  • Favourites of 2009 - Part 1

    Dez 24 2009, 21h26 por Atitlan

Well, it's that time of the year so here's the first of two posts about my favourite albums of 2009. This one covers the favourites from the albums that were released this year and that I actually bought. The second post (probably on Boxing Day) will include my favourite albums discovered this year, but not released this year.

    So, Top 10 time ...

10 La Roux - La Roux
Much of the music that shaped my musical tastes came from the early 80s - especially early synth bands. So when someone like La Roux comes along that manages to capture the essence of that sound I'm bound to like it.

Lots of artists are using 80s sounds at the moment, but none capture that 80s essence like La Roux. The simplicity of the arrangements and the sounds used capture the spirit of the early 80s and in particular Vince Clarke who's style resonates throughout La Roux's album.

Over the synths we have the strong and distinctive voice of Elly Jackson - the combination results in the best 80s revival album this side of Ladytron.

Standout tracks: TocarBulletproof, TocarIn For The Kill and TocarI'm Not Your Toy

    9 Zero 7 - Yeah Ghost
Sia and Zero7 have become almost synonymous and with Sia now a bigger name than the band that allowed her to come to prominence it was inevitable that Zero7 would have to reinvent themselves to some degree. they did so with an excellent, though not entirely successful album - Yeah Ghost.

Without Sia's lyrics the songs don't have the emotional impact of previous Zero7 output, but they have compensated with a more uptempo feel and a new palette of sounds.

Standout tracks: Mr McGee, Pop Art Blue and Ghost Symbol

    8 Air - Love 2
Recent Air albums have been pretty patchy, but with Love 2 they seem to have captured some of the spirit of Moon Safari, but with a more up to date sheen.

If the album has a failing it is that it descends into tweeness in a couple of places - most notably on TocarSing Sang Sung.

Standout Tracks: TocarSo Light Is Her Footfall, TocarBe A Bee and TocarTropical Disease

7 Madness - The Liberty Of Norton Folgate
It's been a long time since Madness released a new studio album - 1999's Wonderful being the last. My first listen to any of the tracks from this album came on 'Later with Jools Holland' - the track Clerkenwell Polka in particular made me want to find out more about the album.

The album is, in fact, probably the best they have done - across 14 tracks from Overture to Clerkenwell Polka the band paints a series of portraits of London and the songwriting is a match for their best 80s material, but more mature.

But however good these tracks are, nothing really prepares you for the epic rambling final track - The Liberty Of Norton Folgate which is a masterpiece which tells the tale of the area of London called Norton Folgate alongside that of the effect of immigration in shaping London's culture and growth.

One of the great things about this track is the way the instrumentation and melodies reflect the cultures that are mentioned in the lyrics.

Standout tracks: The Liberty Of Norton Folgate (obviously), We Are London and Clerkenwell Polka

6 Tori Amos - Midwinter Graces
How brave is Tori Amos? Not only does she release two albums in one year ( the other being Abnormally Attracted To Sin), but the second is a Christmas album - almost.

As you would expect from Tori, Midwinter Graces is by no stretch of the imagination a standard interpretation of the Christmas album and though it does contain some tracks that are pretty pure carols like TocarCandle: Coventry Carol and TocarEmmanuel, much of the album has far more Pagan roots, so perhaps we should really call it a Yule album or just a seasonal album.

However we describe it, Tori has managed to inject a sad, cliché-ridden area of music with a very welcome shot of real emotion and stunning musical arrangements.

A Christmas album in my top 10? - Yeah, you got a problem with that?!!

Standout tracks: TocarStar Of Wonder, TocarPink And Glitter and the sublime TocarWinter's Carol

    5 Muse - The Resistance
I loved Black Holes and Revelations and the new album was eagerly anticipated. The Resistance is a very good album, but for most of the album it is a consolidation of their position. Noticable in the guitar tone on a number of tracks and especially on United States of Eurasia, Muse continue to produce a very Queen-like sound.

Like Madness, Muse saved the best for last. The album ends with a three part 'symphony' called Exogenesis which uses strong classical motifs to underpin some of the best music that Muse have produced - if they ever wanted to move into soundtrack work then they couldn't have made a more compelling case.

Standout Tracks: Uprising, MK Ultra, Exogenesis (Exogenesis: Symphony Part 1 (Overture), Exogenesis: Symphony Part 2 (Cross-Pollination) and Exogenesis: Symphony Part 3 (Redemption))

4 Kasabian - West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum
Third albums can be tricky beasts - on the first the artist has the best tracks they have written up to being signed available to record; on the second most settle for a few new tracks and some warmed over leftovers. The third album tends to tell you whether a band will have staying power. On this evidence Kasabian will be with us for a long while.

As soon as the guitar kicks in on TocarUnderdog you know that at the very least the disappointments of Empire are consigned to history. But if the opening track is a return to form, the rest of the album shows that Kasabian are able to craft a proper album that presents variation of tone and texture - this is not just a bunch of singles.

After the onslaught of the first four tracks we come to the heart of the album from Take Aim, which has shades of Space, through 60s influenced Thick as Thieves to Primal Scream-like closer Happiness.

Standout tracks - Don't cherry pick listen to the whole thing!!

3 - Bat for Lashes - Two Suns
So the lovely Natasha Khan returned this year with her second album and the first album that I raved about this year. Two Suns is less accessible than Fur And Gold, but is more rewarding on repeated listens, something that is reflected in the fact that at the end of the year it has the longevity to claim the number three spot.

If there's a problem with Bat for Lashes it is that people just won't let go of their feeling that Natasha Khan is a copyist. But though a track like TocarMoon And Moon certainly evokes thoughts of early Tori Amos, the variety of styles and particularly the instrumental arrangements put Bat for Lashes in a different place to the artists that comparisons are drawn against.

TocarDaniel, the lead single for the album is probably the weakest track on it, though it is the most accessible; elsewhere the pace is slower, the emotions more intense and the arrangements more complex.

Standout tracks: TocarMoon And Moon, TocarGlass and TocarSiren Song

2 - Franz Ferdiand - Tonight: Franz Ferdinand
Along with Kasabian, Franz Ferdinand had to produce album number three off the back of a second album that was much weaker than the debut.

When the opening track TocarUlysses bursts out of your speakers for the first time you know something good is happening.

On this album Franz Ferdinand have made the beats more danceable and the synths more prominent and the result is their best album so far. Most of the tracks are upbeat and festival friendly, but tracks like Send Him Away, Dream Again and Katherine Kiss Me provide variety.

On the album a fairly weak single is transformed in to an epic album track. For five minutes TocarLucid Dreams is good, it then becomes magnificent. Between 4 and 5 minutes the vocals drift out of the mix and guitars bounce off the synths - at minute five the song breaks down before building up into an epic synth instrumental that is the kind of track a good hi-fi loves. If you've only listened to a tinny mp3 of this track you will have missed 90% of it's impact.

Standout tracks: TocarLucid Dreams, TocarNo You Girls and Twilight Omens

1 Fever Ray - Fever Ray
Discovery of a new artist comes in many ways - a magazine review, a similar artist listing on last.fm, a recommendation from a friend or in the case of me and Fever Ray blind luck. I liked Ghost Symbol by Zero 7 enough to post a shout against the track praisng the vocal treatments. By chance another comment made a comparison to Fever Ray. One listen on Spotify later and I knew I had found my favourite album of the year.

A side project of Karin Dreijer Andersson of The Knife, Fever Ray is a thing of strange and dark beauty - that and some absolutely amazing vocal and synth textures.

The opening of the album is a repeating synth motif which draws you in so that when a drone joins it you are almost hypnotised by the track - when the pitch-shifted vocals of TocarIf I Had A Heart then start you are on a strange journey, but take the red pill the journey is worth following every step of the way.

One of the features of the album is the way Karins's untreated vocals are used as a counterpoint to the deeper, almost masculine, pitch-shifted ones.

Production-wise the album is an absolute joy - sounds bounce and swirl, creating a moody soundscape that frames the vocals which have a eerie desolation about them.

If there is a comparison to be made then musically I think it is to Japan, particularly on TocarWhen I Grow Up and TocarTriangle Walks.

I'm not going to give standout tracks, as with Kasabian listen to the whole album - it's stronger for not being broken down into it's constituent parts. however the essence of the album is probably captured in two tracks TocarConcrete Walls and the previously mentioned TocarWhen I Grow Up.

A couple of albums that nearly made the list:

Tori Amos - Abnormally Attracted To Sin
Tori's main album didn't quite make the list, but then as her albums have grown in length it has taken me longer to appreciate them. I'll probably be raving about it in 2011.

Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavillion
An album that has made a lot of top 10s this year. It's definitely good and promises even better things for the band's future, but I found it a little too inconsistent to make my top 10

... and one that was bought too recently for me to have made up my mind:

    Espers - III
The previous album - imaginatively titled II - is excellent. A modern day folky rock/goth band reminiscent of All About Eve. This is one is not as dark, but had I bought it earlier in the year would probably have got into the lower reaches of my top 10.

  • Podsumowanie 2009 (wciąż uaktualniane) - krótko i na temat.

    Dez 10 2009, 0h52 por Plum_Pie

    2. Faith and the Muse - ankoku butoh

Cudowna płyta. Nowoczesna, a zarazem słychać wiadome naleciałości klimatu Christian Death + niezaprzeczalnie świetny wokal Moniki Richardson. Tytuł płyty to nazwa ekspresyjnego japońskiego tańca, a krótkie instrumentale próbują nijako tworzyć odpowiedni klimat.

    3. Heaven & Hell - The Devil You Know

    4. Peter Bjärgö - A Wave of Bitterness

    6. Colosseum - Chapter 2: Numquam

Zawsze lubiłem funeral doom metal. Niechętnie starałem się poprawiać tych, którzy nazywali funeralem My Dying Bride ;) Co prawda funeralem 2009 miał być nowy Void of Silence jednak problemy z wokalistą zrobiły swoje.

    8. A Storm of Light - Forgive Us Our Trespasses

Uwielbiam tą kapelę. Łączy wszystko to co chciałbym słyszeć w post metalu.Mamy wszystko - kopa w dupę, doomowe kawalkady, świetne zgranie i melodie. Bardzo klimatyczna płyta. No i ten artwork!

    9. The Eden House - Smoke & Mirrors

Cudo. This Burning Effigy i Fields of the Nephilim, Na wokalach piękne kobiece głosy - m.in. z All About Eve czy faith & the muse.Wydawnictwo ocieka klimatem, muzyka przesycona duchem nieodżałowanych FotN.

    10.1 Atrium Carceri - Phrenitis

Nowe Atrium Carceri walczyło o prym z nowym New Risen Throne, ale dało radę ;)

"The ruinous cities of wars long past, where time itself is but a prisoner and the warlords roaming their purgatorial halls are free to destroy the very foundations of the natural order."

LOL i tony marketingowego kiczu, cóż z tego skoro wyśmienite.

10.2 Arktau Eos - Ai Ma Ra

Limitowane do 1000 sztuk 2 płyty dark ambientowej uczty, a właściwie powinienem chyba napisać - rytualne drony - eh te gatunki :P
    Odsłuch obowiązkowo wieczorem/w nocy i obowiązkowo w słuchawkach.

    Minusy muzyczne roku :

    - beznadziejne płyty tuzów martial industrialu
    - brak czasu na odsłuch większej ilości wydawnictw

  • Lyrics quiz number eight squillion...

    Out 19 2009, 22h49 por momosupermo

Name the song from the first line...

1 What is this phase that I am going through? Oh these precious years!

2 Give me time to realise my crime. Let me love and steal.

3 All you punks and all you teds, national front and natty dreads, mods, rockers, hippies and skinheads, keep on fighting till you're dead.

4 It worries me this kind of thing. How you hope to live alone and occupy your wicked hours.

5 You say, it's not what you do, it's what you're thinking of.

6 I still haven't got over it even now. I want to spend a huge amount of time on my own.

7 She rises early from bed. Runs to the mirror; the bruises inflicted in moments of fury.

8 I got the money and I got the place. You got the figure and you got the face.
Sailor - A Glass Of Champagne

9 I'll find a place somewhere in the corner. I'm gonna waste the rest of my days.

    10 I'm coming over but I won't be long. I'm coming over. I'm making a new song.

11 Behind me a caravan weighed down, with bad dreams and ghosts of apologies.

12 Answer me. Why won't you answer me? I can't recall the day that I last heard from you.

13 I've been there, done that, messed around. I'm having fun, don't put me down. I'll never let you sweep me off my feet.
    La Roux - TocarBulletproof

14 I thought we had a connection. I thought we had a good thing.

15 Is it an horrific dream? Am I sinking fast?

16 Jeannie said when she was just five years old, there was nothing happening at all.

17 Standing in the dark. Watching you blow.

18 A summer house in Texas. Searching for Siberia. Pioneering over ground.

19 Woke up in the evening to the sound of the screaming.

20 You're just a little girl with grey eyes, never mind, say something!
David Bowie - What in the World

    All About Eve

  • A Journal Entry in Two Parts - Part the Second - Recent Aural Ecstasies

    Jul 14 2009, 16h07 por sirensongs

Ah, there has been so much music I have been enjoying lately I just needed to gush about it somewhere, so here I am. This is the music that has moved me the most over the past few months.

Ava Inferi - The Blood of Bacchus - Carmen, sweet Carmen, I will never get enough of her voice!

Bella Lune - Abstracted Visions - I'm a bit behind in discovering this wonderful synthpop/dreampop act with the best little girl vocals I've heard since I discovered the Cranes.

Cantata Sangui - On Rituals And Correspondence In Constructed Realities - This is very cool avant-garde metal with no guitars, only bass. It intersperses dark and light passages very effectively. I was actually caught off guard by how much I enjoyed this!

The Eden House - Smoke & Mirrors - This may be the winner of 2009 album of the year for me. A gothic supergroup of sorts featuring members of Fields of the Nephilim, NFD, and This Burning Effigy, with lovely female vocals provided by various vocalists like Monica Richards from Faith and the Muse and Julianne Reagan from All About Eve. There is not one bad song on the album, and there is a dreamy feeling throughout that is just mesmerising. I cannot get enough of this!

Evolvent - Spiritual Confession - I'm not usually into doom metal, but this is definitely an exception. These songs are epic journeys punctuated by the gorgeous operatic vocals of Céline de Kerliviou of Ad Vitam Aeternam.

Lisa Hammer - Dakini - I was so excited about this album, and ecstatic when I saw it for sale on the Project site well before the release date. This solo album by the former vocalist of Requiem In White, The Order of The N.C.S. and Mors Syphilitica, is definitely a departure from her previous musical projects, being much more meditative, ethereal and spiritual. This is a brilliant release, and my only complaint is that she does not really use her operatic voice here. Other than that, I am extremely pleased with Dakini!

Negradonna - S/T - Negradonna are a lesser known Polish ethereal act that deserve to be more well known. Poetic and lovely, they offer tracks for free download on Last.fm, so you can see what I mean about them needing to be more well known!

Omasphere - Prélude - Prikosnovenie's latest release does not disappoint. This is very mystical and spiritual ethnic ethereal music that should appeal to fans of Rajna and Irfan. The album is breathtaking at times and listening to it is a transcendental experience.

Viola Rose - Veils of Twilight - Here is another artist who deserves to be more well known! Veils of Twilight varies through genres very fluidly from ethereal, to pop, to world, to gothic, and it's all topped by Viola's strong, passionate and earthy vocals. She's a performance artist too, and you can find out more about her, as well as listen to tracks from Veils of Twilight at her myspace page here.

    Solanaceae - S/T

    and

Unto Ashes - The Blood of My Lady

These two releases represent fine examples of mystical dark folk, and can also be seen as sister releases as Michael Laird of Unto Ashes appears on the Solanaceae and Kim Larsen of Solanaceae (also of :Of the Wand & the Moon:), guests on The Blood of My Lady. Both releases also feature versions of the song The Blood of My Lady. Simply beautiful!

  • The Eden House - debut gig @ The Luminaire 21-Apr-09

    Abr 22 2009, 13h42 por chazzyf

Tue 21 Apr – The Eden House - debut gig
As a debut show, this was interesting, but the soundman clearly had problems getting the sound right for the band and audience. Certainly, where I was stood, the band were way too loud at times and the sudden changes in volume caused me a lot of grief in my right ear. There were times when the performance was also blighted by feedback. So, not so clever on that front.

This being the band's first show the audience was mainly made up of friends and family of the band, plus the usual Goth/electro crowd, including a large representation of the 'Fields of the Nephilim' fan-club who were off their tits on some substance or other and who proceeded to be extreemly loud, rowdy and disruptive to the detriment of other people's enjoyment. After climbing on each other's backs and then holding on to one or other peices of lighting/sound equipment attached to the ceiling, I was glad to see that the equipment was firmly attached. They behaved like a bunch of complete arses IMHO.

The support act was solo singer/songwriter Valenteen who was like a dull, morose, goth version of K T Tunstall - tedious in the extreeme, I thought.

It was almost 10PM when The Eden House finally hit the stage. In their live formation, the band was made up of core members Stephen Carey, formerly of Ireland’s This Burning Effigy and Tony Pettitt, originally of Fields of the Nephilim plus drummer Simon Rippin (Fields of The Nefilim, NFD), Andy Jackson on guitar and Rab C Nesbitt, sorry Bob Loveday (of Penguin Café Orchestra, Van Morrison, and currently Bob Geldof's band) on violin and keyboards. Vocals were mainly sung by Amandine Ferrari, who occasionally duetted with Monica Richards (faith & the muse) and Evi Vine. Evi also sang a couple of songs herself. Sadly Julianne Regan (All About Eve) was unable to make the show.

The music was generally nice slowish-paced Goth rock, filled out by keyboards, samples and the violin. The female vocals were pleasant but I didn't hear anything spectacular. I'm sure that I'd enjoy them a lot more once I'm more familiar with the music and minus the dickheads in the audience.

    Setlist:
    Gods Pride (Amandine on vocals)
Iron In The Soul (Amandine on vocals)
All My Love (Amandine & Evi on vocals) - dedicated to Julianne
    Reach out (Evi on vocals)
To Believe in Something (Amandine & Monica on vocals)
Trashed Treasure (Amandine on vocals) <-- best song of the evening
Fire For You (Evi on vocals)
The Dark Half (Evi on vocals)
    Sin (Amandine on vocals)

    Encore:
Play (Amandine on vocals) <--- sounded like a Bjork song.

I picked up a copy of the album after the show, but am only just giving it, it's first spin.
