I've recently been interested again in Japanese underground/alternative hip-hop music and for a starter I picked up the new CD from MC Cypress Ueno and DJ Roberto Yoshino, even though I didn't really know who they are or where they have come from. I tried previwing it at a CD store just because I had read an article citing them on the web a few days ago, and then I found their music so funny and funky and now really love it. In addition to the duo joints, this CD also features a guest appearance by Utamaru from legendary group Rhymester and a collaboration with rock band Sly Mongoose.

Last week, Japanese DJ/trackmaker Deckstream released his highly-anticipated second original album, Deckstream Soundtracks 2. Just as on the previous album, which featured Camp Lo, Talib Kweli and Lupe Fiasco, all the tracks are produced by Deckstream himself and performed by big-name singers/MCs, such as Mos Def, Substantial, N'Dea Davenport, Nice & Smooth and T-Boz this time around. This sophomore set also features a guest spot from L-Universe, aka VERBAL of m-flo, who is a labelmate of Deckstream and was featured on "Can You Let Me Know."

One of my most favorite R&B artists India.Arie just released her long-awaited fourth studio album, Testimony: Vol. 2, Love & Politics, which is the follow-up to 2006's Vol. 1, Life & Relationship. As preceded by the up-tempo lead track "TocarTherapy," this entire album is very sunny, positive and inspiring while dealing with complicated topics like love and politics. Although many guests are credited as featured performers, you don't have to worry, because there is nothing but India.Arie's music on this CD. Anyway, I would really like to see her live again!

  • Underated/Slept On Artists...

    Jul 31 2008, 20h29 por JNellz

There are SOOOO many artists out there that are trying to make it, but probably never will. The problem is, people don't want REAL music anymore. People with ZERO talent can get a record deal and go platinum(I'm not sayin' that everyone that goes platinum has no talent, c'mon...my favorite artist is Alicia Keys). I don't get it. I find a new artist pretty much everyday, and these people have TALENT. People like Conya Doss, Algebra, Kissey Asplund, Sy Smith, Wayna(she's about to be my new favorite artist, I promise you. Her Higher Ground album is great.), Lina, Ayo, Choklate, Esperanza Spalding, Alice Smith, Amel Larrieux, Santogold, Tamia, Res, Carla Duren, Kokoh, Syleena Johnson, Esthero and even Goapele, Chrisette Michele, and Ledisi will probably NEVER be that successful.*

Look out for Janelle Monáe, Jazmine Sullivan, Keri Hilson, Solange(yes SOLANGE!),Mylah,Teedra Moses, and Michelle Williams.

However, it's good to see people like Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, and India.Arie doin' their thing. Even Ledisi is doin' her thing. Congrats.

Yes, I listen to a lot of females, so this list is pretty much ALL females. But the males that deserve success are Dwele, Raheem DeVaughn, Raphael Saadiq, Justin Nozuka, Amp Fiddler, and Rahsaan Patterson. I'm tryin' to get into more males, so if you have any recommendations, please...help me out. (Van Hunt, Eric Roberson...)

    Anyways, what are y'all's thoughts?

*Like I said, I find a new artist everyday, so more and more people will be added.

  • My music collection : Weekly update (2008/01/28 to 2008/03/08)

    Mar 8 2008, 18h42 por Smiling_Tears

Holla ! It's been while since the last the time posted a article. During the last month to today, I didn't buy a lot of CD.

    So I received :

DOUBLE - 10 YEARS BEST WE R&B -Standard Edition-
DOUBLE - 10 YEARS BEST WE R&B -Complete Edition-
Soulfinger Experience - Tout est possible
Adriana Evans - Remixes, Vol. 1: All for Love (Smith Remix) - EP (Itunes audio)
DJ Deckstream feat. jUjU Bee - Love & Hate. Hate & Love - EP (Itunes audio)
DJ KAORI & DOUBLE - Miss DJ!!
TLC - Hands Up (So So Def Remix) (Promo Single)
TLC - Girl Talk (Kidstuff New Vocal Dub Mix) (UK Promo single)
TLC - Hands Up (UK Promo)
    TLC - Damaged (EU Promo)
    TLC - Turntable (Promo)
    TLC - Turntable (UK Promo)

Double's album is the best one I ordered for a while. This contains everything you need on DOUBLE : 2 CDS, a DVD and a photobook, it's the best greatest hits album I ever bought !!!

I bought soulfinger experience's album, because I loved "Juste m'imaginer", and finally I didn't regret to buy it. This album is very good, it's very relaxing, perfect if you want to chill out with good sound !

I downloaded at Itunes an Adriana Evans's single and DJ Deckstream's lastest EP. I've to say that both are excellent, I'm loving them !

I bought TLC's promo singles because I didn't have some songs on them and because there was an auction with all of them for 10$.

The 1st albums I received this year are:

    Adriana Evans - Adriana Evans
DJ HASEBE - adore the remixes

I finally received them !!! I wanted them so bad !!!

Adriana Evans's self titled album is so good, I can't say what is my favourite song. I love the way she mixes R&B, Hip-Hop and Jazz, I recommend this album to everyone who love chill-out music..

For DJ Hasebe's EP, I already made a review about it.

    Cherish
    DJ Deckstream

DJ Deckstream is a Japanese trackmaker, who's best known for producing beats/remixes for other Japanese artists such as MIC BANDITZ, m-flo and Heartsdales. This is his first album of original materials (not remixes) and featuring some big-name American MCs/singers including Talib Kweli, Lupe Fiasco, Zion I and Adriana Evans. You can preview 4 tracks off of this cd on his MySpace page.

Cherish's debut album, Unappreciated, was released in August of 2006 and back then I wasn't interested in it enough to check out the whole album, but more recently I've been very impressed with their unique songwriting and vocal productions and thought of trying this cd, especially since I fell in love with Shoe Fanatic, the first single from their upcoming new album. The sophomore album from them, Truth, is now planned to be released in February 2008.

  • I'm in LOVE with last.fm

Last.fm for the past 24 hours has been musical bliss!

When I listen to music, I am listening for the vibe and the arrangement of the music. If it makes me want to get out of my seat or relax and it moves me in some way, I will love it. Some of the lyrics to many songs are a hot mess but I think A Tribe Called Quest, 2 Pac, Black Sheep, De La Soul, Public Enemy and Pharcyde are truly lyrics that I can still relate to today.

However, when I moved to the Midwest, I had to discover music on my own. This is when I think I went totally Prince. I've always loved Prince but his music saved my sanity. All of his music captured how I was feeling and how he was feeling at the time. So we fed off each other. I will admit that I have ALL yes ALL of his CDs but I go through moods and I can pick any one of his CDs for that mood I am in.

My classical and jazz collection exploded too. I stopped watching TV because most of my time I was studying, sleeping or praying to get out of graduate school! Sometimes I did blast Public Enemy when certain people made me mad but I rarely did that.

A wonderful soothing and practical CD that anyone should have is called The Mozart Effect by Dan Campbell. Using the CD helped me focus on my studies. Dan Campbell has an entire series of Mozart collections that he has arranged for certain projects that you may be undertaking. Also, Amel Larrieux's Infinite Possibilities album & Adriana Evans debut album were in constant play.

I thought moving to NYC that I would have no problems getting back to listening to the radio. But, I never did and I still do not listen to the radio. I only listen to the radio for NPR but now I tune into everything on my computer.

Tower Records at 66th and Broadway used to be my hangout. When it closed 2 months ago, I almost lost my mind. Although I did not buy much there, the store clerks taught me a lot about different artists that I did not even consider buying or listening to but I respected their advice. I bought a lot of World Music, Classical and Jazz after getting wonderful advice from the staff.

So my discovery yesterday of last.fm was the best thing that happened to me in a long time.

I was trying to discover new music on myspace but I was not feeling the vibe there. Last.fm is a much better environment. I am still learning how to use everything here but I am really happy to find a place to be me and explore my eclectic tastes.

This is definitely a "social music revolution."

    Thank you last.fm!
