Infusing death metal with some electronic touches, Akercocke was formed in early 1997 by guitarist Jason Mendonca and drummer David Gray, friends since their teens and bandmates in the band Salem Orchid. When that act split in 1992, the pair went their separate ways, reuniting in late 1996 and soon added longtime acquaintances Paul Scanlan and Peter Theobalds to the fold on guitar and bass, respectively. Influenced by Voivod and Killing Joke, the band gained a live following, creating a distinctive visual image for the band by dressing in suits. Rape of the Bastard Nazarene was issued by the group through their own label, Goat of Mendes, in early 1999 to solid reviews. Attracting the attention of underground label Peaceville, they were signed and Akercocke’s debut release for the label, The Goat of Mendes, was issued in mid-2001. 2003 saw the release of Choronzon, on Earache Records. Guitarist Paul Scanlan then parted company with Akercocke. According to the recently written biography of the band by Gray, Scanlan was officially fired from the band for not being dedicated, and contributing the wrong atmosphere to the band in general. His replacement is Matt Wilcock, formerly of Australian metal band The Berzerker. “Words That Go Unspoken, Deeds That Go Undone” was released in Britain and Europe in October 2005, and in the United States in February 2006, on Earache Records to great critical acclaim.

As far as I know, their only appearance in the US is with mastering the "WTGU, DTGU" album (gotta love abbreviations.) Maybe for Antichrist, too. Not sure.

I could definitely see some of the older 80s grind elements(Repulsion, Terrorizer etc) at play on Rape for sure. The notion that it's a pure Black Metal album though is laughable. I'm not usually a genre whore, but you have to at least get the base genre correct, haha.

Also, for people looking for an album update: Jason said that they have 8 songs in various stages of completion but they've been doing some upgrading to the sound equipment at Goat of Mendes studio so they haven't gotten a chance to record solid demos let alone track the full album. Probably late 2010 is my guess.

It's pretty hard to deny that there is a significant Black Metal influence in Akercocke's music. Their most "strict" Black Metal album is definitely The Goat of Mendes though. From Choronzon and onwards they've taken a mostly Death Metal approach while incorporating Black Metal and progressive elements. Mendes is definitely where the mix of both genres is displayed in great relief with songs like Horns of Baphoment, Of Menstrual Blood and Semen, A Skin for Dancing In and Ceremony of Nine Angels. Rape of the Bastard Nazarene is mostly a pure Death Metal album though.

I dont think Akercocke have done 1 black metal album in all honesty, Cassandra-Leo. rape of the basted Nazarene isn't black metal, at all. neither is Goat Of Mendez, in fact GoM is probably their most Death Metal based album. Akercocke's older work i would say is Blackened Death. BrotherManDude, try listen to Goat Of Mendez, its a really good album

Imagine if they started black metal (with Rape of the Bastard Nazarene) and slowly moved on to death metal (up to WTGU, DTGU). Antichrist was a step back to go "back to basics" (more or less).. The new album is supposedly having a mix of all styles from all albums, going from those slow, melodic moments to the high-pitched shrieks, crazy blastbeats and skin-shredding guitar-solos.

Huh. I've only listened to 'Words...' and Choronzon in detail, they're more akin to their signature style anyway, right? For some reason I have a hard time picturing them playing ('pure') black metal.
