Examples: Mellow Gold by Beck, Oh Perilous World by Rasputina, Touched by Nadja and Destroy All Astromen!! by Man or Astro-man?.
Mellow Gold was the first Beck album I heard, and I was reluctant to hear any other albums because I knew they couldn't live up to my expectations. Well, they didn't. But Beck, in general, is pretty cool. And Mellow Gold is excellent.
I still stand by my opinion that Oh Perilous World is an amazing album and deserves more love. I know my opinion doesn't "count" as much, since I'm not a big fan of Rasputina, but that album is awesome (as is the song Girls' School). Like Beck, I didn't check out any other Rasputina albums for quite a while because I knew I wouldn't like them as much.
I already have a whole journal entry written about Touched because I loved it so much. The whole drone genre is pretty weird, but Aidan Baker seems to have pretty much perfected it.
I'm listening to Destination Venus from Destroy All Astromen!! right now. I discovered MoAM just a couple of days before I got into MST3K, so it was a little while before I discovered the connection.
I have now set out to learn most of the songs from that album on guitar. I've been playing guitar for three years but I never really made a conscious effort to improve my playing, so I'm not where near as good as I could be.
So, there is a selection of four completely unrelated albums from completely different genres for you to listen to. It's like a tasty buffet of alternative, cello rock, drone and surf rock.
