  • 2009 - the year that was

    Dez 6 2009, 10h12 por xspeedxodysseyx

Each of my years seems to have a theme: that is, one genre of music seems to dominate over others. Ever since I dropped the whole mainstream music thing in 2004, every year has consisted of a primary musical interest, with everything else dragging the chain. 2004 was neo-classical. 2005, 2006 and 2007 were dominated by some form of film-score. And if 2008 was the year of ambient, then my 2009 has definitely been the year of indie / female vocalists.

Traditionally I have always favoured the softer, more soothing ( I guess..), voices that artists like Dido and Enya provide. Even during my mainstream days, I formed a fairly nichey taste for semi-respectable female singers (i.e Michelle Branch, Vanessa Carlton etc). But I guess 2009 saw me open my eyes to some of the lesser known, more alternative female voices that I had begun to dabble in during 2008.

First, the hot Summer was cooled by the mellow and fragile sounds of Au Revoir Simone. I stumbled on them in an interesting fashion - one of my friends sampled TocarA Violent Yet Flammable World in a skateboarding video. The music was almost revolutionary to me, and was so dramatic. It's actually quite different to the rest of the album, but I somehow managed to get into their music.

Shortly after mastering The Bird Of Music, I found out they had released a new album. Eager to test it out, I was instantly drawn to Another Likely Story - again such a dramatic and powerful song. Overall i'd have to say that this was by far my favourite track for the year, and definitely among my favourite tracks of all time.

Moving into the chill of winter, the warm, playful and heartfelt songs of A Fine Frenzy dominated the rest of the year. I was astounded that whatever song I had on, I loved it. Even now, I can play any of her songs (except maybe Fever..) and have that great feeling of suspended reality pass over me. Initially TocarRangers was my favourite track, but this has now been eclipsed by TocarElements, the best three and a half minutes I could ever think to spend.

While these two were my main artists for the year, the new album from Natalie Imbruglia, and discovering old albums from Vanessa Carlton, Dido and others, meant that 2009 really was the year of the female.

    Now for 2010...

  • Best of 2009

    Dez 4 2009, 2h08 por runwithvampires

My most listened to this year mixed with, imo, the best albums...

    1. Taylor Swift - Fearless (even though it was released in 2008, Taylor became ridiculously popular in 2009)
    Listen: TocarUntouchable

    2. Paramore - Brand New Eyes (It was always going to be on the list)
    Listen: TocarBrick By Boring Brick

    3. Kate Voegele - A Fine Mess
    Listen: Tocar99 Times

    4. The Rocket Summer - Do You Feel EP (Island are idiots who wouldn't recognise a good artist if they played outside their bedroom window. We should've gotten Bryce's upcoming album months ago)
    Listen: TocarYou Gotta Believe

    5. A Fine Frenzy - Bomb In A Birdcage (In my opinion, BIABC is not as good as One Cell In The Sea but AFF will always be an amazing artist. Oh Blue Christmas is also really pretty)
    Listen: TocarStood Up

    6. Demi Lovato - Here We Go Again (Ngl, I was not a 'fan' before this album. I think it shows she does have talent)
    Listen: World Of Chances

    7. Meg & Dia - Here, Here and Here (Amazing second album. I was impressed)
Listen: Are There Giants Too, In The Dance?

    8. Carrie Underwood - Play On
    Listen: TocarChange

    9. VersaEmerge - VersaEmerge EP
    Listen: The Hider

    10. Marié Digby - Breathing Underwater (Extremely poppy, but very catchy).
    Listen: TocarLove With A Stranger

    11. Gloriana - Gloriana
    Listen: TocarWild At Heart

First, make a list of your top-20 artists overall. Then, for each of these artists, add the 8 most similar artists to your list. Delete any duplicates, count up the number of entries on your list and this will give you some idea of how eclectic your listening habits are. A score of 9 represents an extremely unvaried musical taste while a 160 represents an extremely varied one.

Interesting... I was expecting to eliminate more of these because of my fondness for hard alternative rock and Christian rock (despite the fact that I'm an atheist). Most people I know don't listen to video game soundtracks and classical music as often as I do, which may be what saved me. I love me some good ol' Gustav Holst. ;)

    32. Is there a song by 44 that makes you happy? (Watchout! There's Ghosts)
[track artist=Watchout! There's Ghosts]Remember Me, Oh God, for Good[/track]. It's the perfect love song for that genre.

    33. What is you favorite album by 12? (Snow Patrol)
Final Straw, by far. They've never made music that good again since, though I don't mind A Hundred Million Suns.

    34. What is the worst song by 45? (Kate Nash)
Oh, her? But I love all of her songssss! ):
Well, [track artist=Kate Nash]Birds[/track] is the closest to "sucky" that I would describe a song by her as.

    35. What was the first song you ever heard by 34? (Muse)
[track artist=Muse]Supermassive Black Hole[/track], probably. DON'T THINK BADLY OF ME. I listened to Muse before the whole Twilight movie explosion.
...though I was browsing Stephanie Meyer's playlist when I discovered she listened to Muse.
    OH, SHUT UP.

    36. What is your favorite album by 48? (The Killers)
Hot Fuss is the only one I've listened to all of the way through, and it's pretty nice.

    37. How many times have you seen 42 live? (Jack Off Jill)
Very funny. I could barely add when they broke up.

    38. What is your favorite song by 36? (The All-American Rejects)
    [track artist=The All-American Rejects]Fallin' Apart[/track].

    39. What was the first song you ever heard by 28? (Lights)
    [track artist=Lights]Ice[/track], probably.

    40. What is your favorite album by 7? (Franz Ferdinand)
I'm feeling Tonight lately. Especially [track artist=Franz Ferdinand]What She Came For[/track] and [track artist=Franz Ferdinand]Dream Again[/track], along with their remixes on Blood.

    41. Is there a song by 41 that makes you happy? (Little Boots)
[track artist=Little Boots]Remedy[/track] is really uplifting. [track artist=Little Boots]Not Now[/track] also has a really pounding beat that gets me going.

    42. What is your favorite album by 31? (blink-182)
Haven't really listened to any of their albums in full. I'm waiting for the new one to really dive in.
Most of the songs that I like on their Greatest Hits come from blink-182, though.

    43. What is your favorite song by 24? (Paramore)
I hate this question. [track artist=Paramore]Where the Lines Overlap[/track]?

    44. What is a good memory you have involving 46? (Shiny Toy Guns)
Ooh, this kid at a party had We Are Pilots. He was really cool.

    45. What is your favorite song by 35? (Say Anything)
    [track artist=Say Anything]Crush'd[/track] is cute.
[track artist=Say Anything]Alive with the Glory of Love[/track] reins supreme, though.

    46. Is there a song by 9 that makes you happy? (Imogen Heap)
[track artist=Imogen Heap]Earth[/track] is really nice. [track artist=Imogen Heap]Loose Ends[/track] puts a smile on my face, too.
All of her music makes me happy. Not in the music-is-joyful way, either. Listening to it makes me feel happy.

    47. What is your favorite album by 4? (Coldplay)
Tough tie between A Rush Of Blood To The Head and X&Y.

    48. Who is a favorite member of 37? (PlayRadioPlay)
Dan Hunter's the only one there, eh?
OMG NEW ALBUMS IN JANUARY 2010 OMGGGGGG AAAAAAAAAH FANGIRL SCREAM OVER 50 SONGS AAAAAAAAAH
His music makes me so happy! (:

    49. What is the first song you ever heard by 43? (Watchout! There's Ghosts)
[track artist=Watchout! There's Ghosts]I'll Take Famous Murders for 500[/track]? I listen to albums in their tracklist order. :P

    50. How many albums do you own by 20? (Mazzy Star)
Two. She Hangs Brightly and So Tonight That I Might See

I'll do another in 6 months. Yay(:
I spent like, 2 hours doing this. Ah, the joys of not going shopping on Black Friday, instead listening to Christmas music and Michael Jackson specials on TV Guide Network.
Some of the track BBcode isn't showing up in the preview, and it's making me nervous. Lol. Yay.

  • A Fine Frenzy with Landon Pigg and Among the Oak & Ash

    Nov 25 2009, 8h08 por manboobies

    Wed 18 Nov – A Fine Frenzy

What an all around great, great show. First of all--good venue, good crowd--it wasn't outrageously packed and though Irene and I showed up about a half hour after doors opened, we managed to get fairly close to the stage without shoving people out of the way.

Among the Oak & Ash was a pleasant surprise! Their sound is a blend of folk and country, or something--whatever the blend is, it is unique and something I've never heard before. They were energetic, alive, and fun to see. They also had a crazy talented friend playing some intense acoustic... I don't even know what to call the instruments he used. But they were great, all around, and refreshing. Bands like these are what music ought to be about--singing about everything, doing all, and just living it up through music.

I love Landon Pigg and so I thought he was adorable (sooo cute in real life!--never realized that before--and with his hair? HE TOTALLY LOOKS LIKE GASPARD ULLIEL) and fun. I'm not sure if opening with "TocarFalling In Love At A Coffee Shop" was the most brilliant move to make because most of the crowd probably was only familiar with that song--but his performance was good. He was funny and charming in a laidback kind of way, and there are no complaints about him! Girls will be screaming girls; I totally admit to squealing and screaming, too!

But most importantly--A Fine Frenzy. I've loved A Fine Frenzy ever since discovering them via VH1 (used to watch the morning music videos religiously) as a You Oughtta Know artist. I fell in love with "TocarAlmost Lover" and upon seeing "One Cell In The Sea" soon afterward, without caring and listening to the other tracks--I bought the deluxe edition and... fell in love. To this day I am constantly rediscovering things about "One Cell in the Sea" and it is just... wonderful and marvelous. While some people who are so... blinded by their love for "One Cell in the Sea" immensely dislike "Bomb In A Birdcage"--I am an enormous fan. I loooove "Bomb in a Birdcage", Alison Sudol's music evolving, though keeping her roots within.

In short, I didn't really care about how they performed as long as she sang one of the songs I really wanted to hear (considering the fact that I love all of her songs, this is not a difficult feat to accomplish). But I am so glad that they were my first real live performance concert!! (The Jonas Brothers and Demi Lovato... do not count.) Alison Sudol--I WANT TO BE HER NEW BEST FRIEND. She is beautiful, her voice is stunning live, her energy is infectious!, she is so cheerful, so happy, so alive, so enthralled with the concept that the crowd was there for her, so--as if she can't believe that people love her and her music so much! She is humble and charming and funny and witty, clever and unpretentious and absolutely one of the coolest people I don't really know.

She's clearly an incredible musician, which earns her tons of points from me, the ever pretentious lover of old, old jazz and classical music. Her songs are sung with the most incredible emotion and she is just--there is no real way to express how great and fantastic it was to see her live and she has just now set the bar so high!--there is no way to explain it; only a person who has seen her live could understand. One could possibly glean what I am trying to say through watching a video of her performing live, but--seeing her live is just INCREDIBLE.

It wasn't of course just Alison--her bandmates are the ones who create the music with her and they gel together beautifully. The chemistry, the interaction between all of them--it is lovely. But Alison is the one to be most credited with being electrifying to watch--she gets so immersed in the music, tears at all heart strings, dances in the most adorable way, and... she is just incredible!! Seriously, I want to be her best friend!

The music itself was incredible. Just for the record. Her music is always incredible, live or not. But seeing her perform live is simply--I REMAIN IN AWE.

BASICALLY--the greatest live musical experience I've ever had. Granted other than the JoBros I've only been to choral and orchestra and band performances, but... they're in different categories, so. IT WAS BEAUTIFUL AND AWESOME AND I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE HER LIVE AGAIN!
