It didn't used to be this way.
George Gershwin didn't use
ACID to compose Rhapsody in Blue.
Paul Simon didn't use
Fruity Loops to write the melody to "Scarborough Fair." It is completely unnatural for music to be this way. So why are we letting this happen? Let's find out.
After searching through MP3.com, hearing many new artists, about 50% of the bands I hear, including rock bands, are obviously using free loop-based software to make (or rather, generate) their music. Many bands will have the guitars, but still, many won't. Some of the guitars, and even some of the vocals are FREE DOWNLOADED LOOPS. Just like
Rob Zombie's song "More Human than Human," except it's not more human, but less human, in fact, not human at all. Rather it is computer-generated, like
Toy Story, but without the computer animation, and without the celebrity voice actors.
I say that any artist that uses free internet programs to make beats, to generate melodies, to make visual effects, to make anagrams, is not really an artist. They are merely a
Tool of a lazy simple-minded Capitalist
America that demands mathematical perfection from every work of art. If it's not mathematically perfect, throw it out, it's worthless. Any mathematical loose-ends, or rather "naturalness," are too complicated for the average American.
I'm not completely against computers. I say that guitar effects are great. Where would rock be without
Tom Morello of
Rage Against the Machine and
Audioslave's sonic (and Tails lol jk) experimentation? We certainly wouldn't have
Incubus or
Linkin Park. However, free programs, are an insult to what Mr. Morello did for electronica music. If you've ever heard a Fruity Loops beat, you would know what I'm talking about. The quality is hideous. The only advantage to this software is that it's
free. Would you really sacrifice musical quality for freeness? Many artists have answered.
Postal Service says, "
Yes."
Also, any artist that types their lyrics or, actually, types
anything on
Word, or a similar word processing program, is not really an artist. Learn from me, I write all of my journal entries by hand. I use a quill dipped in ink to have the most natural experience possible, since pens are generated by corporations, but that's just a personal choice.
Was
Shakespeare's "Hamlet"
typed? Take a wild guess.
No. Computers suck out any spirituality and you are basically talking in code, not in English. The computer is telling you what to write, everything you write on your computer isn't from you. Phrases like WTF and LOL were not generated by humans, but by freeware anagram programs.
If music keeps going this way, soon
John Cage's dream will come true. All music will become completely indeterminant. There will be absolutely no choice in music whatsoever, everything will be controlled by computers. The result will be so horrible to the ears it will be unbarable, because everything will be done on free programs. Expect
Modem Noise: The Musical to win a Tony in 2018.
