  • The 9513 Last.fm Chart Update (5-31-09)

    Jun 5 2009, 15h48 por Carpetbagger513

So much for thinking that a two-hour special devoted to George Strait would make him the sure-fire #1 artist on the charts this week. The best he could do was tie for fourth with Patty Loveless at 22 listeners. Sugarland is on top this week with 24 listeners, and Alan Jackson and Johnny Cash are in second place with 23. The Artist of the ’00s did manage to beat the Artists of the ’90s (Garth Brooks with 21 listeners), ’80s (Alabama, 8 ), ’70s (Loretta Lynn, 9) and ’60s (Marty Robbins, 5) at least.

Alright, so who’s going to be the artist of the ’10s, then? Sugarland? They’ve got some momentum already, but the odds of Jennifer Nettles not going solo at some point are slim. The other artists in the Top 10 include Brad Paisley (20 listeners), George Jones and Lee Ann Womack, (19 each) and Tim McGraw (18). Of those, it would seem that Paisley stands the best chance of having a good decade-long run. You can’t rule out either Carrie Underwood (15) or Taylor Swift (14), of course, though the fact that this Artist of the Decade award isn’t open to popular vote might hurt them in the long run. Maybe it’s someone who’s just starting to make an impact in country music or is still standing in the shadows. Jason Aldean (15)? Bomshel (somewhere between 0 and 2)? If you’d like, post your pick in the comments section and then bookmark this page for reference in 10 years’ time.

On the Top Albums Chart, Sugarland takes the top spot with Love On The Inside, along with perennial favorite Call Me Crazy from Lee Ann Womack (13 listeners apiece). Right behind them were Fearless from Taylor Swift (12) and Sounds So Good by Ashton Shepherd (11). Strait had Somewhere Down in Texas and Troubador in the Top 10 with 10 listeners each. Just outside of the Top 10 was That Lonesome Song by Jamey Johnson, which I finally got around to buying last week. If only the country blogs had written more about the guy; I would have picked it up a lot earlier if I knew it was that good. Appropos of nothing, kudos to Johnson for making sure scraggly beards don’t become the sole property of indie folk singers. Take that, Iron & Wine guy.

TocarAmarillo By Morning – the George Strait version – was the Top Track of the week, with 8 people listening to it. I’m trying to decide if John Rich’s rendition in the tribute concert made them nostalgic for the original version, or if they listened to it to clear the Rich version out of their heads. Troubador also made the Top 10 with 6 listeners. Ashton Shepherd’s small but mighty fan base gave her three tracks in the Top 10. Also featured in the Top 10 are future Grand Ole Opry members Montgomery Gentry with TocarMy Town and non-Opry member Lee Ann Womack (wrap your head around that) with TocarLast Call. Keith Urban, last seen on TV doing a pretty good job singing Marty Robbins‘ songs, had his decidedly non-Robbins song TocarKiss A Girl in the Top 10 as well. To continue our Strait theme, we had three people each listen to “Walk Of Life” by Shooter Jennings and Dire Straits. I have nothing against Shooter, and I’m all for artists singing whatever they want to sing, but I don’t know why anyone would pick his completely average cover version when the original song is pretty much perfect.

For free music this week, check out a couple of songs from John Paul Keith & the One Four Fives. According to his Last.fm bio, he’s spent his career being this close to having some major breakthroughs (being a member of the V-Roys, touring with Ryan Adams) and came even closer to retiring from music altogether. That would have been a shame, as the two songs available for download on Last.fm, “Lookin’ For a Thrill” and “TocarOtherwise,” are pretty good. They sort of remind me of Marty Stuart’s music – catchy, nice lead guitar, and less than 2:30 long. Check them out, and thanks for reading.

  • Chart Update 12/8/08

    Dez 8 2008, 21h28 por jrjourney

Some major shake-ups at the top of the artist chart this week. A handful of stellar singles on the tracks chart, and one new member this week. A great big 9513 howdy and welcome to TheHagMan. So, let's get started, shall we?

King George - George Strait rises to the top of artist chart this week fending off the mighty Sugarland who drop to #2. The Dixie Chicks, Brad Paisley, and Trace Adkins make up the rest of the top 5. Other artists finding their place in the playlists of 9513 group members include LeAnn Rimes, Reba McEntire, John Anderson, Ricky Skaggs, and old-time rock and roller Bob Seger.

The mighty Sugarland hold 2 of the top 5 albums this week. Their 2005 debut Twice The Speed Of Life is the #1 album with 9 listeners. The Dixie Chicks' Fly is #2 with the same number of listeners. Sugarland's Enjoy The Ride is #3 followed by albums from Josh Turner and Carrie Underwood. Mostly albums from this millenium dot the rest of the album landscape, with few exceptions to 90s albums.

The tracks chart is what I find most interesting this week. Jamey Johnson's TocarIn Color is #2 followed by chart stalwart Lee Ann Womack's latest. Toby Keith's TocarGod Love Her, Dixie Chicks' TocarNot Ready To Make Nice, and Sugarland's TocarTake Me As I Am complete the top 5. Other notable songs with multiple listeners include Alabama's TocarSong Of The South, Little Big Town's A Little More You, Loretta Lynn's weeper TocarMiss Being Mrs. and many, many more great tracks. But for the entire chart listing, you'll have to go here.

  • Most overrated bands part 2

    Jan 29 2008, 22h39 por FlyingAce

Well, this is part two in my never ending quest to manifest the true nature of bands many people enjoy but I think actually suck. Let's begin (In no particular order):

    U2
U2 is (I will start referring to the band as an individual because my dislike for said band can not be expressed in actual personal terms) pretentious and worst of all not even that good. I mean Bono can't sing that well, the music is redundant, the guitar is simple but overproduced to the point where that simplicity loses any value. The thing that saddens me is Bono is a representation of the civilized Western world for all those starving children he helps in Africa. I mean it's bad enough that they are starving, they don't need a douchebag like Bono to fuck up their lives even more. Worst of all is that U2 think it is innovative, while their music is horribly trite and not at all original; it has all been done before.

    Smashing Pumpkins
While we're on the subject of bands who might as well think they are the sun and the earth does in fact revolve around them, I present to you The Smashing Pumpkins. Billy Corgan has probably one of the most annoying voices ever, worst of all is that he seems to think the world requires more crappy records by him in order to survive. When the Smashing Pumpkins and Zwan broke up, he had to release a solo album to seemingly keep the world occupied so that they wouldn't kill themselves from lack of Billy Corgan in their life. I'm amazed that some people actually say Billy Corgan's album resembles shoegazing (one of my favorite genres), more like shitgazing if you ask me. Billy Corgan would probably think that would be artistic, though.

    Red Hot Chili Peppers
What a terrible band. They think they're original because they blended two genres supposedly (alternative and funk). It sounds more like they blended mediocre commercial shit with more mediocre commercial shit to me. Plus blending genres does not make the music good. I could blend ragtime and death metal and it would still be awful. I was slightly amused when I heard they made a cover of a Robert Johnson song. When I listened to the cover, I thought I would simultaneously cry and puke at the same time. Their original songs are even worse. The lyrics to the songs are so meaningless and stupid that it makes cringe. Songs like Hump-De-Bump (or whatever the hell it's called) have no reedeming qualities. And don't get me wrong, there old stuff sucks just as much. All around Red Hot Chili Peppers is just a terrible band. Flea is not even that good of a bass player anyway. The only people who think he is good know nothing about bass guitar.

That's all for now. There are so many more, but I don't have the time to address them right now.

Here's the bands from the last entry:
    Pink Floyd
    Led Zeppelin
    The Doors
    Bob Marley
Radiohead (I'm starting to enjoy Radiohead more I got their new album and think it's not bad. I still don't think they're worth quite as much praise as they get, though.)
    Coldplay
    Alabama
