  • Статистика, часть 4: black metal // Stats, part 4: black metal

    Ago 16 2009, 14h22 por -273C

Продолжение статистических изысканий. Предыдущие посты см. здесь, здесь и здесь.

A new chapter of statistical researches. The previous entries on the topic you can find here, here and here.

Today the black metal will be the field of our researches. By the way, watching a hundred of black metal artists' pages gives a kind of perverted aesthetic pleasure) Also, there's some good news: I've got a script by Hzlqgmnzhh (great thanks to him), and by its help I can a) collect the needed stats quickly b) obtain the shoutbox stats for each artist. So, a couple of new graphs awaits us now.

Сначала наша традиционная статистика по числу слушателей и прослушиваний (логарифмический масштаб).

First of all, our traditional statistics by playcount and number of listeners (semi-logarithmic scale).

    Pic. 1 - full size

    Pic. 2 - full size

Лидируют в обоих номинациях "праклятые пазеры" Dimmu Borgir и Cradle of Filth. А вот на следующем графике представлен общий вид зависимости числа прослушиваний от числа слушателей.

"Damned posers" Dimmu Borgir and Cradle of Filth are heading both charts. And on the next graph a general view of playcount to number of kisteners dependence is represented.

    Pic. 3

So what? The points can be satisfactory interpolated be a straight line, and their scattering is less than in previously studied genres. In fact, that means Dimmu Borgir and Cradle of Filth do not deviate from "genre standards". One can easily see, the difference is quantitative, not qualitative.

    Pic. 4 - full size

A straight consequence of low level of scattering in pic. 3 is low level of scattering in specific number of scrobbles. The average specific number of scrobbles is around 37. Maximal values belong to not so famous bands Absurd, Lifelover and Infernal War, whose specific numbers of scrobbles are from 75 to 80. For popular bands these values are close to the average.

    Pic. 5

Наша традиционная гистограмма распределения исполнителей по удельному числу прослушиваний. Пик вокруг среднего значения довольно широк, зато в хвосте - единичные исполнители.

Our traditional specific number of scrobbles histogram. The peak around the average value is rather broad, and only a several artists belong to the tale.

А теперь немного новой статистики, связанной с активностью в рупоре исполнителя.

And now, some new stats related to the activity in shoutboxes.

    Pic. 6

Here's the messages-in-shoutbox-to-number-of-listeners plot. The data is rather scattered (though one can say, more popular artists have more messages in general), so there's nothing really interesting here, except Burzum falling far from others with over 9000 messages in their shoutbox. That's not so surprising, taking into account their reputation and the fact they in a way represent the whole genre, so everyone who wants to make some trolling around black metal goes right to their shoutbox. And, yes, Varg have been released some time ago)

    Pic.7

The last graph appears to me to be much more interesting. Without Burzum, we have something like a potential barrier here: only artists with more-than-average specific number of scrobbles can have many messages in their shoutboxes. I consider it to be not so trivial result. It's interesting, if that feature would be well represented in another genres.

P.S. Всего на last.fm наслушано около 200 миллионов black metal-треков.
Overall, there's about 200 millions of black metal tracks scrobbled on last.fm.

  • Omega_Switch's Listism, Pt. 1: Black Metal

    Jul 29 2009, 5h11 por Omega_Switch22B

Herein lies a simple and relatively predictable shitfest of a list, composed of my top 75 favorite black metal albums. This was originally going to consist of 100 albums, but I decided that 100 albums was simply too much for such a sad excuse for a list. This is probably my third time to cover this subject matter after about 3 years on last.fm, but I don't care. I have time to kill, and, if you're actually reading this, then so do you.
Here's the full list: LINK IST KRIEG

    1. Emperor- Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk (1997)

One of the most epic albums ever produced. Simply put, this immaculate creation will crush your soul, given enough time. This album has stayed at #1 in my mind ever since I got into black metal years ago, and it hasn't moved since.

    2. Drudkh- Autumn Aurora (Also: Forgotten Legends) (2004, 2003)

Another incredibly epic album, but of a completely different kind. Whereas most BM albums focus on being as grim, sinister, and ugly as possible, Autumn Aurora is a true diamond in the rough. What it lacks in evil aggression it more than makes up for with truly magnificent songwriting and execution; sublime reverence to the power of nature and the shifting seasons. Forgotten Legends is just as epic, albeit slower and gloomier.

    3. Burzum- Hvis Lyset Tar Oss (Also: Filosofem) (1994, 1996)

No BM list would be complete with mentioning Burzum. Forget the hype, Hvis lyset tar oss is as oppressive and tortured as any album has the right to be. It set the pace for the atmospheric BM scene, and also set the benchmark, which has yet to be surpassed- with the possible exception of Drudkh.

    4. Mayhem- De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas (Also: Wolf's Lair Abyss) (1994, 1997)

Yet another predictable inclusion... Mayhem are the true masters of black metal. With these two releases, they defined the 2nd wave straight-forward assault- as opposed to Burzum's atmospheric and Emperor's symphonic black metal. Give them some time, and the immense power of their sound should become apparent, as gloriously ridiculous as these albums are

    5. Blut aus Nord- Ultima Thulée (1995)

If there's one album whose original cover accurately portrays the album's sound, it's this one. Ultima Thulée encapsulates a frost-bitten world, beaten by the relentless winter, covered in the barren ice, and sculpted by the sheer wind. As one of the first so-called ambient black metal albums, Vindsval got his formula just right with his first try. Some say The Work Which Transforms God is his/their best release- I won't argue that it's the most accomplished/innovative-, but I vastly prefer this one.

    6. Bethlehem- Sardonischer Untergang Im Zeichen Irreligiöser Darbietung (1998)

The "suicidal" or depressive black metal scene has become a self-parody in it's short existence, but Bethlehem showed how it's done properly well before the supposed scene even formed. Their first two albums are quite distinguished, but the apply-named S.U.I.Z.I.D. is by far their best work of tortured art. Ridiculous in every sense, it somehow remains one of the most captivating black metal albums I've ever listened to.

    7. Weakling- Dead as Dreams (2000)

USBM has been plagued by countless generic clones of Burzum and the like, with a few original artists coming through the murk- I Shalt Become and Leviathan come to mind. Weakling only released one album, but that one album- Dead as Dreams- contains as much epic songwriting and emotional vigor than almost any band's discography that I can think of combined. In a sense, they were the Esoteric of black metal. They're music is densely layered, incredibly solid and difficult to listen to in its entirety, but also incredibly rewarding- taking into consideration the stark differences in styles here. If you can get through this album in one listen, more power to you, because you'll be glad you did.

    8. Darkthrone- A Blaze In The Norther Sky (1991)

If there's any album that's responsible for setting off the 2nd wave of black metal, it's this. But that's not why it sits at #10 on my. It's placed here because it is also one of the best 2nd wave albums ever. It is one of the grittiest albums I've ever heard, but it's so damn good because of it. While their following albums tend to lump on into unfocused territory, but this album is so purposeful- it aims to kick you in the ass and violate your ears in every way possible. Needless to say, it set the benchmark for raw black metal in the 90s.

    9. Wolves in the Throne Room- Two Hunters (2007)

Many purists will Wolves as "trendy" band who caters to the weak, as this band doesn't submit to the pseudo-satanic garbage that plagues black metal. Forget these claims, this band is the pinnacle of black metal today. Give Two Hunters several dedicated listens, and you might begin to understand why... or, better yet, just see them perform live. Truly entrancing atmospheric black metal with more spirit and artistic merit than most BM bands could ever dream of possessing.

    10. Bathory- Under the Sign of the Black Mark (1986)

Without a doubt in my mind, Under the Sign is the quintessential first-wave album. It embodies everything that early black metal was- raw, primitive, satanic, and completely unpolished-, since his first three albums defined early black metal- fuck, they CREATED black metal. There isn't much to say about this one, aside from the above, and that it's a drunken storm of mindless hatred and aggression. And it's so fucking good...

    11. Ulver- Bergtatt (1994)

Ulver have become well known for so many musical innovations that it's truly remarkable, and it all started here- well, unless you count their first demo. Bergtatt is one of the most balanced and accessible black metal albums ever produced, in that it combines beautiful folk aesthetics with well-composed and produced Norwegian BM. The formula doesn't sound all that impressive, but the results are. It's the perfect introduction to the world of Ulver, and is flawlessly polarized with Nattens Madrigal.

    12. Dissection- The Somberlain (Also: Storm of the Light's Bane) (1993, 1996)

As the indisputable kings of melodic black metal, Dissection practically invented the sound with The Somberlain. With a dash of Swedish death metal, as well as considerable Iron Maiden-esque influences, Dissection created a black metal formula that is as beautiful as it is brutal. Many claim Storm of the Light's Bane to be their best, but I see both albums as equals- I just prefer their first one, which is slightly less polished, but equally epic.

    13. Enslaved- Below the Lights (Also: Isa) (2003, 2004)*

This is an album I have difficulty including here, since it really does have more an "extreme progressive" metal sound than a black metal sound- also noted by the band members-, but it's got enough black metal style to justify its inclusion. And it's just too great to not include. Monumension pushed the boundaries of Enslaved's signature viking-influenced music, injecting 70s prog-rock influences and more ambitious songwriting. Below the Lights marks their creative peak and most accomplished work to date.

    14. Windir- Arntor (1999)

Speaking of epic... Arntor is the very essence of the word. Taking viking-influenced melodic black metal to the limits of its potential, Windir create an amazing work of art. It features sublime production values- which don't pervert its sound, unlike 1184-, incredible songwriting, and immense atmosphere. What else could you ask for?

    15. Negură Bunget- Om (2006)

This is an album that I put off listening to for quite some time. The first listen proved unremarkable, but later I found just how brilliant this album is. The Drudkh comparisons are inevitable, but OM has a more abstract and experimental sound than any of Drudkh's efforts. It's difficult for me to describe just what makes this album so effective, but with more listens I'm sure I'll be even more convinced of its brilliance.

    16. Emperor- In the Nightside Eclipse (1994)

Some will probably blast me for putting Anthems above this, but I don't care. In the Nightside Eclipse is still a brilliant album, and in a different way. It uses rather minimal structures with symphonic touches to evoke incredible atmospheres, and this formula is just as effective. I just prefer Anthems, sorry.

    17. Sacramentum- Far Away From The Sun (1996)

While Dissection started the melodic BM scene, Sacramentum perfected the sound with this album. If anything, I prefer this to Storm of the Light's Bane, even though this is heavily influenced by it.

    18. Satyricon- Dark Medieval Times (Also: Nemesis Divina) (1993, 1996)

Yes, Satyricon have "sold out" and catered to the mainstream by returning to the rock roots of black metal. So what? While the quality of their post-RE releases are questionable, their first three albums are pure black metal brilliance, with DMT in particular. It is so deliciously raw, oppressive, and epic, and the songwriting from these then-budding musicians is sublime. The Shadowthrone and Nemesis Divina are just as great- the latter being a pure storm of violent black metal, albeit more polished.

    19. Lunar Aurora- Andacht (Also: Elixir of Sorrow) (2007, 2004)

This often overlooked German band has produced some of the finest black metal of the past decade. For proof, look no further than albums like Andacht, Elixir of Sorrow, and Zyklus. With their raw and immersive style, they put a new spin on the term "oppressive". Andacht was their magnum opus, and was far more polished and concise than their previous albums.

    20. Darkthrone- Transilvanian Hunger (Also: Under a Funeral Moon) (1994, 1993)

Of coarse... the notorious Transilvanian Hunger. While A Blaze sparked the flame for the 2nd wave, this album helped spawn countless raw BM projects that practically mimic this album. While it's not as inspired as A Blaze, it's minimalist atmosphere is incredibly effective. Under a Funeral Moon also deserves major props.

    21. Walknut- Graveforests And Their Shadows (2007)

As one of the most promising BM bands to come out in the past few years, Walknut have blessed us with their truly oppressive- damn I use that word too much...- and melancholic atmospheric BM, in the vein of Drudkh's Forgotten Legends. They are by no means a carbon copy, as their sound retains a sense of originality and spirit that few others can match.

    22. In the Woods...-HEart of the Ages (1995)*

Known for pushing the boundaries within the realms of progressive metal, In the Woods... did exactly that with black metal in this release. At first, it seems boring and pointless, but, given time, it reveals itself to be a masterful release. Nothing quite like this has been produced since.

    23. Deathspell Omega- Si Monumentum Requires, Circumspice (2004)

Honestly, I had a difficult time understanding all the hype surrounding this band. Then I gave this album a firm listen, and I finally understood. Immaculate songwriting meets massive atmosphere and, for once, intelligent satanic lyrics. Yes, this album deserves all the hype it receives... but still, fuck the "orthodox" black metal scene.

    24. Ulver- Nattens Madrigal (1997)

While Bergatt was a beautiful and accessible BM album- perfect for newcomers-, Nattens Madrigal is its polar opposite. It is one of the rawest and most primitive albums ever produced, and has become notorious for its means of production. Don't let the abysmal production job fool you, for underneath the murk lies incredible songwriting. If anything, this is just as accomplished as Bergtatt.

    25. Shining-III - Angst - Självdestruktivitetens Emissarie (2002)

This is the only Shining album worth owning. Once again I will use the word oppressive to describe an album, but it's more appropriate here than with any other. This is Shining at their grimmest, most extreme, and self-destructive

    26. Immortal- Pure Holocaust (Also: Sons of Northern Darkness (1993, 2002)

Even though they are the reigning self-parody of black metal, their music speaks for itself. Pure Holocaust took their debut and thrashed it into bits with its immense speed and icy atmosphere.

    27. ColdWorld- Melancholie² (2008)

The past few years have been surprisingly good for black metal, and ColdWorld is yet another newcomer to produce some of the best BM I've heard in ages. Melacholie is a surprisingly well-crafted and produced monster, much in the vein of Lunar Aurora's Andacht, but it's polished sound does not demean its atmosphere- it accentuates it. With his sound, ColdWorld paints vivid imagery of the beauty and struggle of the depths of the cold, isolated winter.

    28. Enslaved- Blodhemn (Also: Vikingligr Veldi) (1998, 1994)

While Eld is often cited as their best black metal album, I definitely favor Blodhemn, which seems to be a more inspired release. It's their most straight-forward assault, with an enraged sound blasting like a war cry. Vikingligr Veldi is just as noteworthy, displaying early Enslaved in a different light, whose minimal and progressive approach is just as devastating.

    29. Drudkh- Blood in Our Wells (2006)

After The Swan Road, Drudkh's songwriting seemed to become much more ambitious, utilizing the same repetitious and entrancing nature with more varied structures. The result here is just as immense as their previous efforts, but in a different sense. It's a crushing album, needless to say.

    30. Taake- Nattestid Ser Porten Vid... (1999)

    31. Lurker of Chalice- Lurker of Chalice (2005)
    32. Darkspace- Dark Space III (Also: Dark Space II) (2008, 2005)
    33. Burzum- Det Som Engang Var (1993)
    34. Summoning- Stronghold (1999)
    35. Abigor- Verwüstung / Invoke the Dark Age (1994)
    36. Borknagar- Borknagar (1996)
    37. Absu- Tara (2001)
    38. Tormentor- Anno Domini (1988)
    39. Limbonic Art- Moon In Scorpio (1996)
    40. Nachtmystium- Instinct: Decay (2006)
    41. Krohm- The Haunting Presence (2007)
    42. Leviathan- Tentacles of Whorror (2004)
    43. Immortal- Battles in the North (1995)
    44. Fen- The Malediction Fields (2009)
    45. Marduk- Opus Nocturne (1994)
    46. Paysage d'Hiver- Winterkaelte (2002)
    47. Gorgoroth- Antichrst (1996)
    48. Sear Bliss- Phantoms (Also: Glory and Perdition) (1996, 2003)
    49. Lifelover- Konkurs (2008)
    50. Diabolical Masquerade- Nightwork (1998)
    51. Amesoeurs- Ruines Humaines (2006)
    52. Judas Iscariot- To Embrace the Corpses Bleeding (Also: Thy Dying Light) (2002, 1996)

  • Music-related question shit.

    Jun 17 2009, 18h34 por Grimkrieg

    1. What's your favorite song by 15?
    Mortifera

    Le Revenant is fucking fantatstic.

    2. How did you get into 20?
    Cobalt

I found them on the Profound Lore releases page.

    3. Who is your favorite member in 1?
    Agalloch

    John Haughm

    4. Whats your favorite lyric bit by 29?
    Bethlehem

Basically all of TocarSecond Coming off of Dark Metal is golden.

    Black hopelessness
    venoms the hidden unholiness
    of your withered virgin

    speechless remonstration
    grinds the arches
    of your risen dominion

    dark superstition
    drinks coagulated blood
    of your blasphemic lust

the age of the glorified god
    yields to a cold endlessness
    which, with vivid stiffness
    awaits my resignation

    the second coming
    the faceless lash
    in the unholiness
    of my destination

    5. Have you ever seen 22 live?
    In Flames

No, and I never would. Anything they released after around say, '97, has been shitty. They have become pop metal faggots.

    6. What's your favorite album from 10?
    Burzum

    Probably Burzum/Aske or Filosofem

    7. Do you own any merchandise from 3?
    Drudkh

I have the limited box-set for the new album ordered, so I will soon...

    8. What is a good memory you have of 7?
    Amesoeurs

Reading Audrey's angry myspace bulletin calling Neige a bitch was absolutely hilarious. Unfortunately, it also signaled the end of Amesoeurs... so I suppose it was more bittersweet, than good.

    9. Is there a member of the same age as you in 2?
    Anaal Nathrakh

    No.

    10. When did you first get into 8?
    Primordial

In 2007, when To the Nameless Dead came out.

    11. Who likes 4 along with you?
    Alcest

    Quite a number of people...

    12. Which song did you first hear from 16?
    Peste Noire

Dueil angoisseus (Christine de Pisan, 1362-1431), it remains my favourite song by them.

    13. What song made you fall in love with 5?
    Professor Fate

    Probably TocarLimbo

    14. Which song do you not like by 18?
    Dark Tranquillity

some of the songs off Skydancer rub me the wrong way.

    15. Why do you like 14's songs?
    Lamented Souls

ICS Vortex's voice is absolutely amazing.

    16. Where did you first hear 6?
    Arcturus

From a friend, about four years ago.

    17. How long was 19 a singer before you liked them?
    Austere

Well, they formed in 2007, and I only got into them after the most recent album, so: two years.

    18. Does 13 have a song that gives you a bad memory?
    Shining

    No.

    19. When did you get into 17?
    Long Distance Calling

    Last year: 2008.

    20. How long have you been into 9?
    Katatonia

not very long; a month or two

    21. If 11 had a concert 300 miles away, would you drive there to see them?
    ColdWorld

No. This questionnaire was obviously written by an American, nobody civilized still uses the imperial system of measurement.

300 kilometres costs a lot in gas money.

    22. How many CDs do you own of 12?
    Wolves in the Throne Room

Just the newest one, Black Cascade, unfortunately.

    23. Does 21 have a song that makes you cry?
    Summoning

Those poor (some lord of the rings creature)!! excuse me while I sob...

    No. They do not.

    24. Does 27 have a song that makes you happy?
    Peccatum

TocarVeils of Blue, because it's so fucking good.

    25. Does 23 have a song that makes you smile?
    Ulver

    TocarPlates 21-22 is really hilarious.

    26. What's the last song you've listened to from 28?
    Ahab

    Probably TocarOld Thunder.

    27. Is there a song by 32 that you've listened to more than 30 times?
    Senmuth

I only have 36 plays of them, so it's pretty unlikely.

    28. What is a song from 50 that you've only listened to once?
    Mystic Forest

    TocarSoumis A Ces Lianes

    29. Is there a song you are sick of hearing by 24?
    Borknagar

    Any track Vintersorg is on.

    30. What song got you into 40?
    Swallow the Sun

A couple buddies who like both melo-death and doom.

    31. What is your favorite single by 25?
    Byla

    No singles, only full lengths.

    32. If 49 hated you, what would you do?
    Disarmonia Mundi

I would laugh - they aren't very scary.

    33. What would you say if 42 or one of the members from 42 asked you out?
    Amorphis

    WHAT THE FUCK.

    34. Would you care if 41 had a boyfriend/girlfriend?
    Abigor

Some twelve year old girl must have written this...

    WHO GIVES A SHIT.

    35. Who has the best voice in 46?
    Mayhem

    DEAD.

    36. Do you think 26 is/are good-looking?
    Sigh

    Dr Mikannibal is pretty hot.

    37. How many times have you listened to your favorite song by 36?
    Black Lotus

    TocarTerra Hiberna, nine times.

    38. How many CDs do you own of 30?
    Vulture Industries

None, though I should get their debut. It's fucking good.

    39. Is there a song from 38 that makes you mad?
    Darkthrone

FOAD makes me want people to FOAD.

    40. Which member from 31 do you want to see go solo? If 31 is only one artist, what would you do if they joined a group?
    Orakle

The whole is greater than the sum of it's parts. I wouldn't want any of them to go solo.

    41. What does your favorite song from 3 remind you of?
    Drudkh

    The forests.

    42. Did you hate 43 at first?
    Bathory

    No.

    43. Does your best friend also listen to 33?
    Gorgoroth

    Yes.

    44. Do you think your parents would like 37?
    Wigrid

    LOL NO.

    45. Does 47 have a song that makes you want to dance?

    Pain

    No

    47. Do you like 44's name?
    Ice Ages

    48. Is there someone in 45 that you want to go out with?
    Forgotten Woods

    I THINK NOT.

    49. Do you know anyone that hates 39?

  • Yet another 10 death metal albums you need to hear but probably haven't

    Mai 20 2009, 3h53 por baltech22

Fourth in a series of two.
See parts ONE, TWO and THREE

This time, they're in chronological order

    Sempiternal Deathreign[NED] - The Spooky Gloom [1989]

Here's a band every Obituary fan should listen to and realize how foolish they've been to have worshipped that overrated tripe. Sempiternal Deathreign was probably the ORIGINAL death/doom band. This album came out a full two years before Autopsy's Mental Funeral, and one year before Winter's Into Darkness. Basically, it's really raw, ugly doom/death, influenced primarily by the likes of Hellhammer and Black Sabbath, as well as classic Teutonic thrash (Sodom, Kreator). And unlike the aforementioned Obituary, their solos AREN'T the only interesting thing about their music. There are some actually great riffs to be found in here. Songs range anywhere from 1:55 to 10:53, so there's plenty of variety here, as well.

Traumatic Voyage [GER] - Traumatic Voyage [1992]

This is just plain weird shit. I'm not even sure whether this can be classified as death metal, per-sé. There are a lot of progressive and psychedelic elements, the songs are abnormally long [averaging around 8 minutes], and there are occasional clean vocals as well. The closest thing to this that I can recall having heard prior was Timeghoul's demos, but those aren't exactly well-known, nor is a direct comparison fully accurate. You know what? Just check it out for yourself. There's a good chance you'll hate it, but it was definitely one of the more unique early extreme metal bands [use of past tense is misleading, since they're still around... and their more recent albums have gotten even weirder].

Chemical Breath [BEL] - Fatal Exposure [1992]

This one's a bit more mundane, but also has a lot more immediate appeal. Thrashy Belgian death metal, influenced by the likes of Sadus and early Pestilence, with a surprising amount of depth and technical prowess. These guys almost certainly would've been bigger if they'd come from Sweden or the U.S.
    See also: Values [1994]

Ghost [POL] - The Lost of Mercy [1994]

One of the earliest Polish death metal bands, and one of the few that doesn't owe its sound directly to Vader in one way or another. I actually came upon this record while looking through the chronological data on the 'brutal death metal' genre on RYM. This was one of the first dozen or so releases under that tag, and the only one I hadn't heard. Turns out, this doesn't really fit the description [as it's commonly used], since it doesn't sound like NYDM at all. Instead, what we have is a solid slab of European death metal that can most directly be compared to Iniquity's classic Serenadium, with thick, abrasive, and often sludgy riffs, and vocals reminiscent of Grave's Jörgen Sandstrom. More surprisingly, this album actually has stellar production - especially for something so obscure. And if you don't get a chuckle out of the very first riff on the record, you suck at metal.

Agony [CAN] - Apocalyptic Dawning [1994]

Canadian death metal tends to be awesome. This is no exception. It's brutal as shit. Clearly inspired by NYDM in a big way, but also surprisingly melodic. In that sense, it also resembles the aforementioned Serenadium. It's not the most original thing ever, but it's pretty damn solid.

    Morbius [USA] - Alienchrist [1995]

If that title sounds familiar to Arghoslent fans, it should. Drummer Matt Sylvester assumed the title as a pseudonym when he played in said band for several years. There are natural similarities between Morbius and Arghoslent, as well as fellow Virginians Deceased. But the closest parallels can be drawn to early Absu and The Chasm, with whom they share the distinction of being simultaneously raw and epic, with obscure melodies aplenty.
See also: The Shades Below [1992], Sojourns Through The Septiac [2005]

Scenery [CZE] - The Drowning Shadow Of Mankind [1997]

One word: Atheist. This is practically IDENTICAL to what Atheist might have put out between Unquestionable Presence and Elements. A lot of jazziness and unpredictable twists and turns. A few of the songs run a little bit long, and lack the punch that Atheist does, but for anyone wanting to get more from that same sound, you really couldn't do any better.
See also: Philosophy Of Ages [2002], Continuity [2006]

Cauldron Black Ram [AUS] - Skullduggery [2004]

This album sees members of Australian visionaries Portal and Stargazer returning to their roots, playing stripped-down, ugly, primitive death/thrash in the vein of Celtic Frost and Unleashed. Of course, it wouldn't be the same if they didn't let some of the progressive elements from their more well-known bands seep in, so expect some of that, too. Plus... their songs are about pirates, so there's awesomeness all around.

    Mitochondrion [CAN] - Archaeaeon [2008]

This is one of the more intriguing up-and-coming bands in extreme metal. They take the 'war metal' sound native to western Canada, pioneered by Blasphemy and infuse it with a heavy dose of progressive elements. Think of it as Axis of Advance meets Ved Buens Ende, with elements of Lykathea Aflame also included. The down-side is that the production is typical of the war metal sound, with drums and vocals being over-emphasized and guitars frequently buried.

Denial [MEX] - Catacombs Of The Grotesque [2009]

you remember that level in the original Quake, where the big red dude rises out of that pit of lava, and starts throwing hot rocks at you? That's what this album reminds me of. Insanely brutal Finnish-style death metal, played by Mexicans - including former members of Cenotaph and Shub Niggurath. These guys have a convincingly hellish, morbid sound with a sludgy [but well-defined] guitar tone, and manage to pull it off with virtually no palm muting. If you enjoy Convulse and Demilich, you definitely need to check out this record.

  • Disturbing is the plague of insect ideology

    Mai 13 2009, 4h26 por Hevroth

    Kvlt. Krieg. Trve. Grim.

If a band can't be described by any one of these adjectives, they have no reason existing.

Let it also be known that 'mainstream', 'popular', 'money', and 'successful' equals bad. Disgrace. Abomination. Such simplicity is the beauty of this flawless way of thinking.

As I ponder more on the idea, it becomes more and more apparent that the best thing we can do is hold this ideology as close to our mind and heart as we can. Great and brilliant is the architect behind such a mindset. With it, we can have the luxury of letting these rules and regulations govern our thoughts, opinions, and knowledge.

    Fantastic, isn't it?

A musician's ability to play music should be defined by how many fans he/she has. Good bands are defined by how unknown or underground they are. If a band is making a good amount of profit, they suck. They are a shit band and don't know anything about music. How aggressive a band's music is also determines their musical talent. Another fundamental law is that the earliest releases from a band's discography will always be their best ones. They are hallowed records and must be held above all else regardless of how inexperienced as musicians the band was starting out. Do not seek out a musician's ground work or procedure for music development when determining their competency - you can learn all of that just by looking at how popular they are.

Follow these rules, and ascend to the holy realm of insects.

  • The "art" of Raw Black Metal

    Mai 11 2009, 6h57 por Hevroth

What's this? People actually want to make their music sound like shit? Low audio quality is cool? Generally this is the idea behind Raw Black Metal.

Now, I'm all for cold atmosphere. I love a cold, dark feeling in my music, and raw black metal can usually deliver that. A common occurrence I see happening more often than it should is an abuse to this style in the frame of mind that because the audio quality is low and production cheap, it is easy to do this style. Now, if you simply lower the audio quality on the music you make normally, most of the time it's just going to sound like shit. That's what the lower audio quality is meant to do. You don't just make music and put it to a low quality setting and it "magically" turns your music into a colder, darker style. In my experience as a listener and fan of this style, the best Raw Black Metal atmosphere comes from music that is developed especially for this style, keeping in mind the feeling you want to achieve while writing the music, rather than hoping the low audio setting will achieve that for you. Yes, lower quality does make your music have a rougher, harsher sound. However without the sense of malice or darkness in mind when creating the music especially for this style, it's just going to sound like rough, harsh shit. Or horseshit.

I love listening to raw black metal, however one of my biggest gripes when shopping around for a new band to listen to is finding a band under this genre that does regular black metal and simply lowers the audio quality and by some incredible phenomenon it makes it raw black metal. Or so they hope. Oh well. I can appreciate the direction they're trying to head, but in my opinion it'd sound much better with music that sounds as if achieving the raw black metal sound was exclusively in mind during development.

So that's one rant. Another rant I have about raw black metal is the way that it sometimes seems to be used as a crutch. This correlates very well with my opinion on drum machines and other superficial development tools. I enjoy death metal also, and many bands (not just death metal) have drumming segments in their songs where it is obvious that no human is playing that. I can think of a song or two from one of my favorite bands, Iperyt, where the drumming is insanely fast, that it's very apparent that a drum machine or some other tool is behind it. I've seen videos where Behemoth plays live, and of course during their songs with fast blastbeats, you see Inferno there just banging on a drum here and there, obviously not responsible for the fast blastbeats. The aggressive element introduced in songs by this style is great, yes, but it does still take a little bit away from the enjoyment factor when you know that it's fake. Any 13-year old nerd can work software and program a computer. Usually a respectable amount of my enjoyment of music comes from the talent required to play it. So the artificial blastbeats sound awesome yes, but they do take away slightly from the enjoyment factor.

So what does any of that have to do with raw black metal? Well, the idea that they're utilizing a technology to alter the sound of their music that they would otherwise be unable to achieve. I'm not totally against that idea however. Of course I do appreciate the innovation factor and the different sounds people can make as they experiment with different tools. But on a fundamental level, it does slightly take away from my enjoyment factor when a band relies on a technology to produce a sound that they would not be able to produce themselves. And unless a vocalist's voice was seriously fucked up, and the instruments didn't work properly, (and even if that were the case), you wouldn't be able to replicate the sound of raw black metal. It relies on the technology (more specifically, the lack thereof), of reducing the audio quality to achieve the sound you want. With care taken during development, you can eventually produce a fantastic raw black metal atmosphere. It makes for a great listen, but of course there is still the fact that they would be unable to create that sound themselves, and thus relied on technical means to achieve it. It can sound good but it does also take away some of my enjoyment of the music somewhat.

    Just my two long cents.

  • Recommend me some damn music

    Abr 23 2009, 8h19 por Richardthegreat

So I'm going through one of those 'I can't find any decent music' stages in my life. I can't really say exactly what i'm looking for because i'm willing to give anything a shot. Have a look at my charts to see if you can get any inspiration from there.

I do however prefer male vocals either singing/growling/screaming though I also enjoy music that infuses female vocals on occasion, i'm a sucker for acoustic pieces in the vein of Agalloch.

Shit to be honest recommend me black metal, sludge, electronic, acoustic, hip hop whatever and i'll even be kind enough to tell you what I think of said band, i'll also give a pony to the winning recommendation. GO!

    Recommendations so far;

    Aarni
    Abigor (Nachthymnen)
    Acrid
    Aeon (Bleeding The False)
    Ars Diavoli (Pro nihilo esse)
    Bekhira
    Belenos (Errances oniriques)
    Bongzilla (Amerijuanican)
    Black Sheep Wall
    Children of Maani
    Clotted Symmetric Sexual Organ
    dälek
    Darkestrah
    Darkflight (Perfectly Calm)
