understand it, but when I did, it was totally worth it. Not one weak moment on here. I have never come across better ambient than this.

    34. What is the worst song by 45?
Massive Attack : Something off Protection.

    35. What was the first song you ever heard by 34?
Boards of Canada : Sixtyten. Always makes my head spin. So hypnotizing... Easily my favorite track by them.

    36. What is your favorite album by 48?
Juano/Nova : His debut. One of the best from this year.

    37. How many times have you seen 42 live?
Audioslave : Never. They aren't even around anymore.

    38. What is your favorite song by 36?
    Justice : Phantom

    39. What was the first song you ever heard by 28?
The Crystal Method : Tocar(Can't You) Trip Like I Do

    40. What is your favorite album by 7?
The Prodigy : The Fat of the Land. MFTJG is great too, but TFOTL is punchy and lean. And It's one of the first electronic albums I got into. What a classic...

    41. Is there a song by 31 that makes you happy?
    Mimosis : Kyoto Sunrise

    42. What is your favorite album by 41?
LUNA SEA : Mother. Nice prog rock. Took me awhile to wrap my head around it.

    43. What is your favorite song by 24?
Aphex Twin : Not going to happen.

    44. What is a good memory you have involving 46?
Hybird : None I can think of...

    45. What is your favorite song by 35?
Kelly Bailey : All his work is good. Hazardous Environments.

    46. Is there a song by 9 that makes you sad?
John Williams : Escape/Chase/Saying Goodbye from E.T.. Extremely moving. His work stands alone from his films amazingly. You don't even need the images.

    47. What is your favorite album by 4?
Martin O'Donnell & Michael Salvatori : Maybe his ODST score, but I still have a soft spot for the original.

    48. Who is a favorite member of 37?
Paul Hartnoll : Paul Hartnoll. :)

    49. What is the first song you ever heard by 43?
Lunatic Calm : TocarLeave You Far Behind off The Matrix soundtrack. Go figure.

    50. How many albums do you own by 20?
The Back Horn : Four. All good stuff.

  • solipsistic NATION No. 162: Digital Hardcore Recordings

    Out 11 2009, 7h16 por solipsisticast

When I launched solipsistic NATION I had a list of people I wanted to be guests on the show. One was Jack Dangers of Meat Beat Manifesto and another was Amon Tobin. I've slowly been making my way down the list and today I'm happy to cross Alec Empire of Digital Hardcore Recordings off that list!

One of my favorite memories of Digital Hardcore Recordings was when I was working alongside a kid who played Korn constantly. I think he was on a mission to assault my ears with what he considered the heaviest and angriest music he knew. I put up with it for a while but after a couple of days I got fed up with it and when it was my turn to play some music I dialed up some Atari Teenage Riot. I couldn't have wished fro a better reaction from him: he fell off his chair in shock. He was simultaneously stunned and laughing hysterically at the intensity of the music that was bludgeoning his ears! Ah, the simple pleasures in life.

I have to be honest, though, my initial reaction to Atari Teenage Riot was pretty much the same. Back in the 90's there was really nothing else like them out there and while I liked it I couldn't make sense of it at first. But like it I did and I started digging up everything I could find that was released on Digital Hardcore Recordings. Atari Teenage Riot will always have a special place in my heart but I also became a big fan of The Curse Of The Golden Vampire, Hanin Elias and pretty much anything Alec Empire puts out.

While most of the stuff on Digital Hardcore Recordings sounds as fresh now as it did when it was first released, time, and Alec Empire have moved on so this week's show serves as a kind of a document of the history Digital Hardcore Recordings: how the label and Atari Teenage Riot began, how people reacted to the band and the label and Alec's new label, Eat Your Heart Out.

I'd like to thank Alec for being so generous with his time. I figured I would count myself lucky if I was able to interview Alec for 15 minutes but instead Alec gave me 90 minutes and the opportunity to answer any question I asked him. Thanks, Alec!

    01. Atari Teenage Riot "Destroy 2000 Years of Culture"
    02. Alec Empire "We All Die"
    03. Interview with Alec Empire of Digital Hardcore Recordings

  • Ulubione Albumy

    Out 10 2009, 7h37 por ErnestRogala

    Bonobo
Najlepszy. Wszystkie albumy są świetne. Nic więcej do dodania.

    Padded Cell
    Night Must Fall
Odkrycie dzięki GTA IV. Fenomenalny nastrój większości utworów.

    Justice
    †
Kolejny artysta, którego odkryłem przez GTA IV.

    Red Hot Chili Peppers
Całokształt świetny Starsze płyty są bardziej żywe, np.
    Red Hot Chili Peppers,
    Mother's Milk,
    a nowsze spokojniejsze, bardziej "balladowe":
    By the Way

    Amon Tobin
    Bricolage
Kolejny artysta od Ninja Tune. Świetnie pocięta mieszanka jazzu, drum'n'bassu.

    Aphex Twin
    Selected Ambient Works 85-92
Definicja ambientu.

    Mr. Fingers
    Amnesia
    Klasyczny house z lat 80'

    Rage Against the Machine
    Rage Against the Machine
Czysty rapcore. Świetne kompozycje gitarowe Toma Morello okraczone krzyczącym, rapowanym wokalem i mocną grą sekcji rytmicznej.

    Łąki Łan
    Łąki Łan
Najlepszy polski zespół XXI wieku jak na razie. Funk + Punk i jest zabawa.

    The Prodigy
    The Fat of the Land
Klasyka. Z tego chyba nie muszę się tłumaczyć, bo chyba wszyscy lubią The Prodigy.

    Télépopmusik
    [album artist=]Angel's Milk[/album]
    Świetny, popowy chillout.

    Melody a. M.
    Także chillout.

    Moby
    18
    Play
    Dwa świetne albumy Moby'ego.

    Yonderboi
    Shallow and Profound
Bardzo strawne połączenie relaksujących brzmień z międzywojenną muzyką.

    The Beatles
    Abbey Road
    Revolver

    Sutekh
    Context Unravelled
    Świetne Minimal Techno

    Jazzanova
    The Singles Collection: 1997-2000
    Nu Jazz tworzony przez niemców.

Na razie to tyle, pełna lista zajęłaby kilka razy więcej miejsca pewnie.
