Step 3: Bold out the songs when someone guesses both artist and track correctly.

...and here we is, in Texas yet."

It's a shameful truth that I've lived in Texas for more than a dozen years and never been west of Mineral Wells (and Possum Kingdom State Park -- LOVE the name of that park).

Next month, that's going to change. A friend and I are driving from Dallas down to Big Bend National Park. That's a lot of driving. We're going to need music. A whole lot of music.

I'm assembling a road-trip playlist of artist who were either born in Texas or make/made their base here. My research has boggled my mind. Even without counting the music powerhouse Austin has become (which I do), this state has produced a staggering amount of talent

Right now, it's 62 artists long, with another 18 in my iTunes shopping cart, waiting for me to commit and pony up.

This is where you come in.

Who are your favorite Texas artists? If I've missed a shining star of the Texas pantheon, set me straight. I promise to give any suggestions a fair audition, even if I ultimately choose not to include them in my final picks.

The list of strong contenders, so far...

    Albert Collins
    Alison Krauss
    American Analog Set
    Ann Armstrong
    Arcade Fire
    Asleep at the Wheel
    Ben Kweller
    Billy Joe Shaver
    Black Angels
    Bob Schneider
    The Bodeans
    Bowling for Soup
    Boxcar Preachers
    Boz Scaggs
    Brave Combo
    Bruce Robison
    Buddy Holly
    Butthole Surfers
    C.J. Chenier
    Charlie Sexton
    Chris Sandoval
    Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown
    Damnations TX
    The Deathray Davies
    Delbert McClinton
    The Dixie Chicks
    Don Henley
    Doyle Bramhall
    Doyle Bramhall II
    Earlies
    Edie Brickell
    Emmylou Harris
    Frank Lee Sprague
    Gary Moore
    Gary P. Nunn
    Guy Clark
    Herb Ellis
    Hurts to Purr
    James McMurtry
    Janis Joplin
    Jimmie Vaughan
    Joel Sprayberry
    John Prine

  • Beyond Name-Checking

    Nov 25 2007, 16h55 por tadmaster

Maybe I need to allow more time for the last.fm software to calibrate... or maybe I just cannot be calibrated. Time will tell.

But I went surfing around to see what everyone else is into, and found the same patterns I have seen my whole life. People trying to force themselves into some kind of brand; people defiant about their tastes; people trying too hard NOT to fit into any particular box. Like pop music, it´s amazing how much variety can be derived from the same three chords.

But I like this new toy, and I´m curious to see what, if anything, it will say about me. So far, because I just let it go on shuffle, and it saw a lot of Dream Theater, it scrobbled me into that neighborhood; Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Metallica, etc.

Okay, so I tinkered with my music library a bit. Played some stuff by Iron & Wine I´ve been into lately. Wondered how Matthew Sweet got into my Top Ten... ah, so much for ¨shuffle¨. Still, he wouldn´t show up if I didn´t like at least some of his tunes.

Seems like a lot of white males, though... where are Tori Amos and k.d. lang? Indigo Girls? What about the jazz men? Miles Davis, and Charles Mingus... or B.B. King and Albert Collins for when I´m feeling the blues?

And let´s just see what happens when you throw all of this into a mixer and shake.

  • Rainy Day Blues - the mix

    Mar 16 2007, 19h24 por ACKthehack

So imagine pulling up roots out of the fields of cotton and peanuts and just moving in an age when you did not have any big old highways.

Moving from the heat of the delta and the deep south swamps to the cold of Chicago to the noise and confusion of New York. Now that is scary enough to do that BUT as a black man in America at the turn of the century? Fucking amazing bravery really.

I should have done this during Black History month after all its the forgotten times between Reconstruction and the start of Jim Crow and the Civil Rights movement. Its the time that no one wants to talk about. Maybe a little mention of the Harlem rennaisance and all that but not too much. No one really wants to remember Jim Crow, the lynchings and in that you miss one of the most amazing stories in America. There was this incredible migration of humanity to the point that Savannah GA actually considered a law preventing African Americans from leaving via the Savannah port for fear of losing too much cheap labor.

In regards to the social history and the recording of the impact and the story the incredible story of this migration of humanity, I don't know half of what I should know. Especially considering the impact it has had on culture and music.

In terms of music though the impact was deep. In terms of culture with Ralph Ellison and Richard Wright and Langston Hughes for examples the ideas were so powerful.

But take it to that personal level for a second. You have everything you own in a suitcase and you move up North maybe with your family and maybe not. Maybe you moved all by yourself and send money back home south.

Dusty grey suit fedora hat pulled down and all these faces of people you don't recognize when you are used to a world so small town that everyone knows who you are. And the place you are going to in Chicago is world of cold frigid wind slicing you up and still you muster up the will to go on and make another day.

Its hard to even begin to fathom what could be going on in a man's mind in that place in that time and certainly I have no clue.

So I got to thinking about all this on a rainy day putting together a new primarily electric or urban blues mix.

I had been off that style of blues for so very long. Been focused on the real country blues and roots music.

So I came back for a moment and put together this mix.

    Carissimi compatrioti,
