  • The 9513 Last.fm Chart Update (11-1-09)

    Nov 4 2009, 17h13 por Carpetbagger513

    Last.fm Top Artists
Two familiar faces are tied for #1 this week, as George Strait and Miranda Lambert both have 24 listeners. Alan Jackson is one behind to end up at #3, and the group of artists at #4 with 21 listeners includes Taylor Swift, Patty Loveless, Keith Urban and Johnny Cash. For Swift and Urban, it’s the best showing for either of them in quite some time. Perhaps Swift’s release of a recycled old album with a few new songs, photos and videos brought a few additional fans out of the woodwork. Joe Nichols makes a strong showing as well, with 17 listeners putting him at #17. Lorrie Morgan, despite the fact that Amazon was giving away her new album for spare change and pocket lint, ended up with 11 listeners, actually one down from last week. Lyle Lovett, who was the beneficiary of a similar bargain with his new album, had 10 listeners, an increase for him. Hayes Carll ended up at #21 with 16 listeners, the best of the Americana bunch, with Steve Earle (13) trailing.

    Last.fm Top Albums
There is still a sizable gap between Revolution, with 18 listeners, and the rest of the field. Fearless (impossible to tell if it’s the Regular, Platinum or Karaoke version – yes, there is a karaoke version) came in at #2 with 13. Brad Paisley was next with American Saturday Night (12). Again, the grouping at #4 has a little something for everyone. There’s Justin Townes Earle’s Midnight At The Movies for the Americana fans, Lee Ann Womack’s Call Me Crazy and Strait’s It Just Comes Natural for mainstream fans, and Carrie Underwood’s Some Hearts for American Idol fans. Play On made it up to #16 despite not being released until tomorrow, so that’s bound to have a big showing in next week’s charts. Elsewhere, as further proof that you can get good stuff for free, the T For Texas T From Tennessee sampler that’s available as a free download from Amazon had 6 listeners.

    Last.fm Top Singles
We have a dethroning, as Lady Antebellum has the #1 track, with “Need You Now” having 9 listeners. It’s still a Lambert-centric Top 10, with “TocarDead Flowers,” “TocarThe House That Built Me” and “TocarWhite Liar” all having 8 listeners, but the cracks are showing. The non-Ran tracks in the rest of the Top 10 include Kellie Pickler’s “Didn’t You Know How Much I Loved You,” Underwood’s “TocarCowboy Casanova,” Eli Young Band’s “TocarWhen it Rains,” and David Nail’s “TocarRed Light.” Any Top 10 with a Kellie Pickler song in it is pretty special already, but “Casanova” puts it over the top. Morgan’s classic covers album has six listeners, and their favorites included “TocarWine Me Up,” “TocarBy The Time I Get To Phoenix” and “TocarCry.”

    Billboard Country Songs
It took 18 weeks, but Zac Brown Band’s “Toes” made it to #1, giving the band two #1s and a #2 to start its major-label career. The other big jump in the Top 5 was that “Welcome To The Future” moved from #4 to #2. Toby Keith leaped from #55 to #39 with “Cryin’ For Me (Wayman’s Song), and Strait’s “Twang” jumped from #30 to #24. “TocarBackwoods” by Justin Moore moved from #50 to #42, because it’s been almost 10 minutes since a song about country living was a hit. Thank God “Southern Voice” keeps moving up the charts, up to #16 this week, because the country radio audience will be experiencing withdrawals.

    Billboard Country Albums
While the single continues to gain airplay, Tim McGraw debuted at #1 with Southern Voice (the album), which made it to #2 on the Billboard Top 200. Swift will likely have her one-week stay at #2 before Fearless, or at least some version of it, goes back to #1. Revolution stays in the Top 5, moving from #4 to #5, and Lady Antebellum moves from #7 to #6 after 80 weeks on the chart. It’s the second-longest tenure for any album on the charts. Lyle Lovett debuted at #8 with Natural Forces, ensuring that the Top 10 has at least one artist that makes the Taylor Swift fans say, “Who?” Keep On Loving You by Reba McEntire moved up from #16 to #13 and was the sales gainer for the week. The other notable debut was Bomshel’s Fight Like a Girl. Actually, any record that gets released by Curb Records and isn’t a greatest hits package is a notable debut.

    Americana Music Association Chart
Robert Earl Keen made it to #1 with The Rose Hotel, with its 405 spins putting it at 2,234 total spins since its release. Lovett, Keen’s college roommate, moved up to #4 from #8. Corb Lund’s Losin’ Lately Gambler moved from #19 to #12, and his success will hopefully mean that the next time I see him live, there will be more than 20 people in the room. Son Volt’s American Central Dust moves back from #33 to #37, but its 5,629 total spins make it the most played record in the Top 40. The Mississippi Sheiks, an early era blues-type band from the 1930s, have earned a tribute album, which debuted at #28. Things About Comin’ My Way includes contributions from Carolina Chocolate Drops, Danny Barnes, Bruce Cockburn and North Mississippi All Stars, among others.

    Freebie of the Week
The Bee's Knees is a quartet from Worcester, Mass. The band’s influences on its Myspace page range from The Byrds and Carl Perkins to International Submarine Band and Paul Westerberg. Despite the fact that they misspell Bill Monroe’s name, that probably puts them in the Americana realm. They have several songs available on Last.fm for download. Check out “TocarKristi,” “TocarDear Carpenter” and “TocarDown The Line” in particular.

  • Top 35 albums (with some very limited commentary as well)

    Out 10 2009, 21h31 por david5970

Thought I'd post this chart with some added commentary from me to make it a little bit more interesting than the usual long laundry list that usually gets posted on these journals from time to time.

Kind of interesting to note that there are a number of artists in my top 25 list, that aren't featured here at all, those being Johnny Cash; Beyoncé; Girls Aloud; Alan Jackson; Dixie Chicks (those actually being in my top ten overall); Mariah Carey; Kylie Minogue; Rihanna; Vince Gill; Clint Black; Gwen Stefani; Christina Aguilera; Destiny's Child; and Avril Lavigne.

(14 in all, or over half of my top 25 not represented in my top 35 albums)

I also guess some of the Greatest Hits albums may have skewed the results as well. Still, here is the list:

    david5970's top albums (overall)
    1. Garth Brooks - The Hits (28) For all the essential Garth Brooks songs2. Dusty Springfield - Classics & Collectibles (1) (24)
Dusty was just fantastic when you look at some of the songs on this album: TocarI Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself, TocarI Only Want To Be With You, TocarThe Look Of Love. The whole thing is just pure class of the highest order. 3. Alanis Morissette - Jagged Little Pill (22)
One of the greatest albums of the nineties, I actually rediscovered it a little while ago. Of course, I love all the hit songs from it, but had forgotten just how great the rest of the album was as well. 4. Nat King Cole - The Ultimate Collection (21)
Just some effortless singing at the piano. TocarSmile currently my most played from this album is just an example. 5. Elvis Presley - Elvis: 30 #1 Hits (20)
Elvis: do you really want me to say anything more? Do I need to say anything more? :) 6. Trisha Yearwood - Songbook: A Collection of Hits (20)
Great singer; nice collection of good songs 7. ABBA - Gold: Greatest Hits (19)
Just essential for those moments that only ABBA seem to do, fantastic unadulterated pop that just makes you smile and dance. What can be better than that? 8. The Mavericks - Trampoline (18)
Good fun album - always had a soft spot for TocarDolores 9. Texas - The Greatest Hits (18)
Got a lot of plays from my library radio with TocarSummer Son with 12 plays, although it may not be my favorite song of theirs. Go figure! LOL 10. Madness - Divine Madness (17)
TocarLovestruck is an underrated gem. 11. The Corrs - The Best of the Corrs (17)
Have always loved the Corrs, just loved how they were seemingly fresh and different than anything else around at the turn of the millenium.12. Bananarama - The Greatest Hits Collection (17)
Unadulterated pop again, this time from the SAW stable. Hey, I grew up with this stuff in the late 80s as a tweenager. 13. Garbage - Garbage (16)
Never really appreciated them that much until years later when I just put this CD on and realised what I might have missed. 14. Liz Phair - Exile in Guyville (16)
The more I listen, the more I like. Discovered her by reading an article in some magazine in the mid-90s and deciding just to take a chance on hearing some of her stuff. Kind of a diversion from my usual listening habits at the time but happy that I did. TocarFuck and Run is amazing.15. The Mavericks - Music for All Occasions (16)
Another Mavericks album, boy, they were good :) 16. Black Eyed Peas - Monkey Business (16)
TocarDon't Phunk With My Heart and TocarDon't Lie just remind me of driving through Atlanta listening to Star 94 in 2005. 17. Mary Chapin Carpenter - Come On Come On (16)
The Hard Way, He Thinks He'll Keep Her, Passionate Kisses, I Take My Chances; just love them one and all! 18. Dean Martin - The Very Best of Dean Martin (16)
Come on, it's Dino. You can't get much cooler than that. 19. Manfred Mann - The Best Of Manfred Mann (16)
Great sixties pop music. Pretty Flamingo. 20. Deana Carter - Did I Shave My Legs For This? (16)
Strawberry Wine and the title track. 21. Matt Monro - The Very Best of Matt Monro (16)
Perfect combination of a good singer and good songs. 22. Kelis - Kelis Was Here (15)
Actually surprised that this album is in here, as Tasty is my favorite album of hers. Still TocarLil Star is a good track 23. P!nk - Try This (15)
P!nk is one of my favorite artists, although this isn't necessarily my favorite album of hers (that's I'm Not Dead) 24. Roy Orbison - The Very Best of Roy Orbison (14)
The Big O - nothing more needs to be said. One of the best and most distinctive voices in the history of pop music. 25. Mindy McCready - If I Don't Stay the Night (14)
Have always liked Mindy ever since she first burst onto the scene. Just makes me wonder how successful she may have been now if she hadn't had all those problems that have dogged her. Still, there are some great and often sadly now forgotten songs in her back catalogue. 26. S Club 7 - Sunshine (14)
Don't Stop Movin' to the S Club beat. Good unadulterated 2000s pop. 27. Harry Connick, Jr. - Forever For Now (14)
Recipe For Love and You Didn't Know Me When are two of my favorite songs of his. 28. Pam Tillis - All of This Love (14)
TocarDeep Down and TocarBetty's Got a Bass Boat have seven plays each. 29. Sugababes - Taller in More Ways (13)
Push The Button and Ugly are two great songs. They made some of the best pop music in the 2000s.30. Paramore - RIOT! (13)
To be honest, just getting into Paramore; loving this album. 31. Restless Heart - Greatest Hits (13)
This is in the list just because I absolutely adore TocarWhen She Cries 32. Aaron Tippin - Ultimate Aaron Tippin (13)
There Ain't Nothin' Wrong With The Radio has got the most plays in my library, although TocarTen Pound Hammer is perhaps my fave song, just good fun. 33. All Saints - All Saints (13)
Absolutely LOVE All Saints. favorite track off their debut album was/is Bootie Call . Saw them perform at a wind and rainsoaked Radio One Roadshow in Blackpool. Wish they were still recording together, it's so damn annoying thinking that they have deprived us of more All Saints material (for evidence just check out Appleton. Absolutely adored Melanie Blatt. Those lips.... :)~~~~~ LOL 34. Gretchen Peters - The Secret of Life (13)
Isn't TocarOn A Bus To St. Cloud one of the greatest songs ever written? Actually prefer this version to Trisha's as well.35. Danity Kane - Welcome to the Dollhouse (13)
More of a discovery on last.fm than anything else... was just recommended to me on this site.

  • The 9513 Last.fm Chart Update (8-9-09)

    Ago 14 2009, 14h26 por Carpetbagger513

Somehow, The 9513 Top Artist chart just doesn’t look right if it doesn’t have a guy in a cowboy hat as the #1 artist. Or on the occasions where Sugarland is on top, a guy in a dorky fedora. This isn’t one of those occasions, as George Strait is far and away the #1 artist for the week, with 28 listeners. The duo of Jennifer Nettles and company ended up in second place with 23 listeners, right behind Lee Ann Womack, Miranda Lambert and Alan Jackson with 22. Reba McEntire and Jamey Johnson tied at #6 with 21.

Looking at the Top 20 as a whole, it’s a decidedly experienced group. We have five artists who have made their debuts in the ’00s: Sugarland, Lambert, Johnson, Carrie Underwood and Hayes Carll (both in at #16 with 17 listeners). We’ve got a fairly even split between artists of the ’90s and those of the ’80s, and then there are a few that debuted in the ’70s and back. Given the fact that we’ve got a pretty good cross-section of country fans, from current mainstream listeners to New Traditionalist fans to alt-country music geeks, it doesn’t seem like too many of the ‘00 artists have yet made a real impact across the board. It’s still too early to tell, though; the next Reba may be struggling to reach the Top 40 right now. Speaking of, Ashley Monroe had 10 listeners and Ashton Shepherd had 9.

In what is likely a first for the group, the #1 album hasn’t even been released yet. Johnson’s new single, “My Way To You,” had the same title tagged for the album name, and 14 listeners put it in at #1. Whether or not that’s the name of the final album is unknown, but it’s already a hit around these parts. Sugarland’s Twice The Speed Of Life and Dixie Chicks‘ Fly tied for second place with 12 listeners, and Lambert’s Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Womack’s Call Me Crazy and Trisha Yearwood’s Heaven, Heartache And The Power Of Love rounded out the Top 5 with 11 listeners. The group of albums at #7 with 10 listeners included Carll’s Trouble In Mind, Patty Loveless‘ On Your Way Home and Womack’s I Hope You Dance. Gloriana’s self-titled debut had 6 listeners, which is the same number of hair and makeup stylists that the quartet takes out on the road with them.

Given the results of the albums chart, it won’t come as any surprise that the #1 track, with 17 listeners, was Johnson’s “My Way To You.” It was pretty much a slaughter, but I don’t know if enough people will listen to it week after week to keep it around. Then again, one of the songs at #2 was Lambert’s “Dead Flowers,” which is another lead single off a to-be-released album, so maybe it will have some staying power. The other #2 song, with 9 listeners, was The Wreckers’ “TocarLeave the Pieces.” The rest of the Top 10 is a mix of perennial favorites with new appearances. Reba’s “Consider Me Gone,” Garth’s “Callin’ Baton Rouge” and Jason Aldean’s “Big Green Tractor” are among the new songs. And while they missed out on the Top 10, Jypsi’s “I Don’t Love You Like That” and Kellie Pickler’s “TocarBest Days of Your Life” both had 6 listeners, a good showing for two acts that don’t normally chart much here.

Freebie of the Week: If you’re a Facebook user and are a fan of iTunes, Apple will reward you by periodically sending out free codes for sampler CDs. Generally, they’ve been about 15 tracks, about half of which I’ve kept, and have focused mostly on indie rock and world music. But this week, there’s a code netting you a free download of artists who performed at Lollapalooza, including… Eric Church. Yes, Eric Church was the sole representation for the Nashville-based country music world at one of the largest outdoor festivals in the country. He was right between Bon Iver and the Heartless Bastards in the schedule, FYI. So, go become a fan and get a free download of “Smoke A Little Smoke” and 14 other songs.

  • 50 Questions About My Top 50

    Jul 21 2009, 4h54 por Alter_Idem

Decided to to Top 50 Artists Overall. I joined 31 Jan 2005.

[1.] How did you get into 29?
    Jack Johnson
I'm sure, like everyone else, I heard TocarFlake on the radio.

[2.] What was the first song you ever heard by 22?
    David Bowie
Couldn't 22 have been easier? I'm assuming it was something from Labyrinth that made me love him. I seemed to be the only one growing up who had heard of that movie. Suddenly I'm an adult and everyone knows it. Odd.

    [3.] What’s your favorite lyric by 33?
Two 33s: Alison Krauss & Union Station & Counting Crows
The smile on your face lets me know that you need me
There's a truth in your eyes sayin' you'll never leave me
The touch of your hand says you'll catch me if ever I fall
You say it best when you say nothing at all
TocarWhen You Say Nothing at All

    I will paint my picture
Paint myself in blue and red and black and gray
All of the beautiful colors are very very meaningful
    Grey is my favorite color
    I felt so symbolic yesterday
    If I knew Picasso
I would buy myself a gray guitar and play
    TocarMr. Jones
(I actually prefer TocarBig Yellow Taxi , but it's a cover so I don't count it.)

[4.] What is your favorite album by 49?
    Hoobastank
Quite frankly, I'm confused as to how they're that high. I believe I owned both Hoobastank and The Reason. Don't think I ever listened much to the latter. Ah, yes, it was the track TocarCrawling In The Dark

[5.] How many albums by 13 do you own?
    Marcy Playground
One. This is a sore point. I miss this band. One of the best live shows I've ever seen.

[6.] What is your favorite song by 50?
    Kevin Sharp
Tossup between TocarNobody Knows and Population 4000 Minus 1. The first is the one that everyone knows by him. The second is written about my hometown. Actually, I like most of that album.

[7.] Is there a song by 39 that makes you sad?
    Tracy Lawrence
Most of his stuff makes me think. TocarTime Marches On probably provokes emotion the most.

[8.] What is your favorite album by 15?
    Everclear
So Much for the Afterglow by far. I can listen to every track but one over and over and over again.

[9.] What is your favorite song by 5?
    Garth Brooks
All of the above. Right now we'll go with TocarStanding Outside the Fire .

[10.] Is there a song by 6 that makes you happy?
    Maroon 5
    TocarHarder To Breathe

[11.] What is your favorite album by 40?
Another Tie: The Wallflowers: Bringing Down The Horse (duh)
And Diamond Rio: Well, I own Love a Little Stronger, so we'll go with that one.

[12.] What is your favorite song by 10?
    Adema
    TocarThe Way You Like It

[13.] What is a good memory you have involving 30?
    Reba McEntire
Not sure I have any. The first track I loved was, of course, TocarFancy, even if I didn't get it at the time.

[14.] What is your favorite song by 38?
    The Union Underground
TocarTurn Me On "Mr. Deadman", though all of ...An Education in Rebellion frickin rocks.

[15.] Is there a song by 19 that makes you happy?
19 is disney. We'll go with "yes."

[16.] How many times have you seen 25 live?
    George Michael
    None. *sad face*

[17.] What is the first song you ever heard by 23?
    Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
I have no clue. robertpalmer was way into them, so I got the entire Clap Your Hands Say Yeah album and listened to it. I'm still not sure how I feel about them.

[18.] What is your favorite album by 11?
    Sawyer Brown
This Thing Called Wantin' and Havin' It All
Really hoping to see them live next month. Need $25. Might be impossible.

[19.] Who is a favorite member of 1?
    Nine Inch Nails
    Trent Reznor without comment.

[20.] Have you ever seen 14 live?
    Tennis Pro
No, and I'm a little bitter about it having lived so damn close to Seattle. Now that I'm back near Portland, hope has been restored.

[21.] What is a good memory involving 27?
    System of a Down
It's not necessarily "good" but I do have a memory that directly involves TocarChop Suey!. I was driving to work one morning listening to the radio station I always did with the annoying morning DJs. They mention something about a plane and a building and then play TocarChop Suey!. A commercial comes on afterward and I start flipping radio stations. Everyone is talking about planes. The date was September 11, 2001.

I thought the morning DJs on my usual station were just playing a joke. The lyrics "I cry when angels deserve to die" have struck me ever since.

[22.] What is your favorite song by 16?
    Nirvana
The Man Who Sold The World and TocarLake Of Fire, but they're both covers. Defaults to TocarSmells Like Teen Spirit.

[23.] What is the first song you ever heard by 47?
No 47, so we'll go with all the 46s:
    12 Stones
Must be TocarCrash, the first track on the album 12 Stones because I bought it after hearing the lead singer on TocarBring Me To Life. (Get it?)

    Johnny Cash
Oh hell if I know. I grew up listening to this crap. The one that made me sit up and take notice again was TocarHurt one day while flipping past CMT.

    Our Lady Peace
    Finally an easy one: TocarClumsy.

[24.] What is your favorite album by 18?
    Coal Chamber
    Chamber Music

    (holy crap, I'm only halfway???)

[25.] What is your favorite song by 21?
    R.E.M.
    Losing My Religion

[26.] What is the first song you ever heard by 26?
    Good Charlotte
TocarLittle Things. I saw the music video on MTV or MuchMusic before I ever heard them on the radio. I own Good Charlotte with the original cover. Fads ruin everything.

[27.] What is your favorite album by 3?
    Paul Simon
If I had The Paul Simon Collection: On My Way, Don't Know Where I'm Goin' on tape, I would have replaced it at least a dozen times I've listened to it so much.

[28.] What is your favorite song by 2?
The Presidents of the United States of America
Don't make me choose! Hmm... TocarLove Everybody

[29.] What was the first song you ever heard by 32?
    Powerman 5000
    TocarWhen Worlds Collide

[30.]. What is your favorite song by 8?
    Bad Religion
    Sorrow

[31.] How many times have you seen 17 live?
    No Doubt
    Zero. I'm okay with that.

[32.] Is there a song by 44 that makes you happy?
    Live
Actually, no. I do love TocarLightning Crashes, of course.

[33.] What is your favorite album by 12?
    Alan Jackson
    The Greatest Hits Collection
I apparently listen to a lot of compilation CDs.

[34.] What is the worst song by 45?
    Matchbox Twenty
I adored Yourself or Someone Like You to the point where I bought it twice when it went missing. I haven't been moved by anything they've done since.

[35.] What was the first song you ever heard by 34?
    No 34. 35 is TLC.
I assume I heard TocarWaterfalls first.

[36.] What is your favorite album by 48?
No 48 and I covered this with 46 and 49.

[37.] How many times have you seen 42 live?
    Hootie and the Blowfish
Zero. Though I'd see Darius Rucker now that he's country.

[38.] What is your favorite song by 36?
    Alanis Morissette
    TocarHands Clean

    Travis Tritt
    Tell Me I Was Dreaming

[39.] What was the first song you ever heard by 28?
    No 28. 27s: System of a Down
That I associated with "this is System of a Down" was TocarChop Suey!

    Stone Temple Pilots
Hell if I know. I wasn't into this music when they were big so I heard it all when I started listening to this sort of music. If that makes sense.

[40.] What is your favorite album by 7?
    Richard Cheese
Most songs I listen to seem to be off Tuxicity. I don't listen to him by album.

[41.] Is there a song by 31 that makes you happy?
No 30. 31 is Ben Folds Five
TocarSong for the Dumped and TocarBattle of Who Could Care Less make me smile.

[42.] What is your favorite album by 41?
No 41. One 40 and both 42s only ever put out one hit album each (and I owned all 3) and I talked about the other 40 already, so I'm not bothering with this question.

[43.] What is your favorite song by 24?
    Using 1 of the 23s:
    Green Day
    Probably Redundant.

[44.] What is a good memory you have involving 46?
Do people really have memories involving music? Besides my ex-husband? I really don't. The System of a Down memory mentioned previously was a fluke that took thousands of people dying.

[45.] What is your favorite song by 35?
    TLC
I'll always stop flipping radio stations for Unpretty. Always.

[46.] Is there a song by 9 that makes you happy?
    Toby Keith
TocarShould've Been A Cowboy, among many others. This is happy music.

[47.] What is your favorite album by 4?
    Godsmack
    Godsmack. Easily.

[48.] Who is a favorite member of 37?
There is no 37. Just like the spoon.

[49.] What is the first song you ever heard by 43?
I haven't mentioned Cherry Poppin' Daddies at 42.
Zoot Suit Riot, just like everybody else.

[50.] How many albums do you own by 20?
    Crosby, Stills & Nash
One, but Last.fm counts it as two. Carry On (disc 1) & Carry On (disc 2). I bought it when I ended up with CSN tickets and realized I wasn't sure what they sang.

God damn, that took forever and ended up being not that interesting to me.

  • Alan Jackson brings 'Summertime Blues' to BamaJam

    Jun 9 2009, 16h45 por pinetree99

    BamaJam Music & Arts Festival

It's hard to believe Alan Jackson's been at it for over two decades, but think about it--his first album came out in 1987; he made his chart debut in '89; and here he is, headlining BamaJam's Friday night showcase, and he's still reigning as one of Nashville's megastars.

A neotraditionalist at heart, he plays a straight-up honky-tonk-based music that gives props to heroes like Haggard, Jones, and other mid-century icons (witness his album Under the Influence, which included such old-school gems as "TocarPop a Top" and "Farewell Party"). Yet he's no throwback--this is music made by and for contemporary ears. It's not watered down, but the edges are certainly smooth. Songs like "Gone Country" (his BamaJam opener) and his hit cover of "Summertime Blues" are catchy as hell but for the most part inoffensive--which is just how most fans want things, and part of why the reserved, good-natured, long 'n' lean Jackson has enjoyed such longevity. OK, he's a damn fine singer, an honest love of country music, and has a crack band to back him up--all of which was in full effect on the (thankfully rain-free) BamaJam stage Friday night.

  • The 9513 Last.fm Chart Update (5-31-09)

    Jun 5 2009, 15h48 por Carpetbagger513

So much for thinking that a two-hour special devoted to George Strait would make him the sure-fire #1 artist on the charts this week. The best he could do was tie for fourth with Patty Loveless at 22 listeners. Sugarland is on top this week with 24 listeners, and Alan Jackson and Johnny Cash are in second place with 23. The Artist of the ’00s did manage to beat the Artists of the ’90s (Garth Brooks with 21 listeners), ’80s (Alabama, 8 ), ’70s (Loretta Lynn, 9) and ’60s (Marty Robbins, 5) at least.

Alright, so who’s going to be the artist of the ’10s, then? Sugarland? They’ve got some momentum already, but the odds of Jennifer Nettles not going solo at some point are slim. The other artists in the Top 10 include Brad Paisley (20 listeners), George Jones and Lee Ann Womack, (19 each) and Tim McGraw (18). Of those, it would seem that Paisley stands the best chance of having a good decade-long run. You can’t rule out either Carrie Underwood (15) or Taylor Swift (14), of course, though the fact that this Artist of the Decade award isn’t open to popular vote might hurt them in the long run. Maybe it’s someone who’s just starting to make an impact in country music or is still standing in the shadows. Jason Aldean (15)? Bomshel (somewhere between 0 and 2)? If you’d like, post your pick in the comments section and then bookmark this page for reference in 10 years’ time.

On the Top Albums Chart, Sugarland takes the top spot with Love On The Inside, along with perennial favorite Call Me Crazy from Lee Ann Womack (13 listeners apiece). Right behind them were Fearless from Taylor Swift (12) and Sounds So Good by Ashton Shepherd (11). Strait had Somewhere Down in Texas and Troubador in the Top 10 with 10 listeners each. Just outside of the Top 10 was That Lonesome Song by Jamey Johnson, which I finally got around to buying last week. If only the country blogs had written more about the guy; I would have picked it up a lot earlier if I knew it was that good. Appropos of nothing, kudos to Johnson for making sure scraggly beards don’t become the sole property of indie folk singers. Take that, Iron & Wine guy.

TocarAmarillo By Morning – the George Strait version – was the Top Track of the week, with 8 people listening to it. I’m trying to decide if John Rich’s rendition in the tribute concert made them nostalgic for the original version, or if they listened to it to clear the Rich version out of their heads. Troubador also made the Top 10 with 6 listeners. Ashton Shepherd’s small but mighty fan base gave her three tracks in the Top 10. Also featured in the Top 10 are future Grand Ole Opry members Montgomery Gentry with TocarMy Town and non-Opry member Lee Ann Womack (wrap your head around that) with TocarLast Call. Keith Urban, last seen on TV doing a pretty good job singing Marty Robbins‘ songs, had his decidedly non-Robbins song TocarKiss A Girl in the Top 10 as well. To continue our Strait theme, we had three people each listen to “Walk Of Life” by Shooter Jennings and Dire Straits. I have nothing against Shooter, and I’m all for artists singing whatever they want to sing, but I don’t know why anyone would pick his completely average cover version when the original song is pretty much perfect.

For free music this week, check out a couple of songs from John Paul Keith & the One Four Fives. According to his Last.fm bio, he’s spent his career being this close to having some major breakthroughs (being a member of the V-Roys, touring with Ryan Adams) and came even closer to retiring from music altogether. That would have been a shame, as the two songs available for download on Last.fm, “Lookin’ For a Thrill” and “TocarOtherwise,” are pretty good. They sort of remind me of Marty Stuart’s music – catchy, nice lead guitar, and less than 2:30 long. Check them out, and thanks for reading.

  • The 9513 Last.fm Chart Update (5-24-09)

    Mai 27 2009, 15h57 por Carpetbagger513

It can take years for a singer’s career to build and grow before they become a major, chart-topping sensation. The end of that phase of a singer’s career can happen almost instantaneously. Sometimes it’s in the choice of albums they make. Patty Loveless was still producing Top 20 hits when she went into bluegrass mode. Since then, her singles have gone unplayed, and she’s now doing her own thing on an independent label. Sometimes it’s the fact that they refused to stay young. Dwight Yoakam’s career as a top-charting country singer essentially ended when he turned 40 years old, and I’m convinced that the two events are related. The Dixie Chicks (Saddam’s Angels) and Garth Brooks (Chris Gaines) require no further explanation. I suspect that in some sub-basement of a media empire headquarters, there are two lists of artists, “Relevant” and “Irrelevant.” Make one wrong move–put your artistic ambitions ahead of commercial demands, say something dumb, age another year–and you may find yourself on the wrong list and off the airwaves in a heartbeat.

Alan Jackson, this week’s top artist with 21 listeners, has managed to avoid these career killers. Not only has he had the audacity to be 50 years old in the Taylor Swift Era, but he’s also dared to record a covers album and a gospel album midway through a viable career instead of waiting until he got dropped from his major label record deal like you’re supposed to do. He even had an album produced by Alison Krauss in an era when country radio likes to pretend she doesn’t exist outside of Brad Paisley duets.

Just check out some of our other Top 10 singers who are Jackson’s contemporaries: Loveless (20 listeners), Trisha Yearwood (19), Yoakam (17) and Brooks (17). He outlasted them all, radio-wise. It’s not that he’s more talented, though maybe he’s been more consistent in what he’s recorded over the last 20 years. Whatever he’s done, there is a very short list of modern singers who’ve had the kind of career he’s had and a lot of up-and-comers who’d love to know his secrets.

Additionally, as further proof that our group’s collective memory dates to well before 1989 or so, Merle Haggard (18 listeners) tied with the likes of Miranda Lambert, Paisley and Lee Ann Womack for 4th on the list.

Over on the Top Albums chart, Sounds So Good by Ashton Shepherd is #1 with 13 listeners. According to Billboard, the last time this album was on its Top Country Albums chart was March 28 of this year. It spent 54 weeks on the chart and peaked at #16. Is The 9513 group better than Billboard? Well, we’ve also got three Sugarland albums and Taylor Swift’s Fearless in the Top 5, so the answer is probably, “Not yet.” But the combination of those albums and things like the Dixie Chicks’ Taking the Long Way Home (#8 with 9 listeners) and Joey + Rory’s The Life Of A Song (#15 with 8) is a nicely balanced selection.

The singles chart is dominated by Lambert’s TocarDead Flowers, with nine listeners. I believe this is the first time that a song that’s currently unavailable on Last.fm has been at the top of the charts, so people must not mind the fact that downloading this song (legally) costs 30 cents more than most songs. George Jones‘ TocarWhite Lightning and Martina McBride’s TocarIndependence Day are tied for #2 with six listeners each. Who says country music fans only care about positive, socially acceptable music these days? Ashley Monroe’s album, Satisfied, came out last week after a long debacle that you only find with a major label, and a couple of her songs, TocarPain Pain and That’s Why We Call Each Other Baby, were part of the #4 logjam with five listeners. We’ve got three Lambert songs, three Sugarland songs and two Swift songs in there also, along with Jackson’s TocarEverything I Love, Jamey Johnson’s TocarHigh Cost Of Living and Keith Whitley’s Don’t Close Your Eyes.

For the second week in a row, I’m writing about something Wilco related. I had the chance to see Jeff Tweedy and Jay Bennett perform as a duo at a Chicago festival a few years ago. They mostly focused on the Woodie Guthrie Mermaid Avenue songs, as well as a couple from the Summerteeth album. Knowing some of the behind the scenes drama that was taking place at the time, it’s a wonder that they shared the same stage together, but they were thoroughly professional. Tweedy did all of the talking, cracked a few jokes and played the worst harmonica solo I have ever heard from a professional musician. Bennett played what seemed like a different instrument for each song, and he played every single one of them like an ace. As someone who’s tried to play a guitar and struggled to get one chord to sound like it should, I’ve come to realize that there’s skill you can learn and talent you’re just born with, and Jay Bennett was blessed with God-given talent.

Just before I started writing this piece, I read his obituary online. He died over the weekend at the age of 45. So for the freebie of the week, here’s a Jay Bennett album, Whatever Happened I Apologize. I’ve only just downloaded it myself, so all I know about this album is what’s on Rock Proper’s Web site. The album was apparently written, arranged and performed by Bennett himself, with a few exceptions. Of the songs I heard, “The Engines Are Idle” starts off with a weird electronic percussion track, but Bennett’s guitar and vocals come in and turn it into a lovely and sad folk song. “Hank” is apparently his mandatory Hank Williams ode and is better than most iterations. He’s also got a couple of free tracks on his Last.fm page.

    Thanks for reading.
