  • Essential Albums of the Last Decade - Volume I

    Nov 28 2009, 22h49 por DreadfulYgg

I’m redoing my lists because I previously might have been catering too much to releases I personally loved, and not enough on the absolute musts of this first decade of the century. Therefore, my redux will now begin. Once again, here are the rules:
    1) There is no order to any of these lists, it’s all random.
    2) One album per band. A very fair way to do things if you ask me.
    3) 20 albums per volume. Five volumes altogether. 20 x 5 = 100. You see?

    Opeth- Blackwater Park

While there can be arguments made for any of Opeth's albums released in this decade, it's next to impossible to argue against any decisions. My choice is Blackwater Park because throughout each of its 8 songs, virtually no flaws are to be found. The songwriting is some of the best in the band's long career, the acoustic and heavy passages are masterfully segued into one another, and is responsible for some of Opeth's most beloved material to date.

    Nevermore- This Godless Endeavor

Nevermore were always a unique heavy metal band. They escape conventional genre tags and continue to forge their own path, led by god-like talents of Warrel Dane and Jeff Loomis. This Godless Endeavor, along with Dreaming Neon Black, stands as the watershed moment in their career and the quality of this album is probably one of the reasons the band has yet to release a follow-up. It wil be no easy task, since this release fires on all cylinders.

    Anaal Nathrakh- The Codex Necro

In the discussion of most unrelenting and brutal black metal to date, this is a no brainer. The power and heft that comes out of the riffs and light speed percussion, not to mention the venemous vocals lend themselves to create a black metal album that's as intimidating as one can find these days. One lyric sums up the sound perfectly: "Down on your knees!"

    Ensiferum- s/t

Ensiferum's debut album is energetic, folky, and fun as hell. Contrasted with the more black metalish folk sounds of Finntroll, Ensiferum bring a sound more akin to power and melodeath, and does it ever work well. Without a doubt, Ensiferum made a huge mark on the folk metal scene with their debut album alone and continue to do so today. They've yet to best this work althoug they've come close.

    Summoning- Oath Bound

Let's all face it, none of us can ever expect to create the kind of musical art Summoning have shown us in the last 10 years. Their last three albums form a triforce of black metal perfection, but Oath Bound doesn't so much surpass any quality shown on those previous two efforts. Instead, what it does is raise the bar for what can be done within the metal form. Summoning transcend their genre and channel the spirit of Tolkien better than anyone while they're at it, and it's powerful enough to inspire even the most stout-hearted listener. Might and glory awaits you...

    Windir- 1184

There are few, if any, that can match the talent and engaging melodies that Windir were able to form.. You have to wonder if Valfar knew he was writing a song about his inevitable death. It's both tragic and full of wonderment when you listen to this album and come to the last song on the album only to realize that it serves as the perfect monument to Valfar's genius. His mark upon the metal world will always be felt thanks to this masterpiece.

    Agalloch- The Mantle

There's a reason why this has made so many people's lists of "Favorites of all-time" within just seven years of its release. Agalloch are one of those bands that put out memorable album after memorable album, and The Mantle is no exception. You could really make the same argument for Ashes Against the Grain, but The Mantle is the one that put them on the map and finally revealed their greatness (after their classic debut) to many who were gladly willing to follow them. Another band that needs no classification, Agalloch sound like no one else.

    Darkspace- Dark Space III

Easily one of the most startling new bands of this first decade, Darkspace are an underground gem to those who will understand just what it is they are doing not just for black metal, but for music in general. Their use of minimalism is second to none, and no other band can create the atmosphere of being in space better than they can. Dark Space III stands as the culmination of everything they've done thus far and is a must listen to anyone.

    Immortal- Sons of Northern Darkness

Always one of the leader of the second wave of black metal in Norway, their revitalized and epic new sound came with the now classic At the Heart of Winter. While Damned in Black was a worthy album in its own right, it didn't capture that freezing and frostbitten aura the band always excelled at. Sons of Northern Darkness picks up the pieces of At the Heart of Winter and assembles them into a modern black metal classic. The production has never sounded so well and it brings out their music in the best possible way. Guitars slice, drums pound like ice, and Abbath's vocals call forth legions from the darkest and coldest regions on Earth to battle. Sons of Northern Darkness is without a doubt Immortal's crowning achievement.

    Negură Bunget- Om

If you ever wondered what progressive black metal was all about, look no further than these Transylvanian gods. Like Darkspace, this band is paving the way for the future of black metal but instead of channeling the vast darkness of space, Negură Bunget take a difference approach. Their influenced by philosophical and natural aspects of life, and their music reflects that with its sometimes otherwordly sounds. I struggle with words for Om because they simply won't do justice here. If you haven't experienced Om, then you're in for the experience of a lifetime.

    Nile- In Their Darkened Shrines

While some may argue Annihilation of the Wicked as being their best, I find it difficult to not see In Their Darkened Shrines as the masterpiece that it is. Not only do I find it more brutal sound-wise, but the Egyptian atmosphere that Nile has always been inspired to create is found here in a way not heard on other albums. Whether it's the pefectly implemented synths or technical riffage or all out assault of the drums, Nile proved once and for all that they were a juggernaut in the modern death metal scene and haven't looked back since.

    Arcturus- The Sham Mirrors

When it comes to the avant-garde approach to metal, perhaps there is none better than Arcturus, specifically this album where they excel at their craft in every song. Of course, it helps when all of your members are essentially "Norwegian royalty", including the lovely talents of Garm. Clever use of electronics, near perfect riffage, and flawless drumming from Hellhammer round out this package. Add to that an original approach to songwriting and you have a winner.

    Drudkh- Blood in Our Wells

As good of Autumn Aurora is, and I will never take anything away from it, Blood in Our Wells has impressed me from day one. This is the band at their finest, utilizing that unique sound only they can pull off. The atmosphere is rich with Ukranian folk melodies, and one can almost imagine accompanying the lonesome figures dragging along the terrain on the album cover. In short, Drudkh sound like no other band in black metal. This album is a journey everyone needs to take.

    Isis- Oceanic

Once again, I was stuck between two albums, Panopticon probably being just as good, but I will give Oceanic the nod. The epic scope of this album is immense, and Isis are just as effective crushing your skull with bone crunching riffs as they are soothing your soul into liquid metal with their ambient and quieter moments. Isis are their own niche genre and follow no one.

    Devin Townsend- Terria

A mad genius in the metal world, Devin Townsend's solo work has been a continuing expression for his more progressive and melodic tendencies. Terria is no different, and it serves to enhance Devin's already legendary reputation. Equal parts serious and tongue-in-cheek, this is one album that any metal fan will feel proud to hold in their collection.

    Boris- Pink

With so many quality albums, you can't go wrong with anything Boris has done. What is so great about Pink, however, is the unbridled energy and focus the band plays with on every song. Not only is this a perfect introduction to Boris, it' will likely remain a favorite long after you've acquired more of their discography.

    Xasthur- Nocturnal Poisoning

The band one loves to hate, and adores, Malefic created his magnum opus on his debut album. A rough production style accentuates and creates an atmosphere that would not be possible otherwise. Of course, the songwriting here is well done too, and this album is a template for how depressive black metal ought to be done.

Akercocke- Words That Go Unspoken, Deeds That Go Undone

These fancy dressed Brits are a prime example for the type of elusive and avant-garde like direction metal ought to be taking in the 21st century. Walking the line between prog, black metal and death metal, this fourth album is the apex for all the work they've produced thus far. Menacing yet intellectual.

    Amon Amarth- Versus the World

While many have called With Oden on Our Side their best, and with good reason, Versus the World has something special that I can't quite put my finger on. The sound has a little bit more grit and grime than their other works, but still the ferocity the band has always been known for. Also, each song is finely crafted into a complete package, showcasing the band's talent for forging a melodic death metal sound that is all their own.

Ásmegin- Hin Vordende Sod & Sø

Heralding from Norway, Ásmegin are a band that took the metal underground by storm. Here we have a band that is not afraid to mix a plethora of metal styles in the melting pot, and glaze it with a folky and delightfully refreshing coating, all of which is able to stand its own ground, escaping the cliche trappings of many other folk metal bands. To top it off, not only is this a debut, it's also one of the best folk metal releases ever.

    To be continued...

Well i made a journal back in 2006 to see how my music taste compared to the mainstream listeners, in that you had to mark down how many listeners each artist had at the time, now looking back on it i find its very interesting to see how they've grown over the years.
so i thought i'd record what each artist has currently so that again i can look back in a year or so and see how they've grown again.
im planning to mark down my top 50, but might take longer then i can be bothered tonight.

Šodien piekāpu foršajā statu mīļu grupā un meklējot to rīku, kurš rēķina no kurām valstīm ir grupas, ko klausos, atradu vienu citu rīku, kurš ieteica nevis izpildītājus, bet konkrētas dziesmas. Iedeva tādu garu sarakstu. Nu ko - būs jāievērtē.

  • Metal bands that have released an album/EP in 2009

    Dez 31 2008, 18h13 por gunleik

I WILL DO ONE LAST UPDATE AT THE END OF THE YEAR

    READ THIS:
Firstly, some of this info IS wrong. Since it's so many bands, and the dates may change etc., I can't keep track of them all.
    TBA means to be announced.
Some of the albums on WILL RELEASE may be working titles, which means that the band may change it. That counts for the release dates too.

    Example:
    Genre (Additional genre)
    - Band - Album (EP/split/itunes/demo) (release date)
(town, country: if there're several bands with same name / former band name: if they've changed it)

  • Best of 2008

    Best of 2008

This year it was rather difficult coming up with a decent list of 2008 albums, mainly because I have been listening to a lot of older stuff and missing out on 2008 stuff as a consequence. It took me quite some time to search and remember albums from 2008 that I really enjoyed as nothing seemed to really stand out at first. I do think that I came up with what would most likely be my list of favourites for this year. There might be things I have forgotten, but I doubt I will update this list after it is officially posted.

Again the same thing happened as I described in last year's "Best of 2007" entry: there is too much music out there that I think I might enjoy and there is too much that I do indeed enjoy listening it. At the same time, there is far too little time to listen to everything that sounds interesting and sometimes you make the wrong choices on what to focus on (goes for life in general as well...). All of this simply means that at some point in the coming year(s) I will listen to some album released in 2008 and wonder why I never picked that up earlier. To err is human...

    The Good:
A Forest of Stars - The Corpse Of Rebirth
Not only at the top of the list because it is in alphabetical order, but probably also because this is one of my favourite releases for 2008. Black metal, violins, avant-garde tendencies, strange vocals, gorgeous packaging... this has got it all. If you want to get something more out of your black metal albums, "The Corpse of Rebirth" is definitely worth trying.

    Anathema - Hindsight
I have to come clean in writing something about this album, a confession of sorts. Regardless of how shameful it is, I have to admit that I had never really cared about or even really listened to this band before this year. Of course, I had heard a lot about them and I might have heard some random songs of theirs over the years, but that was it. Well, I am glad that I am able to add to that confession that I am glad to have discovered this band and that they have some quality releases (especially "Alternative 4"...). "Hindsight" is a thing of beauty in its own right and despite not being too familiar with most of the reworked songs, that has not kept me from thoroughly enjoying this album.

Black Lotus - Harvest of Seasons
This gem I discovered in the nick of time! Maybe two weeks later and they would not have been on this list at all or they would have been a great reason for editing the list! Lovely black metal with a clear folkish sentiment. Love for nature abound on this album. I cannot help but be reminded of Borknagar at times, especially because of the use of clean vocals, and I do not think that it could be anything but a compliment to be likened to that band.

    Doom:vs - Dead Words Speak
While I am still slightly more impressed with the debut "Aeternum Vale", I have to admit that Johan Ericsson has a knack for creating and maintaining atmospheres throughout songs and albums. The music is dark and slow, but unlike a lot of other funeral doom stuff does not get boring or tedious. 'Dead Words Speak' has to be my favourite song hear, especially because of the "chorus".

    Enslaved - Vertebrae
Enslaved keep doing it. They release great records and as far as I can tell, they will keep releasing great records until they break up. "Vertebrae" is a great record and, in my opinion, better than "Isa" or "Ruun". I cannot really compare this band with their viking stuff anymore and I guess I can understand why some people would argue that they should have changed their name, but Enslaved's music has shown a clear progression through the years. They are different, but none the worse because of it.

    Forefather - Steadfast
Forefather have been pretty prolific in their 10 years of releasing albums, but none of them have ever really stuck to me like "Steadfast" has. "Engla Tocyme" and "Ours Is the Kingdom" are decent albums, but "Steadfast" is a firm step beyond the level reached on those two. The music is more complex than before and I still love the way Forefather use clean vocals in their music. It seems like taking a little extra time for producing this record has really paid off.

    Mgła - Groza
This album took me by surprise, really. I had heard Mgła on the "Crushing the Holy Trinity" six-way split with Deathspell Omega, Clandestine Blaze and others, but that did not really impress me much. Fast-forward to 2008 and Mgła's first full-length effort. "Groza" ("dread" in Polish... fitting title) is an evil album and what mostly shows that is the quality of the production. Sure, it is not clean or polished, but it fits the music perfectly. Also, great natural-sounding drums. Good job!

    Opeth - Watershed
Yep, they made the list. Watershed, what can I say? It took me a fair while to get into the album, but it is admittedly a much better album than "Ghost Reveries" was. I love how Per's keyboard playing is integrated much better within the rest of the music instead of being simply an afterthought. A lot has changed since Orchid, but change need not necessarily be a bad thing in all cases.

    Serpentcult - Weight of Light
Traditional doom metal is something that I have always appreciated more than the whole grunty kind of doom metal. Female vocals I have never really liked all that much. It is quite surprising, then, to realise that female vocals work pretty well in traditional doom metal... at least in Serpentcult's case. Nice crunchy music and female vocals. It works.

    Taake - Taake
I love Taake... they are probably my favourite black metal band out there and I am not afraid to admit it. Especially not when every single (full-length) release of theirs is great. I am not too fond of some of the EP stuff they have done, but the fact remains that Taake keep giving us some really nice music. There is just something about their material to which no other black metal band seems to be able to get even close.

    The Bad:
    Ásmegin - Arv
Waiting 5 years for new material by this band and what I heard was very disappointing. Have been reading up on the recording process and the circumstances under which this album was recorded and released and though I can feel for those guys, this is still not a very good album in my opinion. I miss the aggression and the song writing they showed on "Hin Vordende Sod & Sø". Here's to hoping "Tusind Tabte Siæles Kakofoni" will eventually see the light of day.

    Dark Age - Minus Exitus
I did not really want to add this album to this section at first, because I usually only put in albums that I looked forward to, but found disappointing or simply horrible upon listening. Anyway, I was sent this album and asked to write a review and damn what a chore it was to listen to this album more than once and write a decent review of it. Horribly insipid music and it still seems to get quite decent ratings all around. Maybe there is something wrong with me. Read my full review here.

    Death Angel - Killing Season
Okay, I was not expecting much of this and I guess I got exactly that. Nothing interesting and nothing I would want to listen to again. Lacks speed, lacks focus, lacks basically anything that could possibly make this a good album.

Iced Earth - The Crucible Of Man
I have to admit that I was one of the people that were really, truly hoping that Matt Barlow's return would suddenly "fix" Iced Earth again and restore peace and balance to the universe. Alas, "we" were deceived. Although it is nice to hear Barlow with Iced Earth again, it does not make the music any better and I guess if I had been slightly more clear-headed about it, I could have expected that.

    Týr - Land
Although "Ragnarok" was a great album, I have to admit that I was pretty disappointed with "Land". The songs are over-long and do not really go anywhere, leaving the album as a whole feeling tedious and uninteresting. For a more detailed review I wrote, see here (never mind the numerical rating, it should have been lower than that).

    The Honourable Mentions:
    Agalloch - The White
For being a fun little EP.

    ColdWorld - Melancholie²
For being a nice piece of depressive music.

    Enforcer - Into The Night
    For kicking butt.

    Fen - The Malediction Fields
For seeming like an awesome album, but not making it into the list because I simply have not had the time to listen to it enough.

    Lifelover - Konkurs
For not making it into the list this year... perhaps because it is a bit too long.

    C'est tout. Comments, people, comments!
