  • Typical Papa John's conversation

    Jan 22 2008, 10h03 por shinobi001

This is just a rough sketch of a conversation we had at Papa John's today. It isn't by any means exact. This is just usually how our conversations go. Thought you guys on last.fm would find this funny.

CALEB: (singing) "You are beautiful, in every single way. Words won't bring us down."
KEITH: You know Christina Aguilera didn't write that song.
    JACOB: Who did?
K: The woman that writes Pink's songs.
    J: No, she didn't. That's Christina's song.
K: No, someone else wrote the song.
    C: Who wrote what song?
J: The one you were singing.
K: Someone else wrote that song.
    C: Who did?
J: The woman that did Pink's songs. She's a famous songwriter.
    C: Umm ... Carole King?
    J: No. Not Carole King.
K: The woman that wrote it is a lesbian.
C: And it's not Carole King?
J: Carole King is not a lesbian! She had a solo career, or she was in a band. She's a popular songwriter. She used to have dreds like back in 2003 and now her hair is really short.
    C: kd lang?
    J: No.
K: I think it's that woman that did ... how does that song go? ... "I bet you think this song is about you."
C: OH .... her name starts with C-A-R
J: It's not Carole King! Carole King is not a lesbian!
C: No. Not Carole King! Ummm ... Carley Simon.
    K: Oh, that's right.
    C: Carley Simon's a lesbian?!
    K: Oh, she's a big ol' lesbian.
J: Oh ... Her name was ... Linda ... something.
    C: Linda McCartney?
J: Linda McCartney is not a lesbian!
C: Is it that woman from the 4 Non Blondes.
    J: I don't know.
C: Her name is Linda. She had dreds and a big hat. She wrote music for Bryan Adams.
J: What is her last name?
    C: I don't know. I don't think she had a solo career.
    J: Ok.
    C: ... Linda Ronstadt?
J: No, she's black. This woman was white.
K: Linda Ronstadt is not black.
    C: She's a country singer.
J: Well, who am I thinking of?
K: What is that? Is her name Dutch? Scandinavian?
    C: I think it's Norwegian.
    K: Who is that?
C: (singing) "I don't know much. But I know I love you." with Aaron Neville.
K: No, she's gay like Larry Bird, that guy from Phoenix.
J: Larry Bird is from Boston.
    K: No, he's not.
    J: Larry Bird.
    K: Yeah.
J: The coach for the Celtics.
    C: The Celtics.
    J: The Celtics.
    K: Larry ... Bird. Uh ... no ... I mean, Charles Barkley.
    C: Charles Barkley is gay?
K: Oh, he is so gay! He's so gay, he's a white man.
J: What about that guy ... Magic?
C: Magic Johnson is not gay! He has AIDS!
J: Oh, ok. ... What about that other guy? The Mailman?
    K: What is his name?
J: Hey, Justin, what is that basketball player's name for the Utah Jazz?
JUSTIN: Karl Malone. He retired at 43, surpassing Michael Jordan by one year, I think.
    J: Ok.
    C: It's not Carole King?
J: Carole King is not a lesbian!
C: And it's not Carly Simon?
    J: No. I think her name's Linda.
    C: Linda McCartney?
J: Linda McCartney is not a lesbian!
C: I think it's the woman from the 4 Non Blondes. All those boys looked pretty gay. I didn't know she was a lesbian. I think you're thinking of her. I don't know her last name, though.
    J: Linda ... Linda ... Linda ...
    C: Is it Stevie Nicks?
J: Stevie Nicks is not a lesbian. She had sex with that guy in Fleetwood Mac. What's his name?
    C: Mic Fleetwood.
    J: No, the other one.
    C: I don't know his name.
J: Justin, what was the name of the guy in Fleetwood Mac?
    C: ... who isn't Mic Fleetwood?
    J: He had a girl's name.
    JUSTIN: ... Leslie.
    JACOB: Leslie Buckingham!
    C: Lindsey Buckingham!
J: What was that other girl's name.
K: There was no other girl.
    J: Yes, there was.
C: Hutch might know. Let's ask him. ... Hutch, what was the name of the other girl in Fleetwood Mac?
HUTCH: There was no other girl.
J: Yes, there was. She sang backup vocals.
H: Well, everyone sings backup vocals.
J: She sang lead on those two songs.
    H: Well.
C: Do you know the 4 Non Blondes?
HUTCH: (singing) wake up in the mornin' and get real high ...
C: Yeah! Do you know the lead singer's name?
    H: ...
C: We know her first name is Linda. We just don't know her last name.
    H: Linda McCartney.

By the way, her name is Linda Perry. She was the lead singer of the 4 Non Blondes. She is a lesbian, and she wrote "Beautiful" for Christina Aguilera. She also wrote music for Pink, like "Let's Get This Party Started." She did not write anything for Bryan Adams.

Christine McVie was the other girl in Fleetwood Mac.

  • Streamable Track Gots - Jul 07

    Jul 28 2007, 14h05 por IanAR

Continuing from my Streamable Track Gots - Jun 07 article, here's my monthly installment of goodies, from my streamable track wants tag!

All tracks on Aaron Neville's My Greatest Gift have become streamable, bringing a couple of my favourites with them: TocarHercules and TocarTell It Like It Is.

I think, first heard Amy Winehouse's Rehab on Later...with Jools Holland, now it's streamable :)

Dropping the mood, for a couple of tracks: B.B. King's TocarThe Thrill Is Gone and Bruce Springsteen's TocarStreets of Philadelphia (sacrilegious to some, I'm sure, but one of the few of The Boss's tracks I like).

TocarSerrado is the track that first got me into Djavan, when it appeared in Gilles Peterson's Gilles Peterson in Brazil selection. The track's a luscious latin swing fest', the vocal gymnastics are amazing, yet so natural - Prepare to dance, this track's a joy!

Four Tet's She Moves She suffered from misassigned audio for a while - now proper stuff streams again :)

Heatwave's TocarBoogie Nights is amongst the first 100 tracks I bought - great, great, great to now have this to add to radios!

I first got to know John McLaughlin, as a boy, through my father's Mahavishnu Orchestra albums. Electric Guitarist is the only solo album, of his, that I own. This album deserves an article of it's own - a galaxy of jazz fusion/jazz rock stars session here - see Jazz-Rock-Fusion-Guitar.BlogSpot.com to get an idea. Jack Bruce's bass on TocarAre You The One? Are You The One? is characteristically outstanding and New York on My Mind is my favourite of the more traditional tracks.

Another two tracks that've returned from a streamability hiatus Ladytron's He Took Her to a Movie and Republica's Ready To Go.

Sarah Vaughan's TocarIn A Sentimental Mood is the first of two tracks, this month, contributing to the streamability of my Slushy Grooves - 1: DJ Scrawl 1992 PTT (a tag copy of a 1992 mixtape). Not my favourite recording, which's found on The Duke Ellington Songbook, Vol. 1, but excellent all the same.

The whole of The Faint's Danse Macabre Remixes album has become streamable :) Including the DJ's joy TocarThe Conductor (Thin White Duke remix) - this track rocks and's extremely easy to mix with!

I'd like to know more about TocarFor The Love Of Money, back in the early 80s there were so many covers of it, it's easy to assume this The O'Jays version is the original, but may be not.

I first came to know the song through Defunkt's TocarFor the Love of Moneycover, just listen to Kim Clarke slamming the bass on that one! IMO, Kim's one of the best female bass players the world's ever seen!

Van Morrison's TocarCrazy Love is another contributor to the Slushy Grooves mixtape tag.

Finally, Zap Mama's TocarTake Me Coco is another welcome return to streamability, after a few months away (and in mistagging land).

All of these are available, for you delight and delectation,
on my Formerly Streamable Track Wants Jul 07 PTT
or, more broadly, on my Formerly Streamable Track Wants 07.

Enjoy! - Ian :D Streamable Track Wants

  • Ericka Dunlap - African American Woman Country Singer

    Abr 20 2007, 17h03 por 2Serenity

In 2004, the United States crowed Miss Ericka Dunlap as Miss America. The woman is beautiful. Full of life and energetic.

At the time of the pageant, she was pursing her degree at the University of Central Florida. She aspired to be an attorney specializing in sports and entertainment.

    Source:

However, after her reign as Miss America her views changed because she is now pursuing a career as a country music singer!

    Check out her official website:

    Ericka Dunlap

    Personal opinion..

Ericka Dunlap is a beautiful person. Knowing that she is an African American woman like me, I am going to check out her music and explore the country genre a little bit more.

I definitely want to listen and hear more of the country music of the past.

Etta James to me was a country/blues and r&b singer who I adore so I know I will appreciate some country music.

Shawnia Twain, Dolly Parton and Willie Nelson, Charley Pride and Aaron Neville are the artists that I love and
    adore.

Did you know that the Pointer Sisters were considered to have a country single with the song, "Slow Hand"?

Check out their entry in Wikipedia on this fact.

  • Top 10

    Jan 5 2007, 16h03 por LKwesiJ

So, I've decided to also make a personal Top 10 list of 2006:

    10 - Bob Dylan - Modern Times
Is there anything new that I could potentially say about Mr Zimmermann? I doubt it, simply fact that the greatest American poet of the 20th century has produced a new album warrants a spot in the Top 10.

    9 - Dr John - Mercernary
Dr. John covering Johnny Mercer. Mac Rebennack has published typically New Orleans albums in the last couple of years and all of them are good. His voice coupled with the typical New Orleans piano and the brass in the back work every time.

8 - Van Morrison - Pay the Devil
Van the Man goes country. With three Hank Williams covers, the most American Irish ever shows just how far he has immersed himself in American music. Great Album.

    7 - Solomon Burke - Nashville
And another Soul crooner exploring the country route. Burke had already recorded the odd country tune before (and Southern Soul and Country have been perpetually close anyway). I would call this the best traditional Country album of the year and it definitely should have been up there in the Country charts (only made it to 55 though as modern country simply is too washed up and poppy nowadays).

6 - Aaron Neville - Bring it on home
I usually don't really like Aaron's solo work (the Neville Brothers' stuff is great), his voice is too soft and his material and back up to much geared for the Easy Listening market, but this one is simply amazing. The subtitle is The Soul Classics giving it the impression of a compilation, but Neville has decided to re-rerecord classics by Sam Cooke, The Stable Singers et al. I wish he would always sing like this.

    5 - Charlie Musselwhite - Delta Hardware
I hadn't really known this guy before, had him down as just another mediocre white Blues singer. In fact he is far better and this is easily the best blues album of the year. Nomen est omen, this is pure delta material, nothing extravagant, nothing fancy, no Fat Possum like electronic experiments. Just the good stuff.

4 - Neil Young - Living With War
As above my opinion of Neil Young hadn't been to high before (too experimental a folkie for me that dude) and I wonder how this album will sound in 10 years when all this furor about the current US-administration has quieted down. Yet, right now this is a great album, a running commentary on politics in the vain of Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie and the Almanac Singers, a blunt attack on the misuse of power by Bush and his cabinet set to rocky music.

3 - Jerry Lee Lewis - Last Man Standing
If I calculated an age average of the singers on this list here it would probably not bode too well for my standing for younger readers of my blog (meaning everyone), but what can I do, the music is just so much better. As most older legends do at some point Jerry Lee has recorded a duets album, these sometimes are quite sad affairs with older geniuses coupled with young pop guys in order to prop up sales delivering songs that suck. This is not the case here, not at all, most of the co-singers are older stars in their own right (Buddy Guy, Little Richard, Keith Richards...notable exceptions are Toby Keith and Kid Rock) and Jerry Lee dominates all of them. Wonderful Rock N Roll album.

2 - Bruce Springsteen - We Shall Overcome
Bruce Springsteen definitely is too much of a Classic Rock kind of guy for me. Decent and everything, just doesn't really work for me this Stadium Rock stuff. This is different. Covering Seeger songs (and thus again a political statement considering Seeger's well-documented left-wing history) Springsteen and band sound as if they just got together one saturday night at his house and recorded these songs for fun. You can hear how much fun they had playing this stuff, good ol'timin' stuff.

1 - Hank Williams III - Straight to Hell
And finally someone under 40 on this list. May I introduce the son of Hank Williams Jr, the grandson of Hank Williams himself. Can anyone think of a more pressing heritage as a singer? His third (studio) album of Country music and it is his best. Aggressive, hard-rocking Country that keeps the Outlaw tradition going. None of that soft, bland Nashville BS, neither the flag-waving Toby Keith kind. My only problem is that I can never decide whether I like the hard rockers or the slow crooning songs better. Get it!
