XDD)

Para verla más grande pincha aquí!

Y ya de paso os recomiendo escuchar este grupazo, Adam and the Ants. Sólo llegaron a publicar tres discos, pero qué discos...

Para mí los dos mejores son Kings of the Wild Frontier

    y Prince Charming

  • The Unlikely Cross Cultural Impact of Malcolm McLaren

    Jan 29 2009, 3h18 por dvoodoo

I recently contributed some additional info and tags to the Malcolm McLaren wiki bio here at Last.fm. Since the man has always had an interesting career in my opinion and has played a key role in several of my all time fave music groups, I thought I'd repost the new wiki entry here.

Since his birth, just after the end of WWII, Malcolm McLaren (born on January 22nd, 1946 in London England) has had a varied, if not altogether unlikely cross cultural career.

He began as an Art School dropout and late 60's campus radical before becoming a Kings Row merchant, moving into band management, and roles as socio-political instigator, quasi-musician himself, wry social commentator & influential media manipulator.

In the late 1960s he started designing clothes and by 1972 he opened a clothing boutique in London with his then girlfriend, Vivienne Westwood.

In 1975, after a failed stint at managing & relaunching the image of the notoriously hard living and chaotic band The New York Dolls, Malcolm nurtered the formation of one of the most infamous punk bands in history, The Sex Pistols. He became their manager, and controlled their contracts, as well as most importantly to him, their image in the media. The venture ended in a disastrous US tour, and a film called "The Great Rock and Roll Swindle" that featured McLaren, and glorified his untraditional Situationist PR approach and manipulative Svengali-esque role in the band's career.

In the '80s, after The Sex Pistols had long broken up, Malcolm became the manager of another band, Adam and the Ants which veered away from punk's coarse format via new romantic pirate garb and poly rhythmic African style drumming. When Adam Ant rebelled and left the band, Malcolm repackaged the musicians with a 14 year old Anglo/Burmese girl named Annabella Lwin to form the band Bow Wow Wow. He soon used his headline making skills to propel the band and their underage lead singer to the top of the charts with a nude album cover scandal.

In the early 1980's, Malcolm began producing his own records, beginning with the hits "TocarBuffalo Gals" and "TocarDouble Dutch" from the groundbreaking 1983 album "Duck Walk" which used NYC hip hoppers and scratch DJ's The World Famous Supreme Team, as it's foundation. He next turned to opera, masterminding a pop adaptation of "Madam Butterfly" on the album "Fans" using an assortment of female vocalists, and skilled musician Robby Kilgore on the tracks.

McLaren has released numerous other albums and tracks since, including efforts that took influences from classical, asian and european influences. Contributions to the movie soundtracks included Carry On Columbus, No Small Affair and Kill Bill 2, but his musical career peaked with his 1980's works. McLaren's original "TocarDouble Dutch" era material has since been reappropriated and sampled by successful newer artists including Mariah Carey ( TocarHoney ), Eminem ( TocarWithout Me ), Amerie ( Some Like It )and De La Soul.

McLaren, now in is 60's, has occasionally contributed to newspapers and magazines, directed and produced films and radio shows, as well as appeared on British reality television programmes.

  • A lot of love for Ants....

    Jan 6 2009, 2h51 por meako1973

Well, tonight I have been listening to my old Adam & The Ants albums (okay, my mp3 collection of my old albums) and I have to say that they are still as amazing as they were when I first heard them. The result is a fair few hearts getting tagged onto tracks this evening!

I was all of about 8 or 9 when I was introduced to the work of Stuart Goddard and his band of merry men (Marco, Merrick, Terry Lee and Kevin Mooney - soon replaced by Garry Tibbs), and it was all down to the iconic imagery the band presented capturing my imagination. Adam Ant (Goddards stage name) was in his 'Highwayman' phase, and the video for Antmusic was (for the time) a treat to catch a glimpse of on TV. There was something alluring about the whole image of the dandy highwayman than made me want to be a part of this musical movement - for indeed it is tricky to catalogue Antmusic as anything but that, it being a strange post-punk/early new romanticism/nomadic sounding/tribal affray of music. No doubt Ant's romany heritage had something to do with the look and sound he would go on to create.

Anyway, I digress, that is stuff for a wiki article, but doesn't say anything about my love for the music. Well, thanks to having a big sister with a great taste in music (it was she who got me into good stuff like Iron Maiden, Pink Floyd, etc), I got access to the LP of Kings of the Wild Frontier and was blown away by it. It was probably the first album that I would listen to over and over again, and study the details of the sleeve notes and lyrics sheets as though preparing for an exam on it. I wanted to be Adam Ant (and thanks to having sisters wanting to practice make-up on I occasionally found myself daubed with eyeliner, eye shadow, beautyspots, and a long white stripe over the nose).

I stopped listening to Ant-music around my mid to late teens, and it was in my final year at university when I spied a CD of Kings of the Wild Frontier on a shelf in HMV. A shiver ran down my spine, and trepidation at buying it - would it still be as good as I remembered, or was it foolish childhood imagination? Well, I took the gamble and picked it up for £14.99 (no discounted sale item here - this was a real purchase). I got back to my rented room, popped it in, and must have listened to it 4 or 5 times that night! It really was as good as I recalled.

Suffice to say the next day saw me pop out to pick up the remaining copy of Dirk Wears White Sox, and Prince Charming, and I have never looked back, going on to pick up all the Adam Ant solo projects and finding what I had missed out on. Now, on a regular basis, I listen to my old friend Adam Ant and just cannot help but tap along to the tracks, and dream of once more dressing as a dandy highwayman. So why not throw your safety overboard and join our insect nation?

2009 looks like it may be a good year for the memories as Goddard has returned to the studio with plans for some new material.
