  • I've got Pride in my Vinyl Records

    Nov 25 2009, 23h36 por RiotGrrrlCS

    :D

I can make a Pride flag out of vinyl records :) And the fact that all the records in the photo are queercore makes it all the more perfect.

    From left to right:

Pansy Division - Valentine's Day (red)
    Team Dresch - It's A Conversation (orange)
God Is My Co-Pilot - Gender Is As Gender Does (yellow)
    Tribe 8 - Bitch (green)
God Is My Co-Pilot- On a Wing & a Prayer (blue)
Subtonix - Into The Fire (purple)

Because I do literally have pride in my queercore vinyl records, here goes:

Aren't they beautiful? :) From left to right:

    Bikini Kill - New Radio
God Is My Co-Pilot- Gender Is As Gender Does (female cover, clear yellow)
God Is My Co-Pilot- Gender Is As Gender Does (male cover, clear yellow)
    God Is My Co-Pilot - On A Wing & A Prayer (blue)
Pansy Division - Valentine's Day (red)
Pansy Division - Queer To The Core
Pansy Division - For Those About To Suck Cock (clear)
Subtonix - Into The Fire (purple)
    Team Dresch - It's A Conversation (orange)
    Team Dresch - Hand Grenade
    Tribe 8 - Allen's Mom
Tribe 8 - Pig Bitch (green)
V/A - Stop Homophobia (with Fag Bash, Black Angel's Death Song, Pansy Division, Happy Flowers)
V/A - There's a Dyke in the Pit (with Bikini Kill, Tribe 8, Lucy Stoners, 7 Year Bitch)
V/A - There's a Faggot In The Pit (with Glee Club, Goodgrief, Filth, Up To Here, All You Can Eat)

And speaking of vinyl and queer bands I've just arrived at the conclusion that about 10% of the bands in my vinyl records collection have out LGBT band members in them. Which is funny because it's consistent with the "1 person in every 10 people is either lesbian, gay or bisexual" statistic. So in my case I can say that about 1 vinyl record in every 10 vinyl records in my collection is by a band with out LGBT members in them, lolol.

So just to name a few...

Again...aren't they beautiful? :) From left to right:

Communards - Don't Leave Me This Way
CSS - TocarLet's Make Love And Listen To Death From Above (red square-shaped vinyl)
CocoRosie - God Has a Voice, She Speaks Through Me (picture disc)
Dead or Alive - TocarYou Spin Me Round (Like A Record)
    Erasure - Sometimes
Frankie Goes to Hollywood - TocarRelax
The Gossip - TocarListen Up! (picture disc)
Hercules and Love Affair - TocarYou Belong (blue vinyl)
    Kajagoogoo - TocarHang on Now
    Klaus Nomi - TocarNomi song
Pet Shop Boys - I'm With Stupid
    Soft Cell - TocarTainted Love
    Le Tigre - TKO
The Hidden Cameras - Ban Marriage (clear with red and blue splatter vinyl)
Thompson Twins - Lay Your Hands (diamond-shaped picture disc)

And....my ultimate all-time favorite gay LP:

Bronski Beat - The Age of Consent

It actually has the legal ages of consent for homosexual relationships between men in european countries (in 1984) listed on the inner sleeve, pretty cool:

And props to Peter Saville for designing this 12" single cover:

Visage - TocarThe Damned Don't Cry

I love the band, I love the song, and I love the cover. I've read the lead singer of Visage, Steve Strange, is openly gay. Even if it's not true it deserves a mention here just for the fact that the record cover photo is so lesbian-ish, lol.

And last but definitely not least...my all-time favorite lesbian LP (not so much because of the album cover, more due to my undying love for coloured vinyl, even more when it comes with cool extras! And the band itself is really good)

Lesbians on Ecstasy - Giggles in the Dark (with extra zine)

  • Slaughter of Mia

    Jul 7 2009, 20h15 por birdf

Today 16 years ago Mia Zapata, a singer for Seattle punk rock band The Gits, was murdered.

Zapata had spent the night before her death drinking. Around 1:00 a.m., she left the Comet Tavern bar in the Capitol Hill area of Seattle. She went down the street to the apartment of a friend. She left around 2:00 a.m., telling her she was going home. This was the last she was seen alive. She may have walked a few blocks West to get a cab, North to a friend's apartment, or decided to walk home.

It is believed she encountered her murderer shortly after 2:15 am. Since the barkeep remembered her wearing her headset as she left, it is believed she was listening to music from her walkman and thus was unaware of the approaching danger.

Her body was found less than two hours later by a streetwalker in what was then a dead-end street in a part of the Central Area that was busy with drug buys and prostitution. The streetwalker, who went by the name of "Charity," told police that Zapata's body had been positioned in the form of a cross, with her ankles crossed and her arms stretched outward, perpendicular to her body. She had been strangled with the drawstrings of her sweat shirt, which bore the name of her band, The Gits.

Zapata was 27 when she died, the fiery lead singer and lyricist for an up-and-coming punk band, The Gits, a local favorite with a cult following in Seattle during a time when the city's "grunge" scene was all the vogue in the rock-music industry. Her slaying was felt by some local musicians as the pop of a balloon, the end of a delusional period of optimism. That the investigation stalled frustrated many in her circle.

After the initial shock of Zapata's murder, both the remaining members of the Gits and the Seattle musical community at large began an intensive investigation into her death. Using funds generated by the Seattle music community (from benefit shows and CDs), as well as their own money, the remaining band members hired private investigator Leigh Hearon to supplement the police department's investigation. For over three years, Hearon and the Seattle Police Department investigated the crime with little or no breaks in the case. In 1996 the investigation first gained national attention in an episode of Unsolved Mysteries, it however did not open any new leads. The case was later highlighted on several other TV shows including A&E's American Justice, Cold Case Files, City Confidential, CBS's 48 Hours and FOX's America's Most Wanted.

Seven years passed with few new leads in the case, until a random DNA check conducted by the Seattle PD's Cold Case Unit and the Washington State Crime Lab led to the arrest of Cuban-American fisherman Jesus Mezquia. Mezquia, who briefly lived in Seattle during the time of Zapata's murder, was linked to the crime in 2003 when a DNA profile was extracted from a saliva sample left on Zapata's body; Mezquia had bitten her breast. It had been kept in cold storage until the STR technology was developed for full extraction. An original entry in 2001 failed to generate a positive result, but Mezquia's DNA entered the national databank after he was arrested for burglary in Florida in 2002.

On March 25, 2004, a jury convicted Mezquia of Zapata's murder and sentenced him to 36 years in prison, the maximum allowed in the case under Washington state law.

(this is my favorite Gits' song)

I haven't watched this movie yet... what a shame. I should definitely do it.

Mia Zapata was an incredible singer. She just totally sang her heart out. Her voice brings tears to my eyes and just kinda rips my soul. Her songs are amazingly emotional and powerful. Yeah, I know all these things sound so banal... but I just can't find the words.

The unrecognized and underrated Queen of Punk Rock,

    Mia Katherine Zapata...

    rest in peace. :)

  • Top Ten - Protest Songs

    Fev 3 2009, 1h58 por Lolicat

Because protest songs are some of the best songs out there, and it's always important to unite people against unjustice, which these tracks aim to do!

    10. M.I.A., TocarPaper Planes
Just to prove that protest songs aren't dead and gone! This is one of M.I.A.'s best tracks, although she's kidding herself if she thinks she's underground (she expressed disappointment that the songs was so popular because she liked the 'underground cred').
The song itself is about racial stereotyping, and how Arabic people's are viewed in the West, feared even though after a day in a low paying job like driving a taxi, they're too crushed to care about terrorism, and just want left alone. The gunshots and cash registers obviously reference the money made by certain Americans during the Iraq war.

    9. Bob Dylan, Blowin' in the Wind
Usually this ends up near the top of lists like this, but I'm not a great fan of Dylan's performance of the song. Still, it is an essential protest song, asking how far we must go before enough is enough. Rather depressing, to be honest, made worse by the truth of the situation.

    8. Aus Rotten, Tuesday, May 18, 1993
The date is the day upon which the vocalist of the band found out about atrocities carried out in Bosnia, the song draws parallels to the Nazi Holocaust, and asks why we let such a thing continue. A follow-up, Two Years And One Song Later explores the subject more blatantly, referencing the actual events of a war that much of the West choose to ignore. Perhaps Crust punk was not the best medium for gaining attention, but at least the band were doing something.

    7. Bruce Springsteen, Born in the USA
Although it has often been co-opted by patriots, Springsteen's song is anything but patriotic, criticising the government for the Vietnam war and its subsequent treatment of the soldiers unfairly drafted to fight in it. One wonders what the sun-burnt mullet-wearing rednecks would think if they actually listened to the lyrics?

    6. Kanye West, TocarDiamonds From Sierra Leone
Shocked? I was too when i first heard the track. Yet, Kanye rather openly lays into the whole 'bling' culture surrounding Hip Hop and the fact of blood diamonds. The sampling of Shirley Bassey's classic track TocarDiamonds Are Forever makes the song more instantly recognisable while at the same time forcing the listener to realise the damage done by the trade. As far as I remember, the remix version is slightly more politicised.

    5. 7 Year Bitch, TocarM.I.A.
Mentioned in a previous post, this song is also a protest against the sloth and ignorance of the system in regards to rape cases. Given that so few rape cases result in a conviction and that so few women are given support following the crime (male preconception 'they were asking for it dressed like that'), this is an important if ignored song.

    4. Public Enemy, Tocar911 Is A Joke
Based around the slower response times when a 911 call comes from a poor or racial minority area, Chuck D's accusatory lyrics are sadly true. It was hard to pick a Public Enemy song, as so many are protest songs, but I felt that, because this one has a direct factual basis rather than attacking injustice in general that it should be up here.

    3. The Cranberries, TocarZombie
A rather personal one, I choose this because to me it covers the Troubles in Ireland so much better than anything U2 have ever done. It describes exactly the attitudes of the sorts of people that perpetuate the war on both sides, 'zombie'. having spoken to these people and seeing the conflict go on needlessly, this is very personal for me.

    2. Nena, Tocar99 Red Balloons
Ultimate anti-nuclear war song? Perhaps. A catchy New Wave track was the perfect vehicle for Nena and co. to express anger at the nuclear stockpiles both superpowers were sitting on (with the UK developing Trident), mocking the stupidity of the governments with the premise that anything unexpected might spark off a destructive war, even some red balloons set off over the Berlin wall. Just as important today!!!

    1. John Lennon, TocarGive Peace a Chance
Number one because it says all that needs to be said! There's nothing complex, the niceties do not need gone into, the lyrics do not need to chart everything bad that man has ever done. Rather, we should just shut up and give peace a chance for once, and see how we do without relying on '-isms'.

  • Top Ten - Love Songs

    Fev 1 2009, 18h13 por Lolicat

Love songs are really a dying breed. Most popular songs I hear now seem to be about the chase or one night stands. That said, many older love songs have the performer displaying a stalker-like tenacity, even after the object of their affections has left. With that in mind, I've tried to pick songs I thought descriptive of love... without being creepy. As before, these are in no real order, just some of my favourites.

    1. Iron & Wine, Upwards over the mountain
As was pointed out in the wonderful anti-novel A Year in the Life of themanwhofellasleep, there should be fewer songs about swinging lovers and more about sticking mothers. This song is tender, unaffected and totally deserving of being remembered as a great love song.

    2. Patti Smith, TocarBecause the Night
Ok, so I it's basically about a one night stand, but it's passionate, and loving, not just some dance track about sleeping with someone and the feeling like another shag the morning after. Maybe not Patti's best, but the reason I will forgive Springsteen anything, for co-writing it.

    3. Team Dresch, TocarDon't Try Suicide
A quieter moment on their Captain, My Captain, it stands out amongst the soaring feedback and is one of my favourite tracks by the band. Essentially, the love element is to do with the girlfriend of the protagonist holding her when she's upset, and the power of having someone close to you. I'm not sure on the actual context, but given the rest of the band's output, I'm assuming it's based on a personal experience. Also brilliant: TocarUncle Phranc, a song about love for an adopted uncle/aunt figure.

    4. 7 Year Bitch, TocarM.I.A.
Ok, this one is sort of scary, but not in a stalker way. In fact, basically the opposite. M.I.A. is an angry, reactionary song written about the rape and murder of Mia Zapata of the Gits, a close friend of the band members. The song urges vigilante justice against the criminal responsible, which I would rather view as an angry expression of thwarted love for their friend than an actual call to arms. Then again, these guys did write TocarDead Men Don't Rape too.

    5. Björk, Hyperballad
The protagonist of this song is a (presumably) depressed woman who each morning throws smal objects from the top of the mountain where she lives with her lover, imagining they are her, so that she can be happy when she is with him. All very metaphorical, of course, but it is a beautiful story in itself, and a perfect description of love and what people will do for it, or what it does to them.

    6. Ani DiFranco, Untouchable Face
Ok, I know I said I hated the stalker vibe in most songs, but this can almost be seen as a parody or rejection of that role. Rather than pining for an ex-lover, DiFranco's song contains admission that their new beau is perfect with them, and that they are forever. Against this are her frustrations, 'I prefer the worst of you, too bad you had to have a better half', 'fuck you'.

    7. Cat Stevens, TocarFather And Son
Forget the version with Ronan Keating, this song is a wonderfully touching duet (or perhaps duel). Proof that really great love songs are not just for girls, it skirts away from the Oedipal man-hugging of most father-son relationships to have a death-bed sentimentality that stop short of being saccharine.

    8. Moldy Peaches, Anybody Else but You
Ok, maybe it's a little twee, but I adore it anyway, and it's the perfect upbeat play on love and friendship. It's a song for people in love that actually like each other as well, and I think that gives it a spot on this list. Another less cheery love song by Moldy Peaches, Nothing Came Out is about unrequited love, but worth a listen for the bad hair metal ballad solo it manages to incorporate, and the fact it's teenage love packaged exactly.

    9. Regina Spektor, TocarSamson
The reclaimation of love from the epic and needless passion of the archetypal stories, this song sees Samson and Delilah living happily together after she cuts his hair, accepting a place as a normal human and being in love rather than becoming a Biblical character or a hero. This is the ultimate triumph of true love, of longevity over passion.

    10. Cat Power, Aretha, Sing One for Me
I prefer Power's cover version of this song, a great tune about the power of music to move our hearts. A lover begs Aretha Franklin to sing a song that'll put her partner in a concillatory mood after they storm off to a one of her concerts following an argument. This song is as much about love of music to me as it is about love itself.

    Bonus!

    11. Crass, Our Wedding
A pastiche of the typical radio love song, Crass released this on a limited edition disc. Part of their Penis Envy album it is really an attack on the female role in relationships, seen on the album as limiting, humiliating and sub-servient. The song itself is awful, but hilarious in context.

    Bonus Bonus!

    12. Cat Power, Sea of Love
Because I want someone to sing it to me :(

    Entry for April 07, 2008
Good morning world! What a beautiful day today would be if it wen't for all the negativity around me. It's all good though, i'm starting to learn how not to let others affect me. Honestly i'm not sure how well it's working, but hey you gotta give me at least a little credit for trying. RIGHT?

Anywho; Works starting to get alot better. I've been trying to get to know the people i work with better, Which is hard for me because i don't like talking to people that i don't really know. I'm one of those girls who just don't really think about what they say, and it gets me in trouble sometimes. And trouble's what i'm trying to avoid....hmm doesn't really make sense does it? i'm not sure maybe it does. lol

So i've been thinking about school alot lately. I feel like an idiot fo not finishing school. AND NOW i didn't go sign up for the GED test this last saturday, and it's going to take me longer to finish that. God i feek like such a damn looser! I also want to start taking some kind of class...massage therapy, recording, fuck man ANYTHING! Anything but nothing. I just feel so determined to finish something now. Everything i've ever picked up i lost intrest in, and i move onto something else, but then i do the same thing all over again. haha isn't reality fun you guys??

  • Female Rock Compilation - I Need Your Help

    Fev 17 2008, 3h05 por Zer0_II

I'm working on putting together an all female rock compilation, with the theme obviously being female fronted rock bands. It will be the first in a series that I'm working on simply titled "Digital Meltd0wn Presents:"; not very exciting, I know, but the music, liner notes, and album art will make up for it. Some of the artists/bands I am considering featuring are:

Babes in Toyland, The Runaways, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, PJ Harvey, Jack Off Jill,The Donnas, Veruca Salt, Daisy Chainsaw, Queen Adreena, Kittie, Betty X, The Avengers, HorrorPops, Lydia Lunch, Bitch Alert, Velcra, Roxy Saint, The Gits, Sahara Hotnights, Sexpod, Fluffy, The Soviettes, My Ruin, Bikini Kill, 7 Year Bitch, The Distillers, L7, The Kills, Devotchkas, Bif Naked, Rasputina, Penetration, The Slits, Pain Teens, Lunachicks, Sleater-Kinney

Now I could use your help. I know you wonderful people are aware of some hard rocking chicks that aren't on this list, so please let me know of any artists, bands, or particular songs (preferably NOT mainstream), that you think should be included on this list by leaving a comment. I'm also trying to think of a good name for the compilation, so if you have any ideas please comment. If you're interested in getting a copy of this compilation once it is finished, please send me a private message.

Edit: Wow! I've recieved a ton of recommendations. Thank you for all the suggestions. I believe I have more than enough recommendations to put together an amazing compilation. I almost feel obligated to make an anthology of sorts. I haven't had a chance to sort through very many of the recommendations yet, but some of the bands I have been able to check out are absolutely fantastic, and I can't thank the contributors enough for introducing me to such fantastic music. I thought I would share those recommendations with you all. I recieved these from neowin, last.fm, and my blog visitors. Here you go:
