    a-ha
So of course everyone loves "Take On Me"...how could you not? but I never really heard anything else from a-Ha until a few years ago, when Julie (my sister) played the rest of Hunting High and Low for me when we were driving who remembers where. "Love Is Reason" stood out right away, but the whole album is pretty fantastic. Later, I acquired another song from Jen (also my sister), "The Living Daylights," from a James Bond Soundtrack...this one ended up being my wake-up song in Spain when I first got itunes alarm and didn't know how to change the settings yet. It's a good song, but I still find the first few seconds a little jarring, since they shocked me out of dreams so many times.

    AFI
Sing the Sorrow deeefinitely reminds me of early 2003, when I had just come back to Stuart from a few months living in New York. Mimi and Tracey had an apartment together in Glenwood, and every waking moment was spent there. I remember Tracey and the Last Laugh guys and also Kretzer being really excited about the release of this album. I had heard a few A.F.I. songs before...singles from earlier albums...but not much. There was something really appealing about these new songs, though. Probably just poppy enough for me. And so it became a backdrop to many of those nights. Saw them at Warped Tour at some point, which was fun and ridiculous.

    ABBA
When I was around 14/15, my sisters took me to a couple concerts...I particularly remember going to House of Blues, once for Cyndi Lauper, and once for Duran Duran. Julie was too cool for Abba, but Jen and I would get ready listening to the Gold (greatest hits) album. I had a very silly pair of fake leather pants at that time and wore them with brightly colored tube-tops and glittery make-up. Now, I also associate Abba with my Dad, since for some reason he really loves Mamma Mia. My favorite songs are "Knowing Me, Knowing You," "Super Trouper" and "Lay All Your Love on Me."

    ABC
Where did THIS come from? "Poison Arrow" is a pretty sweet jam, but I have no recollection of it from the 80's, nor do I know how or when it got into my library. But even though I can't trace where it came from, I'm not deleting it. It's sweet new wave-y fun. Who broke my heart? You did. You did.

    abx
I was following a music blog for a while that I found through Shawn McGee's last.fm friends somehow. The flow of posts slowed down to a trickle a few months ago and then I just stopped checking altogether, but during the time I was going, I downloaded some interesting things I probably would never have found otherwise. "Light Falsetto Music" is one of them mash-up thangs (I obviously live in a cave most of the time). Not something I'm likely to investigate further, but It's appealing enough to keep around for now, methinks.

    Ace of Base
Oh yeahhhh. Elementary school. All that she wants is another baby... I think at first I thought this was referring to an actual baby... So yeah, these Swedes were fun to record from the radio and sing during recess. I've got three tracks which I still definitely enjoy from time to time..."All That She Wants," "Don't Turn Around," and of course, "The Sign."

    Acoustic Syndicate
"Rainbow was a Rollercoaster" was put on a mix for me by Andy when we first made the switch from friends to dating. He was at University of Tennessee and had thus acquired a taste for bluegrassy and hippie-ish jam band-y sorts of music. I don't know any other songs by this band, but I loooove the banjo, and the singer's voice is pretty nice, too. It reminds me of Andy and of the funny concept of us ever being anything more than friends, that seemed like a good idea at the time.

    The Ad Libs
ooh. "Boy From New York City" is on a 60's Dance Party cd that belongs to my parents. I got hold of it in high school and never gave it back. Sorry, guys.

    Adam Faith
Oh look, something else I took from my parents. This one I just borrowed, copied to my computer and gave back, though. The album is "The British Invasion" and this track is "It's Alright." Good handclap situation in the chorus.

    Adam Rhinehart
Ashley Belanger made me a great mix maybe in 2005 or 2006 with a bunch of songs from different Lou Barlow projects and a few other little jems. "Anxiety of Nearness" is definitely the sappiest song on that entire mix, but it's sweet. :)

    Adama Yalomba
According to last.fm, this artist is from Mali. The song "Politique" is from the album Festival in the Desert, which I'm pretty sure I copied from Jen. I should put this song on my dance around the house playlist.

    Adele
"Hometown Glory" is another song I got from that music blog I was following for a time. Honestly didn't listen to it until right this minute. She's got a rich tone...sounds vocally similar to Amy Winehouse but with a sweet sadness. Maybe I should seek out more from her...I love female vocalists but can be fairly judgmental and picky about them. The track just ended. Maybe I'll try Adele radio on here sometime soon. Maybe.

    The Admirations
"The Bells of Rosa Rita" is one of many, many doo-wop songs I acquired from Victor. I love this genre SO much.

    Adriana Caselotti
And now we come to the first of much Disney music. Adriana Caselotti was the voice of Snow White, so here we have "Whistle While You Work" and "Someday My Prince Will Come." My strongest memory relating to this is being at the parks in 5th grade with my family and BFFs at the time Leighan and Aschlei, imitating the ridiculously high squeaky voice of Snow White when she sings into the wishing well and has her voice echo back...

    Aerosmith
I don't know why of all Aerosmith songs, I only have "Walk This Way." This song doesn't do much for me, really. Oh, now I see. It's from a collection called "Ultimate Rock Collection: Gold and Platinum" that I borrowed from my parents when I was in high school. I made a lot of mix tapes with that collection as a base. I miss mix tapes. Anyway, as far as Aerosmith goes, I can't help but love "Dream On," especially when it's played at a piano bar. I also can get into some of the ridic 90's singles. But I don't have them in my library. I'll get over it.

    Afel Bocoum
This is another one from Festival in the Desert... I like the unison singing...but I don't have much else to say about this.

    Against Me!
I sort of saw them at a show in Orlando in 2003, but it got broken up when they were barely into the set. What I saw was fun though, so I eventually bought an album. What I bought was the Acoustic EP, which I listened to a lot and liked a great deal, but I guess not enough to get more. Last year in Spain, my roommate Steve was a big fan, so he'd play some of the songs on guitar for us to sing. He gave me a few more albums, but it's still not really a go-to for me. That being said, I did just listen to all of it again while cleaning, and it was enjoyable...and they do get bonus points for being from Florida.

    Aicha Bint Chighaly
Wow! Another song from Festival in the Desert whose artist starts with A!

    Aimee Mann
Oh, Man(n). I love her. Her voice isn't "pretty" per se, but it appeals so much to my ears, especially when paired with her lovely melodies. Like so many artists, she was first introduced to me by my sister Julie, who pointed out that she was the singer from 80s band 'Til Tuesday ("Voices Carry"). I played the album Lost in Space over and over and over. It was really exciting to finally see her play in Orlando with Tracey, Lauren Othón, and Chris Ziemba in...let's say 2006. My very favorite songs are "I Can't Get My Head Around It," "That's Just What You Are," and "Invisible Ink." <3

Wow, this is going to take forever. Excellent.

  • What’d You Say? (foreign language sampler)

    Nov 10 2007, 4h38 por heatherc

I came across a last.fm mixtape group today that had for its November theme non-English music. I don't have the time to join the group, but I had made such a mix a couple years ago that I like a lot. There's very little instrumental music that I like. On the other hand, it's not necessarily important to me to understand lyrics (heck, there's a bunch of songs sung in English where I can't understand what's being sung). So I'm a big fan of music from around the world. I thought I'd upload the mix here in case anyone who sees this page has any interest.

  • My Road to Desert Blues Music

    Jul 29 2007, 16h32 por blu3moon

It all started a few years ago. I had just read a book about the Tamashek. I know, most people know them as Tuareg but they call themselves Tamashek or Kel Tamasheq ('people of the Tamashek language') and that's the term I use. It's a matter of respect. (Don't worry, I won't start a 'Get your damn tags right' campaign ;) For no special reason I was curious how Tamashek sounds in comparison to Arabic for example. So I started googling ... without much success. But then I had the brilliant idea of searching for music instead of recordings of spoken words. Much better! The search results directed me to the BBC recording of Tinariwen's performance at the WOMAD 2004 festival.

My first impression after listening to the one-hour performance: "Nice guitar playing but apart from that ... ,uhm, quite exotic." However, over the next days I realized that the music didn't cease to linger in the back of my mind. So I returned two or three times to listen again with growing enjoyment. Finally I decided to get a copy of the Amassakoul and The Radio Tisdas Sessions albums. "Surely", I thought "there must be more music like Tinariwen's out there." So I also got a copy of the Festival in the Desert compilation in order to get an overview of the genre.
The song that aroused my interest more than the others of this compilation was the enigmatic Tihar Bayatin by Tartit, the only other well-known Tamashek group at that time. Although I generally prefer string music the energetic sound with no more ingredients but two tindé drums, handclaps and sort of a-cappella singing sparked my curiosity enough get the Ichichila album a month later. While guitars play the major role in the instrumental part of Tinariwen's music tindé drums and clapping dominate the sound of Tartit although they have a guitar, ngoni lutes (which the Tamashek call tehardent), and a one-string imzad violin that add variety to their sound. This is due to the fact that Tartit is mainly a female group while the majority of Tinariwen's members are male. Musical instruments are traditionally associated with genders in Tamashek culture. The tindé drum as well as the imzad violin are restricted to the women while the tazamart flute is restricted to men. Among the men who fought in the rebellion in the 90s the electric guitar has become the most popular instrument.
If you -like me- ever had the feeling that some of Tartit's song are a bit long and monotonous it's because you are missing something... . Tartit's performances often involve various kinds of dancing (sword dancing, seated dancing, etc). Many of the youyous (the trilling sound made by the women) and other shouts are actually responses to the dancers. You can see some of their dances on YouTube, Divano Production, Mondomix, or on the DVD Jusqu'à Tombouctou (available at Mondomix).

2006 and the first half of 2007 have brought us quite a lot of new Tamashek blues: Tinariwen and Tartit released their third album respectively Aman Iman: Water Is Life and Abacabok). Etran Finatawa, a mixed group of Tamashek and Woodabe (another nomadic ethnic group of the Sahel), have released their debut album Introducing Etran Finatawa. Paris-based Toumast have released Ishumar, Terakaft (the band of Khedou, a founding member of Tinariwen) released Bismilla - the Bko sessions, and the album Desert Rebel which features Takrist Nakal from Niger has been released, too.

So far I have talked about Tamashek blues but there is more to desert blues. In fact other ethnic groups of the west african Sahara and Sahel have developed their own styles.

Via In The Heart Of The Moon I found my way to Ali Farka Touré who is surely the best known representative of the desert blues as a whole and the Songhai tradition in special. Sadly he passed away last year but his nephew Afel Bocoum has also made himself a name and Ali's son Vieux Farka Touré will surely do so in the future. Afel also participates with his band Alkibar in a collective called Desert Blues that also features Tartit and Habib Koité and his band Bamada (see also Habib Koité & Bamada) who represent the Bambara tradition from the south of Mali in this project. Desert Blues hasn't made an album yet but the afore-mentioned DVD Jusqu'à Tombouctou contains a documentation about the project, the three artists as well as a music video of each one.

The Bambara branch of desert blues is something that I have only recently begun to explore. Habib Koité's music was my entry point and so far I have looked (or listened to be more precisely;) closer to Boubacar Traoré aka 'Bambara Blues Man' and the ngoni virtuoso Bassekou Kouyaté who has also played with Ali Farka Touré.

Still, there's much more desert blues to be explored. Where will the path lead to from here? Further south? Back into the Sahara? No idea, or as Lao Tzu said: "A good traveller has no fixed plans and is not intent on arriving."

  • my eclectic score

    Mai 9 2007, 10h47 por claudinec

Take your top 20 artists. For each of these artists, collect the top 5 similar artists. The resulting number of unique artists is your eclectic score. If the score is small (extreme = 5) your musical preferences are very limited, and if it is large (larger than 80, extreme = 100), then you have an eclectic musical preference. You can compute your own score at http://anthony.liekens.net/pub/scripts/last.fm/eclectic.php

    My eclectic score is currently

  • My musical year in review

    Jan 1 2007, 7h38 por chancer

It's been quite a year for West African music. Much-loved Ali Farka Touré passed away, not without leaving us one last album. He's survived by his nephew Afel Bocoum, who has started getting lots of attention for his music. Tartit, with their Tuareg electric guitars, brought out a new album as well. Toumani Diabaté and Ba Cissoko each put out some great eclectic yet still tradition-steeped music.

Rosanne Cash dealt with her father's passing (and the death of other family members) in Black Cadillac. Neil Young expressed his thoughts on Living With War. We went Crazy over Gnarls Barkley, The Dixie Chicks continued as outspoken as ever on Taking the Long Way, and Bob Dylan reflected on Modern Times.

Folk music is alive and well and mutating into new forms every day. In fact, I don't know if it's technology and the global village thing, but it seems to me that increasing numbers of musicians perform stuff that blends an amazing variety of influences from many genres, past decades and corners of the globe (what a funny expression). Pete Seeger would say it's all folk music.

At any rate, it's the music that helps remind us who we are and what we can be. I don't think I could have gotten through the year without it.

    Finds of 2006

My top albums of 2006: This music evoked from me a stunned "Wowww!" a quiet "mmmm" or a jubilant "YES!" This is stuff I can't stop listening to:

Idan Raichel - The Idan Raichel Project
Haunting, yearning, hopeful. This young Israeli includes samples of Ethiopian singers in his work. No Hebrew, Amharic or Ethiopian language skills required for appreciation.
The Shins - Wincing The Night Away
Their best yet by far. Leaked early to the Internet, it's not officially out yet.
    Aterciopelados - Oye
This Colombian group rocks! Penetrating feminist/humanist lyrics.
Bonnie 'Prince' Billy - The Letting Go
Exquisitely, delicately moving. One of my favorites from the Bonnie Prince.
    Mari Boine - Idjagiedas
Sami chants to put you into a blissful trance.
    Sara Tavares - Balance
Delicious gentle rhythms. I find myself dancing.
The Little Willies - The Little Willies
So gosh darn enjoyable. I challenge anyone to dislike this album. In fact, I challenge anyone not to sing along.
    Juana Molina - Son
Her "folktronics" and quiet Spanish lyrics continue to hypnotize me.

    Late discoveries

I happened to find out about these folks for the first time in 2006 and they are too wonderful not to acknowledge:

    Exene Cervenka - Running Sacred
Where have I been all her life? Some of the most enjoyable lyrics ever - "Everyone has a boss. My boss is my heart. So you see, I cannot quit my job." and "Wouldn't it be fun to stop the world and watch all the people fall off?"
Robin Holcomb - any album, though I'm listening to Rockabye the most.
Folk? Jazz? Classical? All the above. Americana for sure. Thought-provoking and moving.
Karen Savoca - In The Dirt
Can I say it? Down to earth. What a voice, and what soul.

    Honorable mentions

Here are my other favorite albums released in 2006, in alphabetical order:

    Afel Boucoum - Niger
    Akli D - Ma Yela
    Ali Farka Touré - Savane
Ba Cissoko - Electric Griot Land
The Be Good Tanyas - Hello Love
Belle and Sebastian - The Life Pursuit
    Bob Dylan - Modern Times

  • Afel Boucom - Alkibar

    Mai 31 2006, 18h31 por richttaylor

Every day I'm falling more and more in love with the music of Mali.

This weekend, via Rhapsody's world pics radio station, I Afel Bocoum. He's very similar to Ali Farka Toure, a guitar player and singer with an awesome heritage.

I've been listening to the album Alkibar quite a bit lately. It's a very good album that I can't recommend enough. Very mellow and easy to work too I can't recommend this enough. It's pure musical mastery at its finest!
