• Great Music Should Be Heard On Great Headphones ))))

Just received my new headphones the other day. Certain music should be appreciated on headphones. That is why I invested in a Beyerdynamic )))) DT770-PRO.

This is the 250 ohm version of the DT 770 Premium line, designed explicitly for use with dedicated stereo equipment such as home theater systems and headphone amplifiers. Conventional headphones with lower impedance ratings offer higher volumes at the same level of input, but need heavier drivers to compensate for low impedance or risk sounding muddy and distorted.

These cans are created more for a studio environment, however, this closed studio headphone is hand built in Germany and equalized to meet diffuse field EQ requirement — which means no enhanced sound "color" is added to my musical experience. I hear the music exactly how it is supposed to be heard, whilst within a closed, neutral sound stage. The sounds are extraordinary.

I complained last year about the over-accessibility of music and the lack of a clear musical direction in my life. Thankfully I had only the former to complain about this year and as far as complaints go, it’s an entirely self-inflicted one. z-soldier and I realized that we had a downloading addiction (52GB in 14 days; mediafire archives the new crack) and so this year we swapped downloading duties: when one of us was in charge of downloading, the other stayed `on the wagon’ so to speak; music would appear magically in our shared dropbox folder.

Two exciting new musical directions became visible to me this year. The first was a re-exploration of deep space synth and kraut sounds originally explored by the likes of Manuel Göttsching and Klaus Schulze with an occasionally noisy lo-fi aesthetic; with many of these artists releasing on tape-only labels. Unusually for me, the artists in this grouping are mostly American; they combine the Germanic inspiration with sounds from 80s American tv shows and the America of Blade Runner.

    1. This is a journal containing bands and albums I have recordings from on my computer. Though I try to support local music as best as I can by attending shows and buying albums, not all of this music I am in direct physical possession of through purchase.
    2. Not all of the bands below are directly from the KC/Lawrence area. Other cities and towns I keep in this collection are Topeka, KS, Columbia, MO, Wichita, KS, Warrensburg, MO, Manhattan, KS, and a few other, more rural areas of the region. Essentially, it contains everything east of and including Wichita in Kansas, and everything west of and including Columbia in Missouri.
    3. In addition to the previous point, you will notice that not all of the bands here are current residents of the region. Many bands (Mates of State, White Rabbits, etc.) unfortunately decided to move away to a larger metro area. Others (The Appleseed Cast, Namelessnumberheadman), were started in different regions and then relocated here at some point, usually early in their career. …

Les Discrets-Septembre Et Ses Dernières Pensées
Big Boi-Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son Of Chico Dusty
    Flying Lotus-Cosmogramma
High on Fire-Snakes for the Divine
    Foetus-Hide
    Janelle Monáe-ArchArachnoid
    Black Tambourine-S/T
Four Tet-There is Love in You
Deftones-Diamond Eyes Some will probably get on my back for this and say "A Nu Metal band? Really?" Well personally, I never thought that Deftones fit that description-they are too melodic for that label, as well as the fact that they have a great frontman and aren't afraid to experiment. In short, they don't suck. Anyways, this is a great album, with "Sextape", "Beauty School" and "976-EVIL" being highlights.
    Grinderman-Grinderman 2
    Mike Patton-Mondo Cane
    Envy-Recitation
The National-High Violet. Not quite the AOTY some have made it out to be, but on of the AOTY thus far to be sure.

  • August's Top 10

    http://www.fluid-radio.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/Famous-Places.jpg

It seems to get harder and harder each month to select our favourite ten releases. August was no exception to the rule and after much deliberation we finally made our choice with artists such as Goldmund, Noveller, Chris Abrahams and Aaron Martin making the grade…

    Goldmund – Famous Places

Keith Kenniff follows up 2008’s “The Malady of Elegance” with the third album under his Goldmund guise. Where Helios, his other key musical alias, takes on long form compositions which blend piano, guitar and electronics, Goldmund has always been about compact, concise piano music. On “Famous Places,” released this August on Western Vinyl, this is no different and may yet prove to be the best Goldmund album to date.

With fifteen beautifully crafted tracks, each around three minutes in duration, the deliberate capturing of piano pedals and hammers and captivating melodies all on display, the classic Goldmund sound is in full effect. …
