foobar2000 (music player)
mp3tag (use to tag files before scrobbling)
I just wanted to take a few minutes to tell you about tagging and hope to be able to help with some tips I've learned.
First of all, I started using Last.fm when I used Winamp as my primary music client. I had a japanese interface, but the songs' tags would be in garbled ascii. Maybe there's a way to fix it, but I found out about "foobar2000" by asking around. foobar2000 is a music client with a very simple interface and doesn't use much of your computer's power. You may also customize the colors to your liking. In most cases, foobar will accept your japanese tags with an exception to mixing and matching certain symbols like ☆, ★, ∀, etc... This can be easily worked around anyway. All in all, it's my favourite client and Last.fm likes it as well.
On the lines of tagging, on a few occasions, I've gone through and manually tagged each song by right clicking, going to properties, and using Windows's tagging program (great memories). While effective, it took many hours and lots of motivation and will. After using Last.fm for a while I've come across different tagging journals and found that "mp3tag" works the best for tagging music. For instance, you can add your entire music folder, selecting thousands of files at once, changing the genre, the track format, and everything else included in the Windows tagging program with an undo button included in case you make a mistake.
Now, where to find a band's correct information. I use several sources but the ones I use most often, like a lot of people, include visunavi, grassthread, vkdb, and puresound. In most cases, you'll be able to find the correct song information for whatever you're looking for. If you're really picky, grassthread tends to be incorrect at times and it'd be wise to check visunavi to make sure it's listed correctly and/or visit the band's official website considering it's still active.
A band's website is the best place to find the correct information. At least if they listed their own information wrong, you're doing it wrong with them. Another good place to check if you can't find the correct song information at those sites is to check brand-x and closet child. Sometimes they'll have more rare products listed that often even include the original cover art.
Also, Last.fm itself is a good place to look for information on bands. Just search for the band in the "Music Search" box and you'll be able to see if the spelling you input is the real way to spell it and also you can check out the tracks scrobbled by that particular band. The more tracks scrobbled by more people the more likely that's the correct song title.
What do you do when a band changes their name? Let's take
lab. for example. At some point their name changed to
LAB. THE BASEMENT. The correct way to tag these songs would be to rename all the band's future releases with their new name and keep their old name for all previous works.
Hopefully I've helped some people along the lines of tagging and plan to add some more information and bands in due time.
Using a tagging-friendly client like foobar2000, here's a small list of example band names (the correct band names are on the right; also by no means an official list, rather a sample):

If you're in doubt whether a band's name should be in romaji or japanese, check their official page first. Also I didn't add the bands people have been inputting in romaji unicode now (i.e. HeaRt is
HeaRt, LuLu is
LuLu, etc...). Be sure to check the other journals for that information!

るう゛ぃえ changed their name to
Ruvie. As I mentioned, keep their original artist tags as るう゛ぃえ and change their artist tags to Ruvie for their new releases. (o^-')b
