Having outgrown the Capacity of telecom companies to provide bandwidth for its online applications and services, Google is buying part of an undersea cable to carry DatA to and from Asia.

On Tuesday, Google said it would join with five other telecom companies -- Bharti Airtel, Global Transit, KDDI, Pacnet, and Singtel -- to invest $300 million in the of a 10,000 km submarine cable.

The high-speed fiber optic trans-Pacific cable, called Unity, will have a capacity of up to 7.68 Tbps and will run between the United States and Japan, about 6,200 Miles. It is planned to accommodate Demand for trans-Pacific bandwidth, which has grown at a rate of 63.7% annually between 2002 and 2007 and is expected to double biannually from 2008 through 2013, according to TeleGeography, a telecommunications consultancy.

When construction of Unity is complete in 2010, Google projects a 20% increase in the amount of available trans-Pacific bandwidth. NEC and Tyco Telecommunications will be handling the Construction.

What Google gets is bandwidth at cost, said Stephan Beckert, director of research for TeleGeography, in an E-MAIL. google, along with , is one of the few companies that have opted to purchase and light long-haul Dark fiber, he said. It is the first non-telecom company to take an active role in Submarine cable ownership.

"They are a huge user of bandwidth, particularly since their acquisition of YouTube, and have been very aggressive in their efforts to minimize their bandwidth costs," said Beckert. of trans-Pacific BANDWiDTH is than Trans-Atlantic bandwidth, according to TeleGeography.

Viewed through the lens of its interest in mobile advertising and phones, not to mention its participation in the Fcc's recent spectrum auction, 's previous investments in "" -- unlit fiber optic cable -- have fueled speculation that the company aspires to become a network operator like AT&T or Comcast.

But Google's network acquisitions manager Francois Sterin, in a blog post, denies any such ambition. "If you're wondering whether we're going into the Undersea , ," he wrote. "We're not competing with Telecom providers, but the Volume of data we need to move around the world has grown to the point where in some cases we've exceeded the ability traditional players can offer. Our Partnership with these companies is just another step in ensuring that we're Delivering the best possible experience to people Around the World."

There are Three Additional Submarine cables planned: The Trans-Pacific Express Cable System should be lit in August of this year, adding network capacity between the U.S. and China, the Republic of Korea, and Taiwan. , planned to enter service in the first quarter of 2009, will Connect the U.S. and several Southern Asian countries. And the third cable is being planned by Reliance FLAG, formerly Flag Telecom.

TeleGeography says that when all these new cables Go Live, between the U.S. and the will double and that the combined planned and Current bandwidth across the Pacific now exceeds potential bandwidth capacity ACROSS the Atlantic.

Even so, all this won't be enough. "You should also Bear in mind that this cable is a single span of Fiber across the Pacific," said Beckert. "It's not a Network, and it's not a Complete solution to 's trans-Pacific capacity requirements. They will have to capacity on the Increasingly Diverse Array of trans-Pac cables to ensure that they have Redundant . However, investing in their own Cable means that they won't have to purchase as much Capacity on other cables."

And given that Five Undersea Cables were cut in late January and early February, some redundancy might be a Good Idea.
  • DON't bother reading.

Blah. I dunno what else I can do to get into my blog writing spirits. So here goes nothing.
Warned ya not to bother. But since you're here...

    1. How did you get into 29? (The Rolling Stones)
One of my favourite artists (although, to be honest, sometimes I don't like Mick Jagger's vocals) from the nostalgic era when the common people and teenagers had good taste in music. Pity to never be able to live in such times and never getting a chance to experience them live.

    2. What was the first song you ever heard by 22? (Arctic Monkeys)
I Bet You Look Good On The Dance Floor, like almost everyone else. But it was Fake Tales of San Francisco that made me decide to check them out. Very very glad I did.

    3. What’s your favorite song by 14? (Pink Floyd)
Aaaa, that's a hard one! Can I just say Dark Side Of The Moon(the album)? Every song on it flows onto the next, so it is like one big long song! When I first heard it it totally blew me away. Sublime. As for individual songs, I'd have to say Speak To Me/Breathe. The other ones I like are Money and Another Brick In The Wall. Yes, I know. Very cliched.

    4. What is your favorite album by 16? (Norah Jone)
Easily the first album, Come Away With Me. I haven't listened to much stuff from the later albums but I like Norah's works quite a lot.

    5. How many albums by 13 do you own? (Emma Shapplin)
2, Carmine Meo & Etterna. She only had two studio albums out. I really wish Emma would record a new album some time soon, its been so long since the last one - 5/6 years now! Her music is very beautiful and poetic, and I like how she writes the lyrics in Baroque Italian!

    6. What is your favorite song by 17? (Sex Pistols)
ANARCHY!!! for the UK. Don't wanna be a giant cliche by saying this but I do like that song very much. I also love the lesser known song Problems. It perfectly conveys my feelings of frustration when I feel the rage.

    7. Is there a song by 7 that makes you sad? (The Beatles)
A Day In The Life. Definitely. There's a certain storytelling quality and melancholy depth to it that makes it perfect. But what the heck, it is the closing song off the best album (decleared by I don't know how many critics and fans already) ever.

    8. What is your favorite album by 15? (Guns N' Roses)
(Eh, I thought they were higher on the charts... oh well.) Without a doubt Appetite For Destruction. Catchy as hell.

    9. What is your favorite song by 5? (Led Zeppelin)
Fave songs questions are always so hard... so..
Stairway To Heaven would top my list of fave Led Zep songs. There's so much emotions in that song

    10. Is there a song by 6 that makes you happy? (Metallica)
Haha, I don't know about that. Most of their songs I listened to (I'm a strictly 80s Metallica only person) deals with issues and social commentaries. But listening to their cover of Queen's Stone Cold Crazy do make me feel happy :)

    11. What is your favorite album by 12? (Red Hot Chili Peppers)
I would rate different albums as my faves depending on the mood I'm in. They also change based on

    12. What is your favorite song by 10? (The Who)
(NOT another fave song question. Gawd, be more creative will ya??)
Talkin' bout MY GENERATION! Behind Blue Eyes..

    13. What is a good memory you have involving 20? (Miyavi)
    Memories??? What memories?
    Connotations? Oh, lol.
It was finding out tha Miyavi & I SHARE THE SAME BIRTHDATE! I mean, what are the chances that someone famous that you know AND likes (not some random person who you don't know) are born on the same day as you?

    14. What is your favorite song by 8? (AC/DC)
    Shake Your Leg. "Shake it!!"
Love so many songs by them that I'm not going to list them all here.

    15. Is there a song by 19 that makes you happy? (Dir en grey)
Dir en Grey = HAPPY music? Are you kidding me?

    16. How many times have you seen 25 live? (Hayley Westenra)
I'm a lame fan. I think I haven't saw her live particularly even though Hayley's from New Zealand. Gaaaa..... Last last week I had the chance to, but decided to cancel out in cos of weather. I'm a frail creature..

    17. What is the first song you ever heard by 23? (Caroline)
Funny, I'm just listening to her song right now (via shuffle). I think it was Where's Your Love. Lovely song.

    18. What is your favorite album by 11? (Nirvana)
I am very much tempted to say Nevermind or In Utero, but curiously, I have to say Unplugged. It's something of a magic to hear Nirvana at low a decibel. And more than just incredible. The world certainly lost some sparkle since Kurt Cobain decided to leave. RIP.

    19. Who is a favorite member of 1? (Queen)
Freddie Mercury, of course! But what the heck, I love them all, maybe bit more Freddie...

    20. Have you ever seen 24 live? (Alice Cooper)
Na, that's what I get for 1) not being born decades earlier; 2) living in New Zealand, which is just next door to Australia and is an English speaking country but not a lot of international artists come here too often..
But Alice IS coming to Wellington with Ozzy Osbourne, Kiss, Poison, Whitesnake, Lordi for Rock2Wellington concert on 22/23 March! And damn it, I know I'm gonna miss out cos I don't live in Wellington..

    21. What is a good memory involving 27? (X JAPAN)
GOSH, enough with the repetitive questions already..
I don't know how to answer this one, since I haven't been too avid a listener of J-Rock since I got hooked on Classic Rock (conflict of interests..) But I would wanna listen to more J-Rock/C-Rock/K-Rock/asian Rock from now on if anyone got some suggestions for good artists.

    22. What is your favorite song by 28? (Miyavi)
Huh? Why is Miyavi on my chart twice? Man, I really hope last.fm will have some sort of chart cleaning tool or tags moderations...
Anyway, I think that song is Rock And Roll Is Not Dead and/or Senor Senora Senorite. For those of you who don't know Miyavi, check him out! He's awesome. J-Rock rocks.

    23. What is the first song you ever heard by 9? (Motorhead)
    Ace of Spades!

    24. What is your favorite album by 18? (Ramones)
Ramones, the debut album that started it all.

    25. What is your favorite song by 21? (KT Tunstall)
Under The Weather, Silent Sea, Miniature Disasters, Beauty of Uncertainty, Throw Me A Rope. One thing these all share in common: they're mostly acoustic.

    26. What is the first song you ever heard by 26? (2002)
River of Stars. Try them out, New age is good for you.

    27. What is your favorite album by 3? (David Bowie)
Ziggy Stardust, but I love the other albums too.. so yeah.

    28. What is you favorite song by 4? (OLIVIA)
THESE FAVE SONG QUESTIONS ARE SO HARD!
Celestial Delinquent, Space Halo, Africa, Wish, Walk On By. These I <3, and many more I like. Her style is so versatile that it's a shame not a lot of people know her stuff. Oh well, unless you're a fan of Japanese music that is...

    29. What was the first song you ever heard by 2? (The Clash)
I first heard Rock The Casbah few years ago on the radio, but had no idea it was them. That's what you get if you live by modern top 40 charts for too long.

    30. What is you favorite song by 30? (The Police)
Every Breathe You Take. And likewise, I never really knew whose song it was when I heard it (when I was like 5/6 I think.)

Yay, finally finished writing this after like 1 hour and a half. As usual, the basic concept of this was ripped off someone else's journal. Kudos for my writer's block.
  • My cd collection...

    Fev 22 2006, 6h23 por infinitetime

Below is my cd collection. Some of these albums I listen to often, some get played a couple times a year, and a few albums only get played every couple of years. This list serves as a musical diary of sorts; a look at some of the cds I've been collecting since the age of thirteen. This list isn't fully comprehensive of all the bands/artists I like. Luckily we have Last.fm to show what we're currently listening to.
