  • Weird New Music To Put On Repeat

    Nov 6 2009, 23h06 por dischord33

Whenever I listen to something totally new and weird, it always goes over my head the first few listens. Then I give it a proper listen and I find I can't STOP listening to it.

Examples: Mellow Gold by Beck, Oh Perilous World by Rasputina, Touched by Nadja and Destroy All Astromen!! by Man or Astro-man?.

Mellow Gold was the first Beck album I heard, and I was reluctant to hear any other albums because I knew they couldn't live up to my expectations. Well, they didn't. But Beck, in general, is pretty cool. And Mellow Gold is excellent.

I still stand by my opinion that Oh Perilous World is an amazing album and deserves more love. I know my opinion doesn't "count" as much, since I'm not a big fan of Rasputina, but that album is awesome (as is the song Girls' School). Like Beck, I didn't check out any other Rasputina albums for quite a while because I knew I wouldn't like them as much.

I already have a whole journal entry written about Touched because I loved it so much. The whole drone genre is pretty weird, but Aidan Baker seems to have pretty much perfected it.

I'm listening to Destination Venus from Destroy All Astromen!! right now. I discovered MoAM just a couple of days before I got into MST3K, so it was a little while before I discovered the connection.

I have now set out to learn most of the songs from that album on guitar. I've been playing guitar for three years but I never really made a conscious effort to improve my playing, so I'm not where near as good as I could be.

So, there is a selection of four completely unrelated albums from completely different genres for you to listen to. It's like a tasty buffet of alternative, cello rock, drone and surf rock.

Haven't done this for a while but I should be able to keep up on this for a while now.

    1. Aidan Baker - 2009 - Live In Montreal - not sure when this was recorded but it's fairly recent - within the last year or so. Aidan Baker is a Canadian multi-instumentalist who leans toward the heavy drone side of psych. This is a 30 minute plus set featuring two long pieces recorded in a live setting. Although this sort of stuff is hard to appreciate in a less than perfect live recording, it still features some interesting moments including some live echoey multi-tracked singing and lots of thick guitar and electronics. Anyone new to Baker's music should start with his studio recordings to fully appreciate all the nuances involved. Aidan Bakeraidanbaker.org

    2. Stan Getz & Charlie Byrd - 1962 - Jazz Samba - For my money, Stan Getz made some of the best cocktail lounge jazz ever created. On this 1962 album (ancient history, I know) he's teamed up with guitar player Charlie Byrd for a sublime set of Brazilian influenced jazz. Nothing surprising or jarring, just two pros creating a mood - smooth, yet never saccharine. This is the kind of music that was ubiquitous in it's day but now has to be sought out to be heard. Which of course helps you appreciate it that much more.Stan GetzCharlie ByrdStan Getz & Charlie Byrd - Jazz Samba

    3. Alex Cline - 2009 - Continuation - this is the latest from drummer Alex Cline, who is the brother of guitar player Nels Cline. This release features lots of percussion, cello, and bass. Although released on the Cryptogramophone label, it's highly reminiscent of the ECM sound, especially some of Jack DeJohnette's work with the label. I would say Cline's latest is less airy and more improvised than the typical ECM disc, it's a good a touchstone as any. This is complex music demanding repeated listenings. I've heard it 3 times now and each time have found something new. He hasn't been prolific like his brother, so here's hoping he start putting out his own music more regularly.Alex ClineReview of Alex Cline's Continuation

    4. VA - 2007 - Projekt - A Dark Noel - Xmas is just around the corner so why not start now. As the title says, lots of dark and ethereal sounds emanating from this compilation. My personal favorite is Faith & The Muse's 'A Winter Wassail' and possibly Arcanta's odd take on 'Carol Of The Bells'. The important thing as this is serious seasonal music throughout, not a novelty clunker in to be found. And serious Christmas music is the only kind I want to hear. May have to give this one another spin. I'm also sorry about including a link to Amazon, but it's the best one I could find for more information about this CD.Projekt Music - A Dark Noel

    5. Anthony Braxton - 2008 - Live at the Kursaal Chamber Hall, 43 Heineken Jazzaldia, Donostia, San Sebastian, Spain, 07-25-08 - this is something I grabbed off of the Big-O website which I think is based in Singapore. This is one hell of a set, with the 8 part work 'Accelerator Ghost Dance' being featured. A standout for me is guitar player Mary Halvorson who is someone I've recently caught on to. Her playing keeps bobbing and weaving around Braxton, Taylor Bynum's horns, and Aaron Siegel's vibes and percussion. And everytime I hear Braxton it's something different, kind of like John Zorn. And Big-O is always worth a visit as they feature a constantly rotating list of boots to download.Anthony BraxtonBig-O homepage

  • Part 12

    Ago 11 2009, 21h33 por Vidreven

Aidan Baker & Time Hecker is a collaboration between Aidan Baker (of Nadja) and noise artist Tim Hecker. Their music can be described as ambient noise. They create a feeling of distant places and landscapes. Atmosphere on the album is somewhat dark and cold so sometimes you have a feeling of landscapes in the night covered with snow. Fantasma-parastasie is a very nice album for ambient lovers.

Made Out of Babies is an American rock/metal band. They started out as a hardcore band but their third and last (and best imo) album doesn't have a lot of hardcore influence. The music is decent but what I like most about this band is their vocalist, Julie Christmas, who is one of my favorite female singers. She can scream, yell and howl like a mad(wo)man and her clean voice is very creepy, like listening to a lunatic talking (and weird lyrics add to the atmosphere). Therir last album, The Ruiner, is an excellent album for those interested in unusual vocals.

Nikt o nim nie wie. Odkryłem go przypadkiem. Trudno się tam dostać, ale gdy już staniesz na tej ziemi… Jest ukryty, jest tajemniczy, jest… inny. Inny niż wszystko co istnieje. Jedyny, który pozostał niezaludniony - Kraj Wyobrażony.

  • Jasper TX, Anduin, Jeremy Bible & Jason Henry - July 8 Cleveland

    Jun 8 2009, 18h49 por jbjh

    Jasper TX
    || Gothenburg, Sweden || http://myspace.com/jaspertx || Miasmah, Kning Disk, Fangbomb, Fenetre, SMTG Limited
Besides being one half of the rather amazing post-rock duo De La Mancha, Jasper TX's Dag Rosenqvist has released a number of carefully drafted and very well received solo recordings with labels such as Miasmah, Kning Disk, Fangbomb, and Lampse. His work is primarily guitar driven soundscapes covered in layers of drums, voices, organs, toy pianos, field recordings, and effects. Comparisons have been made to artists such as Fennesz, Aidan Baker, and Machinefabriek, with whom Rosenqvist has done two collaborations. In 2009, he followed 2008's "Black Sheep" album on Miasmah with a new record titled "Singing Stones" on Fangbomb and the collaboration with Anduin on SMTG Limited. This will be Jasper TX's first ever US dates.

    Anduin
    || Richmond, Virginia || http://smtgltd.com/anduinore || SMTG Limited
Anduin's Jonathan Lee creates dark, pulsating ambient electronics soaked in layers of synths, samples, and field recordings. He has collaborated with a number of international artists including Svarte Greiner, Jasper TX, Stephen Vitiello, Noah Saval, Xela, Gareth Davis, and his own experimental band Souvenir's Young America. His live shows and gallery instillations include a variety of self-made sets, collected props, and hidden lights. In 2009, he has 3 new releases: a live collaboration EP with Svarte Greiner, "The Bending Of A Light" LP with Jasper TX, and a new full length titled "Abandoned In Sleep," all of which are on SMTG Limited.

    jeremy bible & jason henry
    || Ohio || http://jbjh.experimedia.net || INFRACTION, Gruenrekorder, experimedia, Abgurd, Gears of Sand, Resting Bell, Smallfish, audiobulb
Sound artists Jeremy Bible & Jason Henry collaborate to fuse elements of musique concrete, acoustic, and electronic music. By means of conceptual, experimental, and algorithmic recording and processing techniques the duo seek to expose a synergetic relationship between real world found sounds, acoustic instrumentation, and electronic sound design. The duo's creative amalgamation of these elements have created a moody and growing body of sound works.
