    Today

October Tide - Rain Without End (2009) US reissue
    - When I saw this, I was just flipping through the miscellaneous metal CD's at Soundgarden (in Syracuse, NY) and briefly saw it. I flipped. I didn't realize the rerelease had already come out. VERY happy. Now I own both.

    Negură Bunget - Om (2006)
    -with DVD

    Recently

Daylight Dies - Lost to the Living (2008)

    - bought them all used at FYE; total: $16

Between the Buried and Me - Colors (live CD/DVD) (2008)

  • My Albums List updated 11/11/08

    Nov 12 2008, 0h07 por tomcatha

It has been a while since i updated my albums list so i decided it was time again. This is going to be a fairly long list though :P

    Artillery - Terror Squad

One of the classic 80's Thrash albums. Artillery were and still are one of the top all time thrash metal bands, with their energy, technicallity and not entirely sane sounding vocals. This 2nd album of theirs has improved production compared to their first but without losing any energy and aggression. A definite recommendation to all thrash fans!

Carcass - Necroticism - Descanting the Insalubrious
Despite this rather horrid album cover this is another classic. In my opinion this is carcass best work and even the best straight up grind/death album of all time. This album has quite allot of catchy songs and awesome riffing. A recommendation for all fans of Death and Grind, even for all fans of extreme metal.

    Hellhammer - Demon Entrails
I saw this in my local music store and just had to buy it. This is a good complimation of 3 classic demos by Hellhamer, you can basically hear them change from a rawer venom to something very unique and ahead of their time. To some it might sound aged but i disagree entirely, this stuff wont age ever with its raw energy. This is for all fans of black metal

    Hirax - Not Dead Yet
The last release of hirax in the 80's shows them why they became underground legends. Fast, furious crossover thrash combined with..... Christian lyrics! Yes good christian bands do exist! Hirax was one of the first bands to use blast beats, maybe even the first. Seeing Destroy was recorded and released in 1985, which was 2 years before scum by napalm death was released. As a extra this album has footage from a gig by hirax in 1987. Not the best quality but very interesting to watch. This release breathes THRAAAAAAAASSSSHHHH awesomity and is a must have.

    Lykathea Aflame - Elvenefris

This is in my opinion one of the most interesting and best metal releases ever. This is Progressive Technical Athmospheric Melodic Death/Grind. Quite a mouthfull no? Well this is album is brutal yet uplifting. This album breathes a positive athmosphere despite you being crushed by blasting and heavy riffing. Its like you are being crushed by a giant group hug or a big carebear. Is that the only reason its good? No, for these do nothing wrong. The song structures are good, the riffing is very nice. The only flaw for some people maybe is the snare tone. I like it but allot of people dont. None the less a real must have.

    img]http://img1.liveinternet.ru/images/attach/b/2/24/982/24982383_Manowar_Kings_of_Metal.jpg

    Manowar - Kings of Metal

Manowar requires no introduction. This is simply a classic heavy metal album. Nice riffing, good solos quality vocals. Nothing special and out of the ordinary but still a very solid effort. If you like metal there is no reason not to get this!

    Manilla Road - Voyager

Manilla Road might be the ultimate definition of a good metal band. Underground, no comprimize of its sound for the sake of selling more albums and always releasing quality albums. Voyager is no different from the past efforts. Quality, and fresh. This time adding what sounds like a bit of death metal. Some say its only because shelton had problems with his throat but i think its more than just some of the vocals. This album however has worse production than Crystal logic, which is quite a feat considering crystal logic is from 1983. However its still very listenable.

    Moonsorrow - Tulimyrsky

Moonsorrow struck again.... A year after what i consider the best viking metal release yet. Moonsorrow released again something special, however this isnt the best they have done either, the new title track is good not great. The covers and the new versions of all songs are better yet also not incredible. The production on the kickdrum isnt great either. Sounds too triggered i think. None the less still a very solid effort. Just dont get this before their older albums.

Morbid Angel - Formulas Fatal to the Flesh

Morbid Angel is another band that needs no introduction. A classic floridan death metal act with the most influential death metal drummer of them all. Yet i think this album from 1998 is better than their early ones. Sure this isnt as infuential and groundbreaking but this album just has better songs from a 2008 perspective. Prayer of Hatred was the first song i tried playing on my guitar. I hope that says enough.

Negura Bunget - 'n crugu bradului

Negura Bunget is something different. I picked these 2 Negura Bunget albums up after their (awesome) gig in Hengelo. This is athmospheric/folk black metal at its finest. I cant really go in depth on their albums however due to them being kind of hard to describe and me being mostly with their(out of print) older material

    Negura Bunget - Om

The second album i picked up after the gig of Negura Bunget and their newest.

    Obituary - Slowly we rot

Ahh yes, Obituary, this is in my opinion the best old school death metal band. Their first 4 albums are just crushing, heavy and awesome. One of the heaviest bands of all time for sure. Obituary always focused more on heavyness than being fast and it works out very well. This debut of theirs is their fastest effort. Yet still really heavy.

    Obituary - Cause of Death

This is the 2nd release by Obituary. This album is another great one. The difference between this one and their debut is that this one is slower and has i think better lead guitar.

    Obituary - The End Complete

The third album of obituary is quite similar to Cause of Death, this one is however more riffy.

    Obituary - World Demise

This is the final album of the classic 4 obituary albums. This one is their more tribal and experimental album and has i think the best Lyrics. The vocals are also less harsh on this one. Being the closest to normal singing of all Obituary albums. In the end all these Obituary are must haves. Awesome Death metal. If you dont like the average death metal band because its too fast, this might also be for you.

    Otargos - Ten Eyed Nemesis

Otargos is a underground black metal band from France. They have a very unsual lyrical theme. Its basically satanism meets physics here. However on this album its closer to satanism than quantum physics than their 2nd album. This is my favorite straight up black metal record. This is well produced and has awesome catchy riffs and solos. Something every black metal fan should have.

    Mezarkabul - Anatolia

Mezarkabul is arguably the biggest metal band from Turkey. Formerly known as pentagram they changed their name to avoid confusing and getting sued. This is their first of their folk/power albums. No this is not folk/power like Falconer, if anything this is more like US Power metal meets folk. This album differs from their later ones mostly in terms of being less folky. A great album none the less.

    Mezarkabul - Unspoken

This is my personal favorite Mezarkabul album. This is their best combination of turkish music and power metal. No real flaws on this album.

    Mezarkabul - Bir

This album never got released outside of Turkey. So its rather hard to get. Unless you go to turkey. I dont like this album as much as their previous 2 due to the vocals. However this is still good.

    Overkill - Feel the Fire

Thraaaaaaaaaaaashhhhh!!!!. Thats basically what this album is by the oldest Thrash band in the world. This album throws quality thrash riffs at you with more energy than the average thrash album from 1985. This album certainly shows why Overkill should get more praise than metallica for being founders of Thrash metal.

    Septicflesh - Communion

Septic Flesh is a big name in the greek metal underground but not so much outside of greece. However this should and must change with this excellent album. This is the best metal album with a orchestra that i have ever heard. No orchestra for the sake of it no, it is combined with the death metalness to make it a excellent album. A real candidate for album of the year 2008.

  • Top 10 Norwegian Black Metal Albums

    Nov 11 2008, 20h15 por Enzlaved

I know what you, dear reader, might think while reading this - who in the dying world needs another thread about some name-dropping-groupie-fan-like-behaviour, but I guessed I should mention some of the darkest gems that are close to my heart. Included are milestones in their own right and loveable outcasts...and there are still many yet to be heard, but anyway, here it goes; (excuse my English, I´m still learning)
the list is in no particular order...
Enslaved -"Vikingligr Veldi" (LP/1994/Deathlike Silence/Voices of Wonder) I guess starting off with my most favorite would be the best way of creating this list. When I first witnessed the musical offerings of this mighty band (on the "Hordanes Land" EP), I was captured right on! Epic and lenghty songs, hypnotic riffs, beautiful, barbaric and the ability to draw cruel and frozen landscapes before your eye are just some of the words that sprawl out my mouth while thinking about this masterpiece. Essential stuff!
Aeternus -"Beyond the Wandering Moon" (LP/1997/Hammerheart) The debut album by a band that is often times underrated. Nowadays they incorporate more styles of death and dark metal, but this here is where it all began. No other record bears such a thick atmosphere!!! Folk-laden Pagan Black Metal at it´s best! The drumming is hyperfast (but nicely buried in the background), the riffs are a wall of white noise and it has just the right proportion of synthesizers to contribute to the overall atmosphere (yes, I´m using this word again since this is truly one of the most beautiful pieces to come out of the scene).
Burzum -"Filosofem" (LP/1996/Misanthropy) My favorite song by Varg must be "Det som en gang var" but as far as whole albums go, nothing comes close to this recording! Recorded in March 1993 with more work on sound effects and vocal arrangements than previous works, this truly stands as a milestone of mind provoking and touching musical achievement!
Gorgoroth -"Antichrist" (LP/1996/Malicious) Never again did they possess such atmosphere and brutality as in their beginnings! New compositions never seemed quite finished and since the only founding member of the band had to leave the sinking ship, the early age should be regarded as their milestone period. This album (if we dare speak so - it lasts only about 25 minutes), in particular, is a fine example of how ugly and filthy, but at the same time melodic and powerful, Norwegian extreme metal could be! Fantastic guitar work by Infernus and one of the most gruesome sounding vocalists of all black metal history (Pest, of Obtained Enslavement) mark this LP especially!
Mayhem -"De Mysteriis dom Sathanas" (LP/1994/Deathlike Silence/Voices of Wonder) Sadly "Dead" and "Euronymous" didn´t last to see their common work being released, but still, this masterpiece holds it all - an overall dark atmosphere driven by the monotonous and hypnotic riffing, ultra-fast drumming, sick delivery by the vocals (lyrically imagined mostly by the aforementioned Dead) and a production job that captures every instrument very clear and present. Flawless and rightfully cult!
Mysticum -"In the Streams of Inferno" (LP/1996/Full Moon) These sick bastards have probably released some of the most crushing music in the whole genre! They incorporated chainsaw guitar work (that serves only as the backbone of this destructive sound-wall) and mixed it all together with a hyper-fast drum programming, ultra-sick vocal style and the upholding of the occult and drug addiction (in order to foreshadow our demise) - it doesn´t get colder than this!
    Strid -"Strid" (LP/2007Kyrck)
This album compiles all the material recorded by this troubled band...they are commonly viewed as the originators of depressive black metal (creating soul-devastating hymns before the likes of Burzum and Forgotten Woods). The band had gone through many name-changes (Malfeitor, Battle) and the vocalist had commited suicide along the way. Still, nothing could harm the endless dark beauty of the song material! Great musicianship and an overall atmosphere drenched in melancholy and hate. A hidden treasure for sure, but never forgotten!!!

Its been a little while but i have 5 new albums again!

    Arcturus - Aspera Hiems Symfonia

This is a classic in the athmospheric/avant garde black metal field. It is dark, heavy and beautifull. Is it worth getting even if you are not into black metal? Totally.

Dies Irae - Sculpture of Stone

This a new album yet it is one of my favourite death metal albums. Why? because 1. the vocals are awesome. 2. The delicious riffs. This is Polish Tech Death at its Finest. Suitable for people not into Death metal? No not really but then why are you not into death metal?

    Manilla Road - Crystal Logic

Sometimes theres a reverse relation between things. Like how good the album cover art is compared to the music itself. Well this is one good example of that. Simply put awesome epic heavy/power metal. Is it like hammerfall. No... This is the original kind of power metal. So allot less gay and allot infact incredibly more awesome. Get it now.

    Stone - No Anaesthesia

Stone is one of my favourite bay area styled thrash bands. That they are from Finland does not really matter. Infact this is i guess Finnish bay area thrash as there is quite a difference. Are Stone up there with Metallia and such? Let me put it like this. I'd rather listen to this band then Metallica.

    Enslaved - Eld

Enslaved kind of sounds like a anti christian satan worshipping band. While they are anti christian they support the viking pagan ideology albeit the modern version ofcourse. Anyway what about the music? Well its Viking/black metal. One of the best albums of the entire viking movement either but this is more of a vikingified black metal album then blackened viking metal. Is it a classic worth getting? Yes.

A More In-Depth Guide to Black Metal Part 4

So we return for a fourth and final installment. I intended to finish this a week ago before heading off to vacation in Switzerland but life got in the way. Exhausted and yet refreshed I return to finish these guides. I know four parts isn't quite as catchy as ending at 666, but I don't think that 666 parts is feasible. Let the grim frozen winds drive us onward for one final time.

Leviathan (Swe): Not to be confused with the 30 other metal bands with this name, this Swedish one man project is an excellent Black Metal entity, despite only releasing one album so far. Unlike most BM, Far Beyond The Light has a good production and in this case, the good production values actually benefits the music as most over-produced BM sounds too mechanical or worse. There is a rich depth to this album, repeated listens reveal the various layers that can be found. Think of Filosofem but richer. The album begins rather conventionally but as it goes on becomes more and more abstract. An act that's well worth the significant time investment.

Mysticum: Mysticum were playing industrial BM before it became trendy. Despite their limited discography I find they have some of the best industrial BM around. The production on the Inferno album takes some getting used to but it adds to the unsettling atmosphere of that album. Rec albums: In the Strem of Inferno, Lost Masters of the Universe.

Judas Iscariot: Arguably the godfathers of USBM and one of the better projects to emerge from that scene , and all of BM for that matter. Existing mainly as a one-man project, the music is generally high in quality and dynamic, yet throughout its existence has maintained a very raw production. A project that perfectly captures the two main elements of BM, moments of cold fury and moments of sorrow. The sorrowful element isn't overdone like in a lot of depressive BM acts. Almost everything released by this project is of top quality you can do no wrong in checking out this act's discography. I'm very fond of the album artwork as well. Rec albums: Heaven in Flames, The Cold Earth Swept Below, Thy Dying Light, Distant in Solitary Night, To Embrace the Corpses Bleeding.

Manes: This is the Manes from Trondheim, not the Manes that eventually became Ved Buens Ende. A project that combines many non-metal elements, mainly industrial, and is able to combine these into very well composed arrangements. A band that sound like no other and are truly unique. Without a doubt one of the better avantgarde-ish bands out there. Of all the BM bands that use keyboards, Manes are probably the one who uses them the best. Rec albums: Under Ein Blodraud Maane, Maanes Natt, Ned I Stillheten.

Abyssic Hate: It seems like depressive or "suicidal" Black Metal has become quite the trend lately with seemingly hundreds of these bands or one-man projects coming out of the woodwork. When a style becomes over saturated like this, it becomes difficult to find the higher quality acts, it becomes finding the needle in the haystack. Like Shining, AH are one of the best acts of this particular style. The music relies largely on hypnotic repetition to achieve its effect. Thankfully, the project isn't afraid to write more aggressive material, most of which can be more easily found on the A Decade of Hate compilation. Rec albums: Life is a Pain in the Neck, Suicidal Emotions, A Decade of Hate.

Windir: Wow! I'm hard pressed to name a band thats produced such an amazingly high quality, and consistent, output of BM as this project. Windir's music is highly melodic, at times the melodies are downright brilliant. Some of the melodies will stick in your head for weeks on end. This is amazing, epic stuff, with a vague Viking feel at times. Overall, just absolutely stunning. I'm trying hard not to sound like a raving fanboy, but this is truly amazing stuff. No fan of Metal, let alone Black Metal, should feel complete without checking out this sadly defunct act. You can't go wrong with any albums released by this band. Terje Bakken passing away in 2004 is just as tragic to the Metal word as was Chuck Shuldiner, Quorthon or Randy Rhoads' passing. Rec albums: Antor, 1184, Likferd.

Behemoth: More known presently as a Technical Death Metal act, Behemoth began as a pretty promising BM act. I find the early stuff rather trebley, even by BM standards, on the production end. Behemoth's BM stuff is quite good, but I can't help but get the feeling that they never attained the promise that the early material showed. As I've stated in one of my replies, I don't like the new Behemoth sound. Still, the early material is worth investigating on its own. Rec albums: Sventevith (Storming Near the Baltic), And the Forests Dream Eternally.

Belenos: Probably my favorite French Black Metal act. A very epic band who take the Pagan aspect very seriously. Yet unlike most pagan bands, the music is excellent, and they don't come off as pretentious vegans. Raw yet still intelligent composed, the accoustic parts in particular are brilliant. Rec albums: Errance Oriniques, Scipilege, Chants de Bataille.

Bethlehem: A unique band with unique vocalists. Its extremely difficult to describe the vocal styles that can be found on the Dictius te Necare (bad latin for you must kill yourself) or the SUZID albums. Suffice to say, you will not hear more pained and extreme vocals elsewhere. Musically, Bethlehem's best work incorporates Black Metal elements alongside Doom and Death elements. The sorrowful guitar solos are really something.Bethlehem referred to this style as Dark Metal. If you like the crazy vocals of this nature, odds are you'd probably like Silencer too. If the vocals are too much, the Dark Metal album has more palatable vocals. The newer material is pretty out there as well. Rec albums: [i[Dark Metal, Dictius to Necare, Sardonischer Untergang im Zeichen irreligiöser Darbietung

Wolves in the Throne Room: I am really into this band at the moment. A band that stands apart from the BM scene, not caring if they fit in, only caring about the music they make. They are unashamedly epic, unafraid of long accoustic parts, ambient parts, female vocals, solid muscianship and hints of post-rock influences. If you are a fan of bands like Burzum and Weakling, you will most likely like this band. Rec albums: Two Hunters, Diadem of 12 Stars.

Clandestine Blaze: Another fine Finnish Black Metal act. CB have got a bit of a buzz around them from what I gather. Fans of classic Darkthrone will be more than satisfied with this bands output. Rec albums: [i[Church of Atrocity, Deliverers of Faith.

Anubi: A very unique act from Lithuania. Anubi are one of the more interesting bands lurking in the avantgarde of BM. Actually, asides from the raspy vocals and some of the songs on their first demo, Anubi hardly qualify as BM. Still, Anubi's music is really interesting and merits looking into. Rec albums: Kai pilnaties akis uzmerks Mirtis, God's Pantheon.

Aeternus: When I listen to this band's early work, I think that this must be what Alexander the Great felt when he first saw War Elephants charging against his troops. Aeternus' music is mid-paced, yet sounds absolutely heavy, menacing and crushing. Aeternus also have a nice flair for folk instrumentals. They were one of my favorite bands for a while but the more recent material is faster and closer to Death Metal and it just doesn't sound menacing anymore. Rec albums: Beyond the Wandering Moon, ...And So the Night Became, Dark Sorcery.

Urfaust: An interesting band I've recently discovered. They are a dutch band with somewhat of an avantgarde flair but don't overdo it, still maintain a solid BM sound. The vocal styles used are absolutely unique, creating a truly chilling effect and are what make Urfaust so damn compelling. The tempo is usually slow and relies on hypnotic/repetitive song structures. Rec albums: Geist ist Teufel, Verräterischer, Nichtswürdiger Geist.

Havohej: BM that's raw, simplistic and hateful. Havohej is one of the more enjoyable bands who play this style. I've known of this band for a while but I wasn't aware until a few weeks ago that Paul Walker, the main man behind this band, is also behind Profanitca who I hear are pretty good. The outro to the Dethrone album is one of the greatest and funniest outros in the history of Metal. Rec albums: Dethrone the Son of God.

In The Woods...: A unique Norwegian act. This band's early work was fairly epic for its time and quirky, and also notable for very high-pitched vocals. ITW's third album, Omnio, is one of my desert island discs. Its a transcendental album that takes you on a journey. But aside from a riff here and there, the album has more in common with Pink Floyd than with BM. Every album this band has done is very high quality. Rec albums: A Return to the Isle of Men, Heart of the Ages, Omnio.

Well, this concludes my user-guides to Black Metal. I hope you've enjoyed all of these guides and have discovered some new bands. Black Metal is a very rich subgenre. Once you look beyond the corpsepaint cliches and the bad bands, there is a wealth of different sounds. From the symphonic to the folk, from the rawest to the most polished, from the most epic to the most minimalistic, from the angry to the melancholic, it can be abrasive or alluringly hypnotic and even relaxing at times. I know this sounds cliched but Black Metal has it all and why its probably my favorite subgenre of Metal.

Writing these guides has been harder than I originally estimated. I've literally added pretty much every BM band I know of or that I consider noteworthy. Yet There are bands I've just discovered that I haven't included, like Farsot, Wold, Necromass, Peste Noire, Wyrd, Sear Bliss, Horn of Valere, Crebain, The Ruins of Beverast, Cobalt, Gnaw Their Tongues, Behexen, Averse Sefira, etc because I haven't had enough time to fully digest them. I'm sure I've missed dozens of great bands that I haven't heard of. If there are any bands you think I've missed, please add them in the comments or in my shoutbox (I'm particularly keen on discovering new Greek BM bands).

If I have enough comments, I might tackle Thrash and Doom-Metal next and the latter might be just as epic as this, given my love of all things Doom. Thanks for reading these and for your interest in Black Metal. As always, keep it heavy.
