  • Best Albums of 2009*

    Dez 31 2009, 18h54 por Kieran0411

    *According to me.

If i've realised one thing this year it's that i'm a little too obsessed with music. Not necessarily a bad thing, but i know it's got to simmer down at some point. This year takes the cake for sure…, as i think this stupidly long list will prove.

Decided not to include a section of albums i didn't like… theres already too many to mention of the good stuff, so what's the point.

    In alphabetical order...

THE STANDOUTS (My absolute favourite albums of 2009)

    Artist: Alexisonfire
    Album: Old Crows/Young Cardinals

Alexisonfire are the quintessential hipster emo/screamo scene kid band-of-choice, and as such i have generally avoided them for years. Was given the album and didn't really give it much play, but the heavy rotation of the 'Young Cardinals' single on the radio eventually hooked me and made me listen again, and this is a great album. I think its funny that the scene kids will have to share their now mainstream band with noobs like me. Ah, i remember when noobs started listening to my bands….

    Artist: Alice in Chains
Album: Black Gives Way To Blue

Alice in Chains and Smashing Pumpkins were my two fave grunge-era bands, so i was more than willing to accept this no matter how average… but it turned out to be exceptionally good, which pushes it up into my standouts. The new singer doesn't add much apart from sounding like Layne Staley, which doesn't interfere with the band's original sound, so they haven't tarnished the band's name in my books, which is always my greatest fear with comebacks like these.

    Artist: The Avett Brothers
Album: I And Love And You

These are the kind of albums i love finding… alt-country gems like this that get overlooked. This album isn't overly serious, consists of beautiful folky melodies and the second half almost breaks into party mode with a few indie rock moments, which for me, gives it a bit of an edge over other alt-country releases this year.

    Artist: Baroness
    Album: Blue Record

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better than Red Album. If they improve again over this, holy shit.

    Artist: Black Math Horseman
    Album: Wyllt

Melodic stoner/doom with female vocals…. yes please. Apart from that, its also really, really, really good.

    Artist: Converge
    Album: Axe To Fall

Hardcore+Punk+Metal… sounds like the usual recipe for disaster, but this is so far above average its not even funny. The final two tracks on this album show they could probably make any genre of music and still be exceptional.

    Artist: Dark Castle
    Album: Spirited Migration

Awesome female metal vocals for this exceptional sludge metal album, a winner with me.

    Artist: Dinosaur Jr.
    Album: Farm

Aware of the slew of highly rated reviews for this, i decided to check it out. Definitely deserves the acclaim. Fantastic guitar record.

    Artist: dredg
Album: The Pariah, The Parrot, The Delusion

My first impressions of this were a mixed bag. On one hand there were some amazing songs with amazing lyrics, like 'Pariah', or 'I Don't Know' - and then there were some others that sound straight up top 40 punk-pop, particularly 'Information' that really put me off. But it was one of those albums i just had to keep listening to, now i really love the whole thing.

    Artist: Ha Ha Tonka
Album: Novel Sounds of the Nouveau South

    So damn good.

    Artist: The Handsome Family
    Album: Honey Moon

    Aw mah gaaaawd yeh.

    Artist: Kylesa
    Album: Static Tensions

Fuck me, this is fucking killer. One of my favourite albums ever!

    Artist: Little Birdy
    Album: Confetti

I've got a soft spot for Little Birdy, they write great pop songs and they've thankfully returned to their original country inspired sound, and mixed in a bit of white R&B for good measure. There's not a bad song on the album.

    Artist: Mastodon
    Album: Crack The Skye

One of my favourite bands. Crack The Skye is definitely their most cohesive, focussed album, resulting in less tracks and longer songs. I don't think i could choose a favourite album of theirs, they're all different and excellent.

    Artist: Metric
    Album: Fantasies

These songs really stood out to me this year, amongst all the other indie pop… fun songs.

    Artist: Neko Case
    Album: Middle Cyclone

Neko Case rules my world. I LOVE HER!

Artist: The Pains of Being Pure at Heart
Album: The Pains of Being Pure at Heart
Album: Higher Than the Stars [EP]

Another totally perfect record, quickly became one of my favourites ever. Totally my exact kind of pop-rock record. Elements of My Bloody Valentine, The Strokes, The Stone Roses, The Smiths and Silversun Pickups all come to mind when listening to it. Pure bliss.

They also released an EP, Higher Than the Stars, which was a bit disappointing only because the songs on it all sound kinda similar to other songs on the eponymous LP.

Artist: Ryan Bingham & the Dead Horses
    Album: Roadhouse Sun

    Another amazing alt-country discovery.

    Artist: Scale The Summit
    Album: Carving Desert Canyons

Instrumental, post-rock, progressive, with elements of metal… i think this is my favourite instrumental album ever. I don't really enjoy instrumental albums that much. There are a lot of amazing bands out there who choose this path, but my main complaint is that, for me, it just gets boring after awhile. This album never get boring and is a total blast to listen to.

    Artist: Silversun Pickups
    Album: Swoon

Carnavas is up there with my most favourite perfect albums ever, and i knew it would be a hard act to follow. No, its not as good as Carnavas. But this is still really, really good. I really love this album and it's still miles better than most stuff around at the moment, it's just that Carnavas set the bar too high and i find it hard to get too excited about this.

    Artist: a textbook tragedy
Album: Rain City State Of Mind [EP]

I have absolutely listened the dog shit out of their EP this year. I can't get enough. Something about this EP clicks with me more than the 2008 Intimidator LP did, i can't put my finger on it. It totally obliterates anything in its path, and makes it hard to downgrade to other similar hardcore technical math-metalcore bands out there… this is as good as it gets.

    Artist: Those Darlins
    Album: Those Darlins

    Country + Punk + Girls = win.

    Artist: Tucker B's
Album: Nightmares In The Key Of (((((Wow)))))

Well, finally an Aussie band that totally delivered. These guys are so slept on, its criminal. I guess that's how they can manage to produce yet another album of such sheer brilliance, because there's absolutely no pressure. I thought 2005's Chubby LP was amazing, and now this, the songs are still as punchy, catchy, unpretentious and bizarre as ever. I've always kinda thought they sound like Pixies meets Radiohead sans thom yorke. I dunno, they're just the Tucker B's. Fucking legends.

Album: True Blood - Music From The HBO Original Series [Soundtrack]

One of the best soundtracks ever! Perfect for any mood or occasion. Try it out!

  • 2009 in music, a personal overview

    Dez 31 2009, 11h47 por marco78train

Looking back on 2009 I can’t say it was a great year. Musically, nor personally. It did have its moments though. The year brought many good records, but so far I haven’t heard one that completely blew me away. I must note here that I haven’t heard many of the critics favorites yet, so I might change my mind on 2009 later on. ;-) Today, however, I can only write about what I now know.

Not until I saw The Decemberists perform their Hazards Of Love album at the Crossing Border festival it dawned on me that this was the record that impressed me most this year. The cd is very good, but live it sounded really fantastic. In fact, the concert was one of the best I ever attended, perhaps only surpassed in greatness by those of Bruce Springsteen (2008) and Ben Folds (2007).

I also liked the new and more traditional sound Alela Diane presented on her second album. I don’t think it’s a complete masterpiece, but it contains many beautiful songs. Her concert in Utrecht was another highlight in 2009. The most pleasant surprise came from A Fine Frenzy. Her debut didn’t really caught on with me, but Bomb In A Birdcage got me hooked. Then there was the beautiful Elephants… Teeth Sinking Into Heart by Rachael Yamagata, which was officially released in the Netherlands in 2009, though it actually dates from 2008. Also highly recommended are the records by Laïs Lenski, A.A. Bondy (somewhere between Josh Rouse and Ryan Adams), Madison Violet (two pretty girls singing beautiful folksongs), Marissa Nadler and Pearl Jam.

My hero Bruce Springsteen also made a very nice record, Working On A Dream, but since it doesn’t rank among his best work, I decided not to list it in my top 10. The same goes for John Mayer. I really like Battle Studies, but it doesn’t impress me as much as Continuum, which is one of my favorite records of the decade. Finally, Alexi Murdoch deserves a special mention here. His Time Without Consequence is not in my top 10, because it was already made in 2006, but since I didn’t discover it until its official Dutch release this year, it definitely deserves a few words, because it is one of my greatest discoveries of 2009.

    10 best records of 2009

    1. The Decemberists - Hazards Of Love
    2. Alela Diane - To Be Still
    3. A Fine Frenzy - Bomb In A Birdcage
    4. Rachael Yamagata - Elephants… Teeth Sinking Into Heart
    5. Rufus Wainwright - Milwaukee At Last!!!
    6. Laïs Lenski - Laïs Lenski
    7. A.A. Bondy - When The Devil’s Loose
    8. Madison Violet - No Fool For Trying
    9. Marissa Nadler - Little Hells
    10. Pearl Jam - Backspacer

I didn't see as much concerts in 2009 as in previous years, because there weren't that many artists I wanted to see and I missed out on Wilco, but I attened some truly great gigs this year.

    5 best concerts of 2009

    1. The Decemberists (The Hague, November 21)
    2. Natalie Merchant (The Hague, November 20)
    3. Emiliana Torrini (Utrecht, September 24)
    4. Lucinda Williams (Utrecht, July 10)
    5. Alela Diane (Utrecht, July 14)

Of course, 2009 wasn’t all about new music. In my case, it may even have be more about old music. My biggest discovery of the year, for example, is a guy who has already been around for more than a decade now. For some reason or other, I just could never really get into his music. This year, however, viel het kwartje, as we say in Dutch. And that is why you can find five of his records among the cd’s I added to my collection this year. According to Last.fm Release The Stars was the record I listened to most this year and Going To A Town and Tiergarten are my Top 2 songs. Bruce Springsteen is the only artist that gained more plays in my library this year.

The two best cd’s I bought this year are without a doubt the 30th anniversary edition of Bruce Springsteen’s Born To Run and Hounds Of Love (with bonustracks) by Kate Bush, since those were already among my Top 5 albums ever. Since I already had those on lp, they are not in my list of favorite pre-2009 discoveries made this year.

    These are, in alphabetical order:

The Handsome Family – Singing Bones
Alison Krauss & Union Station – New Favorite
Robert Plant & Alison Krauss – Raising Sand
Alice Russell – My Favourite Letters
    Slowdive – Souvlaki
Stars – Set Yourself On Fire
    Candi Staton – Candi Staton
Rufus Wainwright – Release the stars
Amy Winehouse – Back To Black
Betty Wright – The Platinum Collection

This was my year in music. If anybody thinks I missed out on some great music, please let me know! I wish everyone who took the time to read this a great 2010. The prospects for the new year definitely look good! ;-)

  • Loveliest Albums of 2009

    Dez 27 2009, 0h58 por rm508

    In rough order.

    20. brazos - Phosphorescent Blues
A small, plucky Austin TX outfit. Their best feature is their almost total lack of ego. Fine craftsmen of folk pop.
    Best tracks: Kid; Day Glo

    19. Socialist Leisure Party - Tactical POP! for Coffee Cadets
An eight song mini-album from ex-members of Action Painting!, offering jangle of the Fire Engines and Monochrome Set variety. Dangerously close to pastiche in fact, but whatevs, they pastiche with panache.
Best tracks: Down With the Kids; Head in the Hay

    18. Marmoset - Tea Tornado
Another terse and gently abrasive album of post-punk psychedelica from Marmoset, at once simple and baffling.
    Best tracks: Strawberry Shortcakes; Hallway

    17. The Fresh & Onlys - Grey-Eyed Girls
A lot of bands sounded like this in 2009, but The Fresh & Onlys did it best.
Best tracks: Dude's Got a Tender Heart; I'm Gonna Be Your Elevator

    16. Ramona Falls - Intuit
A Menomena offshoot with similar cut-up aesthetics, and similar levels of bombast. Not quite as successful, but a good stopgap.
Best tracks: Salt Sack; Diamond Shovel

    15. Cats on Fire - Our Temperance Movement
    Brisk and lyrical.
Best tracks: Letters From a Voyage To Sweden; Tears in Your Cup

    14. The Deep Dark Woods - Winter Hours
A more memorable folk album than this year’s effort from Magnolia Electric Co. Thanks to eagleheartt.
Best tracks: All the Money I Had is Gone, The Birds on the Bridge

    13. Jayme Stone & Mansa Sissoko - Africa to Appalachia
A collaboration between Canadian banjo player Stone and Malian kora player Sissoko. Like Otis Taylor last year, Stone was interested in exploring the African roots of the banjo, and the results are sweet and fresh.
    Best tracks: Bibi

    12. Dirty Projectors - Bitte Orca
    Mea culpa.
Best tracks: Stillness is the Move; Two Doves

    11. Bell Orchestre - As Seen Through Windows
Delightfully rich instrumental rock. Thanks again to eagleheartt.
Best tracks: Water/Light/Shifts; Air Lines/Land Lines

    10. Alasdair Roberts - Spoils
A folk traditionalist from Scotland who peppers his originals with uncanny modern touches.
Best tracks: The Flyting of Grief & Joy (Eternal Return)

    9. PHANTOGRAM - Eyelid Movies
A treat, comparing favourably with the much more widely touted xx. Thanks be to generalmalaise.
Best tracks: Mouthful of Diamonds; When I'm Small

    8. NED COLLETTE & WIREWALKER - Over the Stones, Under the Stars
Australia’s finest (and almost unknown) psych-folksinger gets a proper backing band and a harder edge, without losing his strangeness.
Best tracks: Come Clean; One Evening, In the Middle of the Road

    7. Papercuts - You Can Have What You Want
Papercuts’ greatest asset, lifting their thick, mopey, organ-dominated 60s sound, is a sense of rhythm. Even the slower tracks have a lovely rolling momentum.
Best tracks: Dictator's Lament; Future Primitive; The Wolf

    6. Bowerbirds - Upper Air
A rickety yet grand folk sound. Songs drift and metamorphose without losing drive and purpose. Excellent songwriting.
Best tracks: Beneath Your Tree; House of Diamonds; Ghost Life

    5. Alela Diane - To Be Still
A slow-grower with subtle charms. From Portland OR, naturally.
Best tracks: Dry Grass & Shadows; White As Diamonds; Every Path

    4. The Pains of Being Pure at Heart - The Pains of Being Pure At Heart
    Youth! Love! Guitars!
Best tracks: Young Adult Friction; This Love is Fucking Right!; The Tenure Itch

    3. Bill Callahan - Sometimes I Wish We Were An Eagle
One of his best, either as Smog, or as Bill.
Best tracks: Jim Cain; Rococo Zephyr

    2. The Bats - The Guilty Office
A superb return. Lushly orchestrated music from a group of confident, grown-up songwriters.
Best tracks: Castle Lights; The Orchard

    1. The Crayon Fields - All the Pleasures of the World
Completing a southern hemisphere double-act: Melbourne’s The Crayon Fields, sounding accomplished and awkward, premeditated and graceless at the same time – a late adolescent sidekick of The Guilty Office. An indie pop album with genuine and lasting charm.
Best tracks: Mirrorball; All the Pleasures of the World; Graceless

    Honourable Mentions:
Anouar Brahem - The Astounding Eyes of Rita
    Bibio - Ambivalence Avenue
Casiotone for the Painfully Alone - Vs. Children
    The Clean - Mister Pop
The Clientele - Bonfires on the Heath
Extra Golden - Thank You Very Quickly
Here We Go Magic - Here We Go Magic
    Kelly Saunders - Kelly Saunders
The Phantom Band - Checkmate Savage
    The xx – xx

    Classical:

    5. Kronos Quartet - Floodplain
A tougher-than-usual Kronos taking on an international programme, with a predominant tone of grief and pain.

    4. Henry Purcell - Ten Sonatas in Four Parts
Some of Purcell’s finest, given a virtuosic reading by the Retrospect Trio.

    3. Jonathan Harvey - Complete String Quartets
Harvey’s String Quartet No.4 with live electronics is a major achievement.

    2. Kaija Saariaho - L’amour de Loin
Award-winning opera gets an excellent debut recording.

    1. David Lang - The Little Match Girl Passion
Won Lang a Pulitzer Prize. The writing – for voice, percussion and bells – is incantatory, urgent, and highly moving.
