    1. What's your favorite song by 14?
Crime in Stereo: Abre Los Ojos, definitely.

    2. How did you get into 20?
Tom Petty: Born into it, really. My mom's been listening to him since long before I was born.

    3. Who is your favorite member in 8?
Death From Above 1979: Tough call, but I think I'm going to have to go with Jesse.

    4. Whats your favorite lyric bit by 29?
Tokyo Police Club: There's no fun in playing cowboys for pretend.

    5. Have you ever seen 22 live?
Wintersleep: Yep, I saw them opening for Portugal. The Man. I had never heard of them before and ended up liking them way more than I do Portugal.

    6. What's your favorite album from 10?
The Gaslight Anthem The '59 Sound

    7. Do you own any merchandise from 3?
Why?: Nothing aside from all their CDs.

    8. What is a good memory you have of 7?
Alien Ant Farm: My middle school years when I really started branching out and investigating more music.

    9. Is there a member of the same age as you in 2?
The Dandy Warhols: Nope, not even close.

    10. When did you first get into 1?
WilcoFall of '07, right around when Sky Blue Sky came out.

    11. Who likes 4 along with you?
The Hives: My brother and my friend Andrew.

    12. Which song did you first hear from 15?
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers: Couldn't tell ya. I have no idea.

    13. What song made you fall in love with 5?
The Pink Spiders: Soft Smoke, I think.

    14. Which song do you not like by 18?
Bon Jovi: There's several. I know them better than any other band, they were my favorite for a long, long time. For the sake of the survey I'll say Who Says You Can't Go Home?, the countrified version. That was directly responsible for Lost Highway, which is by fair their worst album.

    15. Why do you like 14's songs?
Crime in Stereo: They're loud, which I like from time to time, and have a lot of meaning to them.

    16. Where did you first hear 6?
Pavement: In my car. I'd heard a lot about them but never actually heard them, until I was at the record store one day and saw that they had just gotten Slanted & Enchanted in the used section and decided to check it out.

    17. How long was 19 a singer before you liked them?
The Hold Steady: Around four years.

    18. Does 13 have a song that gives you a bad memory?
Oasis: Not that I can think of.

    19. When did you get into 17?
The Weakerthans: Hmm, probably about two years ago. I can't think of how it came to be though.

    20. How long have you been into 11?
The Wallflowers: Like a year and a half.

    21. If 9 had a concert 300 miles away, would you drive there to see them?
Rocky Votolato: Hmm, if it wouldn't interfere with work or anything and I had nothing better to do, sure.

    22. How many CDs do you own of 12?
    The Subways: Both of them.

    23. Does 21 have a song that makes you cry?
    Silversun Pickups: Nope.

    24. Does 27 have a song that makes you happy?
Foxy Shazam: All of their stuff, it's all a lot of fun.

    25. Does 23 have a song that makes you smile?
Explosions in the Sky: Hmm, in a "This is really good." way, all of their stuff could.

    26. What's the last song you've listened to from 28?
Uncle Tupelo: I'm not going to go check and make sure but I think it was TocarScreen Door.

    27. Is there a song by 32 that you've listened to more than 30 times?
Bright Eyes: Something Vague, almost definitely.

    28. What is a song from 50 that you've only listened to once?
    Hazen Street: None.

    29. Is there a song you are sick of hearing by 24?
    Cold War Kids: Nope.

    30. What song got you into 40?
Marcy Playground: Hmm, Sunday Mail, I think.

    31. What is your favorite single by 25?
    The Frantic: TocarAudio & Murder.

    32. If 49 hated you, what would you do?
I Am Robot and Proud: Not care?

    33. What would you say if 42 or one of the members from 42 asked you out?
    Streetlight Manifesto: No.

    34. Would you care if 41 had a boyfriend/girlfriend?
    An Aesthetic Anaesthetic: No?

    35. Who has the best voice in 46?
    Third Eye Blind: Stephan Jenkins.

    36. Do you think 26 is/are good looking?
Tobacco: Haha, he wears a mask! Who would know?

    37. How many times have you listened to your favorite song by 36?
    Ratatat: Lex, twenty.

    38. How many CDs do you own of 30?
    65daysofstatic: One.

    39. Is there a song from 38 that makes you mad?
    Les Savy Fav: Mad? No.

    40. Which member from 31 do you want to see go solo? If 31 is only one artist, what would you do if they joined a group?
    Bright Eyes: Connor Oberst? Haha.

    41. What does your favorite song from 48 remind you of?
Margot & the Nuclear So and So's: TocarBroadripple Is Burning. Driving to school last semester. Listened to it a lot then.

    42. Did you hate 43 at first?
    Maritime: No.

    43. Does your best friend also listen to 33?
Femme Fatale: Yes, thanks to me. Haha.

    44. Do you think your parents would like 37?
Explosions in the Sky: I could see my mom liking them.

    45. Does 47 have a song that makes you want to dance?
At the Drive-In: Haha, sure. Most of their stuff could be danced to, I guess.

    46. Have you ever seen 34 in person?
The Rolling Stones: I don't have that kind of money.

    47. Do you like 44's name?
    The Faint: Nothing special.

    48. Is there someone in 45 that you want to go out with?
    Jawbreaker: No.

    49. Do you know anyone that hates 39?
Aesop Rock: I barely even know anyone that knows who he is.

    50. Have you ever danced to a song from 35?
    Jet: Not really.

  • Atmosphere live in Richmond, take two. (Sunday, May 17, 2009)

    Mai 18 2009, 13h44 por prescribedpills

Atmosphere concert last night! Did I go? Yes! And I actually stayed the whole time except I did leave during the last song because I didn't like it and it was the last song so I wasn't missing anything.

We left late on purpose, because I really just wanted to see Atmosphere, but Brother Ali wasn't finished yet so I just stood around for about a half hour (which seemed like a whole hell of a lot longer) until he was finished. I would've liked to have seen Aesop Rock so much more. Patrick asked me if Atmosphere was Christian too because Brother Ali said that we were having a revival, but Patrick obviously didn't pick up on all the casual swearing. He claims to like Atmosphere and other hip hop artists but he doesn't know anything about them, or any of their songs. Not that most of the people there did, because I saw only two black people and everyone else looked like they got lost on the way to a frat party. It was massively disturbing. I don't think I'll ever accept the fact that there are so many people in my city my age or younger who actually know and pretend to like Atmosphere. There were a bunch of girls grinding on each other like it was a strip club and they were the only ones there, and they kept bumping into me with their ass. It was so Goddamn annoying. And they did this the entire show. At least a dozen of them.

Atmosphere started 15 minutes late, which I expected because even after everything's set up, they make us wait every time. The very first song (God Loves Ugly - one of my favorites!) a bunch of drunk idiots got into a fight on the floor and I got beer spilled all over me. After the next couple songs Slug stopped and addressed the fight, because security did nothing. There weren't even any event staff up by the stage.

I knew of most of the songs Atmosphere performed because I like their old stuff a hell of a lot better. "You Can't Imagine How Much Fun We're Having" was disappointing and I still haven't bought "When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint that Shit Gold" but I do like some of the songs on it. Too bad they didn't do any of them. But since it was the re-release of God Loves Ugly, they played a lot of songs from that: God Loves Ugly, Blamegame, Modern Man's Hustle, Saves the Day, Fuck You Lucy, and One of a Kind. Everyone wanted them to do The Woman with the Tattooed Hands during the encore, but I hate that song. They played it anyway because so many people wanted to hear it. They also did Guns and Cigarettes, Always Coming Back Home to You, and Trying to Find a Balance during the encore because Slug took requests.

I'm assuming Ant DJ'd the entire show because he was up there for Brother Ali, but they're all with Rhymesayers, so he's not just associated with Atmosphere. Plus, Atmosphere also had a keyboardist, a back up vocalist, and a guitarist in addition to Ant, whom Slug said was on "drums." That was the first time I'd ever heard a DJ referred to as a drummer but I guess it's true because Ant keeps the beat.

I couldn't hear myself sing because all the music was so loud so it sounded like I was the only one singing. I could've been. People look at me like I'm strange because I know all the old school Atmosphere songs and don't dance around like a stripper with my lesbian friends. Yeah, I'm the weirdo because I actually came to see a band I like and know in concert! What was I thinking?!

I didn't mind listening to the songs I didn't know the words to, because I was still familiar with them and they actually don't sound as bad live. I love hearing and feeling the bass all around me which is something I can't do when I'm listening to a CD. I really like the bass. I could just listen to that without anything else. But Slug changed the words up so much that the songs I did know, and I for some inexplicable reason I forgot some of the lyrics to the songs I really like. I can sing along with them on my iPod but in concert it's a totally different dynamic because Slug kept stopping and changing the words and skipping parts. He left out the enter last part of Trying to Find a Balance and I was ready to sing it. I wish they did The Keys to Life vs. 15 Minutes of Fame because that's my absolute favorite song by Atmosphere. I also wish they played longer and did a few more songs off Seven's Travels but other than the skankbags all around me, I had fun because the last time I went to see Atmosphere was at Toad's Place and I haaaaate that venue so fucking much and I had to leave early because Patrick had to get back to work at 10:30 and he was my ride so this was the first time since I started listening to Atmosphere in 2003 that I saw their entire show.

  • White Rapper's Delight

    Mai 2 2009, 20h27 por ggnomeproject

First off, I had a good chuckle at Asher Roth (guy who "loves college" so much he'll send you into a boredom coma) saying his label undershipped his album with 100,000 copies for the first week when he couldn't even sell 70,000 copies his first week. Who's the poorly made Imus joke now? You racist, talentless, I'm-not-sure-why-I-wasted-this-many-words-on-you, corporate tool.

But seriously, why does anyone care? Hint: the talentless douche bag above is shrugging for a reason (he really does look like a douche though with the pink background behind his white shirt though, doesn't he?). Or more importantly, why do I care? I don't recall anyone caring that much when Fat Joe or any other Hispanic rapper hit it big. Or when Jin became the first Asian rapper signed to a major label. So why does Assto Mouth (Asher Moth?) get such coverage?

Because he sucks? No, he's terrible--I'll give him that--but not terrible enough to deserve all this coverage/attention.

Because he's white? Adeem, Aesop Rock, Slug (Atmosphere), Cage, El-P: these guys are all white rappers that are more talented but aren't getting Hoofto Mouth's level of media coverage. But I think we might be getting closer.

Because Eminem is old and has no male heir to his throne? Even closer.

Because America didn't get enough Vanilla Ice? Keep going.

Because Americans love to buy worthless shit that only becomes more worthless in time? Actually, that's what the major labels are banking on. It's what they've been banking on since they introduced the first heavily overpriced CDs (CDs are cheaper to produce than cassettes). The major labels are excellent at over-blowing things. Somebody give those guys some swine flu.

RAAAAWR. I AM THE SWINE FLU AND I'M GOING TO KILL YOU ALL. OHHH SHIT, SON.

But since I mentioned Eminem, let's be real about him, too.

    First, his new album sucks.

Edit: If his new singles are any indication (as they have been with his past albums).

Second, his old stuff wasn't much better. Let's be honest. He fell off after D12 - My Band. Okay, I enjoyed the song and then later enjoyed Encore the first couple times I heard it. But he'd really lost it by then.

I still listen to a few of his songs though:

    Without Me
    Sing for the Moment
    Superman
    TocarMockingbird
    Lose Yourself

Beyond that, he's really just a shock rapper who generally hasn't mastered either serious or humorous tones in his lyrics, has an irritating voice; and if it weren't for the Dre beats, his ass would still be underground. But he's the biggest selling rapper of all time. And I don't hate him because he's white. I don't particularly care for Tupac and Jay-Z, the second- and third-highest selling rappers of all time either.

  • Bzangy Groink Playlist 8/4/09

    Abr 11 2009, 12h58 por JyotiMishra

Wednesday's best new track was by Akira Kiteshi and it was the awesome 'Glitch Pt 1&2.' As soon as I first (illegally) heard this stuttering, grunting, groinking track, I nipped onto iTunes and bought the single. Wonderful, rich electronic music.

The best old track was by tonight's featured artist, The Hidden Cameras. Although it could have been any of them, I have to go with 'A Miracle' as this song has helped me through some dark times. Joel Gibb's voice, the beautiful lyrics and the silky strings add up to one of my favourite ever recordings.

    This is what I played:

    Bad Religion - American Jesus
Pedro the Lion - Foregone Conclusions
    Aardvarck - Untitled
    Aesop Rock - Zodiaccupuncture
    Black Flag - Louie Louie
    The Narrator - SurfJew
    Loefah - disko rekah
    Fireside - Left Rustle
Friendly Fires - Jump In The Pool
The Cramps - Goo Goo Muck
    The Hidden Cameras - AWOO
Royce Da 5'9 & Mc Jean Gab'1 - Internationally Known
    Metric - Monster Hospital
    Mistabishi - Printer Jam
    Remasculate - Leaves Eyes Cream
    Skream - oskilatah
    Micachu - Golden Phone
    121 Crew - Stop it
Filthy Dukes - This Rhythm (Radio Edit)
    Sky Larkin - Beeline
    Skinnyman - No Big Ting
The Hidden Cameras - I Believe In The Good Of Life
The Decemberists - The Rake's Song
Foreign Beggars - 2nd Hand Contraband
    Emalkay - crunk in space
    Brakes - Hey Hey
The Juan Maclean - No Time
Smashing Orange - All Girls Are Mine

Soft Toy Emergency - I Kno U Want It
Canadian Invasion - The Carcass Of John Mayer
    LCD Soundsystem - Get Innocuous!
    Factor Feat Ceschi - Pray
The Gay Blades - O Shot
MF DOOM - My Favorite Ladies / Remain (Feat. Jose Gonz-Lez)
